Graphical Colloidal superparticles (SPs) are nanoparticle (NP) assemblies in the form of colloidal particles. Assembling nanoscopic objects into mesoscopic or macroscopic composite architectures allows for the bottom-up fabrication of functional nanomaterials. In this study, a method for single-step self-assembly synthesis of Au/NaYF 4 : Yb,Er SPs was developed using oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions to simultaneously encapsulate gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and NaYF 4 : Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) via evaporation at room temperature. The synthesized Au/NaYF 4 : Yb,Er SPs possess good dispersibility and stability. When the number of AuNPs added is increased, the SPs exhibit decreased upconversion luminescence, which can be ascribed to the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the NaYF 4 : Yb,Er UCNPs to the AuNPs. Time-resolved measurements of the green emission further confirm the existence of a new decay route corresponding to the FRET process. Our research provides a facile and versatile strategy for the synthesis of novel multifunctional nanocomposites with tunable upconversion luminescence properties, which can be of great significance in biological applications.

Unique lotus-rootlike Au-ZnO hybrid structures were obtained by controlling the deposition of pre-synthesized Au nanocrystals onto the surfaces of as-obtained ZnO structures. ZnO with lotus-rootlike structures was first prepared through a hydrothermal process. We also investigated the effects of various Au contents on the photocatalytic activities in detail. Notably, compared to the pure ZnO component, these resulting lotus-root-like Au-ZnO nanostructures with the appropriate amounts of Au content exhibited better photocatalytic efficiency.

One-dimension noble nanomaterials have promising applications in many fields, and their growth pattern control is significant to property modulation. Herein, we report a facile strategy with which the growth pattern of Ag on the Au nanorod (NR) or decahedral nanoparticle (NP) surface can be precisely controlled and various structured Ag/Au NRs can be synthesized. Achievement of growth pattern control is mainly attributed to the adjustable reaction kinetics of Ag– to Ag0. Slow and moderate reaction rate favor asymmetrical growth, producing Au-tipped Ag NRs and asymmetrical Ag–Au–Ag NRs, respectively. In the case of a fast reaction rate, symmetrical growth dominates and symmetrical Ag–Au–Ag NRs form. Furthermore, the prepared bimetallic NRs can be used as starting materials to generate other novel nanostructures (nanocups, nanonails, and longer Au-tipped Ag NRs). The result presented here is vital to both exploration of growth theory and constructing nanostructures of not only the Au/Ag bimetallic system but also possibly other noble bimetallic systems. Moreover, these prepared nanostructures could provide model materials for studying the physical properties (such as structure-dependent surface plasmon) or have potential applications in the medical field. For example, hollow nanocups can serve as containers for controlled release of drug, etc.

Au nanoparticles/mesoporous CuO nanosheets were successfully synthesized by the assembly of negatively charged AuCl4−1 and positively charged CuO nanosheets using sodium citrate and thermal reduction, respectively. The structure and morphology were characterized in detail. Both the loading amount of Au nanoparticles and the performance were controlled by the reduction process. The resulting Au/CuO NSs exhibited good catalytic activity for CO oxidation and good non-enzymatic sensitivity for glucose.

Gold-coated magnetic core@shell nanoparticles , which exhibit magneto-optical properties, not only enhance the chemical stability of core and biocompatibility of surface, but also provide a combination of multimodal imaging and therapeutics. The conjugation of these tiny nanoparticles with specific biomolecules allows researchers to target the desired location. In this paper, superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles were synthesized and functionalized with the azide group on the surface by formation of self-assembled monolayers. Folate (FA) molecules, non-immunogenic target ligands for cancer cells, are conjugated with alkyne and then immobilized on the azide-terminated Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles through copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (click reaction). Myelogenous leukemia K562 cells were used as a folate receptor (FR) model, which can be targeted and extracted by magnetic field after interaction with the Fe 3 O 4 @Au–FA nanoparticles.

Dopamine (DA) is a neurotransmitter which plays a key role in the life science. Self-assembled [email protected] nanorod dimers based on aptamers were developed for ultrasensitive dopamine detection. The electronic field was significantly enhanced by the addition of silver shell coating on the surface of Au NR dimer. The results displayed that [email protected] NR dimers were ideal building blocks for constructing the SERS substrates with prominent Raman enhancement effects. It was found that with using this Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-encoded this sensing system, a limit of detection of 0.006 pM and a wide linear range of 0.01–10 pM for dopamine detection were obtained. Our work open up a new avenue for the diagnosis and drug-discovery programs.

This study introduces Au nanoparticles into ZnIn2S4 through electrodeposition to overcome the limitation of rapid charge carrier recombination on the photoelectrochemical efficiency. The strong coupling of Au nanoparticles with the FTO substrate not only serves as an electron acceptor but also exhibits a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, significantly enhancing charge carrier separation efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of Au nanoparticles notably improves the light absorption capability of ZnIn2S4, enhancing its solar energy conversion efficiency and rendering it an effective photoelectrocatalytic catalyst. Electrochemical analysis shows that the modified sample achieves a photocurrent density of 0.52 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V (vs RHE), which is 2.15 times that of pure ZnIn2S4, validating the potential of this approach for photoelectrocatalytic applications.

Thanks to the high affinity, adsorbents with sulfur-containing groups are usually used to recover Au ions, but neglect of the availability and utilization of introduced groups often makes the effort wasted, limiting the practical application of adsorbents severely. Here, we designed and fabricated two ANF-based aerogels with free and anchored thiourea groups respectively, and the adsorption performance and key influence factors were investigated by combining experiments and MD simulations. The experimental results showed that two aerogels exhibited distinct performance of adsorbing Au ions. And MD simulations results disclosed the structure difference of thiourea groups on the surface of two aerogels. The one with better performance had freer sulfur-containing groups, and these groups were easy to change their conformation, resulting in easier interaction with Au ions. However, groups on the surface of the other one were anchored. This difference in structure and resultant performance indicated that the freedom of functional groups play a critical role in the process of adsorption. As a result, the calculated maximum adsorption capacity of aerogels with free thiourea groups is as high as 719.42 mg/g, and although the reusability of adsorbents decreases with the increase of recycle times, caused by the generation of Au (0) during adsorption process, its adsorption capacity is till as high as 461.9 mg/g. Alternatively, incineration is also a feasible approach, especially after several recycle times, because of the low cost of fabricated adsorbents. Therefore, aerogels prepared by structural design have advantages in the field of gold recovery, and the superior performance also demonstrates the significance of utilization of introduced functional groups in the designed adsorbents.

Metal oxide semiconductors have been proven to be a very effective photocatalytic material. In this study, Au-WO 3 was successfully synthesized through a microwave irradiation-assisted one-pot method. The results demonstrated that the hydration degree of WO 3 · n H 2 O could be controlled by Au, and the nanorods could be refined. When the optimum Au modification level was 5.4 wt.%, the specific surface area of WO 3 · n H 2 O increased from 36.67 m 2 g −1 to 71.72 m 2 g −1 , indicating that active sites on the catalyst surface were added. The photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) is considered to assess the photocatalytic performance of the Au-WO 3 nanoparticles under visible light. The deterioration of the sample increased initially, then decreased as the Au level increased. The photocatalytic degradation capacity was strongest when the Au content was 5.4 wt.%, and the degradation rate was 0.0084 min −1 .

Purpose This study aimed to enhance the efficacy of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) for breast cancer by engineering TiO2 nanosheets modified with Au nanoclusters (TiO2-Au), thereby improving reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under ultrasound (US) irradiation. Methods TiO2-Au sonosensitizers were synthesized via a deposition–precipitation with urea (DPU) method and characterized by TEM, XRD, and XPS. ROS generation efficiency was quantified using DPBF, TMB, and NBT probes, along with electron spin resonance (ESR). In vitro therapeutic performance was assessed in 4T1 breast cancer cells via flow cytometry, Calcein-AM/PI staining, and cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. In vivo efficacy and biosafety were validated in 4T1 tumor-bearing BALB/c mice through tumor growth monitoring, histological analysis, blood biochemistry, and hemolysis assays. Results TiO2-Au10.5 exhibited enhanced electron–hole separation, reduced bandgap (from 3.2 to 2.8 eV), and significantly boosted ROS generation under US irradiation. In vitro, TiO2-Au10.5 combined with US induced a 4.25-fold increase in intracellular ROS and a 4.7-fold higher apoptosis rate compared to TiO2 + US. In vivo, TiO2-Au10.5 + US achieved a tumor growth inhibition index of 76.9% without significant toxicity, as evidenced by normal blood markers, no hemolysis, and no damage to major organs. Conclusion Au nanocluster modification effectively tunes the sonodynamic performance of TiO2 nanosheets by modulating electron–hole separation and ROS production. Notably, varying the Au content enabled precise regulation of SDT efficacy, with TiO2-Au10.5 achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes. These findings highlight TiO2-Au as a safe, potent, and composition-tunable sonosensitizer platform for precise and effective cancer therapy.

The photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and electrochemiluminescence from nanocrystals (NCs) have been extensively exploited for both fundamental and applied investigation over two decades, while the understanding of chemiluminescence (CL) from NCs is still far from clear by now. Herein, a general route for triggering CL from NC luminophore is proposed by extensively exploiting the charge transfer between n-type NCs and oxidants. Oxidants, such as K2S2O8, H2O2, KMnO4, and NaClO, can chemically inject the hole onto the valence band (VB) of methionine-capped n-type AuNCs (Met@AuNCs) and enable the occurrence of efficient radiative-charge-recombination between the chemically injected exogenous VB hole and the pre-existed endogenous conduction band (CB) electron, which eventually results in single-color and defect-involved CL with the maximum emission wavelength around 824 nm. The CL of Met@AuNCs/oxidant is qualified for ultrasensitive CL immunoassay in a similar procedure to the biotin–avidin and magnetic separation involved commercial CL immunoassay and exhibits acceptable performance for linearly determining carcinoembryonic antigen from 50 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL with a limit of detection of 10 pg/mL (S/N = 3). This strategy provides a general route to develop nanoparticulate CL luminophores and might eventually enable CL multiplexing assay via extensively exploiting the CL of different wavebands.

An Au film–PIL nanohole–SiO 2 nanosphere–Au nanosphere SERS substrate integrated with machine learning was fabricated. • Dual electromagnetic enhancement was realized by waveguide modes of hybrid structure and LSPR of Au nanospheres. • PIL nanoholes around Au nanospheres promoted PAHs adsorption through hydrophobic effect and π-π stacking interaction. • The PCA-SVM model achieved over 95% prediction accuracy for PAHs of various concentrations and species in river water. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising trace detection technique, yet its practical application in environmental pollutant analysis remains severely restricted by insufficient electromagnetic enhancement and weak adsorption capacity toward target analytes. Herein, a novel hybrid SERS substrate with dual electromagnetic enhancement and highly efficient molecular enrichment was facilely fabricated, featuring a hierarchical structure of Au film–poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) nanohole–SiO 2 nanosphere–Au nanosphere. In this system, the waveguide optical modes of the Au film–PIL nanohole–SiO 2 nanosphere structure induce the primary electromagnetic enhancement, while Au nanospheres are precisely positioned in the primary enhancement regions to deliver a secondary electromagnetic enhancement through localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), thereby realizing a high enhancement factor of 2.35 × 10 7 for pyrene. Meanwhile, PIL nanoholes facilitate specific adsorption and enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) within hotspots via the hydrophobic effect and π-π stacking interactions, significantly amplifying the SERS response of analytes. The hybrid substrate exhibits excellent analytical performance, with limits of detection (LODs) as low as 5.33 × 10 −10 mol/L for pyrene and 3.97 × 10 −10 mol/L for anthracene, respectively. Furthermore, a combined principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was employed to efficiently extract spectral features and reduce data dimensionality, achieving a prediction accuracy exceeding 94% for varying concentrations and species of PAHs in actual river water samples. Taken together, the combination of this hybrid SERS substrate and the PCA-SVM algorithm provides a novel sensing platform, enabling ultrasensitive, accurate, and intelligent trace-level detection of environmental pollutants in complex matrices.
