There is a lack of systematic analysis and research on the special components of red beet and sugar beet, which are common beet varieties rich in a variety of beneficial chemicals. To investigate the differences in the composition of flavonoids and terpenoids in roots of red beet and sugar beet, poinsettia(red beet) and HD802(sugar beet) were detected and analysed in the present study by using the UPLC-MS/MS detection platform and the MWDB(Metware database), and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) was used to screen out the differential metabolites from the detected flavonoid metabolites and terpenoids metabolites. A total of 69 flavonoid metabolites from 6 classes and 48 terpenoids from 6 classes were detected in two kinds of beet roots. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the content of 5 flavonoid and 4 terpenoid differential metabolites was higher in red beet roots than in sugar beet roots, and the content of the remaining 25 flavonoid and 2 terpenoid differential metabolites was lower than that of sugar beet roots. According to the metabolite Log 2 FC, the components of the flavonoid metabolites with large difference ratio were mainly Polymethyl flavonoid derivatives, Iso-rhamnoside and Rhamnoside, Marigold glycoside, Methoxyl flavonoid derivatives, Diosmetin derivatives, Chrysoeriol and its derivatives, Luteolin derivatives, Homonetsin derivatives and Kaempferol derivatives. Significant differences in flavonoid metabolites and terpenoid metabolites between the two beet roots were found by non-targeted analysis of variance and can be further analysed as characteristic metabolites.

Background With the rapid growth of the demand for optically pure compounds in the fields of biology, medicine and stereospecific synthesis, it is of great importance to develop efficient, economical, simple enantioseparation and analysis methods. Open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) has attracted much attention in the field of chiral separation , but its column capacity and the sensitivity of common-used optical detection are relatively low. Zeolite beta nanomaterial is both enantioselective and size-selective, providing suitable chiral microenvironment for chiral recognition, and amperometric detection (AD) avoids the low sensitivity caused by the short optical path in optical detection to some extent. Results Zeolite beta nanomaterials with different particle sizes (25, 50 and 200 nm) were synthesized, and the morphology and structure were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Then, a novel chiral OT column was prepared by one-step method using zeolite beta nanomaterial as chiral stationary phase, and its separation performance was characterized by miniaturized CEC with AD (mini-CEC-AD) device. Under the optimum conditions, six groups of chiral drugs achieved baseline separation. Norepinephrine enantiomers were used for evaluating the inter-day, intra-day and inter-column reproducibility of the prepared open-tubular column. The relative standard deviations of migration time, peak area, resolution and selectivity factor were within 8.7 %. The limits of detection for norepinephrine enantiomers were 0.18 μg mL −1 (S/N = 3), and the average recoveries were in range of 96.7–105.0 %. This developed method has been successfully applied to the analysis of impurity enantiomer in potassium dichromate (+)-norepinephrine injection sample. Significance Zeolite beta nanomaterial was used as the stationary phase to prepare chiral OT columns for the first time, and this one-step preparation method is simple and easy. The introduction of zeolite beta enriches the types of chiral stationary phase materials in electrochromatographic columns, and mini-OT-CEC-AD system provides an alternative for fast enantioseparation of chiral compounds.

With the increasing prevalence of insomnia-related diseases, the effective treatment of insomnia has become an important health research topic. Lavender (Lavandula angustifoliaMill.) essential oil (LEO) is a commonly used medicine for the treatment of insomnia and neurological disorders. However, neither the active components nor its sedative–hypnotic mechanism have been fully discovered. This study aimed to screen the main active terpenes and discover the possible mechanism of LEO through network pharmacology in the treatment of insomnia-related diseases, as well as to verify our hypothesis in insomnia mice. The results showed that, in LEO’s 15 potential active ingredients, beta-myrcene had strong sedative–hypnotic effects through the serotonergic synaptic pathway according to the network pharmacological prediction. Further, PCPA(DL-4-chlorophenylalanine)-induced insomnia mice were treated with beta-myrcene for one day or seven days. The quiet state of insomnia mice was increased effectively, and the hypnotic effect was enhanced by anaobarbital sodium by prolonging sleep duration, decreasing sleep latency, and increasing the rate of falling asleep. Beta-myrcene reduced the damage to hypothalamic neuron cells induced by PCPA and increased neurotransmitter levels of GABA, 5-HT, and Glu in the serum and hypothalamus of insomnia mice. Meanwhile, beta-myrcene exerted an improvement in insomnia by upregulating relevant genes and protein expression in the serotonergic synaptic pathway. These results support the merit of the sedative–hypnotic activity of LEO. Beta-myrcene, a terpene in LEO, may be the main source of its sedative–hypnotic properties. It may serve as a good potential compound in future clinical studies on coping with insomnia.

Beta-lactam antibiotics (BLAs) are not only important in animal husbandry but are also unavoidable contaminants in milk. The gradual accumulation of BLAs in the human body due to increased milk intake can cause direct harm to human health. Therefore, developing selective and sensitive methods for rapid BLA detection is essential. In this study, a specific electrochemical receptor sensor based on penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) was established. PBP1a and PBP2x, which have high affinity and specificity for the six BLAs, were used as the receptors and their performance was compared. The sensor was fabricated by sequentially immobilizing a graphene/chitosan nanocomposite, penicillin G (PENG), and Nafion on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode using a convenient casting approach. The mechanism of the electrochemical receptor sensor involved direct competitive inhibition of the binding of the graphene/chitosan/PENG composite to the PBPs by the free BLAs in the solution. The PENG-PBPs complex resisted the interaction between [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3−/4− ions and the glassy carbon electrode, thereby decreasing the current signal of the BLAs. The BLA concentration was quantified using differential pulse voltammetry mode. The graphene/PENG/chitosan/Nafion-based electrochemical assay demonstrated good selectivity against other antibiotic residues frequently detected in milk. Under optimized conditions, the detection limits of this method ranged from 0.24 to 1.39 ng·mL −1 , which are much lower than the maximum residue limits set by China and the EU. Moreover, the sensor showed a satisfactory recovery rate of 98.8 ± 5.8%–103.2 ± 7.1%. The total analysis time involved only one incubation step, and the entire analysis could be completed within 35 min.

A β-cypermethrin
(CY) nanoformulation (CY@β-CDs/SE)
was constructed via a dual-carrier coencapsulation strategy utilizing
β-cyclodextrin octadecanoate (β-CDs) and starch hexadecanoate
ester (SE). This system leverages the host–guest inclusion
of pesticide molecules within the hydrophobic cavity of β-CDs,
followed by assembly with SE into an outer barrier via hydrophobic
interactions between β-CD and SE side chains, supplemented by
van der Waals forces and interfacial hydrogen bonding. The formulation
significantly enhanced the stability of the active ingredient, exhibiting
a thermal storage degradation of 3.47%, which was 20.4% and 59.0%
lower than those of the single-carrier CY@β-CDs and CY microemulsion
(CYm), respectively. The photolysis half-life ( T 50 ) of CY@β-CDs/SE reached 76.2 h, representing a 75%
and 127% extension compared to CY@β-CDs and CYm, respectively.
Sustained-release studies demonstrated a cumulative release of 79.0%
after 302 h in 20% methanol–water, and release increased markedly
under alkaline (pH = 9) or elevated temperatures (45 ° C), with
dual pH/temperature-responsive behavior. CY@β-CDs/SE maintained
68% insecticidal lethality 25 days postapplication, outperforming
CY@β-CDs (48.0%) and CYm (34.7%). Furthermore, CY@β-CDs/SE
substantially improved the biosafety of β-cypermethrin, achieving
a 96h LC 50 value of 24.7 μg/L in zebrafish , 2.1-fold higher than that of CYm (11.7 μg/L), while also
enhancing the biosafety for rice seed germination. This study establishes
an intelligent delivery system using biodegradable materials, offering
a strategy for pesticide reduction and advancing sustainable agricultural
practices.

Hierarchical Zr-Beta zeolite is realized by the alkali treatment. • Alkali treatment facilitates the conversion of closed Zr sites to open Zr sites. • The open Zr sites are characteristic of Lewis acidity. • Hierarchical Zr-Beta zeolite possess high activity and selectivity in furfural hydrogenation. The catalytic hydrogenation of furfural (FF) into furfuryl alcohol (FAL) is one of the key reactions in the valorization of biomass-derived platform compounds into value-added chemicals and fuels. The present study demonstrates that hierarchically modifying Zr-Beta zeolite (h-Zr-Beta zeolite) via alkali treatment can promote the activity and selectivity in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of FF to FAL, with the FAL formation rate of 8.8 mmol FAL g −1 h −1 . Comprehensive experimental and characterization studies reveal that alkali treatment, not only increases mesoporous within Zr-Beta zeolite, promoting the accessibility of internal active sites within the zeolite, but also increases the proportion of open Zr sites (11.6–54.5%). The consequently enhanced Lewis acidity (4.2 mmol g −1 to 8.8 mmol g −1 ) promotes the selective hydrogenation of FF to FAL. This work provides an efficient strategy for the fabrication of open sites within heteroatom zeolites, which could be of great help for the design of Lewis acid zeolite for Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reactions in biomass catalysis. Background For the previous rapid screening methods, antibody, molecularly imprinted polymer, aptamer and receptor are the usually used recognition reagents. It is well known that there are many antibiotic receptors on bacterial surface, so in theory the whole bacterium can be used as recognition reagent for screening of the specific antibiotic. However, such a method has not been reported so far. The aim of the present study is to develop a method for rapid screening of beta-lactam drugs in milk with Escherichia coli as the recognition reagent and with aggregation induced emission luminogen as the signal source. Results In this study, T4 phage was coupled with Fe 3 O 4 to synthesize a type of magnetic complex that could specifically capture E . coli . Cephalexin was coupled with an aggregation induced emission luminogen (tetraphenylethylene) to synthesize a fluorescent tracer that could specifically bind with the penicillin binding proteins on E . coli surface. The magnetic complex, the E . coli solution and the tracer were mixed with beta-lactam drugs to perform competition. The fluorescent signal from the tracer molecules aggregated on bacterial surface was negatively correlated with the drug concentration. This method could be used for multi-screening of 28 beta-lactam drugs. The operation was simple and rapid, and the sensitivities for these drugs (limits of detection of 0.73-95.19 pg/mL) were improved for 16-959 folds in comparison with fluorescein based fluorescent tracer. The detection results for the real milk samples were consistent with a LC-MS/MS method. Significance This is the first study reporting the use of phage/bacterium system and aggregation induced emission luminogen for detection of antibiotic residues in food sample. Under the guidance of this study, more similar or advanced methods based on bacteria and novel signal sources for detection of antibiotics should be reported in the future.

Monitoring of the amyloid-beta (A β ) peptide is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Here, a label-free, signal-on ratiometric electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor was fabricated for the detection of A β peptide. Specifically, graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets and luminol served as the cathodic and anodic ECL emitters, respectively. K 2 S 2 O 8 and H 2 O 2 were used as the coreactants for the two emitters. Luminol was first coated on the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode and used as the internal standard in the ratiometric biosensor. Polyaniline was then electrodeposited on the surface of the luminol-modified electrode to improve the biocompatibility and conductivity of the sensing interfaces. Gold nanoparticles were subsequently modified on the surface of polyaniline to immobilize a DNA aptamer. g-C 3 N 4 -heme incubated with different concentrations of A β solution to form g-C 3 N 4 -heme-A β complex, in which A β could specifically bind to the DNA aptamer and thus introduce g-C 3 N 4 into the system. As a result, it was observed that the ratio value of ECL intensity ( I 1 / I 2 ) significantly increased with the increase of A β concentration. Under the optimized conditions, the biosensor has a good linear response in the range 10 fM to 10 nM with a detection limit of 4.2 fM. Consequently, the ratiometric ECL sensor, characterized by high sensitivity and favorable stability, offers a reliable method for the determination of A β . Graphical

In this work, beta zeolite supported Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction was prepared for photodegradation of tetracycline under visible-light irradiation, and zeolite served as a support for the high dispersions of the Ti 3+ -TiO 2 nanoparticles . The obtained zeolite/Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction showed a relatively high surface areas of approximately 63.2 m 2 g −1 , much higher than those of the prepared Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /CdS (27.1 m 2 g −1 ), Ti 3+ -TiO 2 (36.5 m 2 g −1 ), and CdS (31.1 m 2 g −1 ), strongly demonstrating the significant of zeolite for high dispersion of the Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /CdS composite. Besides, the experimental results also showed that the photocatalytic degradation efficiency could reach 78 % in 3 min for the zeolite/Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction, and the corresponding rate constant was as high as 0.788 min −1 , which was 26.90 times that of pristine Ti 3+ -TiO 2 , 2.24 times of pristine CdS , and 2.04 times of the Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /CdS composite, mainly because of the supporting effects of zeolite and the formation of Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /CdS heterostructure for highly enhanced charge separation. In addition, the trapping experiment revealed that the main reactive species involved in tetracycline degradation were attributed to the photo-generated holes and ⸱O 2 - species.

A novel chiral thin-film composite polyamide (CTFC) membrane was fabricated by using in situ interfacial polymerization. The diethylamino-beta-cyclodextrin (EDA-β-CD) monomer was synthesized as the chiral selector and interfacially polymerized with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to fabricate the CTFC membrane on the surface of a commercial cellulose acetate (CA) membrane. The intrinsic properties of the chiral EDA-β-CD-TMC/CA membrane were investigated by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Several parameters, namely, EDA-β-CD concentration, interfacial polymerization (IP) time, and curing time were varied. At the optimal conditions, the water permeate flux was 35.7 L m −2 h −1 and the rejection of BSA was 80.7%. For the enantioseparation, various chiral drugs such as warfarin, ibuprofen , nefopam , ketoprofen and tryptophan were separated using chiral EDA-β-CD-TMC/CA membranes. The results indicate that the percent enantiomeric excess (e.e%) was above 9.29 ± 3.21% for warfarin, 3.77 ± 0.23% for ibuprofen and 27.2% for tryptophan. Additionally, the as-prepared membrane was relatively stable in a wide pH range, so that it may be used for industrial production.

The depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution over petroleum-based plastics have driven the demand for sustainable biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA). Lactide (LD) is the key monomer for synthesis of high-molecular-weight PLA. Herein, we propose amphiphilic zeolite beta-stabilized Pickering emulsion as a high-efficiency interfacial catalytic platform for LD synthesis. Amphiphilic zeolite beta is fabricated by the surface modification of dimethyldiethoxysilane, enabling the formation of stable water-in-oil Pickering emulsions. The microstructure of the emulsion, catalytic performances, and process intensification mechanism are systematically investigated. Under optimized conditions (100 mg zeolite beta, 3 mL of p-xylene, 0.05 mL of H2O, and 140 °C, 2 h), lactic acid (LA) conversion and LD yield reaches 98.3% and 95.78%, respectively. The superior performance arises from three synergistic effects in Pickering emulsion: (1) Enhanced mass transfer via a large oil–water interface; (2) By precisely matching Brønsted acidic sites with the reaction microenvironment, the coupling of LA esterification to LD and hydrolysis of lactate oligomers to regenerate LA is achieved, contributing to effective conversion of LA; (3) Rapid spatial isolation of oil-soluble LD in the oil phase to inhibit hydrolysis. This work offers a low-energy and high-efficiency synthesis route for LD, advancing sustainable PLA production.

Most of the current non-pharmacological treatment strategies for atherosclerosis (AS) suffer from poor penetration into the plaque and only aim at a certain factor in its formation process, resulting in limited therapeutic effect. Herein, a kind of nanomotor with dual-mode propulsion is constructed, which is sensitive to higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the AS site and near-infrared (NIR) laser by the covalent binding and self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and L-arginine (LA) with immobilization of Au nanoparticles. NIR laser irradiation can be used as a driving force and to ablate inflammatory macrophages through the photothermal effect. The nitric oxide (NO) released by the nanomotors can be used as another driving force and a therapeutic agent to promote endothelial repair in the plaque site. LA can eliminate ROS in the inflammatory site, and β-CD can promote the removal of cholesterol from foam cells. In particular, the two driving modes of nanomotors synergistically promote their aggregation and penetration in the plaque. This kind of nanomotor can regulate the microenvironment of AS in multiple ways, including combination therapy for endothelial repair, lipid clearance, and reducing ROS, which is expected to become a potential non-pharmacological strategy in the treatment of AS.
