Sodium persulfate (PS) is a promising oxidant in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs); however, its uncontrollable decomposition limits its application. Herein, a Bi2S3/BiO1−xCl heterojunction with appropriate oxygen vacancies (OVs) was synthesized via a microwave-assisted method, which can efficiently regulate PS to produce an active species population (ASP; h+, ˙O2−, ˙SO4−, ˙OH and 1O2) through optimizing electron transport channels (ETCs). In addition, the ASP formation rates can be modulated by the cooperation of OVs with the interfacial electric field (IEF) in the heterostructure, thus dramatically hindering the invalid consumption of the ASP and significantly enhancing the catalytic efficiency. Simultaneously, the adsorption energy and adsorption configuration of PS on the heterostructure were obtained by theoretical calculation. A reasonable mechanism was proposed through trapping experiments and ESR techniques. This work not only provides a new avenue to activate PS through defect engineering but also offers a novel idea to modulate the ASP formation rates for boosting the photocatalytic performance through optimizing ETCs and interfacial engineering.

In this work, we fabricated a novel photoelectrochemical immunosensor for assay of DNA methylation , where Bi 2 S 3 nanorods were used as photoelectric conversion material, MBD1 protein (a kind of methyl bonding domain protein) was used as DNA methylation recognizing unit, anti-his tag antibody was used to further inhibit the photocurrent and increase the detection sensitivity. The results demonstrated that Bi 2 S 3 possessed excellent photoelectron property. The detection conditions, such as Bi 2 S 3 concentration, MBD1 protein concentration, incubation time of MBD1 protein, antibody concentration and antibody incubation time, were optimized. Under optimal experimental conditions, the photocurrent variation was proportional to the logarithm of methylated target DNA concentration from 10 −9 to 10 –13 M with detection limit of 3.5×10 –14 M ( S / N =3). Moreover, the immunosensor presented high detection specificity, even distinguishing single-base mismatched sequence.

The band gaps of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) and bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) are about 2.40 eV and 1.30 eV, respectively. Although both BiVO4and Bi2S3are capable of strong visible light absorption, electron–hole recombination occurs easily. To solve this problem, we designed a one-step hydrothermal method for synthesizing a Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3)/Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) heterojunction using polyvinylpyrrolidone K-30 (PVP) as a structure-directing agent, and 2-Amino-3-mercaptopropanoic acid (l-cysteine) as a sulfur source. The pH of the reaction solution was regulated to yield different products: when the pH was 7.5, only monoclinic BiVO4was produced (sample 7.5); when the pH was 8.0 or 8.5, both Bi2S3and BiVO4were produced (samples 8.0 and 8.5); and when the pH was 9.0, only Bi2S3was produced (sample 9.0). In sample 8.0, Bi2S3and BiVO4were closely integrated with each other, with Bi2S3particles formed on the surface of concentric BiVO4layers, but the two compounds grew separately in a pH solution of 8.5. Visible-light photocatalytic degradation experiments demonstrated that the degradation efficiency of the Bi2S3/BiVO4heterojunction was highest when prepared under a pH of 8.0. The initial rhodamine B in the solution (5 mg/L) was completely degraded within three hours. Recycling experiments verified the high stability of Bi2S3/BiVO4. The synthesis method proposed in this paper is expected to enable large-scale and practical use of Bi2S3/BiVO4.Keywords:heterojunction;photocatalysis;hydrothermal method;bismuth vanadate;bismuth sulfide;pH value

To achieve an effective and straightforward method for Cr(VI) removal from industrial wastewater, a composite Bi 2 S 3 /PDA/PEI material (BSPP) was successfully prepared through in-situ polymerization of polydopamine (PDA) followed by chemical grafting with polyethylenimine (PEI) on the surface of Bi 2 S 3 materials for round-the-clock highly efficient Cr(VI) removal from actual industrial electroplating wastewater. Under dark conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) by BSPP reaches 780.75 mg/g. Interestingly, when exposed to light, the maximum Cr(VI) removal capacity was further increased to 1333.21 mg/g. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) analyses indicate that BSPP not only reduces Cr(VI) to Cr(III) under light condition, but also facilitates the significant decrease of total chromium content. Notably, under natural sunlight exposure outdoors, BSPP is capable of completely eliminating Cr(VI) from both plating cleaning solutions and waste plating solutions. More importantly, BSPP maintains its original Cr(VI) removal efficiency after nine cycles within plating cleaning solutions and six cycles within waste plating solutions. Large-scale testing results indicate that BSPP can effectively treat substantial volumes of electroplating wastewater to comply with national Cr(VI) discharge standards. These findings suggest that BSPP represents a promising material for continuous 24-hour Cr(VI) treatment in industrial electroplating wastewater.

The development of flexible membrane-shaped photocatalysts with superior catalytic activity for the treatment of heavy metals in wastewater is of great significance, but it remains an extremely large challenge. In this work, atom co-sharing BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 Z-scheme heterostructures were constructed in situ on flexible carbon fiber cloth substrate by combining solvothermal and ion exchange method. The prepared CFC/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 membrane-shaped photocatalyst exhibits good flexibility, water permeability and retrievability. After adsorption for 1 h and visible-light irradiation for 60 min, controllable and optimized synthesized CFC/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 –2 shows exceptional activity towards hexavalent chromium with the removal efficiency of 91%. The excellent reduction performance is attributed to the individual charge transport path of Z-scheme, which provides the driving force for photocarriers transport and excellent redox ability. In addition, the tight interfacial contact between BiOBr and Bi 2 S 3 by sharing bismuth atoms allows for rapid charge transfer and accelerates photogenerated carrier separation. This study provides some constructive insights for developing an immobilized membrane-shaped photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic activity and easy recovery to treat chrome-containing wastewater, which has a promising application in the field of water remediation.

As the main fission products of nuclear power plants, radioactive iodine isotopes are of great concern because of their great harm to public safety. In this work, a nanocomposite of bismuth sulfide coated with the electrospinning SiO2 nanofibers with a diameter of about 280 nm nanostructure-based membranes (Bi2S3@SiO2) was successfully prepared to dispose of gaseous iodine. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of Bi2S3@SiO2 for iodine can be up to 1180 mg g–1, which is higher than the commercial silver-exchanged zeolite (AgZ) and other bismuth-based adsorbents. Chemisorption is the major adsorption behavior of iodine capture. Thermogravimetric analysis results demonstrated that the Bi2S3@SiO2 nanocomposites were stable up to 300 °C before and after capturing iodine. X-ray diffraction results revealed that BiSI was initially formed and then transformed to BiI3. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the sulfur element remains in the samples after interacting with iodine, and X-ray absorption near-edge spectra further confirmed that its oxidation states are a mixture of S0, S3+, and S6+. The oxidation states of bismuth and iodine are Bi3+ and I–, respectively, revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The reactions between Bi2S3@SiO2 nanocomposites and I2 vapor are as follows: I2 was reduced to be I– and the BiI3 crystalline phase is the final form; S2– in Bi2S3 was oxidized to higher valences (S0, S3+, and S6+), and amorphous phases are their final forms. The research results demonstrated that the nanostructure-based membranes prepared by this work would be a promising candidate nanomaterial for capturing iodine in the plant off-gas streams.

A constructed MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /BiVO 4 ternary photocatalyst(MBB) mainly with a S-scheme heterostructure was loaded on a 3D lignosulfonate modified poly(vinyl formal) sponge to obtain a novel composite sponge(PLS-MBB) with an enhanced performance in synergistic adsorption and photo-Fenton degradation of various fluoroquinolones(FQs) in water. The synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis of PLS-MBB notably improved the applicable pH from 2.0 to 9.0 and reduced the dosage of Fe 2+ to 0.014 mmol/L in Fenton reaction , which could achieve the degradation efficiency of 92.8 % for FQs within 60.0 min at pH 6.0. The photo-generated electrons by MBB and the redox transformation of Mo(IV)/Mo(VI) and Bi(III)/Bi(V) accelerated the conversion of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ ; besides, the efficient adsorption of FQs on the sponge carrier promoted the surface degradation in solution, thereby causing an enhanced photo-Fenton reaction. This work provided a novel strategy to improve photo-Fenton reaction and accordingly fabricated a talented material for effective removal of organic contaminants in water.

The potential applications of wearable sensors in health monitoring, micro-environment detection, and advanced soft electronic noses have attracted widespread attention. However, due to the inherent limitations of traditional organic flexible substrates, simultaneously achieving excellent flexibility, high sensitivity, robustness, and breathability remains a significant challenge. Herein, using the electrospinning method, a flexible TPU substrate film was prepared, and Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite materials were synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal method. Au nanoparticles were attached to the surface of the composite material using sodium borohydride, and finally, the surface impregnation method was used to successfully prepare the Au-Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x -TPU flexible electrospun mat. The as-prepared sensor demonstrated an outstanding response of 154 % to 100 ppm NH 3 at room temperature, coupled with high selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. The strain properties of the sensor were also evaluated, showcasing its potential for human motion and physiological feature detection, such as breathing, swallowing, and limb movements. The study’s findings indicated that the Au-Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x -TPU electrospun mat sensor has promising applications in flexible electronics, wearable environmental monitoring devices, and human healthy monitoring.

Bismuth oxysulfide (Bi 2 O 2 S), as a unique new two-dimensional layered material, has gradually attracted the interest of researchers because of its excellent photoelectric properties. How to enhance its charge kinetics is the key to improve photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties. Herein, the cascade type II-I heterostructure of Bi 2 O 2 S/Bi 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 O (oxygen doping) was rationally fabricated by oxygen doping for efficient PEC water splitting through one-step hydrothermal method. Bi 2 S 3 was in close contact with Bi 2 O 2 S through Bi atom sharing, while ZnIn 2 S 4 O has enhanced polarity. The double-synergistic effect of the cascade II-I heterojunction with strong interface interaction and asymmetric crystal modification could greatly promote the transfer efficiency of the surface charge and the bulk charge, inhibited the photogenerated carrier recombination, and enhanced the overall charge dynamics. The results showed that the photocurrent density of Bi 2 O 2 S/Bi 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 O composite photoanode was 4.82 mA cm −2 under the condition of 1.23 V vs. RHE, which was 9.09 times with that of monomer Bi 2 O 2 S. This study opened up a new way for the application of Bi 2 O 2 S-based photoelectrodes in the field of PEC water splitting.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) serves as an outstanding solid lubricant applied in harsh service conditions. However, enhancing its lubricating, antioxidative and anti-wear capabilities over a broader temperature range stills a formidable challenge, owing to its susceptibility to oxidation at high-temperature. In this work, we achieved superior wide-temperature lubrication from room temperature (RT) to 800 ℃ via the design of core-shell structure, with the introduction of Bi 2 O 3 nanoparticles and encapsulation of SiO 2 shell, and phosphate as binder. At RT and 200 ℃, stable low friction was realized through the synergistic interlayer sliding of MoS 2 and in-situ formed Bi 2 S 3 with low shear strength. At 400 ℃, the protective SiO 2 shell inhibited the oxidation of the core lubricating phase, thus enabling MoS 2 and Bi 2 S 3 to retain their lubricating functionality. When the temperature exceeded 600 ℃, the remarkable enhancement in lubricating property (with a coefficient of friction of 0.13–0.16) was attributed to the synergy of phosphate molten-phase lubrication and low-shear lubricating phases (Bi 2 S 3 and Bi 2 MoO 6 ). An amorphous phosphate molten layer formed at high temperatures and constructed a readily shearable lubricating interface. Low-shear lamellar-chain structure Bi 2 S 3 , weak interlayer van der Waals forces reduced the sliding resistance. The distorted MoO 6 octahedral structure of Bi 2 MoO 6 induced an enlarged interlayer distance and weakened interionic coupling, which enhanced shear capability and excellent high-temperature lubrication performance. This work provides some reference for improving wide-temperature-range lubricating capabilities of solid lubricating materials.

Solar energy-driven photoinduced cathodic protection (PICP) technology utilizes solar energy to protect marine metallic structures against severe marine corrosion. To enhance the solar energy utilization and strengthen dark-state application for realizing long-term protection, herein, a 3D nanothorn cluster-like WO 3 /ZnO/Zn-Bi 2 S 3 multijunction with electron-storage characteristic and adjustable energy band was constructed. It exhibited an enhanced continuous release of photogenerated electron and sustained cathodic protection in dark conditions. Exposed to only 100 s of simulated sunlight irradiation, the WO 3 /ZnO/Zn-Bi 2 S 3 could store 5.27×10 −2 C electrons and provide up to 5460 s of sustained CP for the coupled metal after light stops, which was 10.8 and 3.5 times higher than those of WO 3 /ZnO (4.89×10 −3 C) and WO 3 /Zn-Bi 2 S 3 (1.51×10 −2 C), respectively. The WO 3 nanothorn cluster-like substrate with reversible valence transformation of W 6+ /W 5+ together with the large surface area and one-dimensional transmission path can store photogenerated electrons under illumination and release photogenerated electrons after light stops efficiently. Notably, the tri-phase heterojunction with introduction of intermediate “Carrier Springboard” ZnO between WO 3 and Zn-Bi 2 S 3 contributed to the building of well-matched energy band gradient to strengthen the directional backward transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes. The energy band of Bi 2 S 3 sensitizer was adjusted towards negative direction by doping with zinc element to boost PICP application performance. The reversible valence transformation of Bi 3+ /Bi 5+ could promote the consumption of photogenerated holes. These synergistically enhanced the sustained PICP performance of the WO 3 /ZnO/Zn-Bi 2 S 3 photoelectrode both in dark and light conditions. This design shed light on energy-storage photoelectrodes for long-term PICP of metallic materials.

The specific energies and energy densities of lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries are influenced by various cell parameters, including the sulfur loading, the sulfur weight percentage in the cathode, and the electrolyte/sulfur ratio. An In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 @rGO heterostructure was obtained by growing indium sulfide nanoparticles on the surface of bismuth sulfide nanoflowers in a graphene oxide (GO) solution via a one-step solvothermal approach. This structure was introduced as a modified separator/dual-layer sulfur cathode for Li-S batteries. The Bi 2 S 3 /In 2 S 3 heterointerfaces act as active sites to speed up interfacial electron transfer, along with the entrapment, diffusion, and transformation of lithium polysulfides. A Li-S cell containing a dual-layer sulfur cathode (thin layer of In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 @rGO sandwiched between two thick layers of sulfur) and coupled with an In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 @rGO-coated separator suppressed the polysulfide shuttle effect. The cell based on the dual-layer sulfur cathode technology and operated at a current rate of 0.3C achieved a high capacity (7.1 mAh cm −2 ) after the 200th cycle, giving an electrolyte/sulfur ratio (10 µL mg −1 ) under a high sulfur loading (11.53 mg cm −2 ). These results demonstrate the unique nature of the dual-layer sulfur cathode technique, which can yield high energy density Li-S batteries with high sulfur loadings and low electrolyte/sulfur ratios.
