Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 (BC) Z -scheme heterojunction assembled with graphene aerogel (GA) was successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal associated with natural seasoning method. The physico-chemical, morphological and photoelectric properties of the Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /GA (BCGA) composite was characterized by various instruments, and its photocatalysis performance for persulfate (PDS) activation was explored in the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) under simulated sunlight (SSL) irradiation. The optimal mass ratio of BC was 30 % (abbreviated as BCGA-30) in BCGA. Under the optimal conditions (10 mg/L CIP, 50 mg/L PDS, pH = 6.66 and 0.2 g/L BCGA-30), the degradation rate of CIP was 94.3 %, which was 4.18 times that of BC. As the carrier of BC, GA could promote the light absorption and the photo-induced electron transfer of BCGA-30. The removal efficiency of CIP was remained at 80.2 % after five cycles, illustrating that BCGA-30 had an excellent repeatability. Based on the results of the energy band structures , HR-TEM, XPS and free radical quenching experiments, the heterojunction type of composites and possible photocatalytic activation mechanism during CIP degradation were confirmed over BCGA-30/PDS/SSL system. The BCGA-30/PDS/SSL system might be a potential treatment process for the removal of antibiotics wastewater.

A nitrogen-deficient g-C 3 N 4 -BiOBr-Bi 2 WO 6 /PVDF composite ultrafiltration membrane with high-efficiency retention and degradation capabilities for various dyes and antibiotics was prepared using a simple in situ deposition combined with phase inversion method. Under normal pressure, the membrane achieved a retention rate of over 95 % for multiple dyes, featured numerous hydrophilic sites, and demonstrated an average pollutant flux of 147.6L·m −2 ·h −1 . In a simulated visible solar light flow-circulation device, the composite membrane exhibited excellent efficiency and final degradation performance, achieving a degradation rate of 97.7 % for RhB within 1 h and a final degradation rate of 99.6 %. DFT calculations provided evidence for the potential distribution and interaction forces between nanoparticles and PVDF molecules, supporting the observed results. The in situ synthesized BiOBr nanomaterials grow and embed within the membrane, forming heterojunctions with an internal electric field alongside other materials. The incorporation of heterojunction materials improves the surface and internal physical structure of the PVDF membrane, endowing it with excellent photocatalytic degradation performance, enhanced hydrophilicity, and improved retention capabilities. Additionally, the composite membrane exhibits outstanding self-cleaning properties. This work provides a broad-spectrum and efficient solution for water pollution treatment.

Catalysts that effectively degrade organic pollutants and exhibit bactericidal properties are highly up-and-compromising for water treatment applications. To overcome the inherent limitation that the rapid recombination of the photogenerated carriers and to extend the practical utility of Bi 2 WO 6 , a flower-like structure of 7 wt.% Er 3+ -doped Bi 2 WO 6 (Er 7% -Bi 2 WO 6 ) capable of oxygen vacancy and crystal defect was synthesized using a straightforward hydrothermal method. Under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), the Er 7% -Bi 2 WO 6 achieved a Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation efficiency of 92% within 80 min, significantly surpassing that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 . The kinetic rate constant of Er 7% -Bi 2 WO 6 was determined to be 0.0288 min −1 , which is 5.9 times higher than the 0.0049 min −1 observed for Bi 2 WO 6 . Additionally, the bactericidal rate against Escherichia coli after 120 min of visible light exposure was 93.9%, nearly twice that of Bi 2 WO 6 at 49.8%. Density functional theory calculations and experimental results confirmed that doping with Er 3+ introduced lower band gap and more photogenerated carriers, enhanced visible light absorption, and ultimately improved the photocatalytic performance. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical trapping experiments identified h⁺ and ·O 2 ⁻ as the primary active species generated during the photocatalytic process of Er 7% -Bi 2 WO 6 . The RhB removal rate remained above 90% after five degradation cycles, and the treatment efficacy on actual water samples was 76%. This study highlights the potential of Er-doped Bi 2 WO 6 to enhance both photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and bactericidal performance, thereby expanding the application scope of Bi 2 WO 6 in water treatment. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is a practical solution to the energy dilemma and environmental damage caused by greenhouse gases, and it is very important to explore high-efficiency photocatalysts. In this study, a novel Bi 2 WO 6 /C 3 N 5 step(S)-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed and applied for CO 2 photoreduction. The 2D/2D structure showed excellent photocatalytic properties, with methane production reaching 1.976 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 and selectivity reaching 100 % under 5 hours of visible light irradiation. The result indicates that combining Bi 2 WO 6 and C 3 N 5 can promote interfacial charge separation and maintain the optimal reducing ability of photogenerated electrons. Based on experimental and theoretical calculations, we characterized the reaction mechanism and heterojunction formation mechanism. This study offers a novel approach to improve the selectivity and photocatalytic efficiency of CO 2 reduction products.

Developing effective detection methods for disease markers is essential for clinical diagnosis and therapeutic prognostic assessment. In this work, hollow Bi-doped Bi 2 WO 6 was synthesized by using carbon sphere as template, and then it was used as the label of secondary antibody to induce current polarity reversal in the flower shaped ZnIn 2 S 4 based photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor. Thus the easily disturbed anodic photocurrent was converted to cathodic photocurrent with better resistance to interference from reducing substances. Furthermore, the reversal of polarity made the influence of background signal decrease, the detection range become wide, and the sensitivity increase. The introduced poly(dopamine) film could inhibit the anodic photocurrent of ZnIn 2 S 4 in addition to fixing antibody, assisting Bi 2 WO 6 in inducing subsequent current polarity conversion. Under the optimized conditions, the linear response range of the sandwich immunosensor was as wide as 0.0005−20.0 ng/mL, with a quite low limit of 0.18 pg/mL for the assay of model molecule carcinoembryonic antigen. The PEC sensor also exhibited satisfying selectivity and stability. It was applied to detect serum samples and satisfactory results were achieved.

Photocatalytic synthesis of H 2 O 2 from O 2 reduction coupled with selective oxidation of organics into value-added chemicals is highly appealing; however, the troubling separation process presents a technical difficulty when both H 2 O 2 and organic products are obtained in a homogeneous solution. Herein, an amphiphilic Bi 2 WO 6 catalyst was synthesized through a facile solvothermal method based on the synergetic modification with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups, which enables the construction of Pickering emulsion interfacial photocatalysis systems in various organic/water mixtures to facilitate synchronous production and spontaneous separation of H 2 O 2 and value-added organics. The amphiphilic Bi 2 WO 6 catalyst exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance compared to its oleophilic and hydrophilic counterparts, resulting in remarkable generation rates of H 2 O 2 and benzaldehyde reaching up to 121.53 and 99.25 mmol g −1 h −1 , respectively, in a benzyl-alcohol/water biphasic system under simulated sunlight. The excellent photocatalytic performance could be maintained in a long-term reaction process. The photocatalytic mechanism was investigated through various control experiments and detailed characterizations. The interfacial photocatalysis played a crucial role in accelerating the redox reactions, showcasing its favorable applicability in various organic/water biphasic systems. This study provides guidelines for the realization of interfacial photocatalysis assisted by amphiphilic semiconductors, opening up a novel strategy to the simultaneous production of solar fuels and organic chemicals.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted significant attention in photocatalytic water purification due to their structural designability and sufficiently negative conduction band edges. However, the limited oxidation capacity of single COFs and the low utilization rate of photogenerated carriers result in suboptimal catalytic activity. To address these challenges, we propose a two-level regulation strategy that involves ligand engineering and the introduction of a piezoelectric field to enhance the photocatalytic performance of COF-based photocatalysts. In this study, we combined the piezoelectric material Bi 2 WO 6 with COFs modified with different ligands to design a series of Bi 2 WO 6 /R-COFs (R=H, F, CH 3 O) heterojunctions. Modifying COFs with –OCH 3 functional group tuned the local electron distribution, thereby remarkably improving photogenerated electrons transfer rate constant. Besides, the incorporation of Bi 2 WO 6 generated a piezoelectric field under ultrasound, which provides a strong driving force for photocatalytic. Meanwhile, the construction of the heterojunctions offered multi-channel for the generation of reactive oxygen species. As a result, the photocatalytic degradation rate of Bi 2 WO 6 /CH 3 O-COFs reached 93.5 % toward sulfamethoxazole within 48 min under ultrasound-coupled light irradiation, which is nearly three times higher than Bi 2 WO 6 /H-COFs. Furthermore, Bi 2 WO 6 /CH 3 O-COFs demonstrated superior degradation performance for other pollutants, including p-chlorophenol, bisphenol A, tetracycline, and phenol, with degradation efficiencies of 99.0 %, 98.4 %, 93.5 % and 88.1 %, respectively. This work proposes a two-level modulation strategy that significantly enhances the antibiotic degradation performance of COF-based catalysts, offering a new perspective for the design of photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

2D layered Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) is a widely used attractive photocatalyst for degrading VOCs, but the low visible-light utilization and the easy stacking 2D nanosheets (NSs) limit photocatalysis efficiency and stability. Here, inspired by Eucalyptus, a synergistic strategy of multiscale domain-confinement and electrostatic force action, based on electrospinning is proposed, for fabricating a heteromorphic BWO photocatalyst. It is found that BWO NSs can grow radially in an orderly spaced arrangement along BWO nanofibers (NFs) during sintering, thereby forming 1D/2D BWO junctions like eucalyptus leaves. This interpenetrating 1D/2D network structure not only solves the easy stacking problem of BWO NSs but also selectively exposes the {010} crystal planes that exhibit efficient hole oxidation. In addition, this peculiar structure enriches electrons at the 1D/2D interface to avoid carrier recombination, thus improving the photocatalytic activity. The photocatalyst material with a reduced bandgap width from 2.56 to 2.49 eV can rapidly degrade 100% of acetaldehyde under visible light without using sacrificial agents and photosensitizers and shows superior stability for eight cycles without any decay. This study provides a feasible method to synthesize an efficient and stable BWO photocatalyst.

Organic-inorganic composite photoactive materials can combine the merits of organic and inorganic components and show better performance in comparison with single-component materials. In this work, a novel photoactive material was synthesized through chemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) on the surface of hydrothermally prepared Bi 2 WO 6 , followed by modification of self-polymerized dopamine (PDA). The integration of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and Bi 2 WO 6 effectively facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thus demonstrated substantially strong photoelectrochemical signal compared to pure Bi 2 WO 6 . The PDA film, with abundant functional groups, could further sensitize the material and facilitate the immobilization of recognition units. As a proof of application, the composite was combined with carcinoembryonic antibody to construct an immunosensor for carcinoembryonic antigen sensing. Resultantly, although the components and construction procedure were simple, the prepared sensor demonstrated a broad linear detection range of 0.001–20 ng/mL and a relative low detection limit of 0.50 pg/mL. It also showed high selectivity and stability. Its practical feasibility was confirmed by detecting real samples and yielding satisfactory results.

Pure bismuth tungsten oxide (BWO) photocatalysts suffer from inherent limitations, including low charge carrier separation efficiency, a narrow visible light response range, and insufficient active surface sites, which restrict their practical applications in the treatment of organic pollutants in water. In this study, we successfully prepared bismuth-rich pentabismuth heptaoxide iodide (Bi 5 O 7 I)/oxygen vacancy bismuth tungsten oxide (Ov-Bi 2 WO 6 , OvBWO) composite photocatalysts with Bi 5 O 7 I mass fractions of 5%, 7%, 9%, 11%, and 13% through a simple ultrasonic-assisted self-assembly method. Photocatalytic performance tests revealed that the Bi 5 O 7 I/OvBWO composite with an 11% Bi 5 O 7 I mass fraction exhibited the optimal degradation rate, achieving a tetracycline (TC) removal rate of 89.3% within 60 min of visible light irradiation, representing improvements of 33.0% and 27.9% compared to BWO and BiOI, respectively. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that oxygen vacancies introduce defect levels into the bandgap of BWO, not only extending the visible light response range but also significantly increasing the specific surface area. The integration of bismuth-rich Bi 5 O 7 I with OvBWO forms a type II heterojunction, effectively enhancing the separation and migration efficiency of charge carriers. The synergistic effects of oxygen vacancies, bismuth-rich modification, and interfacial electric fields enhance both the mass transfer performance and photocatalytic activity of BWO, while markedly boosting the capacity for TC degradation. This research provides novel insights for the structural design and performance optimization of BWO-based photocatalysts and offers important technical references for the efficient remediation of organic pollutants in water.

This research examined the characteristics and performance of a Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) based composite manufactured in a simple way for the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) under 50-watt LED-COB visible light. Various techniques such as SEM/EDS, TEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, TGA, XPS and EPR were used to characterize the BWO composite. The impact of photocatalyst dosage, initial pH and AMX concentration on the catalytic decomposition of AMX was studied. Based on the EPR signals, • OH and • O 2 − are effective factors in the degradation of AMX. The findings indicated that the effectiveness of AMX degradation was influenced by pH, with optimal performance achieved at pH 3, a concentration of 20 mg/L AMX, a catalyst dose of 0.2 g/L and a temperature of 25°C, resulting in a 92.5% removal rate. The investigation also showed that the photocatalytic breakdown of AMX followed the Langmuir–Hinshelwood equation. Additionally, the photodegradation efficiency of AMX increased with temperature, reaching over 98% at 40°C and 50°C. At pH 3, the BWO composite's reusability for the degradation of AMX decreases with five reaction cycles from 98.00% in the first cycle to 78.00% in the fifth, without washing or thermal treatment. Using LC–MS/MS analysis, the breakdown mechanism and potential degradation products of AMX were investigated. This study presents a single-step hydrothermal approach for fabricating Bi 2 WO 6 /Bi 2 O 3 heterojunctions, marking a significant advancement in the development of sustainable and eco-friendly photocatalytic materials for the removal of antibiotics and organic contaminants from water. Summary Oxygen-deficient Bi 2 WO 6 made hydrothermally exhibits good photocatalytic activity in visible light Measurement of free radicals using EPR spectroscopy during amoxicillin degradation Amoxicillin removal efficiency reached 98.76% after exposure to visible light The prepared Bi 2 WO 6 can be reused for up to five cycles while maintaining high stability

Development of efficient photocatalysts is vital for light-driven removal of refractory antibiotics. Herein, Bi 2 WO 6 microspheres were successfully anchored on the surface of bentonite, and metallic Bi was reduced in-situ by a one-step solvothermal method. Notably, the Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT with a mass ratio of 0.15:1:0.1 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity toward degradation of tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) after 120 min of visible light irradiation, and their reaction rate constants were 8.0 and 5.5 folds higher than that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. The boosted photocatalytic activity over Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT was ascribed to the establishment of electrostatic repulsion and SPR effect, which synergistically promoted charges transfer, thus achieving more h + and ·O 2 − radical generation. Moreover, possible TC and CIP degradation pathways over Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT were proposed based on the identified intermediates, and most of the intermediates were less toxic than TC and CIP. The study provides options to develop high-efficiency photocatalytic composites for contaminants elimination using semiconductors and readily available bentonite.
