S-Scheme In2O3 Nanoparticle/BiOBr Nanoplate Heterojunctions for Improved Photocatalytic Dye Degradation and Cr(VI) Reduction

Tao Xian,Hongqin Li,Xiaofeng Sun,Yashan Huo,Lijing Di,Chenyang Sun,Hua Yang

The In2O3 nanoparticles were homogeneously attached on the BiOBr nanoplate surface to obtain S-scheme In2O3/BiOBr heterojunction photocatalysts by a hydrothermal route. The purity, crystal structure, chemical state, morphology, light absorption property, and photogenerated charge behavior of composites were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, UV–vis DRS, PL, ESR, and electrochemical tests. The removal of dyes (acid orange 7 (AO7), acid orange 10 (AO10), and rhodamine B (RhB)) and Cr(VI) was employed to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of In2O3/BiOBr composites irradiated by simulated sunlight. The results indicate that the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr can be remarkably promoted after the decoration of In2O3 nanoparticles, and the best photocatalytic activity was achieved over an 8% In2O3/BiOBr sample. The 8% In2O3/BiOBr sample also indicates outstanding synergistic photocatalytic performance for the removal of the heavy metal ion/dye mixture (AO7/Cr(VI) and RhB/Cr(VI)). It is found that the decoration of In2O3 nanoparticles can accelerate the transfer and separation of photoinduced electrons and holes in BiOBr nanoplates. The energy band structure, work function, and Fermi level of BiOBr and In2O3 were computed through the density functional theory calculation. Based on the above investigation, the photocatalytic mechanism of the S-scheme In2O3/BiOBr composite was discussed.

Boosting Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation via In Situ Constructing Bi Metal Active Sites over BiOBr/BiOI Heterojunction

Kaiyue Gao,Haibao Zhu,Chengming Zhang,Xiaojie Song,Li Lao,Liping Ni,Jianli Chen,Congliang Cheng,Xiufang Wang

The main obstacles to the photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen are the low separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and the few activation sites for nitrogen. It is highly desirable to explore new strategies for improving the nitrogen fixation performance of catalysts. Herein, the Bi metal active sites are constructed on the surface of BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction by in situ reaction, which promote the absorption, activation, and dissociation of nitrogen molecules. Moreover, the existence of Bi metal and BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction enhances the light absorption ability and facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. The theoretical calculation also demonstrates that the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi composite has excellent electron structure and electron transfer efficiency. So, the ternary BiOBr/BiOI/Bi catalyst shows excellent performance of photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia. The nitrogen reduction rate is 221.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 7.6 and 5 times higher than that of pure BiOBr and BiOBr/BiOI. The mechanism of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation of the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi is proposed based on the experimental and theoretical results. This study provides a novel method for improving the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction performance of catalysts.

BiOBr/MgFe2O4 composite as a novel catalyst for the sonocatalytic removal of tetracycline in aqueous environment

Ling-Ling He,Jing-Yi Bai,Xiao-Yan Li,Shuang Qi,Song Li,Xin Wang

A series of BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites were synthesized and characterized. Tetracycline (TET) was used as a model antibiotic to verify the sonocatalytic activities of these BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites. When the mass ratio of BiOBr to MgFe 2 O 4 in the BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites was 20%, the BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composite (BM-20) showed the best catalytic performance to the sonocatalytic removal of TET. Under the optimum conditions, such as the addition of catalyst 2.0 g/L, pH 7 and ultrasonic power 500 W, the initial concentration of TET 10 mg/L, the sonocatalytic removal rate of TET reached 91.10±2.36% in 30 min using BM-20 as a sonocatalyst, which was significantly better than that of MgFe 2 O 4 (52.3±2.23%). The generated hydroxyl free radicals (•OH), holes ( h + ) and superoxide anion radical (•O 2 − ) played major roles in the sonocatalytic removal process. The improved sonocatalytic performance of BM-20 was due to the S-scheme heterojunction formed between BiOBr and MgFe 2 O 4 , which could separate electron-hole ( e − -h + ) pairs effectively. Besides, BM-20 had great stability and reusability. To conclude, the fabrication of heterojunction was an effective method to improve the sonocatalytic performance of catalyst. The BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites could be satisfactory utilized as a catalyst in the sonocatalytic elimination of organic contaminant.

Self-Assembly of a 3D Hollow BiOBr@Bi-MOF Heterostructure with Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes

Mei-Ling Xu,Xiao-Jie Jiang,Jia-Ran Li,Fu-Ji Wang,Kui Li,Xin Cheng

Considering the flexibility, adjustable pore structure, and abundant active sites of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), rational design and fine control of the MOF-based hetero-nanocrystals is a highly important and challenging subject. In this work, self-assembly of a 3D hollow BiOBr@Bi-MOF microsphere was fabricated through precisely controlled dissociation kinetics of the self-sacrificial template (BiOBr) for the first time, where the residual quantity of BiOBr and the formation of Bi-MOF were carefully regulated by changing the reaction time and the capability of coordination. Meanwhile, the hollow microstructure was formed in BiOBr@Bi-MOF through the Oswald ripening mechanism to separate photogenerated electron–hole pairs and increase the adsorption capacity of Bi-MOF for dyes, which significantly enhanced the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RhB from 56.4% for BiOBr to 99.4% for the optimal BiOBr@Bi-MOF microsphere. This research broadens the selectivity of semiconductor/MOF hetero-nanocrystals with reasonable design and flexible synthesis.

Few-layer WS2 modified BiOBr nanosheets with enhanced broad-spectrum photocatalytic activity towards various pollutants removal

Shuai Fu,Xianming Liu,Yunhui Yan,Li Li,Haiping Liu,Fengying Zhao,Jianguo Zhou

Herein, an efficient broad-spectrum WS 2 /BiOBr heterostructure with ultrathin nanosheet was successfully prepared by one-pot hydrothermal route. The self-assembled flower-like WS 2 /BiOBr nanostructure was formed by few-layer WS 2 and BiOBr nanosheets. The optimized heterojunction presented broad-spectrum high-efficiency photocatalytic activity towards the removal of various pollutants under visible-light irradiation, including organic dyes, antibiotics and phenols. This efficiency was linked to high light harvesting combined with effective charge separation/transfer. Meanwhile, the degradation efficiencies varied with nature of the pollutant decreased in the following order: LR5B (99%) > MNZ (97%) >  TC (92%) >  OTC (92%) >  RhB (90%) > CIP (83%) >  MB (78%) > MO (62%) >  bisphenol (42%) > phenol (40%). The photocatalytic process of ciprofloxacin was explored, and the results indicated that high ciprofloxacin concentrations, low pH values and elevated concentrations of ions (PO 4 3− , HPO 4 2‐ , H 2 PO 4 − , and Cu 2+ ) restrained the photocatalytic performances. Trapping experiments and ESR revealed the significant contribution of holes (h + ) in the mechanism, where both superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH) acted as assistants. Overall, this work could offer a new protocol for the design of highly efficient heterostructure photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Construction of Mn3O4@BiOBr direct Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient norfloxacin removal: Distinguishing adsorptive and photocatalytic pathways

Su Xu,HuaYing Li,Chao Wang,TsingHai Wang

Efficient charge transfer is crucial for photocatalytic pollutant removal, essential for sustainable water treatment. Herein, a Mn3O4@BiOBr heterojunction was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method, combining the multivalent redox properties of Mn3O4 with the visible-light responsiveness of BiOBr. Under irradiation, the removal efficiency of norfloxacin (NOR) increased from approximately 80% with pristine BiOBr to around 90% with Mn3O4@BiOBr, attributed to the enhanced suppression of electron–hole recombination. Radical scavenging tests revealed that photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (O2•−) were the primary reactive species driving the degradation process. The kinetics of NOR degradation were significantly influenced by competitive adsorption of co-existing anions and the complexation with divalent cations. Despite high stability, the reusability of the composite was limited by the accumulation of NOR and intermediates on active sites, highlighting the need to accelerate product desorption. This study provides mechanistic insights and practical guidance for designing visible-light-driven photocatalysts for efficient antibiotic removal.

Synergistic adsorption and Z-Scheme charge transfer in MnO2/BiOBr heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic removal of antibiotics

Li Li,Mengru Wang,Wenjing Zhang,Xueli zhang,Han Li,Runqiang Liu,Chao Liu,Xingyun Hu

The removal of antibiotics from water remains a challenge, where adsorption as a pre-concentration step is crucial for subsequent photocatalytic degradation. Herein, we propose a synergistic strategy by constructing a heterojunction between the strong adsorbent MnO 2 and the photocatalyst BiOBr. A series of MnO 2 /BiOBr composites were synthesized via an in-situ redox method under an ice bath. The optimal 1% MnO 2 /BiOBr composite exhibited remarkably enhanced simultaneous adsorption and photocatalytic degradation efficiency towards ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR), and tetracycline (TC) under simulated sunlight, significantly outperforming pristine BiOBr and MnO 2 . Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the successful formation of an intimate heterojunction. Mechanistic studies, including active trapping species and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, revealed that the superoxide radical (•O 2 - ) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) were the dominant reactive species. The band structure alignment and charge transfer analysis supported a direct Z-scheme mechanism, which effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers while preserving high redox potentials. Furthermore, the effects of operational parameters (catalyst dosage, initial concentration, pH), inorganic anions, and natural organic matter (NOM) on CIP removal were systematically investigated, demonstrating good practicality. The degradation pathways of CIP were elucidated via LC-MS analysis, and toxicity assessment using T.E.S.T. software indicated a general reduction in the ecotoxicity of the intermediates. This work highlights MnO 2 as a multifunctional modifier and provides a feasible approach for designing efficient adsorbent-photocatalyst hybrids for antibiotic wastewater remediation.

Nb-induced intermediate species modulation on BiOBr for overcoming the rate-determining step in photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Han Lu,Deming Rao,Si-Min Xu,Sicong Sun,Yuanzhe Gao,Wei Dang,Ruikang Zhang

Nb-doped BiOBr photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile method. • Nb-BiOBr exhibits significantly enhanced CO selectivity and production rate. • Nb-induced impurity levels enhance light absorption and prolong carrier lifetimes. • Nb doping lowers the rate-determining barrier for CO 2 photoreduction on BiOBr. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction using water as a proton source offers a sustainable and promising route for renewable fuel production, yet its efficiency is limited by poor internal charge separation and sluggish surface reaction kinetics of photocatalysts. Bismuth oxybromide has attracted attention due to its favorable structure, but it suffers from rapid photo-generated charge recombination and low surface reactivity. In this work, Nb-doped BiOBr (Nb-BiOBr) nanosheets were successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method. The incorporation of Nb atoms into the BiOBr lattice introduces impurity energy levels within the band structure, which broadens visible-light absorption and prolongs the average lifetime of charge carriers. As a result, the optimized Nb-BiOBr achieves a high CO production rate of 20.68 μmol g –1 h −1 , which is 4.3 times that of the undoped BiOBr. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Nb doping effectively modulates the adsorption and evolution of reaction intermediate. The Gibbs free energy change (Δ G ) of the critical *CO 2 to *COOH conversion step is reduced from 0.89 eV to 0.54 eV (vs. SHE). This work demonstrates that the strategic metal doping can overcome kinetic limitations by tailoring intermediate adsorption, providing a viable design strategy for high-performance photocatalysts for CO 2 conversion. The introduction of Nb-induced impurity levels endowed the BiOBr photocatalyst with high CO selectivity and production rate in CO 2 photoreduction. S-scheme g-C3N4/BiOBr heterojunction with enhanced interfacial charge separation for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Long Bai,Yifei Chen,Xuedi Wu,Nan Chang,Ren Li,Zhi Yao,Weiping Li

In this study, a series of g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with varying BiOBr contents were synthesized via an in-situ hydrothermal strategy. The optimized composite, CB-15 (15 wt% BiOBr), exhibited a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 1925.9 μmol g −1  h −1 under visible light, significantly surpassing those of pristine g-C 3 N 4 and BiOBr. Comprehensive characterizations revealed enhanced light absorption, expanded surface area, improved surface wettability, interfacial coupling, and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) as confirmed by water contact angle, in situ XPS, and CV measurements. Photophysical analyses and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy provided further insights into the charge transfer mechanism, supporting the conclusion that g-C 3 N 4 and BiOBr form a direct S-type heterojunction structure. Density Functional Theory calculations validated this mechanism, revealing enhanced interfacial charge redistribution and a reduced Gibbs free energy barrier for hydrogen evolution. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance analysis showed the co-generation of •O 2 − and •OH radicals, aligning with the proposed S-scheme pathway. This work provides a comprehensive strategy for the rational design of high-performance photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen production.

Construction of BiIn2 quantum dots-modified BiOBr heterojunctions and their visible light-driven photocatalytic performance and mechanism

Bin Li,Xiaohang Huangpu,Hongli Zhou,Zhi Qi,Letian Cao,Chunyan Wang

Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr), as a typical layered visible light-responsive photocatalyst, has received widespread attention in the field of environmental pollutant degradation due to its suitable energy band structure and built-in electric field between layers. However, pure BiOBr still has key scientific problems such as limited visible light absorption range, fast photogenerated electron-hole recombination rate, and insufficient surface active sites, which seriously restrict its practical application. In order to solve the above bottleneck, this study used the solvothermal method for the first time to form BiIn 2 QDs/BiOBr composites by in-situ nucleation in an ethylene glycol reducing environment. The existence and chemical state of BiIn 2 QDs were confirmed by TEM and XPS. UV-Vis DRS shows that the absorption edge of BiIn 2 QDs/BiOBr composite is red-shifted from 409   nm to 417   nm, and the absorption intensity is enhanced. The quenching and peak broadening of the PL spectrum indicate that radiative recombination is significantly reduced. The transient SPV test shows that the BiOBr carrier lifetime is 0.43 μs, while the BiIn 2 QDs/BiOBr composite has no obvious attenuation and the lifetime is greater than 800 μs, confirming that the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers has been greatly improved. Steady-state SPV further observed a significantly enhanced photovoltage signal and a red shift of the photoelectric response spectrum. Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to study the degradation pathway of ciprofloxacin, showing that h + targets HOMO (piperazine N/aromatic ring, leading to pathway I), and •O 2 - targets LUMO (F/carboxylic acid, leading to pathway II). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further constructed a periodic model of BiIn 2 quantum dots modified BiOBr to study charge transfer characteristics, carrier spatial distribution and local bonding environment changes. This study shows that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), induced oxygen vacancies (OVs) and enhanced built-in electric field of BiIn 2 QDs work synergistically with the BiOBr layered structure to overall improve the photocatalytic efficiency of BiIn 2 QDs/BiOBr composites. This work provides new design ideas and theoretical basis for the development of efficient and stable bismuth-based heterojunction photocatalysts.

Morphology-controlled self-assembly of hollow spherical heterostructured TiO2@BiOBr promotes visible-light degradation of antibiotic pollutants

Juanrong Chen,Yue shen,Junjie Ma,Chaozhong Sun,Sai Zhang,Sisi Xiao,Yingguan Xiao,Shunsheng Cao

Although BiOBr exhibits a good photodegradation activity for organic pollutants due to its special layered structure, low visible-light utilization and insufficiently exposed active sites limit its photocatalytic efficiency. To address these challenges, we construct TiO 2 @BiOBr (HTBB) photocatalyst by coupling hollow spherical structure and p-n heterojunction. The strong built-in electric field can boost efficient charge separation, while hollow spherical structure not only can provide abundant accessible active sites due to its unique two-sided available interfaces, but also can promote light absorption through multiple reflection mechanism. As a result, the degradation rate of levofloxacin (LVFX) over HTBB photocatalyst is as high as 96.25 % under visible light within 1 h and still maintains a high level (>90 %) after five successive cycles. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic performance of HTBB shows excellent harsh environment tolerance. Therefore, this work provides a new insight for constructing BiOBr-based hollow spherical photocatalysts for the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

Facile synthesis of nitrogen-doped BiOBr nanoplates for degradation of florfenicol via a synergistic photocatalytic peroxydisulfate activation

Yuan Xu,Lu Tan,Weirui Chen,Xukai Li,Yiming Tang,Laisheng Li,Jing Wang

In this work, a series of 2D nitrogen-doped BiOBr (N-BOB) nanoplates were synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method, which was adopted for an integrated photocatalytic peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation under visible light. By virtue of the N doping that allows narrowed band gap, extended light response range and rapid separation of photo-carriers, N-BOB shows an FF degradation ratio up to 87.3 % in 1 h, surpassing that of the unmodified BiOBr (65.4 %). Furthermore, the generation of reactive oxygen species are facilitated due to the synergistic effect between photocatalysis and PDS activation, which are identified to be 1 O 2 , h + , •O 2 - , •OH and SO 4 • - , in which 1 O 2 , h + and •O 2 - play a major role.
