Organic salt induced electrospinning gradient effect: Achievement of BiVO4 nanotubes with promoted photocatalytic performance

Chade Lv,Jingxue Sun,Gang Chen,Yansong Zhou,Danying Li,Zukun Wang,Boran Zhao

Tubular nanostructure becomes the researchful focus in environmental purification because of its unique features, however, the hollow fibrous BiVO 4 , famous as an efficient photocatalyst for water purification and oxidation, has not been achieved yet. Here, we employ organic vanadium salt to fabricate BiVO 4 nanotubes by single-spinneret electrospinning without template. The organic salt can induce electrospinning gradient effect which plays a key role in the achievement of tubular nanostructure . Benefit from the unique structural properties of tubular nanostructure , BiVO 4 nanotubes possess hollow interior, leading to strong light harvesting ability and large surface areas. For photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI), these contributions from tubular nanostructure could promote the photocatalytic performance relative to solid BiVO 4 nanofibers. This organic salt induced electrospinning gradient effect is not subject to the usage amount, ratio and kind of as-employed salt, endowing the electrospinning method with bright vista for the fabrication of other materials with tubular nanostructure.

Coupling Photoelectrochemical and Peroxymonosulfate Activation on a CoWO4/BiVO4 Photoanode for Synergistic Ciprofloxacin Degradation

Yanhong Mo,Yueli Wang,Qinghong Zhou,Xiaoyong Jin,Yonglei Xing,Beibei Kou,Juan Peng,Gang Ni

A novel Z-scheme heterojunction photoanode, CoWO 4 /BiVO 4 , was synthesized by in situ growth of cobalt tungstate on 3D coral-like bismuth vanadate via a hydrothermal method. This photoanode was applied to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP) in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Material characterization confirmed the successful formation of the heterojunction, which broadened visible-light absorption and enhanced the separation of photogenerated charges through a built-in electric field. Under optimized conditions, the CoWO 4 /BiVO 4 photoanode degraded 82.6% of 20 ppm CIP within 30 min, exhibiting a kinetic rate constant approximately 7.1 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 , along with good stability and broad degradation capability. Mechanistic studies revealed that holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals ( • O 2 − ) were the dominant active species, while sulfate (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals contributed synergistically. This study provides a feasible strategy for designing efficient heterojunction-based PEC systems for wastewater treatment. Graphical The proposed Z‑scheme charge transfer mechanism and CIP degradation pathway over the CoWO 4 /BiVO 4 heterojunction under visible-light irradiation.

BiVO4 with surface Bi-vacancies enhanced photoelectrocatalytic polyethylene terephthalate oxidation and electrocatalytic nitrate reduction

Meichun Qin,Jingqi Qi,Zhiwei Qin,Zilong Wang,Sui Mao,Jianguo Tang

Bi vacancy efficiently improved charge transport and electron-hole pair separation of BiVO 4 . • Bi vacancy in BiVO 4 enhanced photoelectrocatalytic polyethylene terephthalate oxidation. • After coupling PETOR with NO 3 RR, the performance of PETOR was greatly improved. • The glycolic acid and formate yield was 6.02 mmol h −1 g −1 and 97.32 mmol h −1 g −1 , respectively. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is a promising photoanode material but suffers from severe charge recombination, resulting in unsatisfactory photoelectrocatalysis. Herein, we report the fabrication of a deep-eutectic solvent (DES)-treated BiVO 4 photoanode (BiVO 4 -DES-x) with bismuth vacancies (Bi vac ). The generation of Bi vac in BiVO 4 -DES-x efficiently improved the charge transport properties, electron–hole pair separation of BiVO 4 , and production of hydroxyl radical, boosting its photocatalytic activity and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) oxidation to form value-added glycolic acid (GA) and formate (FA). We designed a coupling system using photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of waste PET and nitrate (NO 3 − ) electrocatalytic reduction. Thus, BiVO 4 -DES-x functions as a photoanode and cathode. In the coupled reaction system, the GA yield rate increased from ∼ 4.20 mmol h −1 g −1 to 6.02 mmol h −1 g −1 and the Faradaic efficiency from ∼ 87.71% to 95.36%, while the FA yield rate was ∼ 97.32 mmol h −1 g −1 . This study provides an efficient solution for microplastic pollution and offers technical support for alleviating white pollution. Enhanced charge separation through oxygen vacancy-mediated anchoring of CoNi-ZIF on BiVO4 photoanodes

Yufeng Guan,Yuanyuan Zhang,Yaqi Zhang,Zeyuan Zhao,He Wang,Jiangang Jiang,Wenquan Zhou

Surface OVs act as robust atomic anchors to capture CoNi-ZIF on BiVO 4 . • Defect anchoring drives ∼4.0 e⁻ transfer for efficient charge separation. • Built-in electric field significantly lowers the OER activation energy barrier. • The engineered interface yields 4.16 mA cm⁻ 2 with an exceptional 97.6% stability. • This heterojunction achieves dual PEC water splitting and MB degradation. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is extensively investigated for solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications. However, its performance is largely limited by severe bulk charge recombination and sluggish surface reaction kinetics. In this work, a strategy combining defect engineering with in-situ self-assembly was developed to construct a planar photoanode, which integrates an oxygen-vacancy-rich BiVO 4 (OV-BVO) skeleton with a strongly coupled bimetallic CoNi-zeolitic imidazolate framework (CoNi-ZIF) cocatalyst layer. Experimental characterizations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the introduced oxygen vacancies (OVs) play dual critical roles. In the bulk, OVs induce V 4 ⁺ polaron states, significantly enhancing intrinsic conductivity and visible-light absorption. At the interface, OVs serve as atomic anchoring sites, inducing a substantial electron transfer of ∼4.0 e and generating a strong built-in electric field (maximum photovoltage of 418.1 mV). This efficiently drives photogenerated holes into the CoNi-ZIF layer, achieving a surface hole injection efficiency exceeding 80%. Consequently, the optimized OV-BVO/CoNi-ZIF photoanode delivers a photocurrent density of 4.16 mA cm⁻ 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (2.6 times that of Pure BVO) and maintains stable continuous operation without structural degradation. This study elucidates the defect-mediated charge transfer mechanism at the atomic scale, providing specific design strategies for advanced photoanodes in solar energy conversion. A 3D fishbone-like fluorinated BiVO4 as a reducing end to enhance photocatalytic activity

Zihan Yang,Yuqing Liu,Yida Wang,Xiaotong Sun,Yanzhi Zheng,Wanning Cao,Lixia Li,Liqin Wang,Hongli Zhao,Jingkai Yang

Photo-induced conversion of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has emerged as an effective means of removing persistent organic pollutants (POPs), but its key step of directed electron transfer from the active site to the stable O 2 molecule still possesses considerable challenges. In this work, we synthesized a novel 3D fishbone-like fluorinated BiVO 4 photocatalyst and explored the photocatalytic removal of dye-like species. The optimally fluorinated BiVO 4 with narrower band gap has an effective detoxification effect on MB and shows a degradation performance of 1.8 times higher than that of the original. Fluoride ions doped in the lattice and adsorbed on the surface lead to a slight increase of the electron density of BiVO 4 to elevate the conduction band potential and accelerate free radical activation. In addition, the degradation process of MB dye by F-BiVO 4 has been proposed. F-BiVO 4 material is proved as a promising reducing end of the F-BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction system.

Optimizing photoelectrocatalytic Efficiency: Synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate by CuFeO2/BiVO4 composites for antibiotic removal

Yonglei Xing,Jingyao Duan,Duomin Wang,Xiaoyong Jin,Xin Wang,Rui Yang,Gang Ni

The BiVO 4 photoanode and CuFeO 2 materials were synthesized via electrodeposition and hydrothermal methods, respectively, and the p-n type 2-CBVO (CuFeO 2 /BiVO 4 ) composite photoanode was prepared using a spin-coating technique. The degradation performance of the composite photoanodes was evaluated in a PEC-coupled PMS (peroxymonosulfate) activation system using levofloxacin (LVF) as the target pollutant. The 2-CBVO photoanode achieved a degradation efficiency of 78.8 % for LVF (15 ppm) within 30 min, representing a 45.1 % improvement over the BiVO 4 photoanode. The pseudo-first-order rate constant for the degradation of LVF was determined to be 4.43 × 10 −1 min −1 . Photoelectrochemical analysis confirmed that CuFeO 2 loading and PMS introduction enhanced photogenerated carrier separation, promoting LVF degradation. Radical trapping experiments indicated that h + , OH, SO 4 − and O 2 − were the primary reactive species in the degradation process. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results confirmed that the internal electric field at the composite interface directs from BiVO 4 to CuFeO 2 , facilitating electron transfer from CuFeO 2 to BiVO 4 and onward to the cathode surface via the external circuit. Cyclic stability tests demonstrated that the 2-CBVO composite photoanode retained 90.0 % of its activity after five cycles, indicating excellent stability and significant potential for water treatment applications.

Negative Bias Potential Derived n-Si/Pt/Mo: BiVO4 Tandem Photoanode for Water Splitting

Handuo Fu,Ke Fang,Shenhui Ma,Lin Wang,Yuyu Bu

In theory, the utilization of a Z-scheme photogenerated carrier transport system has the potential to significantly enhance the photogenerated voltage for photoelectrochemical overall water splitting. However, thus far, there have been no previous reports on such phenomena with silicon-based semiconductor photoelectrodes. In this study, we fabricated an n-Si/Pt/Mo-doped BiVO 4 (Mo: BVO) sandwich-like film with an intermediate carrier transfer layer to prepare a silicon-based photoelectrode with an indirect Z-scheme system. Additionally, by leveraging the lattice distortion effect over Mo: BVO, we increased the fusion ability of the sandwich-like interface between different substances. For the first time, we achieved generation of anodic displacement current via negative voltage (−0.57 V (vs. RHE)), resulting in a photocurrent density of 1.56 mA/cm 2 and a photogenerated voltage five times higher than that of the n-Si/Mo: BVO structure. Through combining experimental approaches with theoretical calculations, it has been confirmed that this realization is attributed to the contribution of the transport process within the Z-scheme system in the n-Si photoelectrode. Furthermore, milliampere-level photocurrent under negative bias was observed for the first time on an n-Si photoelectrode, providing a novel approach for constructing silicon-based photoelectrodes for overall water splitting.

Photocatalytic performance of BiVO4/RGO composite for degradation of Orange II under visible light

Mengyao Luo,Xue Sun,Tingting Jiao,Q. Guangzhou

A simple hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize BiVO 4 supported on reduced graphene oxide (BiVO 4 /RGO) composite photocatalyst to enhance photocatalytic activity of BiVO 4 for degradation of dye wastewater under visible light. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis DRS and photocurrent measurements. The photocatalytic performances of the BiVO 4 /RGO composite were evaluated by degradation of Orange II (AO7) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). A series of experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of various factors on removal efficiency of AO7. The results show that the BiVO 4 /RGO composite exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than pure BiVO 4 . The highest removal efficiency of AO7 was obtained, and reach 100% after 150 min when the doping content, pH value, catalyst dosage was GB30 (30 mg of GO corresponds to 1 mmol of BiVO 4 ), pH = 9 and 200 mg, respectively. The free radical trapping experiments show that • O 2 - played the most important role in the degradation of AO7. The enhanced catalytic activity of the BiVO 4 /RGO composite can be attributed to the RGO. As an electron acceptor and transporter, RGO can effectively promote charge transfer in composite and inhibit the recombination of photo-induced electron-hole pairs.

BiVO4 modifying with cobalt-phosphate cluster cocatalyst for persulfate assisted photoelectrocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Tingting Pan,Yiming Tang,Yuxin Liao,Jiacheng Chen,Yaping Li,Jing Wang,Laisheng Li,Xin Li

Tetracycline antibiotics pose a significant threat to environmental sustainability and human health due to their high concentration in water and soil beyond safety limits. In this study, we developed a BiVO 4 photoelectrode modified with cobalt-phosphate cocatalyst hybrid nanocomposites to degrade tetracycline efficiently. The crystal structures of the composites and the chemical valence of the ions were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocurrent generated from BiVO 4 /Co-Pi under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) was 1.99 mA/cm 2 , which was 10.5 times higher than that from pristine BiVO 4 film. The carriers’ dynamics were investigated by surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPV) and transient photovoltage spectroscopy (TPV). BiVO 4 /Co-Pi demonstrated a 62.6% degradation rate of tetracycline within 60 min, which increased to 95.3% after adding peroxomonosulfate (PMS). Co-Pi cocatalyst facilitated charge separation and acted as the hole acceptor, thereby improving the degradation activity. Based on electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, holes were identified as the dominant oxidizing species in the system. The activated Cobalt-phosphate cocatalyst along with the photogenerated-electrons facilitated the cobalt cycle process and generated sulfate radicals (•SO 4 − ) via PMS activation, leading to efficient tetracycline degradation.

Effective construction of Cu, S-CQDs/BiVO4 composites through a facile and efficient route

Huadong Liu,Hao Sun,Du Ke Zhen,Cheng Jing liang,Sun XiaoYu

Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (m-BiVO 4 ) is a well-known photocatalytic material. However, its poor charge transport and photogenerated electron hole rapid recombination limit the application of m-BiVO 4 . In this paper, we successfully constructed a novel copper-sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (Cu, S-CQDs)/BiVO 4 nanocomposite through a facile and efficient route, which significantly improved the photocatalytic performance of BiVO 4 . The physicochemical properties of Cu, S-CQDs and Cu, S-CQDs/BiVO 4 samples were studied by various characterization. It was concluded from the degradation experiments that the photocatalytic degradation rate of rhodamine B reaches 99% in 60 min under natural light. The degradation curve compounds the quasi-primary kinetic model, and the kinetic coefficient of degradation is 0.07831 min −1 , which is 5.37 times than that of pure BiVO 4 . Moreover, the free radical scavenging experiments reveal that the hole and superoxide radicals play a major role in the photocatalysis process. After four cycles, the activity of photocatalyst exhibits high stability, which is extremely important for the photocatalytic process. In the summery, the prepared Cu, S-CQDs/BiVO 4 has many advantages, such as environmental-friendly, low cost and a wide range of applications.

Peanut-Like Zn0.5Cd0.5S/BiVO4 S-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalysts Toward Optimized Visible Light Photocatalytic Performance

Yichao Wang,Zipeng Xing,Chunxu Wu,Meijie Liu,Jiapeng Gao,Na Zhang,Zhenzi Li,Haixia Liu,Wei Zhou

The development of heterojunction composite photocatalysts with sophisticated charge transfer mechanisms and interfaces is a promising approach to enhance photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, for the first time, a peanut-like Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/BiVO 4 S-scheme heterostructure visible-light composite photocatalyst via a two-step hydrothermal method is synthesized. S-scheme heterostructures, which can maintain the maximum redox capacity in the conduction and valence bands of the catalyst, have been established as an effective charge transfer mode in the field of photocatalysis. The Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/BiVO 4 heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits 99.52% degradation efficiency for tetracycline-based organic pollutants under visible light irradiation. In addition, the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of the composite catalyst is as high as 8969.58 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 69.24 and 4.35 times higher than that of single BiVO 4 and Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, respectively. Through density functional theory calculations and experimental studies, the material conformed to the charge transfer mode of the S-scheme heterojunction is determined. The improved photocatalytic efficiency can be attributed to the formation of S-scheme heterogeneous interface, which bends the energy band at the interfacial contact, and the formation of an internal electric field, which hinders rapid charge recombination and prolongs the lifetime of charge carriers.

CoP-loaded BiVO4 for highly active and robust photocathodic protection of 304 stainless steel

Xiao Zhang,Yuxiao Chu,Xianqiang Xiong,Qianmin Fan,Deman Han,Chenglin Wu

Despite the narrow band gap and the suitable band edge position, the BiVO 4 photoanode exhibits low metal anticorrosion performance due to inefficient charge separation and transfer. In this work, we introduce a CoP electrocatalyst with metal character on the BiVO 4 surface by cyclic voltammetry to address this challenge, which greatly enhances the electron injection efficiency into the protected metal. The modified BiVO 4 photoanode exhibits high solar water oxidation activity, resulting in a 123 mV cathodic shift on the self-corrosion potential of 304 stainless steel (304SS), enabling excellent metal protection. Additionally, the coupled composite photoanode shows high photo stability under light illumination, with only 8% decay on the open circuit potential after 51 h of photo-illumination. Our mechanism study shows that the CoP overlayer can act as the hole collector and electrocatalyst for water oxidation, and thus the BiVO 4 valence band holes are effectively transferred to the CoP and subsequently to water. Such an improvement inhibits the charge recombination increasing the electron lifetime, and thus realizing the effective protection of 304SS. The present work offers a rather simple process that allows the effective deposition of CoP electrocatalyst on BiVO 4 surfaces, which effectively protects metals from corrosion.
