Excitons competition regulation via organic cation-site and halogen-site co-halogenation of (X-p-PEA)2Pb(Cl/Br)4 perovskites

Linlin Ma,Chenyang Zhou,Haoyue Zhang,Yan Sun,Beibei Wang,Xia Feng,Ya Chu,Zibo Wu,Chao Wang,Guangjiu Zhao

In this work, we report a family of co-halogenated two-dimensional hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) based on phenethylammonium lead halogen ((PEA) 2 Pb(Cl/Br) 4 ) in which the organic cation-site (PEA) is substituted with halogen at the para-site, namely the formation of 4-halophenethylamine (X-p-PEA) (X = Cl, Br; p: para-site). The organic cations are regulated by introducing halogen ions at the para-site of the benzene ring to promote the structural distortion of the lead halide octahedral inorganic layer. Furthermore, (X-p-PEA) causes a shift in the energy band distribution of 2DHPs. In this case, the photoluminescence competition of free excitons (FEs) and self-trapped excitons (STEs) changes the microscopic relaxation process of excitons. In addition, we found that (Br-p-PEA) can increase the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). At the same time, we regulate the halogen-site of perovskites from lead-chloride perovskites (LCPs) to lead bromine perovskites (LBPs), achieving emission from white light to blue light. Therefore, the co-halogenation regulation strategy of organic cation-site and halogen-site can effectively regulate the photoluminescence wavelength and improve the PLQY. This is of great significance for the development of perovskite materials with specific optoelectronic applications.

Enhanced photocarrier separation in Br substitution-induced [W(VI)O6−x] units for highly efficient photocatalytic nitrate reduction under alkaline conditions

Xiao Li,Jin Chang,Hexin Zhang,Jing Feng,Jun Ma,Chengying Bai,Yueming Ren

Photocatalytic nitrate (NO 3 - ) reduction is considered a promising green and non-polluting technology to solve the nitrate pollution of groundwater and surface water. Herein, a novel Br-substituted Bi 2 WO 6−x ultrathin nanosheets were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method in a strong acid environment containing sixteen alkyl three methyl bromide (CTAB). The catalytic system solves the problems of low carrier separation efficiency, poor performance under alkaline conditions, and a hard-to-activate N = O bond, achieving efficient NO 3 - removal under alkaline conditions along with high N 2 selectivity . It was confirmed that Br-substituted Bi 2 WO 6−x produced the [W (VI) O 6−x ] units with a strong electron-withdrawing property by changing the polarity of the O-W-O bond. As a result, the effective space charge separation caused by the change of the W valence state and the spontaneous fracture behavior of the N = O bond improved the carriers utilization efficiency and distinctly reduced the reaction energy consumption, synergistically achieving excellent performance.

UV-induced degradation of contaminants of emerging concern in the presence of monobromoamine: Role of N-Br bond and degradation mechanisms

Jingxuan Yang,Dongxu Qu,Jue Wang,Yangtao Wu,Lingjun Bu,Yuanxi Huang,Shiqing Zhou

The N-Br bond in monobromoamine (NH 2 Br) can be cleaved by UV irradiation to generate Br • and subsequently HO • , resulting in an advanced oxidation condition (i.e., UV/NH 2 Br). This study investigated the degradation of six contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the UV/NH 2 Br process, including the phenolic hydrocarbons phenol and bisphenol A (BPA), the amines aniline and sulfadiazine (SDZ), and the persistent organic pollutants ibuprofen (IBP) and carbamazepine (CBZ). The results showed that UV/NH 2 Br process significantly improved the degradation of CECs following pseudo-first order kinetics, and the degradation of CECs was enhanced with the increase of NH 2 Br dosage. UV/NH 2 Br was more efficient in degrading CECs containing phenolic hydroxyl groups (100 %), followed by those containing amine groups (> 95 %). The degradation efficiency was influenced by the pH value and was highest at pH 7. It was found that low concentrations of Cl − (< 0.5 mM ) and HCO 3 − (< 0.5 mM) promoted the degradation of SDZ and IBP, but further increases in Cl − and HCO 3 − (0.5 ∼ 5.0 mM) resulted in inhibition. SDZ and IBP degradation was inhibited by photo absorption competition and free radical depletion in natural organic matter and actual water. Probe experiments showed that reactive bromine species (RBS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), and hydroxyl radical (HO • ) played a dominant role in CEC degradation. During the degradation of IBP by UV/NH 2 Br, hydroxylation, bromination , and quinylation were proposed as the primary reaction mechanisms. As compared to HOCl disinfection, NH 2 Cl disinfection after the UV/NH 2 Br process produced lower concentrations of disinfection by-products (DBPs).

Discriminative ionic capabilities on hydrogen-bond transition from the mode of ordinary water to (Mg, Ca, Sr)(Cl, Br)2 hydration

Hengxin Fang,Zhixu Tang,Xinjuan Liu,Yongli Huang,Chang Q. Sun

It has been a long pursuit to discriminate the ionic roles of mono- and di-valent salt solutions in modulating the hydrogen bonding network and solution properties. We attended this issue by examining the effect of concentrated YX 2 (Y Mg, Ca, Sr; X Cl, Br) solvation on O:H O bonds transition from the mode of ordinary water to hydration in terms of the number fraction f YX2 ( C ) and the segmental O:H O bond phonon stiffness shift Δω(C) with C being the solute concentration. The invariant df Y ( C ) /  dC at C ≤ <0.05 suggests that the small Y 2+ forms a constantly-sized hydration droplet with weak responding to interference of other ions because its hydrating H 2 O dipoles screen mostly its electric field. However, the number inadequacy of the highly-ordered hydrating H 2 O dipoles partially screens the large X − . The X −  ↔ X − electrostatic repulsion weakens its electric field. The concentration-trend consistency of the f YX2 ( C ), the solution conductivity σ YX2 ( C ), and surface stress (contact angle) θ YX2 ( C ) for YX 2 solutions clarifies their common origin of ionic polarization. However, the Jones–Dale notion disobedience of the viscosity η YX2 ( C ) suggests the dominance of the inter-ion repulsion.

The effect of halogen on BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I)/Bi2WO6 heterojunction for visible-light-driven photocatalytic benzyl alcohol selective oxidation

Fengjiao Wang,Yuyao Gu,Zhenya Yang,Yanyu Xie,Jiangjie Zhang,Xiaotong Shang,Huibo Zhao,Zizhong Zhang,Xuxu Wang

We developed a simple X − -assisted (X = Cl, Br, I) one-pot hydrothermal reaction to successfully synthesize a series of BiOX/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction. The effect of different halogens and their addition amount on the photocatalytic performance of BiOX/Bi 2 WO 6 composites was investigated using benzyl alcohol selective oxidation under visible-light irradiation. All BiOX could enhance the photocatalytic activity of Bi 2 WO 6 , but the BiOBr was the optimum for the maximum improvement of Bi 2 WO 6 . The match of energy band structure between BiOX and Bi 2 WO 6 resulted in the highly efficient separation of photogenerated charges, which was mainly attributed to their fundamental distinction of the photocatalytic activity. This work clarified the essential distinction in photocatalytic performance of the different halogen of BiOX/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction, and also provided guidance for the construction of efficient heterojunction photocatalysts.

In- situ solid-phase fabrication of Ag/AgX (X=Cl, Br, I)/g-C3N4 composites for enhanced visible-light hydrogen evolution

Chunpeng Bai,Jingce Bi,Junbiao Wu,Yan Xu,Sebastian Wohlrab,Yide Han,Xia Zhang

In this work, a series of Ag/AgX (X = Cl, Br, I)/g-C 3 N 4 (Ag/AgX/CN) composites were successfully fabricated by an in-situ solid phase method. The morphology and structure, photoluminescence and photoelectrochemical properties of composites were investigated in detail. The as-prepared Ag/AgX/CN composites were used as H 2 evolution photocatalysts under visible-light irradiation with a sacrificial agent . The experimental results revealed that Ag/AgI/CN-4 composite possesses highest-H 2 evolution rate (up to 59.22 μmol g −1  h −1 ) which are approximately 31 times higher than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 (1.94 μmol g −1  h −1 ). In addition, Ag/AgCl/CN-4 and Ag/AgBr/CN-4 composites also present high photocatalytic activities yielding, 26.39 and 18.05 μmol H2 g −1 h −1 , respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activities of Ag/AgI/CN-4 composite might be attributed to the synergistic effect between Ag/AgI nanoparticles and g-C 3 N 4 and the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic Ag. Moreover, Ag/AgI/CN-4 composite showed excellent recyclability and stability after five cycling photocatalytic tests (about 25 h). Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic mechanism of Ag/AgI/CN composites is proposed.

Full-Spectral Fine-Tuning Visible Emissions from Cation Hybrid Cs1–mFAmPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I, 0 ≤ m ≤ 1) Quantum Dots

Daqin Chen,Xiao Chen,Zhongyi Wan,Gaoliang Fang

Full-color visible emissions are particularly crucial for applications in displays and lightings. In this work, we developed a facile room-temperature ligand-assisted supersaturated recrystallization synthesis of monodisperse, cubic structure Cs1–mFAmPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I or their mixtures Cl/Br and Br/I, 0 ≤ m ≤ 1) hybrid perovskite quantum dots (QDs). Impressively, cation substitution of Cs+ by FA+ was beneficial in finely tuning the band gap and in exciton recombination kinetics, improving the structural stability, and raising the absolute quantum yields up to 85%. With further assistance of anion replacement, full-spectral visible emissions in the wavelength range of 450–750 nm; narrow full width at half-maxima, and a wide color gamut, encompassing 130% of National Television System Committee television color standard, were achieved. Finally, Cs1–mFAmPbX3-polymer films retaining multicolor luminescence are prepared and a prototype white light-emitting diode device was constructed using green Cs0.1FA0.9PbBr3 and red Cs0.1FA0.9Br1.5I1.5 QDs as color converters, certainly suggesting their potential applications in the optoelectronics field.

Crystal structure, thermal stability and photoelectric performance of the organic-inorganic hybrid material [(CH3CH2CH2)2NH2]aBibXc (X = Cl, Br and I)

Shuang Chen,Qiule Zhao,Yangchun Mo,Xiaopeng Wei,Jilin Wang,Guoyuan Zheng,Fei Long

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted wide attention because of their low cost, high photoelectric conversion efficiency and simple production process. Diisopropylamine was innovatively employed, in this paper, as the A-site organic ligand for bismuth-based halide organic-inorganic hybrid crystals. [(CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NH 2 ] a Bi b X c (X = Cl, Br and I) crystals were synthesized by a solvent evaporation method. All three crystals belong to the P2 1 /n space group. Among them, [(CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NH 2 ]BiBr 4 and [(CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NH 2 ]BiI 4 have one-dimensional chain structures, and [(CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NH 2 ] 2 Bi 2 Cl 8 belongs to a zero-dimensional structure. The band gap can be adjusted between 3.04 eV and 1.61 eV by the properties of halide ligands, and the good thermal stability of the three crystals are 203°C, 258°C and 291°C. Moreover, [(CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NH 2 ]BiI 4 thin films were prepared by the one-step solution spin-coating as a light absorbing layer. The band gap of thin films is 1.97 eV. The maximum power conversion efficiency of the device is 0.0271 %. Therefore, this organic-inorganic hybrid compound with a suitable band gap and high stability is expected to become a potential candidate material for photoelectric devices.

Effect of B2O3/SiO2 ratio on photoluminescence properties and stability of red-emitting CsPb(Br/I)3 borosilicate quantum dots glass

Keyi Gu,Yongmin Duan,Shugang Li,Ying Tian,Juan Du,Junjie Zhang

In recent years, inorganic perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have garnered significant attention, but the photoluminescence (PL) properties and stability of red-emitting PQDs need to be further enhanced. In this work, the precipitation of CsPb(Br/I) 3 quantum dots into borosilicate glass was effectively enabled by the high-temperature melt-quenching method. With the B 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio increased, the glass network structure gradually loosened, which enhanced the precipitation of PQDs. Simultaneously, the PL intensity of CsPb(Br/I) 3 PQDs glass increased, with a near twentyfold rise in the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). The variable temperature test of PQDs glass shows that PQDs glass has good thermal stability. Finally, a red-emitting LED and a WLED were prepared by using the prepared red-emitting CsPb(Br/I) 3 PQDs glass. This paper serves as a reference for incorporating red-emitting CsPb(Br/I) 3 PQDs glass into WLED development.

Non-metallic surface-modified X-Cu (X = F, Cl, Br) metal catalysts for all-pH hydrogen evolution reaction with high performance

Yao Tang,Chunyan Fan,Zehao Zang,Yahui Cheng,Lanlan Li,Xiaofei Yu,Xiaojing Yang,Zunming Lu,Xinghua Zhang,Hui Liu

Producing hydrogen through water electrolysis represents a clean and sustainable solution that is crucial in addressing the energy crisis. Nonetheless, the slow process of water electrolysis leads to large different kinetics for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under different pH solutions. Here, we designed surface modified metallic X-Cu catalysts (X = F, Cl, Br) with different non-metallic elements on nickel foam (NF) using an electrochemical deposition method, which realizes high performance for all-pH range. In 1.0 M KOH, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 media, F-Cu catalyst reaches 10 mA cm −2 with overpotentials of 56 mV, 110 mV, and 197 mV, respectively. Theoretical calculations disclose that the surface modification of F atom leads to redistribution of electrons, causing an upward shift of Cu’s d-band center and enhanced adsorption ability for H 2 O and H intermediates (H*). This work offers novel perspectives for designing Cu-based catalysts with high HER performance, making them applicable across all-pH conditions.

Unveiling distinct influencing mechanisms of Br- on NDMA formation during ozonation of actual water Matrixes: Identification of precursors and brominated substance

Menglan Gao,Xiaobin Liao,Shuting Chen,Xiaoying Li,Yirou Zhang,Chao Chen,Huan Qi

Bromide ion (Br - ) in water sources has been found to affect the formation of carcinogenic non-brominated N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) during ozonation of typical amines. The increasing bromide levels bring more concern due to climate change and industrial discharge, but its effects on actual water matrixes were still unclear. In this study, NDMA formation from three actual water matrixes during ozonation as the Br - concentration increased from 0 to 100 µM were investigated (promotion (100.4 ∼ 231.6 ng/L), promotion then inhibition (399.5 ∼ 461.2 ∼ 428.2 ng/L), and subtle influence (51.9 ± 6.9 ng/L)); from which the NDMA precursors were screened and 8 precursors were selected for exploring the influencing mechanisms. The results indicated that the roles of Br - on NDMA formation significantly depended on the water characteristics of actual matrixes. A total of 16 typical NDMA precursors, which were mainly derived from industrial, agricultural and pharmaceutical sources, were identified. Moreover, 6 brominated substance (Br-DMA, Br-UDMH, Br-DMSC, Br-DMS, Br-TMDS, Br 2 -TMDS), which were thought to play a crucial role in promoting NDMA formation, were also identified in actual water by precursor ion scan (PIS) method. Hypobromous acid (HOBr), which has been proved to be the culprit to the generation of brominated substances, tend to attack the electron-donating groups of amines, such as acylamino (–NHCO-R) or amidogen (–NH 2 ) groups. However, the reactive bromine species (∙Br and ∙Br 2 - ) was inclined to attack the aromatic and anti-oxidant moieties then result in Br - release, as no bromine substitution but free radical transfer reaction occurs. Therefore, decreasing HOBr formation is the crucial step to reduce NDMA generation. This work would provide technical guide for NDMA risks control during ozonation of Br - -amines co-containing water matrixes.

W/Br co-doped Zn(O,S) with Zn/O bi-vacancy defects and heterovalent states for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Binghong Wu,Xinru Wu,Dong-Hau Kuo,Xiao Tang,Xin Mao,Baoqian Yang,Zhengjie Su,Pengkun Zhang,Longyan Chen,Minhao Liu,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

To reveal the role of bi-vacancy defects and heterovalent states in oxysulfide catalysts for enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PHER), we demonstrate a Br/W co-doped Zn(O,S) catalyst (labeled as Br/W-ZnOS) featuring abundant anionic oxygen vacancies (V O )/cationic zinc vacancies (V Zn ) bi-defects and heterovalent W 5+ /W 6+ states via a facile hydrolysis method. The co-doping of Br and W induces lattice distortions that enable neighboring atoms to leave the lattice, creating surfaces enriched with anionic V O and cationic V Zn defects. The synergistic effect between dual defects forms an efficient electron-hole separation system, enhancing the efficiency of electron-hole pair separation. Density functional theory calculation (DFT) demonstrates that the combination of Br/W co-doping and vacancies significantly reduces the water dissociation barrier and optimizes the surface ∗H generation rate of the photocatalyst. Thus, Br/W-ZnOS exhibits a PHER rate of 3415.7 μmol h −1 , which is 12.5 times higher than the undoped Zn(O,S) catalyst, and achieves an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 15.41 % at 365 nm, while maintaining good stability with a PHER activity of 3288.1 μmol h −1 after five repeated cycles. This research provides a promising strategy for designing oxysulfide catalysts with synergistically engineered defects for efficient PHER.
