Storing and hydrogenating CO2 to CH4 is an efficient solution to alleviate the greenhouse effect and energy shortage. This work demonstrated that the CaO-captured CO2 could be selectively converted to CH4 by Ni- and hydrogen-assisted calcium looping (CaL) processes in a batch reactor. The Ni/CaO composite was first synthesized in one step at room temperature by calcium-induced hydrogenation of Ni-mixed calcium carbonate without the use of any solvent and CO2 emission. The CO2 capture properties over the Ni/CaO composite and the methanation properties of the Ni/CaCO3 composite produced after CO2 capture were then studied in a batch reactor. It was proved that the CO2 capture properties of CaO can be improved, the CaO recovering temperature can be significantly lowered, and valuable CH4 can be selectively produced by Ni- and hydrogen-assisted calcium looping processes at moderate/high temperature. The 68.58% methane yield and 100% methane selectivity were achieved under relatively mild conditions. After five Ni- and hydrogen-assisted CaL processes, the methane yield still reaches 45%. This study offers a novel energy-saving CaL process, which can be utilized for facile and selective conversion of the CaO-captured CO2 to CH4.

CaCO3/CaO materials possess the advantages of low cost, high energy storage density, and working temperature, which offer these materials the potential to be used in thermochemical energy storage systems for concentrated solar power plants. However, CaCO3/CaO materials possess poor antisintering and optical absorption abilities, largely limiting their practicability for direct solar utilization. In this study, binary ion doping of Fe/Mn and Zr-based stabilizer incorporation were simultaneously conducted to improve the cyclic thermal energy storage/release performance of CaCO3/CaO materials. The spectral absorbance of synthetic CaO-based composites (ranging from 77.8% to 84.0%) doped with binary ions of Fe/Mn is greatly increased in comparison to that of pure CaO (∼12.2%) due to the generation of black Ca2Fe2O5 and Ca4Mn3O10. The cyclic thermal energy storage/release performances of synthetic CaO-based composites were comparatively investigated under two thermal energy storage modes (CSP-N2 and CSP-CO2). The Zr-doped, CaO-based composites exhibit a cycling stability superior to those of Zr-free CaO-based composites due to the generated inert CaZrO3 with desirable antisintering ability, and the superiority is more prominent under CSP-CO2 mode. After 50 cycles, the CaO-based composite with a molar ratio of Ca:Zr = 100:6.7 exhibits a remarkably stable energy release density of 1.02 MJ/kg under CSP-CO2 mode, retaining 88.9% of its initial energy release density.

Textile dyeing sludge (TDS) is a typical industrial solid waste whose amount surged with the textile industry's development. Pyrolysis treatment is a promising technique for TDS to realize harmless disposal and resource reuse. However, the high content of organic compounds would cause sulfurous pollutants emission, reducing the economic feasibility during pyrolysis. This study aimed to fill the knowledge gaps about the thermal behavior, products distribution, kinetics, and sulfur transformation during TDS pyrolysis in 350–575 ℃ with the heating rate of 60, 600, and 6000 ℃/min, then investigate the sulfur fixation effect of CaO under representative conditions (350 ℃, 650 ℃ with 60 ℃/min, 6000 ℃/min). The primary decomposition stage of TDS is observed in 127–557 ℃, following the Avrami-Erofeev (n = 3) model, while the activation energy presents a convergent tendency with the increased heating rate. The pyrolysis temperature and heating rates impact the cracking of organic compounds, while a weakening effect is found for the sulfur distribution. CaO addition could efficiently realize sulfur fixation in char by absorbing sulfurous gas products, but SO 2 escape appeared with the increased CaO fraction. Pyrolysis condition at 650 ℃-60 ℃/min with 10 wt% CaO addition is recommended to achieve high sulfur retention, and the sulfur transformation mechanism in char during the TDS pyrolysis with and without CaO is proposed. Our findings provide novel and fundamental insights into the efficient disposal and pollution control during TDS pyrolysis.

Glycerol can be converted to allyl alcohol via deoxydehydration using molybdenum-vanadium, rhenium and iron based catalysts. However, the dehydration causes severe coking at strong acid sites on the surface of catalyst. Molybdenum-vanadium oxide supported on calcium oxide-intercalated montmorillonite (MoV-CaMMT) was prepared by oxalate anion intercalation followed by impregnation. MoV-CaMMT displayed the best catalytic performance of 86.5% glycerol conversion and good stability in 5 h. Correlating the results of XRD, XPS and TG analysis, it can be demonstrated that the addition of CaO in the catalyst preparation is conducive to the crystallization and dispersion of vanadium oxides, and reduces the acid strength, while the presence of a few vanadium dioxide and the stable conversion of V 4+ and V 5+ are the reasons for enhancing coking-resistance of MoV-CaMMT. Additionally, NH 3 -TPD analysis proved the coexistence of weak and strong acid sites in MoVO x , which are conducive to the formation of acetol.

Calcium Looping (CaL) is a noteworthy high-temperature thermochemical energy storage technology applied in the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), given its considerable theoretical heat storage density and the low-cost raw materials. The inherent poor solar absorptance to CaO-based materials, however, limit their use in volumetric collectors that operate in direct solar-driven heat storage mode. This research implements a collaborative strategy of external Mn-doping and internal Al-loading to fabricate CaO-based composite pellets using a hydrophobic-assisted casting method. The fabricated pellets, featuring a “black exterior, white interior” design, achieve both good light absorption and stable heat storage/release capabilities. The findings reveal that incorporating a hydrophobic layer with 60 wt% MnO 2 is advantageous for preserving the structural integrity of the Mn-based outer shell and for the elevation of its optical absorption capability. Therefore, the solar absorbance of the proposed Al-stabilized CaO-based composite pellets with a dark Mn-based shell is 86.39 %, and their compressive strength is 9.38 MPa, which is notably higher than the shell-free pure CaO-based pellets (19.36 %, 0.6 MPa). Moreover, after 40 cycles, the energy storage density of the preferred CaO-based composite pellets has increased by 44.3 % compared to the initial cycle, achieving 1.07 MJ/kg. The desirable “self-reactivation” phenomenon is primarily attributed to the synergistic co-evolution of the outward soft skeleton and the inward hard skeleton within the CaO-based composite pellets, which helps maintain a stable pore structure and accelerates the carbonation rate during high-temperature cycles.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) contains various valuable metals, making it a potential secondary resource for sustainable metal usage. Pyrometallurgical smelting is an efficient technique to recycle WEEE by extracting precious metals into copper matte and removing impurities into slags. The impact of WEEE impurities such as CaO and Al2O3on the phase compositions of the smelting products attracts great attention for industrial metal recovery. This study clarified the impact of CaO and Al2O3on the equilibrium phase compositions of copper matte and SiO2-saturated FeOx-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO slags. The high-temperature smelting experiments were taken at a controlled p(SO2) of 0.1 atm and 1300 °C, followed by quenching and electron probe microanalysis. The results showed that the copper and sulfur in the smelting system were highly deported into copper matte, and their distribution in matte was enhanced by increasing CaO and Al2O3concentrations introduced by WEEE. The chemical copper dissolution in slags increased with increasing matte grade but decreased by adding CaO and Al2O3. The iron was preferentially concentrated in slags, and higher matte grades improved the iron distribution in slags. The current experimental results enrich fundamental thermodynamic data and help optimize WEEE smelting operations for efficient recovery of valuable metals.

This study focused on the effect of oxygen (0–15 %) and 5 % CaO addition on the organic-S control and transformation behavior during pyrolysis (400–600 °C) of sludge under the conditions relevant to smoldering combustion. The results show that oxygen inhibits the total emission of gaseous sulfur (decreased by 25.6–36.9 %). At low temperatures (<500 °C), oxygen enhances the oxidation of aliphatic-S, aromatic-S/thiophene-S, and sulfide-S, leading more sulfur retains in the form of sulfone-S and sulfate-S in char products, also migrates to water-soluble products (especially sulfone-S). At high temperatures (>500 °C), the formed sulfur species in char products mainly further decompose into water-soluble sulfone-S, and partially generate SO 2 . After the addition of CaO during oxidative pyrolysis, the synergistic promotion effect on the sulfur fixation in char products is found, mainly due to the generation of more amount of stable sulfone-S and sulfate-S in char products. This leads to a decrease in gaseous sulfur by 12.4–14.6 % and an increase in sulfur content of char products by 31.3–202.9 %.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) severely threatens the service of metal materials, and traditional purely passive barrier coatings fail to withstand the continuous attack of biofilms. Herein, a ternary composite material (LDH-ZIF@CaO₂) composed of CoAl-LDH, ZIF-67, and CaO 2 was synthesized and incorporated into epoxy resin to construct an anti-corrosion coating that integrates active antibacterial and anti-corrosion properties. The study reveals that this composite possesses typical microenvironment responsiveness: in the acidic environment generated by microorganism metabolism, the Co ions released from the system can catalyze H₂O₂ (produced by CaO₂ hydrolysis) to undergo a Fenton-like reaction, generating highly oxidizing hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂). This achieves highly efficient eradication of SRB and biofilm detachment. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests indicate that when the CaO₂ loading is 200 mg, the coating exhibits the optimal anti-corrosion performance, maintaining high compactness and high impedance characteristics even after 30 d of immersion, the impedance value is 10 8 Ω cm 2 , which is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of epoxy resin systems. Furthermore, this paper thoroughly elucidates that the excessive addition of CaO₂ (400 mg) leads to filler agglomeration, internal gas pressure, and oxidative degradation of the resin matrix caused by excessive free radicals, which conversely accelerates coating failure. This study provides a new theoretical basis and strategy for designing microenvironment-responsive, anti-MIC coatings.

With the increasing use of high-alumina iron ores in blast furnace ironmaking, the Al 2 O 3 content in the slags has gradually risen to 15 to 20 wt pct, significantly affecting the phase equilibria and flow properties of the slag system. In this study, the phase equilibria in the CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 quaternary system with a fixed Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 mass ratio of 0.5 (representative of typical high-Al 2 O 3 blast furnace slags) were systematically investigated using high-temperature equilibration and quenching experiments combined with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). A pseudo-ternary phase diagram CaO–MgO–(SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) was constructed. At a fixed (SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) content of 55 wt pct, the minimum liquidus temperatures for slags with Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 = 0.5 occur at MgO/CaO ≈ 0.4 (1360 °C), respectively, and the liquidus temperature of the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 = 0.4 slag is consistently lower than that of the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 = 0.5 slag over the entire MgO/CaO range studied. At fixed MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.2 and 0.15, the liquidus temperature first decreases and then increases with increasing quaternary basicity (defined as (CaO+MgO)/(SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) by mass). In the conventional basicity range of blast furnace slag (0.95 to 1.05), the liquidus temperature ranges from 1400 °C to 1500 °C, and the high-alumina slag always exhibits a higher liquidus temperature than the ordinary slag. Significant deviations exceeding 50 °C were observed between the experimental liquidus temperatures and the phase equilibria calculated using the FactSage 8.4 thermodynamic database for high‑alumina blast furnace slags. The compositional characteristics of the melilite solid solution were also analyzed using EPMA‑derived compositional data. Strong linear correlations among Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and MgO in melilite confirm the isomorphous substitution mechanism. When the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio in the liquid phase is below 0.5, the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio in melilite increases sharply with increasing liquid ratio; when the liquid ratio exceeds 0.5, the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio in melilite stabilizes within a narrow range of 1.4 to 1.6, indicating that the incorporation of Al 3 ⁺ in the melilite structure approaches an apparent solubility limit.

Calcium-based adsorbents hold great promise for large-scale CO 2 capture. However, CaO pellets suffer fragmentation when stored in moist air, limiting their application. Numerous studies demonstrate that the presence of water significantly affects the structural integrity of adsorbent pellets. However, most of these studies focus on high-temperature conditions, while limited attention to moist air conditions. This study investigated the effect of different hydration pathways on the structural integrity of CaO pellets and revealed the fragmentation mechanism under moist air. Multiscale characterizations showed that CaO pellets exposed to moist air or liquid water underwent severe fragmentation, primarily caused by liquid-water hydration reactions. FT-IR and TGA results confirmed the presence of residual water in the fragmented pellets, while Rietveld refinement showed a significant drop in crystallinity and rise in microstrain. These changes compromised the structural integrity of pellets. In contrast, the pellets undergoing high-temperature steam hydration retained structural integrity, showing high crystallinity and low microstrain. Based on this, a hydrothermal shell-core strategy was proposed to enhance the anti-fragmentation performance of CaO pellets. A dense Ca(OH) 2 shell formed via high-temperature steam hydration isolated the CaO core from moist air, significantly enhancing structural integrity. Pellets with over 60 % hydration conversion retained 74.07 % structural integrity after 48 h of exposure to moist air (30 °C and 85 % RH), three times higher than unhydrated pellets, while CO 2 capture capacity of the revised pellets surpassed 0.6 g CO 2 /g adsorbent. These findings provide both mechanistic basis and design strategy for the production, transportation, and storage of calcium-based adsorbent pellets in moist environments.

CaO/CaCO 3 thermochemical heat storage has been considered as a competitive technology in concentrated solar power plants. Carbide slag and red mud are solid wastes from the chlor-alkali industry and aluminum industry, respectively. In this work, the red mud/Mn co-doped high alumina cement-stabilized carbide slag was synthesized for CaO/CaCO 3 heat storage. The effects of the addition of high alumina cement and red mud/Mn on the heat storage capacity, cyclic stability, and optical absorption of the modified carbide slag were investigated. The modified carbide slag exhibits excellent heat storage capacity and optical absorption. The Ca 3 Al 2 O 6 and CaMnO 3 inhibit the growth of CaO grains. FeMnO 3 and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 possess high optical absorption properties . The additions of Mn and red mud enhance the heat storage rate and basicity of the carbide slag. The effective conversion of the modified carbide slag is 0.62 after 30 cycles, which is 3.1 times as high as that of the untreated carbide slag. The modified carbide slag reaches the optical absorptance of ~58%, which is 6.5 times as high as that of the untreated one. Thus, the red mud/Mn co-doped high alumina cement-stabilized carbide slag is a potential candidate for the CaO/CaCO 3 heat storage system .

Solar-powered pyrolysis of waste tires has been extensively studied because it can rapidly convert waste tires into valuable gas products using sustainable energy. However, the emitted sulfurous pollutants during this fast pyrolysis process would significantly reduce the economic feasibility of disposal waste tires. In order to investigate and regulate the sulfur transformation behavior, a large-load thermogravimetric analyzer and an optical rapid thermal processor were adopted to characterize and simulate the solar-powered fast pyrolysis behavior. The sulfur fixation effect of CaO was also evaluated in this study. Results showed that CaO addition could increase the emission of H 2 and CO by promoting the cracking of organic compounds in tar. In comparison, it could decrease the CO 2 emission by adsorption or transformation. Also, an excellent sulfur fixation rate in char was achieved with 10 wt% CaO addition, but accompanied by increasing emission tendency of SO 2 , especially at 650 °C-6000 °C/min. It was attributed to the competition reaction between H 2 S and SO 2 in the gas phase and interaction between CaS and CaSO 4 in the condensed phase. Our findings could be beneficial to develop an in-situ sulfur removal method during the pyrolysis of waste tires in the industry.
