Tunable catalytic properties of multi-metal–organic frameworks for aerobic styrene oxidation

Yanghe Fu,Lai Xu,Huanmei Shen,Huan Yang,Fumin Zhang,Weidong Zhu,Maohong Fan

The Cu and Co mixed metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MOF-74(Cu/Co) with different Cu/Co ratios were prepared via a facile one-pot synthesis method and then characterized by means of various techniques. Whatever the Cu/Co ratios in the synthesized MOFs were, both Cu 2+ and Co 2+ could be uniformly distributed in MOF-74. The synthesized MOF-74(Cu/Co) materials were used as catalysts in styrene oxidation with O 2 under solvent-free and mild reaction conditions. The results show that the catalytic properties of MOF-74(Cu/Co) can be tuned by varying the Cu/Co ratio in MOF-74. MOF-74(Cu) has a rather low catalytic activity but an absolute selectivity for benzaldehyde while MOF-74(Co) possesses a relatively higher catalytic activity, leading to the formation of benzaldehyde, styrene epoxide, and phenylacetaldehyde as well as to polystyrene. It is surprising that the incorporation of Cu 2+ in MOF-74(Co) can completely inhibit the polymerization of styrene while the incorporation of Co 2+ in MOF-74(Cu) can significantly enhance the conversion of styrene to benzaldehyde, styrene epoxide, and phenylacetaldehyde. In addition, by increasing the Co 2+ amount in MOF-74(Cu/Co), the conversion of styrene and the selectivity for styrene epoxide and phenylacetaldehyde are increased while the selectivity for benzaldehyde is decreased. Moreover, the catalytic properties of MOF-74(Cu/Co) were compared with those of the physical mixtures of MOF-74(Cu) and MOF-74(Co), demonstrating the synergetic effects of Co 2+ and Cu 2+ in MOF-74(Cu/Co) on the catalytic oxidation of styrene. The current work reveals a strategy to incorporate multiple metal cations into MOFs for enhancing a specific catalytic property or achieving a new catalytic property.

Self-assembly of Pd Nanoparticles on Anatase Titanium Dioxide and Their Application in Formic Acid Fuel Cells

Qizhi Dong,Tianwu Yin,Hansheng Wan,Guiming Zhu,Gang Yu,Cancheng Guo

Based on electrostatic self-assembly technology, Pd electrocatalyst with high efficiency and excellent CO-tolerance, which is supported on TiO 2 surface modified by amino-rich, cationic poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), was prepared. Through electrostatic interaction, Pd precursors were uniformly distributed on TiO 2 (P) and then in situ reduced into Pd nanoparticles (NPs). in such process, PDDA produced a large number of amine to facilitate the uniform distribution of Pd NPs on the surface of TiO 2 . After that,Pd/TiO 2 (P) was mixed with carbon black as anodic catalysts for formic acid oxidation reaction. Transmission electron microscope images and X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that Pd NPs with an average size of ∼3 nm were uniformly dispersed on TiO 2 . Moreover, with the application of cyclovoltammetry and chronoamperometry, we demonstrated the significant enhancement in the electrocatalytic activity and the tolerance toward CO poisoning when compared with Pd/TiO 2 -C for direct formic acid fuel cells.

Tuning Pt–Cu nanostructures by bromide ions and their superior electrocatalytic activities for methanol oxidation reaction

Sui Ning,Wang Ke,Bai Qiang,Wang Lina,Wang Tao,Xiao Hailian,Liu Manhong,Colvin Vicki L.,Zhang Qingbo,Yu William W.

Dendritic Pt–Cu nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile one-step method with the help of surfactant Brij58 at room temperature, and we also studied the effects of different Pt–Cu ratios on the morphology and size of nanoparticles. In addition, we further tuned the morphology of the Pt–Cu nanostructures by introducing bromide ions, eventually leading to the appearance of some tripod-like structures. Compared with dendritic Pt–Cu and commercial Pt black, these tripod-like Pt–Cu nanostructures exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity and CO tolerance for catalyzing methanol oxidation. ᅟ

Design the PdCu/Ni2P electrocatalyst with high efficiency for ethanol oxidation reaction in alkaline media

Yanxin Bai,Xiang Gong,Na Ye,Xiaoying Qi,Zhao Jiang,Tao Fang

To facilitate the electrocatalytic behavior of Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells (DEFCs), a sequence of bimetallic Pd x Cu y /Ni 2 P-C catalysts are synthesized via the microwave-assisted ethylene glycol reduction method. The results indicate that our designed Pd 2 Cu/Ni 2 P-C(1:1) catalyst owns high activity (3974.08 mA mg −1 Pd ), 8.3 times higher than the commercial Pd/C. The durability and the CO tolerance of the corresponding catalysts are also investigated by chronoamperometry (CA) and CO stripping measurements, implying Pd 2 Cu/Ni 2 P-C(1:1) shows good durability and the anti-CO poisoning ability for EOR in alkaline media . The electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) analysis reveals lower charge transfer resistance for Pd 2 Cu/Ni 2 P-C(1:1). Combined with the results of XRD , HRTEM , XPS and electrochemical measurements, we found that the good electrocatalytic activity , CO tolerance and long-term durability of Pd 2 Cu/Ni 2 P-C(1:1) may be provided by the electronic and strain effect among Pd, Cu and Ni 2 P, which will bring the downshift in the d-band center of catalysts and the weakened adsorption of intermediates.

Fe-Co-Co prussian blue analogues as a novel co-reaction accelerator for ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescent biosensor construction

Qian Wu,Peijin Wang,Xue Yang,Min Wei,Mao Zhou,Yuxin Pu,Mingxiao Zhang

An ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was constructed by using Fe y Co 3-y [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 prussian blue analogues (Fe-Co-Co PBAs) as a novel electrochemically regenerable co-reaction accelerator for methotrexate (MTX) detection. In this work, we synthesized the core-shell Fe-Co-Co [email protected] 3 N 4 tags with luminophores and co-reaction accelerators via a facile and green method. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that Fe-Co-Co PBAs was used as an efficient co-reaction accelerator of the carboxylated graphene-like carbon nitride /peroxydisulfate (C-g-C 3 N 4 /S 2 O 8 2− ) ECL system for signal amplification. In view of the prominent quenching effect of MTX on the ECL response of the C-g-C 3 N 4 , the proposed ECL biosensor exhibited high sensitivity to quantify the concentration of MTX from 5 pM to 10 μM with a detection limit of 1.1 pM. Simultaneously, the biosensor has also been successfully applied to MTX detection in human serum and urine samples with reasonable recoveries. Hence, the proposed method holds a new perspective of PBAs nanomaterials in biosensing and provides a potential analysis method for the rapid detection of MTX in biological systems.

Enhanced photocatalytic CO2 conversion of a CdS/Co-BDC nanocomposite via Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycling

Ruina Xuan,Jieqiong Mo,Jiwen Chen,Yixin Dou,Xiaofang Li,Zhuo jiang,Bo Chai,Chunlei Wang,Deng Ding,Juntao Yan,Xiaobo Wang

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into value-added chemical fuels using sunlight as the energy input has been a thorny, challenging and long-term project in the environment/energy fields because of to its low efficiency. Herein, a series of CdS/Co-BDC composite photocatalysts were constructed by incorporating CdS nanoparticles into Co-BDC using a dual-solvent in situ growth strategy for improving photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency. The composites were characterized through XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, DRS and EPR techniques in detail. 18% CdS/Co-BDC composites showed superior performance for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO, which was 8.9 and 19.6 times higher than that showed by the pure CdS and Co-BDC, respectively. The mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance was analyzed. The CdS/Co-BDC composites showed better adsorption for CO2. Detailed analysis of XPS, transient photocurrent responses, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows the existence of strong charge interaction between CdS and Co-BDC and the photo-electrons of CdS can be transferred to Co-BDC. Additionally, Co-oxo of Co-BDC plays the role of a redox-active site and promotes the reduction performance via the method of valence transition of Co(II)/Co(III) redox.

Synergy of metallic Co and Co-N species in highly dispersed Co based catalyst for enhanced nitroarene hydrogenation

Jing Li,Xiaorui Yan,Yujing Ren,Tiantian Liu,Kairui Li,Haisheng Wei

Design of metal Co-based catalysts by different strategies has aroused many attentions in the chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to improve their catalytic performance. Herein, Co(6)-N-C catalyst with highly dispersed metal Co and Co-N species was synthesized by the assistance of formed Zn species, which exhibits better performance than single atom Co catalyst in the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene, in which the increasing of hydrogenation activity is usually accompanied by unsatisfactory selectivity. In this work, Co(6)-N-C catalyst obtains 98.5 % conversion and > 99 % selectivity of 3-vinylaniline, as well as excellent cyclic stability and desirable substrate universality for the hydrogenation of other substituted nitroarenes. It is demonstrated that the good performance is ascribed to the synergy of metallic Co and Co-N species in the Co(6)-N-C catalyst, improving the activity and selectivity. This work provides a novel strategy to construct an efficient Co-based catalyst for enhanced hydrogenation performance.

Intermediate enrichment effect of porous Cu catalyst for CO2 electroreduction to C2 fuels

Bao Liu,Chao Cai,Baopeng Yang,Kejun Chen,Yan Long,Qiyou Wang,Shuandi Wang,Guozhu Chen,Hongmei Li,Junhua Hu,Junwei Fu,Min Liu

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to obtain C2/multi-carbon fuels is an appealing technology to reduce carbon emission and store intermittent renewable electricity. The C–C coupling process, as the most critical step for generating C2/multi-carbon fuels, strongly depends on the concentration of *CO intermediates around the active sites. In this work, we prepared porous copper nanospheres (P-Cu) that greatly improved the C–C coupling process by enriching *CO intermediates in the pore structure . The specific pore features of P-Cu were characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption tests. Obviously, the P-Cu exhibits higher specific surface area and richer pore structure than the control sample compact copper nanosphere (C-Cu). The CO gas sensor and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) tests prove that the P-Cu has better CO adsorption and enrichment capacity than C-Cu due to the rich pore structure. As a result, P-Cu exhibited a high C2 selectivity with a Faradaic efficiency (FE C2 ) of 57.22% at −1.3 V ( vs . RHE), which is about 2.5-fold than the C-Cu (FE C2 of 22.71%). This work provides an effective strategy to improve the activity and selectivity of C2 products in CO 2 RR by optimizing the adsorption/enrichment property of intermediates.

Enzyme-free electrochemical sensor based on ZIF-67 for the detection of superoxide anion radical released from SK-BR-3 cells

Huanhuan Zhang,Xuan Cai,Hongli Zhao,Wenqian Sun,Zhenxing Wang,Minbo Lan

Developing nanomaterials as alternatives of enzymes is of great significance to realize qualification and quantitation of superoxide anion (O 2 − ), which has been proved to play a crucial role in physiological condition. In this work, a novel electrochemical catalyst of cobalt nanoparticle doped porous cubic carbon (Co-PCC) was prepared through the calcination of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), which was obtained from one-step synthesis. Then Co-PCC was used to construct enzyme-free electrochemical sensor for the detection of O 2 − . The response of H 2 O 2 , though much lower than that of O 2 − , was also caught by the Co-PCC/SPCE. The fabricated sensor exhibited obvious response towards O 2 − in the range of 0.8–76.8 μM (R 2  = 0.997) with a high sensitivity of 3.59 × 10 −4  mA μM −1  cm −2 and a limit of detection of 0.41 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the proposed sensor can be used to detect O 2 − released from SK-BR-3 cells, which makes it possible to monitor the dynamic change of O 2 − in living cells.

Ni0.85Co0.15WO4 for Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 Under Mild Conditions with High Activity and Selectivity

Guo Chunmei,Guo Biao,Gao Xiaosu,Liang Jing,Meng Qide,Liu Jinxuan

Abstract Efficient catalysts play an important role in photoreduction of greenhouse gases (CO 2 etc.) to value-added chemicals such as CO. In this work, we synthesized a series of Ni 1−x Co x WO 4 (x = 0–1) catalysts by chemical co-deposition method. Among the prepared materials, Ni 0.85 Co 0.15 WO 4 exhibits superior catalytic performance for photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO with [Ru(bpy) 3 ]Cl 2 ·6H 2 O as the photosensitizer. The productivity and selectivity of CO are 14.33 mmol g −1 h −1 and 86.4%, respectively under visible light irradiation. The experimental results demonstrate that superiority of electron conductivity of metal tungstates and the high activity of Co active sites facilitate the separation and transfer of photo-induced charges and lead to the excellent performance of photcatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO. Graphic Abstract Ni 0.85 Co 0.15 WO 4 , combining the superiority of electron conductivity of metal tungstates with the high activity of Co active sites, exhibits high productivity and selectivity of CO in photo-reduction of CO 2 .

Effect of MoO3 on Pd nanoparticles for efficient formic acid electrooxidation

Jiayu Jin,Shuozhen Hu,Xinsheng Zhang,Shigang Sun

Palladium is a promising formic acid electro-oxidation (FAO) catalyst due to its higher initial activity than platinum. However, suffering from the adsorption of hydrogen and CO-like species, the activity and stability of Pd are still unsatisfied. Herein, palladium nanoparticles deposited on carbon supported molybdenum trioxide (Pd–MoO 3 /C) is prepared with MoO 3 as the promoter for FAO. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis proves the close contact between Pd and MoO 3 , which generates the hydrogen spillover effect and forms the Pd–Mo structure. The hydrogen spillover effect enhances the desorption of hydrogen from Pd and facilitates the FAO activity. Both the spillover effect and Pd–Mo structure contribute to the removal of CO ad and facilitate the durability and anti-CO poisoning ability of the catalyst. With the optimized ratio of MoO 3 to carbon black, the Pd–MoO 3 /C-20 catalyst owns the best specific activity of 5.86 mA cm −2 , which is 1.86 times of Pd/C.

Modulation of the Microwave Dielectric Properties of Si-Based Olivine Structured Ceramics Through the Variation of A-Site Ions

Wang Xi,Shi Xiaofei,Lin Kehuan,Cheng ZeLai,Huang FangYi,Wu XiaoHui,Su Hua,Tang XiaoLi

Mg 1+ x Co 1− x SiO 4 ( x  = 0–0.2) microwave dielectric ceramics were prepared via a solid-phase reaction method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data revealed a single-phase structure for these ceramics, with no phase changes with increasing Mg content, and Mg 1+ x Co 1− x SiO 4 ( x  = 0–0.2) possessed an olivine structure. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were refined via the Rietveld method to obtain crystal structure information. P–V–L bond theory was applied to analyze the crystal structure changes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images highlighted a dense and uniform surface grain distribution with scarce pores. Raman spectroscopy was employed to characterize the impact of lattice vibrations on the Q×f factor. Excellent microwave dielectric properties were exhibited by the MgCoSiO 4 ceramics sintered at 1250 °C for 4 h (ε r  = 7.17, Q×f  = 46120 GHz, and τ f  = −61.7 ppm/°C) and the Mg 1+ x Co 1− x SiO 4 ( x  = 0.05–0.2) ceramics sintered at 1400 °C (ε r  = 6.9, Q×f  = 118575 GHz, and τ f  = −47.7 ppm/°C).
