Magnetic recyclable CdS/CoFe2O4 S-scheme heterojunction for efficient photo-Fenton degradation antibiotics CIP and high concentration dye RhB

Shu Wang,Xin Li,Yiwei Wang,Wenlong Yang,Shuang Han,Hui Zhang

The persulfate (PMS)-activated photo-Fenton system has emerged as a promising solution for addressing severe environmental contamination, owing to its efficient generation of strongly oxidizing free radicals. Herein, we present a magnetically recyclable CdS/CoFe 2 O 4 S-scheme heterostructure with broad-spectrum response, demonstrating exceptional performance in degrading ciprofloxacin (CIP) and high-concentration rhodamine B (RhB). A mild synthesized strategy was used to construct CdS/CoFe 2 O 4 composite, meanwhile, experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations were combined to exhibit the phase structure, interface heterojunction, surface chemical state, energy band structure, surface photovoltage, charge transfer mechanism, and magnetic property. In our work, the best degradation rates of CIP and RhB are 5.63 μmol·min −1 ·g -1 cat. and 13.91 μmol·min −1 ·g -1 cat. , respectively, with the contribution order of reactants to be h + >·SO 4 - >·O 2 – >·OH, which proves a synergy effect on the production of reactive oxygen free radicals and available photogenerated charge to boost the photo-Fenton applications. This work opens a new avenue for the construction of low-cost, high-efficiency, and magnetic recycling semiconductor heterojunction for enhanced photo-Fenton applications.

Spinel CoFe2O4 nanoparticles-catalyzed advanced oxidation processes for oxytetracycline degradation: Understanding the influence of temperature and developing photothermal countermeasure

Qiwen Chen,Zhixiang Tan,Shengxian Cao,Gaili Ke,Liuchun Chen,Yiwen Yang,Tao Han,Shan Yang,Kun Liu,Huichao He

In the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater, the influence of temperature on heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) efficiency is often overlooked, hindering practical guidance for cold conditions. Herein, spinel CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were studied as catalysts to activate HCO 3 − /H 2 O 2 (BAP), persulfate (PMS) and peracetic acid (PAA) for oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation at different temperatures, respectively. The apparent activation energy of OTC degradation in CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS, CoFe 2 O 4 /BAP and CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA system was 28.18, 21.02 and 41.17 kJ mol −1 , respectively, showing temperature dependent feature. Three CoFe 2 O 4 -catalyzed AOPs' activity was proportional to temperature. At 5 ± 1.5 °C and 15 ± 1.5 °C, three CoFe 2 O 4 -catalyzed AOPs' efficiency in OTC degradation was unsatisfactory. Under visible light LED irradiation, three CoFe 2 O 4 -catalyzed AOPs' activity for OTC degradation at low temperatures was significantly improved, through making use the photothermal property of spinel CoFe 2 O 4 to rise temperature and accelerate reactions. The degradation of OTC in three CoFe 2 O 4 -catalyzed AOPs was initiated by typical reactive species that be mainly produced from CoFe 2 O 4 activating BAP (•OH, 1 O 2 , O 2 •- , CO 3 •- ), PMS (O 2 •- , •OH, 1 O 2 , SO 4 •- ) or PAA ( 1 O 2 , •OH).

Bimetal-organic framework-derived porous CoFe2O4 nanoparticles as biocompatible anode electrocatalysts for improving the power generation of microbial fuel cells

Tingli Ren,Yuanfeng Liu,Chunhong Shi,Congju Li

Hypothesis The relatively lower power density of Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), primarily resulting from weak biofilm habitation and sluggish extracellular electron transfer (EET) at the anode interface, limits their practical implementation on a large scale. To address this challenge, porous CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles could be used as anode electrocatalysts based on the following considerations: (i) the introduction of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles endows the anode with a rough surface that facilitates biofilm formation; (ii) the positively charged Co and Fe ions improve the interfacial affinity of anodes, enabling rapid immobilization and colonization of negatively bacteria; (iii) the multi-valent metal states of Co and Fe can function as electron shuttles, mediating EET process between biofilm and anode. Experiments CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles prepared with a bimetal-organic framework (B-MOF) as precursor, were modified to the surface of carbon cloth as the anode of MFCs. Findings MFCs equipped with CoFe 2 O 4 anode achieved a maximum power density of 1026.68 mW m −2 , which was approximately 3.4 times higher than that of the pristine carbon cloth. Additionally, the biofilm density and viability on the anode were enhanced after CoFe 2 O 4 modification. Considering the facile fabrication process and superior electrocatalytic performance, the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles are promising electrocatalysts for high performance and cost-effective MFCs.

Efficient Degradation of Atrazine by Magnetic CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 Catalyzed Peroxymonosulfate and Its Enhancement of Photocatalytic Ability Under Visible-Light

An Ji-Bin,Hu Dai-Peng,Li Yan-Lin,Chen Na-Li

The Magnetic photocatalytic cobalt ferrite/graphitic-carbon nitride (CoFe2O4/g-C3N4) composites with enhanced photocatalytic activity were successfully fabricated through a simple calcination method. Scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy were applied to characterize the samples. The photocatalytic behavior of CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 was assessed by degradation of atrazine in photo Fenton-like system under visible light irradiation. The results showed that CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 with 2.0 gL–1 catalyst loading in the presence of 1 mM peroxymonosulfate (PMS) exhibited the best catalytic performance, and more than 97% of atrazine was destructed in 12 min. This enhancement could be attributed to the synergistic effect between CoFe2O4 and g-C3N4 promoting longer lifetime of separated electron–hole pairs derived from the formation of the heterojunction between CoFe2O4 and g-C3N4. This could enhance the composite-mediated activation of PMS for the visible-light driven degradation of atrazine. Moreover, the quenching tests showed that sulfate radicals were responsible for the atrazine degradation. CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 composites have strong magnetic ability, thus their recovery from water could be readily achieved by applying external magnetic field. This study demonstrates reasonable performance of the PMS/CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 system in water matrix as potentially important candidate for environmental remediation.

Self-Enhanced Reductive–Oxidative Cascade Enabled by In Situ Iodide Mediation: Synergistic Removal of MIAA and BPA over Pd–CoFe2O4

Jingjing Liu,Liyu Shi,ShuoShuo Mao,Fang Li,Juan Zhou

The remediation of aquatic environments cocontaminated with halogenated organics and phenolic pollutants poses a significant challenge to conventional single-mode treatment technologies. To address this, we engineered a bifunctional Pd–CoFe2O4 catalyst that orchestrates a synergistic reductive–oxidative (R–O) cascade for the simultaneous elimination of monoiodoacetic acid (MIAA) and bisphenol A (BPA). This system operates on a novel converting reduction byproducts into catalytic resources strategy: initially, favorable hydrodeiodization of MIAA occurs on Pd sites using NaBH4 as a hydrogen source, releasing iodide ions (I–). Crucially, rather than persisting as waste, these I– ions serve as in situ mediators that activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the subsequent oxidative stage. The rapidly generated reactive iodine species (RIS, e.g., I•, IO3–) facilitate the ultrafast degradation of BPA within 5 min, significantly outperforming standalone advanced oxidation processes. Mechanistically, the Pd0/Pdn+ species determine the reductive efficiency, while the Co2+/Co3+ redox cycle on the spinel support amplifies PMS activation. Consequently, this integrated R–O system achieves a 67% total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency, far exceeding the 17% of the molecular oxidation alone. This work establishes a transformative paradigm for converting reduction byproducts into catalytic assets for the efficient treatment of complex wastewater.

A sandwich-structured flexible carbon fiber with RGO/CoFe2O4 electromagnetic synergistic enhancement for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal management

Huiyang Jiang,Ying Huang,Xiaoxiao Zhao,Honghang Zhu,Hanjie Huang,Meng Zong

Although traditional ferrite wave-absorbing materials demonstrate excellent magnetic loss capabilities, they suffer from high density, dependence on a single magnetic loss mechanism, and impedance mismatch in the high-frequency range. These factors significantly limit their application in lightweight equipment and broadband stealth technologies. Therefore, it is particularly important to combine ferrite with other materials to enhance its wave-absorbing properties and reduce the overall density of the composite. This study successfully fabricated composite films of CNF-CoFe 2 O 4 (CC), CNF-RGO (CR), and CNF-(CoFe 2 O 4 /RGO) (CCR) using electrospinning technology, where CNF serves as the substrate loaded with magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles and dielectric RGO. On one hand, the electrospun films, composed of high-aspect-ratio CNF and compressed into multilayered stacking configurations, enhance the effective absorption area and promote multiple reflections and interfacial effects of electromagnetic waves within the CNF matrix, contributing to conductive and polarization relaxation losses. On the other hand, the magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles result in eddy current and resonance losses. The formulated S1 sample exhibits a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −38 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.4 GHz, while achieving a high thermal conductivity of 4.983 W/(m·K), thereby enhancing the material’s versatility.

Design and fabrication of a hollow nanobowl-like heterostructured PPy@Co/CoFe2O4@HNBC composite as a remarkable electromagnetic wave absorber

Pan Xu,Hongru He,Jiyong Fang,Tiantian Shang,Shan Wang,Shuyuan Ge,Shuoqi Wu,Xigui Yue

A heterostructured polypyrrole@magnetic Co/CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles@hollow nanobowl-like carbon (PPy@Co/CoFe 2 O 4 @HNBC) composite with a layer-by-layer (LBL) structure based on HNBC was prepared via a facile three-step process. HNBC was synthesized by a typical template method, then sequentially decorated with Co/CoFe 2 O 4 and PPy via in-situ growth and polymerization. The relationship between the structure, components, and electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance of PPy@Co/CoFe 2 O 4 @HNBC was studied in depth. The EMW absorbing research shows that PPy@Co/CoFe 2 O 4 @HNBC exhibits excellent EMW absorption capability, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of up to −61.85 dB at 12.80 GHz and 1.90 mm and a widest effective absorption bandwidth (WEAB, RL≤−10.00 dB) value of 5.60 GHz at 1.70 mm. The excellent EMW absorption performance of PPy@Co/CoFe 2 O 4 @HNBC can be ascribed to the multiple reflection and scattering that occurs due to its unique microstructure and the synergistic effects between the polarization and conduction induced dielectric loss , and the natural resonance and exchange resonance induced magnetic loss. As a consequence, the PPy@Co/CoFe 2 O 4 @HNBC composite designed in this work is a hopeful candidate for application in the field of EMW absorption.

Fabrication of CoFe2O4/Mn3O4 decorated ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets membrane for persistent organic pollutants removal: Synergistic performance and mechanisms

Binghong Chen,Jing Wang,Renjie Li,Hongjun Lin,Bisheng Li,Liguo Shen,Yanchao Xu,Meijia Zhang

Integration of sulfate radicals-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) with separation membranes has enthralled considerable attentions because it can remove persistent toxic micropollutants in a low-energy and cost-effective manner. However, fabrication of such an integrated membrane simultaneously with excellent self-cleaning property, catalytic capability and long-term durability remains a challenge. Herein, for the first time, CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) and Mn 3 O 4 (MO) nanoparticles were anchored on ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (UCN) nanosheets via a solvothermal method to prepare heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts (MO/CFOUCN). Systematic characterizations demonstrated the successful preparation of powder catalysts with favorable degradation ability. Notably, the optimal composite catalyst possessed satisfactory degradation (94.5 %) and kinetic rate (0.1367 min −1 ) for norfloxacin (NOR) within 30 min. Thereafter, an integrated MO/CFO/UCN@P membrane was fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration of the catalyst on a supporting membrane surface. It was interestingly found that, benefiting from the synergistic effect of in-situ oxidation and membrane filtration, activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) endowed the membrane with high removal rates (over 91.8 % for tetracycline, bisphenol A, humic acid (HA)) and high permeation flux (332.7 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) driven solely by gravity. Significantly, the membrane achieved a flux recovery rate of 91.9 % with the assistance of PMS after filtering HA solution. Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests confirmed that both radical and nonradical pathways contributed to the mineralization of NOR. Based on the detection of intermediates in the degradation process, potential NOR degradation pathways were proposed. Overall, this study provided new ideas about integrating Fenton-like catalysts with membrane technology for removal of persistent organic pollutants.

Efficient doping to synthesize high-performance Co/Fe-BiOCl photocatalyst assisted by the ion release from novel CoFe2O4 nanofiber reservoir

Jun Liu,Hui Wang,Meng-Jie Chang,Wen-Juan Li,Wen-Yao Zhu,Ge Bai,Liu-Qing Yang,Hui-Ling Du,Zhen-Min Luo,Ting Shang

Metal ion doping is an efficient method to achieve high photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. However, the current synthetic methods by using inorganic salts as doped sources in the precursor reaction system might suffer from ion waste and second pollution. Herein, we developed a novel method by employing electrospun nanofibers as ion reservoir to release metal ions for the synthesis of ion-doped semiconductors with high photocatalytic activity . As demonstrated, Co/Fe co-doped BiOCl photocatalyst (Co/Fe-BOC) was facilely prepared in the presence of CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers as Co and Fe ion reservoir via a simple solvothermal method . Compared with BiOCl, the resulted Co/Fe-BOC shows increased specific surface area, visible light response as well as separation and transportation efficiencies of photogenerated carriers. Thus, the Co/Fe-BOC exhibits significantly enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity to degrade 99.4% rhodamine B (RhB) within 4 min. This new doping approach not only avoids the ion waste and pollution during the reaction process but also facilitates the separation of the photocatalyst. Moreover, the CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers could be repeatedly used as ion reservoir to prepare high-performance Co/Fe-BOC. This nanofiber-based ion doping approach provides a novel, universal and promising insight to obtain doped semiconductors with high photocatalytic activity.

Solvent-controlled strategy to perfect microstructure and microwave dissipation ability of pyramid-like carbon embedded with Co3Fe7 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles

Pengfei Yin,Yuting Tang,Limin Zhang,Sihan Liu,Jian Wang,Yi Zhang,Xiyuan Sun,Zhihua Gao,Haipeng Hu,Yongpeng Zhao

Preparation of microwave absorption materials is one of the most effective way to solve hazards of excessive microwave radiation at current stage. Herein, a series of pyramid-like carbon frameworks embedded with Co 3 Fe 7 and CoFe 2 O 4 phases have been synthesized via a solvent-controlled strategy in solvothermal-annealing process. The solvent ratio of DMF and DW has great impact on the morphology and electromagnetic wave dissipation properties of such composites. The composite can reach the maximal RL of −24.66 dB at 7.68 GHz and the optimal EAB of 6.3 GHz for only 2.62 mm, this realization of wider EAB at thin thickness is due to the synergic effect of dielectric polarization, magnetic resonance, structural damping and so on. Most important of all, the wide range of appropriate impedance matching in as-prepared composite is the first premise. The broad EAB of composite prepared here reveals its prospect for actual application in protection of microwave radiation.

CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs Substrate for Rapid Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction and Efficient SERS Detection of Complex Samples All-in-One

Huadong Zhang,Huasheng Lai,Xiangrong Wu,Gongke Li,Yufei Hu

Fast and accurate practical sample detection is a great challenge in on-site detection. Herein, we developed a CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs substrate for rapid and efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of aromatic amines and nitrofuran in real samples all-in-one. Magnetic CoFe2O4 beads filled inside halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) can avoid aggregation of particles, endow the substrate with the rapid magnetic separation ability to simplify the pretreatment procedure, and reduce complex matrix interference. Meanwhile, outer surface AuNPs can generate electromagnetic enhancement and hot spots to amplify Raman signals of target molecules enriched/concentrated by HNTs. The CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs substrate exhibited excellent SERS activity (high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and repeatability), pH stability (3.0–11.0), and good MSPE ability (fast magnetic enrichment/separation ability within 5 min). The CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs MSPE SERS substrate can be applied for the determination of 4,4′-thioaniline and nitrofurantoin with a linear range of 0.054–21.7 mg/L and 0.05–1.0 mg/L, and the limits of detection were down to 0.026 mg/L and 0.014 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, the enhancement factor (EF) of the substrate to 4,4′-thioaniline is up to 2.7 × 107. Besides, the substrate can realize practical SERS determination of trace 4,4-thioaniline in cosmetics and nitrofurantoin in fish feed and aquatic samples. The recoveries were varied from 71.6% to 103.6% for 4,4-thioaniline in hair dyes and 81.9% to 116.3% for nitrofurantoin in fish feed and aquatic samples, respectively. Such a robust and efficient MSPE SERS substrate possesses great potential in rapid detection (within 15 min) for a practical sample, and it also provides a methodology for the preparation of other HNTs-based composites.

Novel Z-scheme visible-light photocatalyst based on CoFe2O4/BiOBr/Graphene composites for organic dye degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Meirun Li,Chi Song,Ying Wu,Min Wang,Zhepeng Pan,Yang Sun,Liang Meng,Shuguang Han,Lijie Xu,Lu Gan

In the present study, a novel visible-light Z-scheme photocatalyst based on BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 /graphene ternary structure was prepared through a hydrothermal approach. The morphology and structure of the prepared photocatalyst were characterized, and the optical properties of the photocatalyst were investigated as well. Afterwards, the photocatalytic performance of the Z-scheme photocatalyst were evaluated through degrading rhodamine B dye and reducing Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation. Compared with pure BiOBr and BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 binary composites, the prepared BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 /graphene ternary exhibited higher photo-degradation and photo-reduction efficiency. It was also found that the holes were the main active species which were generated during the photocatalysis process. Due to the existence of conductive graphene, the photo-generated active species could be effectively stabilized and quickly transferred. Moreover, the prepared photocatalyst showed very promising recyclable stability, in which the photocatalytic performance of the composites barely decreased after five consecutive circles. The present study provides a new insight in designing and constructing high-efficient and recyclable photocatalyst for aqueous pollutant removal.
