As a transition-metal oxide semiconductor with variable tungsten valence states and abundant oxygen vacancies, WO3−x has attracted broad interest because its localized surface plasmon resonance performance can be tuned via controlling the concentration of oxygen vacancies. In this work, Cs-doped WO3−x nanosheets (Cs-WO3−x) were synthesized by solvothermal method. Subsequently, Cs-WO3−x were further annealed in hydrogen and air atmosphere, respectively, forming a compact, highly crystalline surface layer (with thickness of ∼14 nm) on the surface while retaining abundant oxygen vacancy defects in the center region (denoted as a-Cs-WO3−x). As a proof-of-concept, the as-prepared nanosheets were employed as light harvesting materials in photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO), a-Cs-WO3−x nanosheets demonstrate significantly improved degradation efficiency with respect to WO3−x and Cs-WO3−x counterparts. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the hot-carrier transfer routes, which relies on not only direct electron transfer but also the more efficient plasmon-induced resonant energy transfer pathway. This work develops new pathway and provides important insights into the regulation of oxygen vacancies.

As the largest organ interfacing directly with the external environment, skin is highly vulnerable to injuries from trauma (e.g., vehicular accidents, lacerations, burns) or surgical resection. The healing of such defects is frequently protracted and susceptible to microbial infection, which exacerbates recovery timelines. Bioelectric signaling has emerged as a critical modulator of wound repair processes. Concurrently, decades of antibiotic misuse have precipitated widespread bacterial resistance, with biofilm formation further complicating therapeutic efficacy. Consequently, developing safe and effective antimicrobial strategies to shield wounds against drug-resistant pathogens is imperative. Metallic nanoparticles, notably zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), have garnered significant attention for their potent antibacterial properties. To utilize this advantage, we prepared a piezoelectric nanofibrous membrane via electrospinning. This membrane integrates polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for piezoelectricity, ZnO-NPs for antimicrobial activity, and chitosan (CS) for hemostatic and supplementary antibacterial functions. Bioelectric stimulation was achieved through dual mechanisms: exogenous low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and endogenous mechanical motion from the rat model. The resulting ZnO@PVDF/CS membrane exhibited excellent material properties, strong antimicrobial efficacy, and accelerated in vivo wound healing in rat models.

In order to improve the therapeutic effect, prolong the action time and reduce the side effects of the first generation thrombolytic drug urokinase (UK), a novel UK/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-chitosan (CS)-arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (Arg-Gly-Asp) (RGD) drug delivery
system was synthesized by chemical bonding/non covalent bond modification/ultrasonic dispersion. The results showed that the diameter of the UK/MWCNTs-CS-RGD drug delivery system was about 30–40 nm, there was a layer of UK was attached to the surface of the tube wall, and the distribution
was relatively uniform. The average encapsulation efficiency was 83.10%, and the average drug loading was 12.81%. Interestingly, it also had a certain sustained-release effect, and its release law was best fitted by first-order kinetic equation. Moreover, the accelerated and long-term stability
test results show that it had good stability. Compared with free UK, UK/MWCNTs-CS-RGD had thrombolytic effect in vitro. In addition, MTT experiment showed that the prepared MWCNTs-CS-RGD nanomaterials had good biocompatibility. A rabbit model of carotid artery thrombosis was used to
conduct targeted thrombolysis experiments in vivo. Compared with free UK, UK/MWCNTs-CS-RGD could be enriched in the thrombosis site to achieve thrombus targeting. UK/MWCNTs-CS-RGD drug delivery system was expected to become an effective thrombolytic drug for targeted therapy of thrombosis.

Two new IR NLO compounds, namely Rb2Zn3P4S13 (1) and Cs2Zn3P4S13 (2), have been obtained by introducing d10 closed-shell cations in an alkali-metal containing thiophosphate system. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and feature a 3D [Zn3P4S13] anionic framework. Both compounds exhibit moderate phase-matching SHG intensities at 1910 nm (0.1 × AGS for 1 and 2) and high LIDTs (6.1 × AGS for 1 and 5.2 × AGS for 2). They have wide transparent regions of 2.5–17.7 μm and 2.5–17.0 μm for 1 and 2, respectively, which cover the important far-IR atmospheric window of 3–5 and 8–14 μm for practical applications. Both compounds simultaneously contain two types of NLO-active thiophosphate units (PS4 and P2S6) in their structures, which to the best of our knowledge, is unprecedented in known IR NLO thiophosphates. The NLO efficiencies of 1 and 2 are mainly due to the covalent [Zn2P2S7]2− framework, in which the contribution of P2S6 units is remarkably larger than that of the PS4 units. This work sheds light on the design of promising IR NLO materials by mixing different thiophosphate functional motifs.

In this study, a chitosan-based high polymer antibacterial agent CS-g-DMC with high water solubility was synthesized via an environmentally friendly initiator system of H 2 O 2 and ascorbic acid (Vc). The CS-g-DMC is used for the long-effective antibacterial finishing of cotton fabric. SEM, EDS, FTIR, XPS, and XRD were conducted to characterize the finished fabric. After the treatment, the CS-g-DMC were cross-linked with cellulose by 1,2,3,4-Butane tetracarboxylic acid BTCA thus immobilized on cotton fabrics. Results showed CS-g-DMC had linked with cellulose by stable chemical bond and uniformly distributed on the surface of cotton fiber. The antibacterial test shows that after treatment, the inhibition rates of the cotton fabric against E. coli and S. aureus are above 99.9%. Moreover, the inhibition rates of the two bacteria reach 94.3% and 95.3% after washing ten times, respectively. The finished cotton fabric had significantly improved hydrophily; its contact angle decreased from 107° to 104°. Its breaking force significantly increased from 173.38 to 219.33 N, while its breaking elongation and moisture transmission rate had no significant decrease. In general, CS-g-DMC-finished cotton fabrics achieve long-lasting antibacterial properties and higher mechanical properties while retaining a high degree of wearing comfort.

The accumulation of uremic toxins in blood might induce chronic renal failure (CRF). The incidence of CRF was as high as 10%. The traditional therapy for CRF was hemodialysis, which was more effective to remove small molecules, such as urea and creatinine. However, this detoxification method ignored the tissue functional adaption due to the retention of macromolecule uremic toxins. To solve this problem, this paper developed a new kind of chitosan/carboxyl graphite oxide (CS/GO-COOH) scaffold via a double-lyophilization method. Then, this synthetic scaffold was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, hydrophilic test, mechanical property, and in vitro detoxification test. Covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding were formed, indicating the strong interactions between CS and GO-COOH. There were interconnected networks in the synthesized scaffold. The mechanical test suggested that the GO-2500 scaffold had excellent mechanical strength, which was 7.41 ± 0.82 MPa with 25% shrink. What is more, GO-2500 could totally rebound within 1s, after compressed to 90% shrink. The rates of GO-2500 were 1587 ± 60 and 246 ± 10% according to the water uptake and retention data, respectively. Furthermore, the detoxification of GO-2500 to urea, creatinine, VB12, and β2-m were 67.59 ± 2.31, 39.67 ± 2.95, 31.51 ± 2.62, and 83.82 ± 7.76 mg/g, respectively. The resulting CS/GO-COOH scaffold held great potential for the detoxification of uremic toxins.

The catalytic efficiency for methyl methacrylate (MMA) production via aldol condensation of methyl propionate (MP) and formaldehyde (FA) depends on the acid–base and structural properties of the catalyst. Inspired by this, a synergistic design strategy is implemented by fabricating Cs/Al-MCM-41 catalysts, where Al doping preserves ordered mesopores and tunes acid–base properties. This approach generates an optimal density of medium acid sites together with a balanced distribution of weak-to-medium base sites, leading to 90% MMA selectivity and a space-time yield of 0.29 g/(gcat·h). Moreover, the mesoporous confinement not only enhances the dispersion of Cs active species but also suppresses the condensation of coke precursors, thereby significantly improving the catalyst stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that basic Cs–O–Si sites and acidic Al sites cooperatively activate MP and FA, promoting aldol condensation. This work demonstrates that the integration of targeted acid–base regulation with structural confinement provides a rational catalyst design principle for efficient aldol condensation.

P(NIPAM-AM)/CS/TA-Fe 3+ hydrogel integrates NIR actuation and self-sensing. • Optimized network enables a 4.7 s fast response and 104° maximum bending. • TA-Fe 3+ coordination offers a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 27.76%. • Linear resistance-strain mapping predicts bending angles with ≤ 2.67% error. • The dual-function material allows real-time feedback for closed-loop control. Conventional hydrogel actuators often suffer from single functionality and a lack of real-time state feedback, restricting their potential in closed-loop control and intelligent applications. To address this, we designed a synergistically crosslinked composite hydrogel based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-AM)), tannic acid-iron ion (TA-Fe 3+ ) complexes, and chitosan (CS). This hydrogel integrates near‑infrared (NIR)‑driven actuation with resistive self‑sensing and exhibits excellent shape programming and multidirectional actuation capabilities. By systematically optimizing the composition, the hydrogel with 0.1 mL of CS solution achieves a rapid response time of only 4.7 s and a maximum bending angle of 104°. Furthermore, at an Fe 3+ content of 120 mg, the hydrogel demonstrates a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 27.76% and an initial conductivity of 2.549 (Ω·m) −1 . It exhibits excellent self-sensing characteristics, with a bending gauge factor of 0.019 and high angle-sensing accuracy with an error of ≤ 2.67%. This work provides a simple and efficient strategy for developing intelligent soft materials that integrate actuation and sensing. Poly(TA-Arg) coating with self-supplying NO fabricated via ethanol-water system. • Poly(TA-Arg) sample possesses a low degradation rate. • HA@CS nanoparticles synthesized with optimal HA:CS ratio. • HA@CS sample promotes endothelialization via PI3K-Akt-eNOS and Nrf2 pathways. Rapid degradation and inadequate re-endothelialization hinder the clinical application of biodegradable magnesium (Mg) alloy stents, while thrombosis and bacterial colonization further compromise early implant performance. To address these challenges, a hierarchical bilayer coating, consisting of an inner poly(α-thioctic acid)-L-arginine (Poly(TA-Arg)) layer and an outer hyaluronic acid/chitosan (HA@CS) nanoparticle layer (particle size, ∼240 nm), was fabricated on a fluorinated ZE21B Mg alloy. The Poly(TA-Arg) layer supported endothelial cell (EC)-mediated endogenous nitric oxide (NO) production. It also provided strong interfacial adhesion and corrosion protection, reducing the corrosion current density to 5.60 × 10 −8 A cm −2 . The HA@CS layer exhibited antioxidant activity, prolonged clotting time, low hemolysis, and > 99% antibacterial efficacy, as determined by plate counting. The bilayer coating promoted EC proliferation while inhibiting smooth muscle cell growth. RNA sequencing suggested that the pro-endothelialization effect was associated with PI3K-Akt- endothelial nitric oxide synthase-related signaling and an Nrf2-related antioxidant response. In a rat abdominal aorta model, the coated wire was surrounded by a thin, well-organized neointima with endothelial coverage, minimal inflammation, and no evident thrombosis. No obvious histopathological abnormalities were observed in major organs, and hematological parameters remained within normal ranges. This multifunctional coating provides a potential strategy for improving the vascular compatibility of biodegradable Mg stents. Flexible wearable strain sensors that accurately capture joint motion are essential for rehabilitation assessment, motion monitoring, and human–machine interaction. However, conventional hydrogel sensors often suffer from limited mechanical robustness, poor durability, insufficient conductivity, or biocompatibility concerns caused by conductive fillers and chemical crosslinkers. Here, we report a multifunctional biocompatible hydrogel strain sensor, PCH, constructed from a polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) double-network matrix, hydroxyl ethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP)-mediated dynamic coordination crosslinking, and potassium chloride (KCl)-based ion conduction. FTIR analysis confirms the formation of a hybrid PVA/CS–HEDP network stabilized by hydrogen bonding and phosphonate-associated interactions, contributing to enhanced mechanical integrity. The PCH hydrogel exhibits favorable tensile properties, stable cyclic loading–unloading behavior, and reliable durability. Electromechanical tests show a linear and sensitive strain response with a gauge factor of 0.84 and high linearity (R2 = 0.9976). In joint mobility monitoring, PCH generates precise angle-dependent signals during ±90° wrist bending and maintains stable output under continuous bidirectional motion. It also shows repeatable finger-joint sensing performance and favorable cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and skin compatibility, demonstrating strong potential for real-time wearable joint monitoring.

To improve the permeability-selectivity balance in polyamide nanofiltration membranes, a dual-charged composite membrane (PES-CS/SBE-β-CD-PA) was fabricated via interfacial polymerization on a self-assembled CS/SBE-β-CD interlayer designed to regulate the interfacial availability and transport of PEI monomers during polyamide formation, yielding a selective layer with a lower apparent cross-sectional thickness (approximately 173 nm) and more uniform morphology. The negative potential of the interlayer-terminated surface before IP (−9.8 mV), the positive potential of the final PA surface (15.63 mV), and the sequential fabrication process support the designed negative-interlayer/positive-PA configuration. The optimized membrane exhibits a molecular weight cut-off of 445 Da, an average pore size of 0.51 nm, and MgCl 2 and MgSO 4 rejections of 94.00% and 91.34%, respectively, while maintaining a water permeance of 15.20 L m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . The morphology, pore-size, and charge results support a separation mechanism combining steric/hydration effects with charge-dependent Donnan partitioning. In addition, the membrane shows improved antifouling properties and stable separation performance during 72 h continuous filtration under the tested conditions. This work presents an effective interfacial-regulation strategy for constructing nanofiltration membranes with balanced separation and antifouling performance.

Repairing orbital bone defects remains a complex challenge in craniofacial surgery. Existing bone repair materials are plagued by issues such as intricate preparation processes and inadequate consideration of the spatiotemporal characteristics of bone healing. This study aimed to enhance the osteoinductive activity of poly (glycolide-co-caprolactone) (PGCL)-based materials through bicomponent modification, thereby providing a basis for the design of clinical bone repair materials. Hydroxyapatite/calcium sulfate/PGCL (HA/CS/PGCL) composite microspheres were fabricated via electrostatically assisted spray evaporation (ESASE). Their physicochemical properties and in vitro/in vivo osteogenic efficacy were evaluated using degradation-mineralization assays, MC3T3-E1 cell differentiation assessments and a rabbit orbital bone defect model. Innovatively, CS mesocrystal pore structure regulation was introduced to synergize with HA, achieving multidimensional optimization of surface hydrophilicity, sequential calcium ion release and mechanical properties. Results showed that in vitro mineralization formed native-like hydroxyapatite structures within 14 days. On HA/CS/PGCL surfaces, the proliferation activity of MC3T3-E1 cells reached 1.8 times that of the PGCL group after 7 days, with a 1.6-fold increase in alkaline phosphatase activity. In vivo, the composite microspheres achieved a new bone volume ratio (BV/TV) of 78.72% at 10 weeks, resulting in complete closure of the bone defect. Their trabecular structural parameters (trabecular thickness, Tb.Th; trabecular number, Tb.N) outperformed those of the single-component groups. Histological staining confirmed their ability to induce ordered collagen arrangement and the formation of dense new bone. In conclusion, the HA/CS synergistic modification strategy achieved the sequential release of calcium ions during bone repair and spatial regulation of the microsphere surface pore structure. The superior performance of HA/CS/PGCL microspheres in repairing complex bone defects lays an experimental foundation for clinical translation. Further research into the interactions between ion release and cell signaling is warranted.
