In this study, a novel bamboo activated carbon (BAC) with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) functionality was prepared by direct grafting in the presence of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a crosslinking agent. The BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was characterized by SEM, TEM, TGA, FTIR, XPS and its adsorption property for removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) under various experimental conditions was also investigated. The characterization results reflected that EDTA was successfully assembled on the surface of the BAC and average pore size increased from 4.10 to 4.83 nm as BAC grafted with EDTA. Adsorption data fitted very well in Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. As compared with the raw BAC, the maximum adsorption capacities of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA for the Pb(II) and Cu(II) increased from 45.45 to 123.45 mg g −1 and from 6.85 to 42.19 mg g −1 , since the existence of EDTA on modified BAC promoted the formation of chemical complex. The removal of heavy metal ions mainly depended on the complexation with EDTA and the electrostatic attractions with negatively charged surface of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA. The adsorption of Pb(II)/Cu(II) on the BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was pH dependent and pH 5–6 was considered an optimum. However, lower temperature favored the adsorption and the maximum adsorption was recorded at 20 °C. In addition, BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA had an excellent reusability with about 40% decline in the adsorption capacity for Pb(II) after fifth reuse. Insignificant influences of co-existing cations and natural organic matter (NOM) were found on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II). All the results demonstrate that BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA is a potential adsorbent for metal ions in wastewater.

Heavy metal ions such as Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ impose a significant risk to the environment and human health due to their high toxicity and non-degradable characteristics. Herein, Al(OH) 3 -polyacrylamide chemically modified with dithiocarbamates (Al-PAM-DTCs) was synthesized using formaldehyde, diethylenetriamine, carbon disulfide, and sodium hydroxide for rapid and efficient removal of Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ . The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis, and transmission electron microscope measurements. Al-PAM-DTCs showed rapid removal of Cu 2+ (<30 min) and Pb 2+ (<15 min) with high adsorption capacities of 416.959 mg/g and 892.505 mg/g for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ respectively. Al-PAM-DTCs also had high capacities in removing suspended solids and metal ions simultaneously in turbid bauxite suspensions. FTIR, thermodynamic study, and elemental mapping were used to determine the adsorption mechanism. The rapid, convenient, and effective adsorption of Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ indicated that Al-PAM-DTCs has great potential for practical applications in purification of other heavy metal ions from aquatic systems. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we report the synthesis of a new thiosemicarbazone-based drug of N′-(di(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)-4-(thiazol-2-yl)piperazine-1-carbothiohydrazide (HL) featuring a thiazole spectator for efficient coordination with Cu(II) to give [CuCl(L)]2(1) and [Cu(NO3)(L)]2(2). Both1and2exhibit dimeric structures ascribed to the presence of di-2-pyridylketone moieties that demonstrate dual functions of chelation and intermolecular bridging. HL,1, and2are highly toxic against hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines Hep-G2, PLC/PRF/5, and HuH-7 with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values as low as 3.26 nmol/mL (HL), 2.18 nmol/mL (1), and 2.54 × 10−5nmol/mL (2) for PLC/PRF/5. While the free ligand HLmay elicit its anticancer effect via the sequestration of bio-relevant metal ions (i.e., Fe3+and Cu2+),1and2are also capable of generating cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) to inhibit cancer cell proliferation. Our preliminary pharmacokinetic studies revealed that oral administration (per os, PO) of HLhas a significantly longer half-lifet1/2of 21.61 ± 9.4 h, nearly doubled as compared with that of the intravenous (i.v.) administration of 11.88 ± 1.66 h, certifying HLas an effective chemotherapeutic drug via PO administration.

Herein, the Cu(III) synthesized from copper plating effluent was developed for the first time to evaluate the onsite degradation performance of heavy metal complexes in the wastewater, thus achieving the purpose of “treating waste with waste”. The results indicated that synthetic Cu(III) presented the excellent decomplexation performance for Cu(II)/Ni(II)-organic complexes. The removal efficiency of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA significantly increased with increasing Cu(III) dosage, and the degradation of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA by synthetic Cu(III) system displayed highly pH-dependent reactivity. The radical quencher experiments confirmed that Cu(III) direct oxidation were mainly involved in the degradation of Cu(II)-EDTA. Additionally, the continuous decarboxylation process was proven to be the main degradation pathway of Cu(II)-EDTA in Cu(III) system. The coexisting substances (SO 4 2− , Cl − and fulvic acids) showed little impacts at low level for the removal of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA, while retarded the degradation of Cu(II)-EDTA slightly at high level, which features high selective oxidation. Encouragingly, it was also effective to remove Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA from in treating actual Cu/Ni-containing wastewater through synthetic Cu(III) treatment.

Iodinated contrast media compounds (ICMs) are intensively applied in medical diagnostic radiology and have received wide environmental concerns due to formation potential of iodinated disinfection byproducts. Conventional water/wastewater treatment processes cannot effectively remove ICMs; reducing their total organic iodine concentration is even more difficult. The source control or elimination of ICMs thus becomes necessary. We report here that the refractory ICMs (5 μM) can be efficiently deiodinated by ascorbate/ascorbic acid (AA) (200 μM) coupled with a trace amount of Cu(II) (5 μM) through catalytic reduction but not oxidation, contrary to the conventional concept of AA/Cu(II) coupling, which produces reactive oxygen species. Taking diatrizoate (DTZ, a refractory ICM) as an example, the coupling completely deiodinated DTZ without destroying its molecular structure. High-performance liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis revealed that ternary complexes form between Cu(II), ascorbate, and the anilide moiety of DTZ. Cu(II) in the ternary complex works as an efficient electron-transfer shuttle to convey electrons from ascorbate to the target compound, inducing sequential and complete deiodination. Both DTZ and the nonionic ICMs can be effectively deiodinated even in human urine. Thus, AA coupled with trace Cu(II) could be potentially useful for the source elimination of organic iodine of ICMs.

In recent years, the escalating attention on Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) and Heavy Metals in urban stormwater runoff highlights the critical role of Road-deposited sediments (RDS) as a significant carrier for pollutant occurrence and transport in runoff. However, existing research has overlooked the composite characteristics of PPCPs and Heavy Metals, hampering a holistic understanding of their transformation in diverse forms within runoff. This limitation impedes the exploration of their subsequent migration and conversion properties, thereby obstructing coordinated strategies for the control of co-pollution in runoff. This study focuses on the typical PPCP sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and heavy metal Cu(II) to analyze their occurrence characteristics in the Runoff-RDS system. Kinetics and isotherm studies reveal that RDS effectively accumulates SMX and Cu(II), with both exhibiting rapid association with RDS in the early stages of runoff. The accumulation of SMX and Cu(II) accounts for over 80 % and 70 % of the total accumulation within the first 240 min and 60 min, respectively. Moreover, as runoff pH values decrease, the initially synergistic effect between the co-pollutant transforms into an antagonistic effect. In the composite system, varying pH values from 2.0 to 6.0 lead to an increase in SMX accumulation from 4.01 mg/kg to 6.19 mg/kg and Cu(II) accumulation from 0.43 mg/g to 3.39 mg/g. Compared to the single system, the composite system capacity for SMX and Cu(II) increases by 0.04 mg/kg and 0.33 mg/g at pH 4.0. However, at pH 3.0, the composite system capacity for SMX and Cu(II) decreases by 0.21 mg/kg and 0.36 mg/g, respectively. Protonation/deprotonation of SMX under different pH conditions influences electrostatic repulsion/attraction between SMX and RDS. The mechanism of RDS accumulation of SMX involves Electron Donor-Acceptor (EDA) interaction, hydrogen bond interaction, and Lewis acid-base interaction. Cu(II) enrichment on RDS includes surface complexation reaction, electrostatic interaction, and surface precipitation. Complex formation enhances the accumulation of both SMX and Cu(II) on RDS in runoff. This study elucidates the co-occurrence characteristics and mechanisms of SMX and Cu(II) co-pollution in runoff systems. The findings contribute valuable insights to understanding the existence patterns and mechanisms of co-pollution, providing a reference for investigating the migration and fate of co-pollutant in runoff. Moreover, these insights could offer guidance for the development of effective strategies to mitigate co-pollution in rainwater.

Immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) adsorbents generally have excellent affinity for histidine-rich proteins. However, the leaching of metal ions from the adsorbent usually affects its adsorption performance, which greatly affects the reusable performance of the adsorbent, resulting in many limitations in practical applications. Herein, a novel IMAC adsorbent, i.e., Cu(II)-loaded polydopamine-coated urchin-like titanate microspheres (Cu-PDA-UTMS), was prepared via metal coordination to make Cu ions uniformly decorate polydopamine-coated titanate microspheres. The as-synthesized microspheres exhibit an urchin-like structure, providing more binding sites for hemoglobin. Cu-PDA-UTMS exhibit favorable selectivity for hemoglobin adsorption and have a desirable adsorption capacity towards hemoglobin up to 2704.6 mg g−1. Using 0.1% CTAB as eluent, the adsorbed hemoglobin was easily eluted with a recovery rate of 86.8%. In addition, Cu-PDA-UTMS shows good reusability up to six cycles. In the end, the adsorption properties by Cu-PDA-UTMS towards hemoglobin from human blood samples were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. The results showed that Cu-PDA-UTMS are a high-performance IMAC adsorbent for hemoglobin separation, which provides a new method for the effective separation and purification of hemoglobin from complex biological samples.

The Fenton-based oxidation process is an effective wastewater treatment approach for degrading organic pollutants. However, it has limitations in terms of pH range and secondary pollution. Cu(II)-mediated Fenton-like oxidation presents a promising alternative for applications. In this work, experimental approaches were integrated with kinetic modeling analysis to understand the production, performance and reaction mechanism of active species during the Cu(II)/H 2 O 2 process. Chemical probe analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance information verified the presence and properties of ·OH and Cu(III) in the Cu(II)/H 2 O 2 process. By using the periodate colorimetric technique, the relationship between reaction conditions and the generation of Cu(III) was further clarified. Together with theoretical analysis, the contribution of ·OH and Cu(III) to the elimination of bisphenol A (BPA) in the Cu(II)/H 2 O 2 process was examined. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that ·OH played a pivotal role under acidic conditions, accounting for 54.06 % and 62.06 % of BPA removal at pH 4 and 6, respectively. However, a dramatic shift occurred under alkaline conditions, where ·OH contributions decreased substantially to·3.35 % and 0.89 % at pH 10 and 12, respectively. The kinetic model for the removal of BPA by Cu(II)/H 2 O 2 process was calculated as V= 0.236·[BPA] 0.173 ·[Cu(II)] 0.619 ·[H 2 O 2 ] 1.556 using one-eighth lifetime method. Furthermore, Cu(III) was found to be more reactive toward the benzene ring than ·OH. This work contributes to our understanding of the Cu(II)-mediated Fenton-like oxidation process, and it could offer a promising new method for treating refractory organic wastewater.

In this study, Fe 3 O 4 -nanoparticles-contained polyamide 6 (PA 6) microparticles (FP) were developed by a first dispersion of Fe 3 O 4 -nanoparticles in ε-caprolactam (CL) monomer in the presence of polystyrene (PS) and a subsequent in situ CL open polymerization into PA 6, followed by PS removal. The FP microparticles (as magnetic separation material) and nanochitin (n-CT, as an effective metal-cation natural adsorbent) were then in situ encapsulated into poly(vinyl alcohol)-enhanced chitosan hybrids (PVA/CTS) to form biodegradable nanocomposite hydrogels (FPCC) with magnetic separation ability. The FPCC hybridized hydrogels enabled about 1.7-fold Cu(II) adsorption capacity as compared to the pure PVA/CTS hydrogels with a Cu(II) adsorption value of 38.7 mg/g. More attractively, the adsorption equilibrium could be achieved within 10 min, which is quicker than many previous adsorbents. Furthermore, simulation results indicated that Cu(II) adsorption behaviors of the hybrid hydrogels conform to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm model.

Transition metal carboxylates with O- and N-donor ligands are interesting for their structural features. Seven novel isonicotinamide(inic)-based metal complexes of [Cd(inic)2(L1)2(H2O)2] · 2H2O (1) (L1 = 2-chloronicotinate), [Cd(inic)2(L2)2(H2O)2] (2) (L2 = 2,4-dichlorobenzoate), [Cu(inic)2(L3)2] (3) (L3 = 4-chlorophenoxyacetate), [Cu3(inic)6(L4)2(HL4)2(H2O)2] · 2H2O (4) (L4 = azelate), [Zn(inic)2(L1)2(H2O)2] · (inic) · H2O (5), [Zn(inic)(L5)(H2O)4] (6) (L5 = 3-nitrophthalate) and [Zn2(inic)2(L6)2] · 5H2O (7) (L6 = 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) have been obtained by the introduction of the carboxylates by the common solution method and are structurally featured by different techniques of EA, IR spectra, TG and SCXRD analysis. The X-ray studies told that these complexes display mononuclear to trinuclear structures with octahedral/square-pyramidal geometry around the Zn2+, trigonal bipyramidal/octahedral at the Cu2+ and octahedral for the Cd2+. The inic in 1–7 are coordinated only in monodentate fashion with its ring N, while 5 has the lattice inic. The carboxylates coordinated to the metal in monodentate, chelating bidentate and bridging bidentate fashions. The pair of complementary N-H···O H-bonds from the CONH2 of the inic were found in all compounds except 7. Except 1 and 2, all other compounds bear the CH-O contacts from the pyridine CH of the inic. The intricate intra- and intermolecular classical H-bonds, CH-N, CH-O, CH-Cl, CH2-O, O-N, O-O, Cl-O, Cl-Cl, CH-π, CH2-π, C-π, N-π, Cl-π and π-π associations are elucidated by the X-ray crystallographic studies, which push the discrete complexes into high-dimensional ordered supramolecular structures.

Structural Fe(II/III) hydroxides on the shell of nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) are reactive sites for As(III) adsorption. Well-controlled structural Fe(II) hydroxides (SFH) is prepared to serve for As(III) removal in present study. With oxygen As(III) removal by SFH occurred efficiently but the removal efficiency was greatly reduced under anoxic conditions. The mineral transformation from SFH to lepidocrocite probably contributed to the robust removal efficiency of As(III). It is found that Cu(II), Cr(VI) and NO 2 − in aqueous solution could act as oxidants and promote the mineral transformation of SFH. A more efficient As(III) removal was therefore observed without oxygen. The removal efficiency decreased in the order O 2 /SFH ≈ Cu(II)/SFH > Cr(VI)/SFH ≈ NO 2 − /SFH at near neutral pH. The removal efficiency was less dependent on the initial pH for O 2 /SFH and Cu(II)/SFH systems than Cr(VI)/SFH and NO 2 − /SFH systems. Distribution of As on solid phases was able to describe the removal mechanism of As(III), and the results showed that the mineral transformation promoted the precipitation process and inhibited outer-sphere complexation, thus leading to enhanced As removal. With Cu(II), Cr(VI) and NO 2 − , the generation of oxidants from SFH transformation drove As(III) oxidation, and contributed to total As removal.

Conventional flocculants are difficult to effectively remove dissolved ions and organic matter from water. This work aims to develop an environmentally friendly and renewable core–shell type flocculant (MCHS-g-P(AM-IA)) with octopus tentacle-like strong adsorption structure. The organic shell hydrolyses into molecular chains like octopus tentacles and adsorb dissolved ions/organic macromolecules through suckers-like functional groups, while the magnetic core acts as the growth center of flocs. Configuration and physical/chemical properties of the flocculant were analyzed by a series of characterization methods. Set Cu(II) and malachite green (MG) as models of heavy metal and organic pollutants separately, the removal capacity of MCHS-g-P(AM-IA) for water contaminants was studied in single-contaminant system and binary-contaminant system. The flocculation behavior and mechanism of MCHS-g-P(AM-IA) were deeply investigated by analysis of pH-dependence, background cationic influence and flocculation kinetics and SEM-EDS/XPS analysis of flocs. Furthermore, the flocculation performance in actual water matrix and regeneration tests of MCHS-g-P(AM-IA) were carried out to evaluate the applicable feasibility of flocculants for purification of complex wastewater in single stage water treatment.
