The electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction provides a promising route to alleviate the greenhouse effect and energy crisis. We investigated the influencing factors that conversion of CO 2 to C 2 H 4 by preparing Cu 2 O nanoparticles (Cu 2 O-p, Cu 2 O-2p, and Cu 2 O-3p) with exposed different crystal facets, sizes, and grain boundaries. Impressively, the Cu 2 O-3p catalyst exhibits superior selectivity (57.8%) for C 2 H 4 generation due to its abundant {100} & {111} grain boundaries. The study demonstrated that rich grain boundaries have a significant effect on C C coupling for electrocatalysis CO 2 reduction, and offered a learnable route for high-efficient CO 2 reduction catalysts by regulating grain boundary.

The exploration of graphene-based electrochemical sensors has aroused intensive interest in application research. Here, we report the decoration of a reduced graphene oxide hydrogel film with Cu 2 O through a facile electrodeposition method and show that the as-prepared Cu 2 O/graphene hydrogel film can be directly utilized as an electrochemical H 2 O 2 sensor. The morphology and structure of the hydrogel composite are characterized, and the optimal electrodeposition time is determined. The graphene/Cu 2 O hydrogel film acting as a H 2 O 2 sensor exhibits high electrochemical sensing properties in terms of response, detection limit and selectivity. The present study could expand the potential of graphene hydrogel materials in the fields of sensors and biosensors.

Cu 2 O is an attractive material for the architectural design of integrated nanomaterials in photocatalysis. Herein, a contrastive study was carried out to explore the influence of morphology/exposed Cu 2 O facets on the template growth process and the difference of fabricated composites in photocatalysis performance. A series of Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 with core–shell structure was developed via a self-confinement strategy, in which Cu 2 O nanocrystals with various shapes (cube, truncated octahedron and octahedron) act as self-confinement template to grow Cu-based metal–organic frameworks (HKUST-1) shell. It was revealed that the growth of HKUST-1 on Cu 2 O crystal depended on the original Cu 2 O crystal. The exposure of (1 1 1) facet in Cu 2 O was more favorable to the growth of HKUST-1 than (1 0 0) crystal plane. Optical and photoelectrochemical characterizations revealed that the cubic Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 exhibited the outstanding light response and most efficient interfacial charge transfer and separation among three types of composites. As a result, the degradation rates of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) by cubic Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 under the visible light irradiation was 95.35% within 60 min, which was much higher than truncated octahedral Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 (78.81%) and octahedral Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 (66.58%). Mechanism explorations including radical capture experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance and band structure analysis showed that type II heterojunction was formed in cubic Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 and truncated octahedral Cu 2 O@HKUST-1, which was conducive to the separation and transfer of photo-generated carriers. However, type I heterojunction existed in octahedral Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 lead to the recombination of photocarriers. These findings revealed the interface-dependent photocatalytic performance in Cu 2 O@HKUST-1 and provided useful guidance for controllable construction of photocatalysts with heterojunction structure.

Cu2O has begun to show its charm and gain popularity in various photoelectrochemical (PEC) processes, but fast charge recombination and photochemical instability always limit its PEC water splitting activity and stability. Furthermore, H2O wetting on the Cu2O photocathode is the premise for PEC reaction, while research on carrier separation, photostability and still wettability has not been brought to the forefront. Herein, a self-polymerized dopamine coating is employed to directly anchor TiO2 (P25) on the surface of a Cu2O film electrode; nanoscale particles facilitate polydopamine (PDA) conformal assembly on Cu2O polyhedra. A ternary Cu2O/PDA/TiO2 composite photocathode is obtained and shows boosted PEC activity and stability. The advantages of this unique design are mainly reflected in three aspects: (1) the married heterojunction of TiO2/Cu2O provides a persistent driving force for charge separation by PDA natural adhesive properties; (2) the conversion of hydrophobicity–hydrophilicity is achieved to improve the wettability of the Cu2O film electrode assisted by conformal PDA coating; (3) the improvement of PEC stability is due to the inhibition of Cu2O photocorrosion covered by the PDA shelter. This advance bodes well for the development of the PEC field founded on multifunctional PDA.

Exploring novel and efficient photocatalysts to accelerate CO 2 photoreduction into useful chemicals or fuels is of great significance. In this work, we developed the three-dimensional (3D) structural heterojunction photocatalysts composed of ReS 2 and Cu 2 O by a drop-casting approach. The ReS 2 microspheres with nanosheets were deposited on the 3D structure of Cu 2 O/Cu foams. The analysis of UV–Vis absorption and PL spectra showed that the ReS 2 @Cu 2 O/Cu heterostructure delivered enhanced visible light absorption and improved charge carrier separation. The resulting ReS 2 @Cu 2 O/Cu-180 exhibited the CO yield of 14.3 µmol g −1 under the visible light irradiation. The realized S-scheme heterostructure not only promoted the separation of the photogenerated electron and hole pairs, but also enhanced the visible light absorption. Furthermore, the enriched electrons with high reducing abilities aggregated into the conduction band and diffused to the surface of Cu 2 O for favoring the CO 2 reduction and CO formation. This study is expected to provide a strategy to prepare high-performance S-scheme photocatalysts to perform efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

In view of recent advances in photodegradation of antibiotics, low cost and stable photocatalyst remain rare. In this article, shape-controlled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes with the larger specific surface area were successfully prepared via a simple template-engaged strategy. Cu2O nanocubes were synthesized through a reduction method as original templates, the core-shelled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes were formed by sulphuration with Na2S as sulphur source, and the Cu2O core can be incompletely removed by Na2S2O3 to generate the Cu2O@CuS nanoboxes. Herein, hierarchical nanoboxes with two-layered Cu2O@CuS were used as photocatalyst materials for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The obtained nanocubes manifested high specific surface area (39.65 m2 g−1) and large pore volume (12.3 cm3 g−1). The degradation performance for TC was investigated in detail, including the effect of parameters such as photocatalyst, pH and catalyst dosage. The results indicated that degradation efficiencies were higher than 90% under visible light. Moreover, the degradation efficiency was 71% after six times.

It is urgent to develop highly active catalysts toward hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) sensor in many industrial and biological processes, which usually is limited by high cost of instrumentation requirements and low-accuracy detection at low level. Herein, Cu 2 O@Cu 9 S 5 yolk-shell nanospheres has been synthesized via a facial wet chemical method and applied as electrocatalyst for non-enzymatic H 2 O 2 sensor. These Cu 2 O@Cu 9 S 5 yolk-shell nanospheres with mean sizes of 230 nm consisting of Cu 2 O conductive core and Cu 9 S 5 shell show numerous advantageous characteristics of well-sustained structural integrity, the homogeneous particle size distribution and visible mesoporosity morphology. The significantly improved electrocatalytic activity by catalyzing H 2 O 2 of the Cu 2 O@Cu 9 S 5 yolk-shell nanospheres as a sensor has been obtained by comparing with those neat Cu 2 O nanospheres and Cu 9 S 5 hollow nanospheres. This noticeable property is largely due to the synergistic catalysis effect of the contribution of the Cu 2 O and Cu 9 S 5 . Cu 2 O@Cu 9 S 5 yolk-shell nanospheres based non-enzymatic H 2 O 2 sensor displays the relatively wide linear range from 0.1 μM to 3.5 mM with a high sensitivity of 299.74 μA mM −1 cm −2 but low detection limit of 28.83 nM (S/N ≥ 3) for electrochemical detection of H 2 O 2 , which is potentially superior to other similar Cu 2 O-based sensors that has been reported in the literatures. Additionally, this sensor also demonstrates excellent selectivity of H 2 O 2 in the presence of various coactive interferences. This novel Cu 2 O@Cu 9 S 5 yolk-shell nanospheres electrocatalyst provides a broad application prospect for H 2 O 2 sensing.

Photocatalytic reforming of biomass has a broad prospects in the green and efficient production of high-value chemicals, which was in line with the sustainable development. Herein, we proposed a new photocatalytic system to produce lactic acid from xylose by using boron doping carbon nitride supported cuprous oxide (g-C 3 N 4 -B-Cu 2 O) under a weak alkaline system. The UV–vis and photoluminescence (PL) characterization showed that the introduction of boron and Cu 2 O into C 3 N 4 not only improved the catalyst UV–visible light absorption range, but promote the separation ability of photogenerated electron holes , which was beneficial for lactic acid forming. The poisoning experiments indicated that the free radicals such as 1 O 2 ,·OH,·O 2- and h + were the key active substances in the process of xylose photocatalytic reforming into lactic acid, and with the sacrificial agents such as benzoquinone (BQ), ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), isopropyl (IPA), and tryptophan (Trp) use, the yield of lactic acid significantly reduced. Remarkably, the maximum lactic acid yield of this work was 91.2 %, and it was obtained at 60 ℃ for 120 min with 99.3 % xylose conversion. More importantly, the g-C 3 N 4 -B-Cu 2 O photocatalyst exhibited the satisfied stability, and can be reused at least for nine times with the lactic acid yield loss less than 2.3 %. Finally, the plausible reaction pathway for xylose photocatalytic reforming to lactic acid over g-C 3 N 4 -B-Cu 2 O were also investigated in this work.

Copper oxide nanomaterials have been suggested to be efficient for highly selective multi-carbon (C 2+ ) production in CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), due to the introduction of surface Cu + species from oxide catalysts. However, the Cu + species on the catalyst surface are prone to being reduced to Cu 0 under reductive conditions during CO 2 RR. Here, a network-structured catalyst is developed consisting of ultrafine Cu 2 O/CuO nanoparticles that harbor an abundance of pores. This catalyst is synthesized via flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) method and engineered to confine carbon intermediates, which subsequently cover the local catalyst surface and stabilize Cu + species. As a result, a C 2+ products Faradaic efficiency (FE) of approximately 80.0% at a partial current density of 320.0 mA cm −2 is achieved, and a large C 2+ to C 1 ratio of ≈9.7. In situ XRD and XPS spectra are employed to reveal the indeed presence of Cu + species on the catalyst surface during the CO 2 RR process, which extensively improves the adsorption of * CO intermediates and thus the C─C coupling reaction to form C 2+ products.

The construction of extremely dispersed redox-heterojunctions is a critical step toward improving of photocatalytic activity. Nonetheless, electron transfer faces momentous hurdles at the interfaces of these redox-heterojunction, mainly as a result of the considerable gap and potential-barrier between them. To address this obstacle, a bifunctional phosphate was deliberately introduced as an electron-bridge into the Cu 2 O/CeO 2 redox-heterojunction system, aiming to necessitate a potential-barrier, establish a photoelectron transport route to improve the surface catalysis, and serve as a catalyst stabilizer , leading to improved dispersion of Cu 2 O on the CeO 2 surface. The resultant intricately dispersed and optimized redox-heterojunction showcased an unparalleled advancement in apparent quantum efficiency (AQE), attaining an approximate value of 1.41 % at 420 nm during the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The experimental findings established a conspicuous association between the substantial increase in AQE and the diminished interfacial migration resistance, heightened dispersion, and abundance of more active-sites, all accredited to phosphate-modulation in the redox-heterojunction. The work emphasizes the significant importance of phosphate in bridging the conduction and valence bands of semiconductors, leading to enhanced photocarrier separation efficiency and improved molecular dispersion.

Wound infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria pose a great threat to human health, and the development of non-drug-resistant antibacterial approaches has become a research priority. In this study, we developed Cu 2 O-SnO 2 doped polydopamine (CSPDA) triple cubic antibacterial nanoenzymes with high photothermal conversion efficiency and good Fenton-like catalase performance. CSPDA antibacterial nanoplatform can catalyze the generation of hydroxyl radical (·OH) from H 2 O 2 at low concentration (50 μg∙mL −1 ) under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation to achieve a combined photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). And the CSPDA antibacterial nanoplatform displays broad-spectrum and long-lasting antibacterial effects against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (100 %) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (100 %) in vitro . Moreover, in a mouse wound model with mixed bacterial infection, the nanoplatform demonstrates a significant in vivo bactericidal effect while remaining good cytocompatible. A core-shell-structured Cu 2 O@Mn 3 Cu 3 O 8 (CMCO) nanozyme is constructed to serve as a tumor microenvironment (TME)-activated copper ionophore to achieve safe and efficient cuproptosis. The Mn 3 Cu 3 O 8 shell not only prevents exposure of normal tissues to the Cu 2 O core to reduce systemic toxicity but also exhibits enhanced enzyme-mimicking activity owing to the better band continuity near the Fermi surface. The glutathione oxidase (GSHOx)-like activity of CMCO depletes glutathione (GSH), which diminishes the ability to chelate Cu ions, thereby exerting Cu toxicity and inducing cuproptosis in cancer cells. The catalase (CAT)-like activity catalyzes the overexpressed H 2 O 2 in the TME, thereby generating O 2 in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle to enhance cuproptosis. More importantly, the Fenton-like reaction based on the release of Mn ions and the inactivation of glutathione peroxidase 4 induced by the elimination of GSH results in ferroptosis, accompanied by the accumulation of lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species that can cleave stress-induced heat shock proteins to compromise their protective capacity of cancer cells and further sensitize cuproptosis. CMCO nanozymes are partially sulfurized by hydrogen sulfide in the colorectal TME, exhibiting excellent photothermal properties and enzyme-mimicking activity. The mild photothermal effect enhances the enzyme-mimicking activity of the CMCO nanozymes, thus inducing high-efficiency ferroptosis-boosted-cuproptosis.
