Birefringent materials, which can modulate the polarization of light, are almost exclusively limited to oxides. Peroxides have long been overlooked as birefringent materials, because they are usually not stable in air. Now, the first peroxide birefringent material Rb 2 VO(O 2 ) 2 F is reported, the single crystals of which keep transparency after being exposed in the air for two weeks. Interestingly, Rb 2 VO(O 2 ) 2 F does not feature an optimal anisotropic structure, but its birefringence (Δn=0.189 at 546 nm) exceeds those of the majority of oxides. According to the first-principles calculations, this exceptional birefringence should be attributed to the strong electronic interactions between localized π orbital of O 2 2− anions and V 5+ 3d orbitals, which may be also favorable to the stability in the air for Rb 2 VO(O 2 ) 2 F. These findings distinguish peroxides as a brand-new class of birefringent materials that may possess birefringence superior to the traditional oxides. Graphical Birefringent materials , which can modulate the polarization of light, are almost exclusively limited to oxides. Now, a peroxide birefringent material, Rb 2 VO(O 2 ) 2 F, is reported. The hypoglycemic effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of combining two dietary compounds, quercetin (Que) and d-chiro-inositol (DCI) on hepatic insulin resistance in C57BL/6J mice that were fed a high fat diet and saturated palmitic acid (PA)-treated hepatocytes were studied. Catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) are important antioxidant enzymes . Insufficient secretion of these enzymes will inhibit the normal phosphorylation of insulin receptors in the liver, thereby limiting the transmission of insulin signals and producing insulin resistance. The results showed that QD (both Que and DCI) led to the recovery of the activity of CAT, SOD, GPx, suggesting that QD was helpful in preventing mice hepatic insulin resistance. In PA-induced human hepatoma cells (HepG2), QD improved the antioxidant level in cells. The fluoro-immunoassay showed that QD effectively reduced the translocation of protein kinase Cε to cell membranes in the HepG2. Western blotting results suggested that QD increased the signal transduction in the IRS-2/PI3K/Akt/FoxO1 pathway. Overall, these results showed that the combination of 5 μmol Que and 5 μmol DCI ameliorated high fat diet-induced hepatic insulin resistance.

In this study, Ti 3 C 2 was delaminated into 2D single or few monolayers-thick nanomaterials (d-Ti 3 C 2 ) by DMSO intercalation and sonication method. Then, d-Ti 3 C 2 /polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films were prepared by solution casting process. The structures, thermal stabilities, thermal behaviors, and surface properties of the resulting materials were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Furthermore, the experimental results showed improvements in mechanical and thermal characteristics of d-Ti 3 C 2 /PVA films, as compared to those of pure PVA. The addition of d-Ti 3 C 2 had beneficial effects on the tensile strength , elongation at break, modulus of elasticity , thermal stability, and crystallinity of PVA matrix. With 0.5 wt% of d-Ti 3 C 2 , d-Ti 3 C 2 /PVA composite exhibited the best comprehensive properties.

Two-dimensional aluminophosphate is an important precursor of phosphate-based zeolites; a new Sun Yat-sen University No. 6 (SYSU-6) with |Hada|2[Al2(HPO4)(PO4)2] has been synthesized in the hydrothermal synthesis with organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) ofN,N,3,5-tetramethyladamantan-1-amine. In this paper, SYSU-6 is characterized by single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, infrared and UV Raman spectroscopy, solid-state27Al,31P and13C magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure indicates that SYSU-6 crystallized in the space groupP21/n, with a = 8.4119(3), b = 36.9876(12), c = 12.5674(3), α = 90°, β = 108.6770(10)°, γ = 90°, V = 3704.3(2) Å3, Z = 4, R = 5.12%, for 8515 observed data (I > 2σ(I)). The structure has a new 4,12-ring layer framework topology linked by alternating AlO4and PO4tetrahedra. The organic molecules reside between the layers and are hydrogen-bonded to the inorganic framework. The new type of layer provides a greater opportunity to construct zeolite with novel topology.Keywords:aluminophosphate;2-D zeolite;SYSU-6

Multi-drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections necessitate novel antibiotic development. D-3263, a transient receptor potential melastatin member 8 (TRPM8) agonist, has potential antineoplastic properties. Here, we reported the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of D-3263. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against S. aureus , Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium were ≤ 50 µM. D-3263 exhibited bactericidal effects against clinical methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and E. faecalis strains at 4× MIC. Subinhibitory D-3263 concentrations effectively inhibited S. aureus and E. faecalis biofilms, with higher concentrations also clearing mature biofilms. Proteomic analysis revealed differential expression of 29 proteins under 1/2 × MIC D-3263, influencing amino acid biosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism. Additionally, D-3263 enhanced membrane permeability of S. aureus and E. faecalis . Bacterial membrane phospholipids phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and cardiolipin (CL) dose-dependently increased D-3263 MICs. Overall, our data suggested that D-3263 exhibited potent antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against S. aureus by targeting the cell membrane.

While high-entropy alloys, high-entropy oxides, and high-entropy hydroxides, are advanced as a novel frontier in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution, their inherent activity deficiency poses a major challenge. To achieve the unlimited goal to tailor the structure–activity relationship in multicomponent systems, entropy-driven composition engineering presents substantial potential, by fabricating high-entropy anion-regulated transition metal compounds as sophisticated oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. Herein, a versatile 2D high-entropy metal phosphorus trisulfide is developed as a promising and adjustable platform. Leveraging the multiple electron couplings and d–p orbital hybridizations induced by the cocktail effect, the exceptional oxygen evolution catalytic activity is disclosed upon van der Waals material (MnFeCoNiZn)PS 3 , exhibiting an impressively low overpotential of 240 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a minimal Tafel slope of 32 mV dec −1 , and negligible degradation under varying current densities for over 96 h. Density functional theory calculations further offer insights into the correlation between orbital hybridization and catalytic performance within high-entropy systems, underscoring the contribution of active phosphorus centers on the substrate to performance enhancements. Moreover, by achieving electron redistribution to optimize the electron coordination environment, this work presents an effective strategy for advanced catalysts in energy-related applications.

D-tetramethrin is a common insecticide that is important for the control of mosquito-transmitted diseases such as malaria and dengue and, due to its widespread use, it is frequently detected in environmental systems. However, there is currently very little information on the influence of D-tetramethrin on non-target organisms. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to various concentrations of D-tetramethrin (0, 3, 6, and 9 mg/L) from 6 to 72 h past fertilization (hpf) to ascertain the influence of D-tetramethrin on the zebrafish immune system and development. We found that D-tetramethrin exposure led to a significant decrease in heart rate, an increase in the yolk area and tail flick frequency, and a shortening of body length in zebrafish larvae, compared with the control group. The number of macrophages and neutrophils in the experimental group of zebrafish larvae decreased significantly and the oxidative stress levels increased compared with the control group. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content and reactive oxygen species (ROS) content increased significantly, while catalase (CAT) activity increased and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased in the experimental group. At the same time, apoptosis increased in the zebrafish embryo cells, and the expression of apoptosis-related genes such as p53 , Bax , and Bcl-2 was abnormal. Moreover, the pro-inflammatory genes IL-8 , IFN-γ , IL-6 , and TNF-α were up-regulated, while the anti-inflammatory gene, IL-10 , was down-regulated. Therefore, D-tetramethrin significantly affects the immune system and oxidative stress levels in zebrafish, inducing cell apoptosis and negatively affecting embryo development. These results provide novel data for the toxicity of D-tetramethrin and the potential adverse effects of environment residues.

As an advanced mode of coaxial 3D printing, its outer layer can be designed to shape a soft 2D inner core to a strong stereoscopic structure. Here, we used oil-based Pickering emulsions stabilized by starch nanoparticle as the inner core, with carrageenan gel as the outer layer. Emulsion cores with different rheological properties greatly influence the overall printability (especially 70% oil content), which have been complemented by fluid dynamics simulation of pressure and velocity distributions (at the ratio of inner core to outer layer of 2:3). Vitamin D (V D ) was used as a functional additive embedded into different emulsions of inner cores and protected both by the inner and the outer layers. Particle size and stability analyses demonstrated that emulsions loaded with V D (even higher than 90% with the protection of outer layer after 15 days) still had a stabilized system.

During the production and transportation of natural gas, hydrate formation and accumulation in pipelines can lead to blockages, resulting in gas leakage, economic losses, and safety hazards. Recently, the development of superhydrophobic antigas hydrate coatings for pipelines has been identified as an effective strategy to mitigate pipeline plugging. Although superhydrophobic surfaces can effectively reduce the adhesion strength of hydrates to the wall, they tend to promote surface gas enrichment and water molecule ordering, thereby accelerating hydrate nucleation and growth. Furthermore, the microstructure of superhydrophobic surfaces is relatively fragile and susceptible to damage, which limits their long-term stability and reliability. This study proposes a hydrophilic gel coating, Zr4+/DMSO-Gel, which can delay the nucleation induction period of methane hydrates on solid surfaces and reduce their growth rate. Microscopic observations revealed that the coating induced partial decomposition of methane hydrate, resulting in the formation of a large water layer, which can reduce wall adhesion. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy was employed to analyze the structure of surface water molecules, revealing the mechanism by which the coating inhibits hydrate formation. The results showed that strong hydrogen bonding interactions between the coating surface and water molecules resulted in the predominance of bound water (BW) on the surface, while the proportion of tetra-coordinated hydrogen-bonded water (4-HBW) was reduced, thereby inhibiting the formation of hydrate cage structures. These findings not only provide a novel approach for the development of hydrate-resistant coatings but also offer new insights into antiplugging strategies for natural gas pipelines.

2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic (2,4-D) acid and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA), as widely utilized organochlorine pesticides , are normally detected in wastewater and atmosphere. Their harmfulness to the ecosystem cannot be ignored. UV/H 2 O 2 is one of the most conventional advanced oxidation processes, which has remarkable advantages for the removal of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater. However, the reaction mechanisms and pathways of pollutants with reactive radicals are still unclear. In this study, the degradation efficacy and mechanisms during the photodegradation of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in UV/H 2 O 2 processes were investigated by experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that 2,4-D was more likely to be degraded by UV/H 2 O 2 treatment than UV photolysis alone. In contrast, 4-CPA can be degraded effectively and rapidly under UV irradiation alone. By LC-MS analysis, the degradation products of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in the UV/H 2 O 2 processes were identified and they were produced by hydroxylation and photolysis. Therefore, we speculated a competition mechanism presented between direct photolysis and indirect photolysis in the UV/H 2 O 2 degradation of 2,4-D and 4-CPA. The OH-initiated reaction mechanisms of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in aqueous environments were investigated using quantum chemical methods SMD/M06–2X/6–311++G (3df, 2p)//SMD/M06–2X/6-311 + G (d,p). The pH dependence of the reaction mechanisms and rate constants in their degradation process induced by ·OH was also investigated. The calculation results showed that the ionic forms (2,4-D - and 4-CPA - ) were more prone to react with ·OH in comparison to the corresponding molecular forms (2,4-D and 4-CPA). The total rate constants of 2,4-D and 4-CPA with OH increased with the pH from 1 to 10, and decreased with continued pH increase. The toxicities of 2,4-D, 4-CPA and their products were assessed by the QSAR-based toxicity evaluation software. The results showed that several products were more toxic than their parent compounds, such as 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorocatechol, 4-chlorophenol and hydroquinone . This work can contribute to clarifying the environmental risks of 2,4-D and 4-CPA and offer a complete understanding for the photodegradation behavior of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in aqueous ecosystems.

Numerous studies have investigated the immunomodulatory effects of yogurt, but the underlying mechanism remained elusive. This study aimed to elucidate the alleviating properties of yogurt on immunosuppression and proposed the underlying mechanism was related to the metabolite D-lactate. In the healthy mice, we validated the safety of daily yogurt consumption (600 μL) or D-lactate (300 mg/kg). In immunosuppressed mice induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX), we evaluated the immune regulation of yogurt and D-lactate. The result showed that yogurt restored body weight, boosted immune organ index, repaired splenic tissue, recovered the severity of delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions and increased serum cytokines (IgA, IgG, IL-6, IFN-γ). Additionally, yogurt enhanced intestinal immune function by restoring the intestinal barrier and upregulating the abundance of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. Further studies showed that D-lactate alleviated immunosuppression in mice mainly by promoting cellular immunity. D-lactate recovered body weight and organ development, elevated serum cytokines (IgA, IgG, IL-6, IFN-γ), enhanced splenic lymphocyte proliferation and increased the mRNA level of T-bet in splenic lymphocyte to bolster Th1 differentiation. Finally, CTX is a chemotherapeutic drug, thus, the application of yogurt and D-lactate in the tumor-bearing mouse model was initially explored. The results showed that both yogurt (600 μL) and D-lactate (300 mg/kg) reduced cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression without promoting tumor growth. Overall, this study evaluated the safety, immune efficacy and applicability of yogurt and D-lactate in regulating immunosuppression. It emphasized the potential of yogurt as a functional food for immune regulation, with D-lactate playing a crucial role in its immunomodulatory effects.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death, is closely associated with tubular damage in diabetic nephropathy (DN). Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is an important anti-oxidant enzyme, and plays a crucial role in protecting against ferroptosis. However, the regulatory mechanism of GPX4 expression levels in renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) remains elusive. This study reveals that ferroptosis occurs in the late-stage of DN, and the GPX4 level is significantly downregulated in DN patients, animal models and cell models. By applying database predictions, luciferase reporter assays and chromatin immunoprecipitation, we find that vitamin D receptor (VDR) transcription factor promotes GPX4 expression and plays a key role in inhibiting ferroptosis of RTECs. VDR knockout exacerbates ferroptosis in RTECs and worsens renal function, while intraperitoneal injection of VDR agonist paricalcitol significantly improves renal injury. Proteomics analysis suggests that E3 ligase PRPF19 mediates ubiquitination degradation of VDR and is an important therapeutic target for DN. Therefore, through molecular docking, targeted fishing technology using high-performance affinity beads, and surface plasmon resonance (SPR), we screen and identify berberine (BBR) as a novel inhibitor of PRPF19, which offers renal protection by inhibiting VDR degradation and tubular ferroptosis. These findings elucidate the role of ferroptosis in DN renal tubular injury, and suggest that PRPF19 is a promising therapeutic target.
