Afterglow and mechanoluminescent properties of a novel cyan long-persistent luminescence phosphor Ba6BO3Cl9: Eu2+, Er3+

Caixiang Gou,Wei Zeng,Wenxiao Chen,Mengdi Mei,Haoyang Wu,Shiye Qian,Jile Wang

A new cyan long-persistent luminescence phosphor, Ba 6 BO 3 Cl 9 : Eu 2+ , Er 3+ , was synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction. The thermoluminescence and afterglow properties of the phosphor were significantly improved by the co-doping of Er 3+ . The Ba 6 BO 3 Cl 9 : Eu 2+ , Er 3+ phosphor exhibited an emission peak in the range of 400–700 nm, centered at 472 nm under 355 nm excitation, which was attributed to the 4f 6 5d 1 -4f 7 transition of Eu 2+ . At the optimal doping concentration, the initial afterglow brightness of the Ba 6 BO 3 Cl 9 : 0.1% Eu 2+ , 0.1% Er 3+ sample reached 0.1 cd/m 2 , and the afterglow lasted for more than 1.3 h. In addition, the synthesized Ba 6 BO 3 Cl 9 : 0.1% Eu 2+ , 0.1% Er 3+ /polydimethylsiloxane composite elastomer exhibited a mechanoluminescent property.

Tunable Excitation Polarized Upconversion Luminescence and Reconfigurable Double Anti-Counterfeiting from Er3+ Doped Single Nanorods

Dongping Wen,Shanling Zuo,Chunfeng Huang,Zongqian Tan,Fuxi Lu,Yi Liang,Xiaoming Mo,Tao Lin,Sheng Cao,Jianrong Qiu,Jialong Zhao,Ping Chen

Excitation polarized upconversion luminescence (EPUL) from lanthanide ions has attracted considerable attention due to its wide applications in microfluidics, single particle tracking, security inks, and cell internal viscosity testing. However, controlling the degree of excitation polarization (DOEP) of the EPUL remains a significant challenge. Here, the modulation of the DOEP (from 0 to 0.5) of the EPUL from Er 3+ doped single nanorods by changing the concentration of doped Er 3+ , Yb 3+ , or Mn 2+ is systematically studied. By analyzing the lifetimes and disproportionate changes in luminescence intensities, it is found that optimizing Er 3+ , Yb 3+ , or Mn 2+ concentration can reduce non-radiative transition and population density in excited states, leading to the enhancement of the DOEP under a good alignment of transition dipoles. Furthermore, the possibility of anti-counterfeiting based on such tunable EPUL is illustrated. Three kinds of fine patterns with a small size of 10 µm are realized by assembling the single nanorods accurately via optical tweezers. The patterns and their EPUL guarantee double protection for the feasibility of anti-counterfeiting. The findings of this study offer insights into the EPUL from lanthanide ions and provide a microscale platform via the EPUL for the application of multidimensional information encoding and reconfigurable double anti-counterfeiting.

Hua-Wei Deng,Di-Hu Chen

Multifunctional luminescent materials are attracting attention nowadays. In this work, monoclinic Gd2O3:Er3+ nanoparticles, which possess up-conversion luminescence and down-conversion luminescence properties, were successfully synthesized by laser ablation in liquid (LAL) technique. Up-conversion luminescence and down-conversion luminescence of monoclinic Gd2O3:Er3+ nanoparticles were got under the excitation of 980 nm and 379 nm, respectively. In addition, tunable luminescence was got. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles is low and the fluorescence of the nanoparticles in cell is also strong enough. The results indicate that the Gd2O3:Er3+ nanoparticles synthesized by LAL technique are promising candidates for bio-imaging or other fields that require controllable fluorescence.

Improving luminescence and thermometric performance of Ba2CaWO6:Er3+ by tri-doping with Yb3+ and Na+

Lingyun Li,Ziwei Zhou,Fazheng Huang,Senlin Peng,Yantang Huang,Guoqiang Wang,Xinxu Li,Fei-Fei Chen,Chengkai Yang,Xin-Xiong Li,Yan Yu

The Er 3+ doped double perovskite Ba 2 CaWO 6 crystal is a promising ratiometric thermometer based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of transitions from 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 to the lowered 4 I 15/2 level. However, the Ca 2+ vacancy defect caused by the charge difference between rare-earth ions and the substituted alkaline-earth ions gives rise to the non-radiative probability and limits the thermal sensitivity. Here, the up-conversion luminescence and thermometric performance of Er 3+ , Yb 3+ doped Ba 2 CaWO 6 are tuned by tri-doping with alkaline ions. The Ca 2+ vacancy defect can be eliminated by the introduction of Na + , which occupies the Ca 2+ site when it is doped into Ba 2 CaWO 6 with Er 3+ and Yb 3+ . On the contrary, the doping of Cs +  into Ba 2 CaWO 6 with Er 3+ and Yb 3+ enhances the defect concentration because it occupies the site of Ba 2+ . Thus, the tri-doping of Na + reduces the non-radiative probability and enhances the quantum efficiency of Er 3+ , leading to the improvement of the thermometric sensitivity of Ba 2 CaWO 6 . As a result, we get an excellent thermometric Ba 2 CaWO 6 :8%Yb 3+ ,3.5%Er 3+ ,6%Na + powder with a luminescence lifetime of 515 μs and maximum thermal sensitivity ( S r ) of 1.45%/K, which is more than three times higher than that of the BCWO:Er 3+ powder.

Zhao Feng,Chu Yunting,Zhao Qianyun,Zhang Weiwei,Sun Jingchang,Li Chengren

A series of CaSrSiO 4 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ , x Ag phosphors have been prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that more small spherical particles gather together to form bigger cluster when Ag nanoparticles are co-doped into CaSrSiO 4 : 9Yb 3+ , 1Er 3+ nanophosphor. Photoluminescence intensities of samples co-doped Ag nanoparticles enhance significantly and the optimized Ag concentration is 0.6 mol%. The fluorescence intensity ratio, the absolute sensitivity, relative sensitivity and temperature resolution are measured, computed and discussed in the range of 303–703 K. The results show that all sensing performances of CaSrSiO 4 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ , 0.6Ag phosphor are superior to these of the sample un-doped Ag particles and the maximum S A value can go up to 7.3 × 10 –3  K −1 , indicating that CaSrSiO 4 : 9Yb 3+ , 1Er 3+ , 0.6Ag designed and prepared in this work is a promising optical high-temperature sensing material and it is appropriate to practical application in comprehensive fields.

Au Nanorods@NaGdF4/Yb3+,Er3+ Multifunctional Hybrid Nanocomposites with Upconversion Luminescence, Magnetism, and Photothermal Property

Yan Song,Guixia Liu,Xiangting Dong,Jinxian Wang,Wensheng Yu,Jingmei Li

Multifunctional nanomaterials possessing upconversion luminescence, magnetic, and photothermal properties show promising applications in biology and medicine. In this study, a new kind of luminescent-magnetic-thermal core–shell hybrid nanocomposite was fabricated combining rare earth Yb3+ and Er3+ ions doped NaGdF4 nanocrystals as shell layer materials and gold nanorods (AuNRs) as cores. The structure, morphology, composition, and properties of the multifunctional hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, upconversion photoluminescence spectra, vibrating sample magnetometer, sensitive thermometer, and cytotoxicity assessment, respectively. The multifunctional hybrid nanocomposites have rodlike morphology and core–shell structure. The uniform NaGdF4/Yb3+,Er3+ shell with a thickness of around 4.5 nm was coated on the surface of AuNRs with a length of 40 nm and a diameter of 12 nm. The AuNRs@NaGdF4/Yb3+,Er3+ multifunctional nanocomposites provide an excellent upconversion emission under excitation at 980 nm and a superparamagnetic behavior with magnetic susceptibility of 8.0 × 10–5 emu·g–1·Oe–1 at 300 K and saturation magnetization value of 102 emu·g–1 at 2 K. More significantly, when AuNRs@NaGdF4/Yb3+,Er3+ aqueous suspensions of 100 μg·mL–1 were irradiated by a 980 nm NIR laser for 10 min, the temperature was significantly elevated to 48 °C. At the same time, the temperature of photothermal transduction can be easily controlled by adjusting the concentration of nanocomposites. Preliminary investigation of incubating with HeLa cells displays that the multifunctional nanocomposites exhibit a good biocompatibility. Moreover, the nanocomposites may be effectively utilized for bioimaging and photothermal therapy in living cells.

Multiple Temperature-Sensing Behavior of Green and Red Upconversion Emissions from Stark Sublevels of Er3+

Baosheng Cao,Jinlei Wu,Xuehan Wang,Yangyang He,Zhiqing Feng,Bin Dong

Upconversion luminescence properties from the emissions of Stark sublevels of Er3+were investigated in Er3+-Yb3+-Mo6+-codoped TiO2phosphors in this study. According to the energy levels split from Er3+, green and red emissions from the transitions of four coupled energy levels,2H11/2(I)/2H11/2(II),4S3/2(I)/4S3/2(II),4F9/2(I)/4F9/2(II), and2H11/2(I)+2H11/2(II)/4S3/2(I)+4S3/2(II), were observed under 976 nm laser diode excitation. By utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, temperature-dependent upconversion emissions from these four coupled energy levels were analyzed at length. The optical temperature-sensing behaviors of sensing sensitivity, measurement error, and operating temperature for the four coupled energy levels are discussed, all of which are closely related to the energy gap of the coupled energy levels, FIR value, and luminescence intensity. Experimental results suggest that Er3+-Yb3+-Mo6+-codoped TiO2phosphor with four pairs of energy levels coupled by Stark sublevels provides a new and effective route to realize multiple optical temperature-sensing through a wide range of temperatures in an independent system. Keywords:temperature sensing;upconversion emissions;Stark sublevel;rare earth;sensitivity

Realization of 1.54-µm Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Er3+/Yb3+Co-Doped CsPbCl3 Films

Hongfei Li,Xiaoqi Liu,Donglei Zhou,Biao Dong,Lin Xu,Xue Bai,Hongwei Song

Erbium ions (Er 3+ , 1.54 µm) electric pumped light sources with excellent optical properties and a simple fabrication process are urgently desired to satisfy the development of silicon-based integration photonics. The previous Er-based electroluminescence devices are mainly based on Er-complexes or Er-doped oxide compounds, which usually suffer from low external quantum efficiency(EQE)or high applied voltage etc. In this work, a novel type of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped lead-halide perovskite films (Er 3+ /Yb 3+ :CsPbCl 3 ) with the maximum photoluminescence quantum yield of 30.12% are prepared by a simple two-step solution-coating method and the corresponding light emitting diodes (Er-PeLEDs) are fabricated, which demonstrate an almost pure 1.54-µm emission and a peak EQE up to 0.366% at a low applied voltage of 1.4 V. Strong negative thermal quenching effect may help Er-PeLEDs suppress Joule heating quenching. These excellent LED properties benefit mainly from the outstanding regulatory performance of acetate to perovskite films, the excellent semiconductor behavior and strong ionic property of the perovskite, and the involvement of Yb 3+ ions, which can directly and efficiently transfer the exciton energy to Er 3+ through a quantum cutting process. Overall, the realization of 1.54-µm Er-PeLEDs offers new opportunities for silicon-based integrated light sources.

Er3+/Tm3+ co-activated core@shell nanoarchitectures: tunable upconversion luminescence and high-security anti-counterfeiting

Xuan Liu,Xiaojia Su,Zhuohang Ren,Lingqiu Yang,Xinyue Zhang,Mingye Ding

Currently, developing advanced optoelectronic materials is of great importance to solving serious problem of fake and shoddy products. Lanthanide-doped nanomaterials are particularly suitable for addressing this issue, but limited by the realization of multiple upconverison (UC) emissions upon a single-wavelength laser excitation. Herein, it is proven that the co-dopant of blue/near-infrared (NIR)-emitting activators (Tm 3+ ) and green/red-emitting centers (Er 3+ ) in a particular designed core–shell nanoarchitecture allows the achievement of multiple luminescence over wide spectral region for optical security. In our study, cubic-phased NaYbF 4 :Tm/Er@CaF 2 nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized through a layer-by-layer coprecipitation strategy, which presents visible multicolor UC luminescence and invisible NIR UC emission upon 980 nm laser excitation by just regulating the laser power and temperature. Significantly, the unique luminescent characteristics enables the designed UC nanoparticles a promising candidate for advanced anti-counterfeiting. This works offers a reference to develop advanced optoelectronic materials for practical application in optical security.

Upconversion emission and the emission color modulation of the NaMgF3:Er3+, Yb3+, Mn2+ submicron particles

Li Xin,He Yu,Guo Yangyang,Mao Huibing,Chen Ye,Wang Jiqing

The Er 3+ , Yb 3+ and Mn 2+ co-doped perovskite NaMgF 3 submicron particles have been successfully fabricated and the related upconversion (UC) emission was investigated in this paper. The UC emission spectra confirm that the emission color of the Er 3+ ions can be modulated by the doping of the Mn 2+ ions, the incident laser power and the laser pulse-width. The UC emission results demonstrate that the key factor to modulate the UC emission color of the Er 3+ ions is the Mn 2+ ions in the submicron particles, in which the NaMgF 3 submicron particles have the largest relative green emission bands with the 3% Mn 2+ concentration. The experimental results also confirm that the UC intensities ratio of the green to the red emission will increase with the increase of the incident laser power and the decrease of the laser pulse-width. All the UC emission results imply that there are two energy transfer paths from the Mn 2+ state 4 T 1 to the Er 3+ ions, in which the transfer rate to the state 4 S 3/2 is far larger than the transfer rate to the state 2 H 11/2 and the energy transfer mechanism may related with the special structure of the Mn 2+ ions and the phonon-assisted processes.

Reengineering the thermometric behaviors of Er3+/Yb3+-codoped Gd2Mo3O12 microparticles via dual-mode luminescence manipulation

Hao Gou,Qian Wu,Laihui Luo,Weiping Li,Peng Du

Series of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -codoped Gd 2 Mo 3 O 12 (GMO:Er 3+ /2 x Yb 3+ ) microparticles with dual-mode luminescence were fabricated with the assistance of sol-gel method. The phase structure, morphological information, upconversion (UC) and down-shifting luminescence properties of the final products were systematically investigated. At 980 nm light irradiation, strong UC emissions rise in all the products and their intensities depend on the dopant concentration, where the optimum status occurs at x  = 0.25 and the two-photon capture procedure results in the UC emission mechanism. Besides, excited at 378 nm, the down-shifting photoluminescence is also gained in resulting samples. By means of the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, the thermometric properties of the studied samples were investigated through analyzing the diverse thermal quenching features of the green emissions from thermally coupled levels of Er 3+ . When the UC emission is selected, the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of the GMO:Er 3+ /2 x Yb 3+ microparticles are 0.0076 and 1.15% K −1 , respectively, whereas they shift to 0.0036 and 0.89% K −1 , respectively, when the down-shifting photoluminescence is adopted. Note that, the sensor sensitivities of developed microparticles are related to the luminescence mode, while they do not depend on Yb 3+ content. These results suggest that the GMO:Er 3+ /2 x Yb 3+ microparticles are promising thermosensitive luminescent materials for optical thermometry and their thermometric features can be tuned through changing luminescence mode.

NIR-II Upconversion Photoluminescence of Er3+ Doped LiYF4 and NaY(Gd)F4 Core-Shell Nanoparticles

Feng Qilong,Zheng Wenjing,Pu Jie,Chen Qiaoli,Shao Wei

The availability of colloidal nano-materials with high efficiency, stability, and non-toxicity in the near infrared-II range is beneficial for biological diagnosis and therapy. Rare earth doped nanoparticles are ideal luminescent agents for bio-applications in the near infrared-II range due to the abundant energy level distribution. Among them, both excitation and emission range of Er3+ ions can be tuned into second biological window range. Herein, we report the synthesis of ∼15 nm LiYF4, NaYF4, and NaGdF4 nanoparticles doped with Er3+ ions and their core-shell structures. The luminescent properties are compared, showing that Er3+ ions with single-doped LiYF4 and NaYF4 nanoparticles generate stronger luminescence than Er3+ ions with doped NaGdF4, despite the difference in relative intensity at different regions. By epitaxial growth an inert homogeneous protective layer, the surface luminescence of the core-shell structure is further enhanced by about 5.1 times, 6.5 times, and 167.7 times for LiYF4, NaYF4, and NaGdF4, respectively. The excellent luminescence in both visible and NIR range of these core-shell nanoparticles makes them potential candidate for bio-applications.
