Ca2+, Fe3+ co-crosslinked tannic acid-bridged sodium alginate gel membrane for organic solvent nanofiltration

Haike Li,Zhiyun Kong,Huan Zhang,Xiaolei Wang,Yaohua Xie,Xingqing Zhao,Yidan Hong

It is necessary to prepare a nanofiltration membrane with high permeation flux that can be used in the field of organic solvents. Gel membranes have a high solvent permeation flux, but their chained macromolecular structure is often unstable. In this study, tannic acid-bridged sodium alginate (TA x -Ca/FeSA) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes were prepared by the phase transition method using aqueous Ca 2+ and Fe 3+ solutions as cross-linking agents. TA can interact with SA through hydrogen bonding hydrophobic bonding and other interactions to form an interpenetrating three-dimensional network structure. Compared with Ca/FeSA membrane, the average pore size of TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was reduced from 1.03 nm to 0.74 nm, and the porosity was increased from 47.62 to 59.2 %. In addition, the TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane has the characteristics of a negative charge, super hydrophilicity, and high mechanical properties, exhibits a high permeation flux of 48.97 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 with a rejection of 96.25 % for Congo red ethanol solution, has excellent solvent resistance, stain resistance, and self-cleaning ability. The TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was demonstrated to have great potential for application in the fields of purification and solvent recovery.

Enhanced PMS activation and NSAID degradation selectivity by hydrophobic microenvironment regulation on Fe3+@Cu-MOF

Xi Quan,Jun Zhang,Linlin Yin,Yu Tian

In this study, the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and selective degradation of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were investigated using hydrophobically modified Fe 3+ @Cu-MOF. The Fe 3+ @Cu-MOF-CTAB/PMS system demonstrated high-efficiency, achieving near-complete degradation of diclofenac within 120 min. The degradation rate constants for diclofenac, ibuprofen, and naproxen were 0.0048, 0.00103, and 0.00046 min −1 , respectively, positively correlated with their hydrophobicity. Longer hydrophobic surfactant chains in Fe 3+ @Cu-MOFs lead to greater initial adsorption of diclofenac, enhancing degradation efficiency upon the introduction of PMS. The Fe 3+ @Cu-MOF-CTAB/PMS system removes over 80 % of diclofenac in various water matrices, showing optimal efficiency in acidic environments but reduced effectiveness with competing anions. Post-degradation changes in the oxidation states of copper and iron in the MOF structure indicated a synergistic redox mechanism essential for PMS activation. The hydroxylation and C-N bond cleavage in diclofenac were key degradation pathways. This study highlights the potential of hydrophobically modified Fe 3+ @Cu-MOFs in water treatment, providing insights into the interplay between material design, hydrophobic interactions, and catalytic performance.

g-C3N4 Enhanced Fe3+/ Fe2+ Cycling to Activate PMS for Pharmaceuticals Degradation Under Solar Irradiation

Cheng Liu,Zhu Zhexin,Wang Gangqiang,Du Shiting

Since Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is readily available and can produce sulfate radicals with a stronger oxidation capacity, the Fenton-like system Fe 2+ /PMS has gradually replaced Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 system in organic pollutants degradation. However, the Fe 3+ /PMS system has almost no degradation effects, with the conversion of Fe 2+ to Fe 3+ being the rate-limiting step in the Fe 3+ /PMS system. In this paper, graphite-like phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) was employed to activate PMS using trace amounts of Fe 3+ for the treatment of water pollution under sunlight, and the Fe 3+ /g-C 3 N 4 /PMS system demonstrated the ability to rapidly degrade a wide range of difficult-to-degrade organic pollutants. The Fe 3+ /g-C 3 N 4 /PMS system was able to completely degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) within 30 min under sunlight. The fundings indicated that this system effectively improved the stringent limitations typically associated with Fenton process regarding the feed ratio of metal ions to oxidants, and could efficiently degrade CBZ across a broad pH range. In addition, the Fe 3+ concentration of 6.17 × 10 −6 M was used in the experiments to avoid the generation of large amounts of “iron sludge”. The trap burst experiments, DMSO oxidation experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments indicated that O 2 · − and 1 O 2 exerted the major effectiveness in the photocatalytic degradation reaction of CBZ, and SO 4 · − and · OH jointly promoted the CBZ degradation. Glutathione-Responsive Nanoplatforms Based on Coordination between Fe3+ and Apigenin for Synergistic Chemo/Chemodynamic Therapy

Zhi-Hang He,Han-Xiao Tang,Yan-Zheng Pan,Min Cen,Zhi-Juan Zhang

The oxygen consumption during chemodynamic therapy (CDT) can lead to severe cellular hypoxia, resulting in an increase in the hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) level, which hinders the effectiveness of CDT and induces tumor metastasis. Here, we propose a strategy of synergistic therapy between CDT and the HIF-1α inhibitor to avoid the limitations of CDT and reduce the risk of metastasis. Herein, based on the coordination between Fe3+ and apigenin (API, HIF-1α inhibitor), we constructed a hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified API-Fe nanoparticles (AF@HA NPs) for synergetic chemotherapy and glutathione (GSH)-activated self-enhancing CDT. AF@HA NPs have high drug loading capacity, stability, and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the overexpressed GSH in cancer cells can reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+, weakened the coordination between API and Fe, and promoted the release of API for chemotherapy. Fe2+ could react with endogenous H2O2 to generate hydroxyl groups for CDT. In addition, the released API could inhibit the expression of HIF-1α and increase the sensitivity of cells to reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby achieving a synergistic effect between self-enhancing CDT and chemotherapy. The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments indicated that AF@HA NPs could effectively inhibit tumor growth and suppress the lung metastasis of tumor cells.

N-doped carbon dots for the determination of Al3+ and Fe3+ using aggregation-induced emission

Yang Dou,Shao Tong,Wang Xiaoshuang,Hong Min,Li Rui,Li Chenzhong,Yue Qiaoli

New portable hydrogel sensors for Al 3+ and Fe 3+ detection were designed based on the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and color change of N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs). N-CDs with yellow fluorescence were prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method from 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid and acrylamide. The fluorescence of N-CDs was enhanced by Al 3+ about 20 times and quenched by Fe 3+ . It was interesting that although Fe 3+ showed obvious quenching on the fluorescence of N-CDs it did not cause a noticeable change in the fluorescence of N-CDs + Al 3+ . The colorless solution of N-CDs appeared blue in the presence of Fe 3+ without the influence of Al 3+ . Therefore, the turn-on fluorometry and colorimetry systems based on N-CDs were constructed for the simultaneous detection of Al 3+ and Fe 3+ . Furthermore, the portable sensing of Al 3+ and Fe 3+ was realized with the assistance of hydrogel, filter paper, cellulose acetate, and cellulose nitrate film. The proposed approach was successfully applied to the detection of Al 3+ and Fe 3+ in food samples and cell imaging. Graphical Abstract

Fe3+/tannic acid assisted preparation of dynamic assembled hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane with salt tolerance

Liu Ye,Xuyang Liu,Yingbo Chen,Linzhe Xu,Shuang Fu,Xintong Wu

In this study, a hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane with excellent salt tolerance and anti-fouling properties was successfully prepared by Fe 3+ /tannic acid (TA) assisted dynamic assembly technology. The results showed that when the concentration of Fe 3+ and TA was 0.1   g·L -1 , the rejection rate of Na 2 SO 4 was 91.34%, and the permeability was 12.44   L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 . The salt tolerance test showed that the rejection rate did not change significantly in the range of 1-5   g·L -1 Na 2 SO 4 concentration. The rejection rate of the membrane to 5   g·L -1 Na 2 SO 4 solution was 85.22%, thanking to the strong binding force between the Fe 3+ -TA coordination bonds. The high hydrophilicity of the coating layer and the dense structure of the Fe 3+ -TA coordination network significantly reduced the irreversible adsorption of pollutants, which provided the membrane with stable permeability after three times of fouling-cleaning cycles with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) as model pollutants. The dense network structure formed by dynamic assembly assisted with Fe 3+ -TA coordination was the key to the high rejection and salt tolerance of the membrane, which provided a new strategy for the development of high-performance nanofiltration membranes for high-salt wastewater treatment in practical applications.

An ultrasensitive optical fiber SPR sensor enhanced by functionalized carbon quantum dots for Fe3+ measurement

Youquan Zhou,Xiaoyu Huang,Binyun Xia,Xiaohan Chen,Xinyue Jing,Ning Wang,Jinhua Li

Precise detection of ferric ions (Fe 3+ ) plays a critical role in maintaining biological homeostasis, ensuring industrial process quality control, and safeguarding ecological safety. Recently, various detection methods and sensors have been widely developed for measuring Fe 3+ , but the tradeoff between their performance and practical applications has not been achieved, such as high sensitivity, excellent specificity, simple structure and fabrication, low cost, and so on. In this study, an optical fiber SPR sensor was developed sensor for detecting Fe 3+ based on the multimode-coreless-multimode (MNM) structured optical fiber. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the MNM fiber coated with a 60 nm Au film modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) reached 3440.45 nm/RIU. The organic groups functionalized carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized and immobilized onto the Au substrates for specifically trapping Fe 3+ , which will cause the variation of the effective RI around the fiber, thereby resulting in the SPR wavelength shift in the transmission spectrum. By recording the red shift of the SPR wavelength, the amount of Fe 3+ could be accurately quantified. Upon detection of Fe 3+ , the sensor was demonstrated with great linearity within a wide detection range of 10 −12 to 10 −2 M. The sensor’s sensitivity was obtained to be about 2.07 nm/lg (M) and its limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be about 2.88 × 10 −13 M. It was also experimentally proved with excellent selectivity and stability, as well as the potential application in simulated real samples. The proposed sensing platform offered a simple configuration for Fe 3+ detection with excellent performance and had various potential practical applications such as health monitoring, disease diagnosis, dietary planning, medication treatment monitoring, environmental monitoring, etc.

Dual-Emission Ratiometric Fluorescent Probe Based on Lanthanide-Functionalized Carbon Quantum Dots for White Light Emission and Chemical Sensing

Ying Li,Ya-Qi Wang,Dan Liu,Yu Gao,Sai-Nan Wang,Hanxun Qiu

Herein, we develop a novel method to synthesize lanthanide-functionalized carbon quantum dots via free-radical copolymerization using the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer as a functional monomer and introducing a lanthanide complex to obtain the dual-emission fluorescent composite material FCQDs-Ln(TFA)3 (Ln = Eu, Tb; TFA: trifluoroacetylacetone). The obtained composites were fully characterized, and their structures were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Subsequently, a series of white-light-emitting polymer composite films FCQDs- (Eu:Tb)(TFA)3/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were designed and synthesized by adjusting the ratio of Eu(TFA)3/Tb(TFA)3 under different wavelengths. More significantly, FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 was selected as a sensitive probe for sensing metal cations due to excellent photoluminescence properties, revealing a unique capability of FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 of detecting Fe(III) cations with high efficiency and selectivity. Furthermore, the sensing experiment results indicated that FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 is ideal as a fluorescent nanoprobe for Fe3+ ion detection, and the lowest detection limit for Fe3+ is 0.158 μM, which is superior to many other previous related research studies. This pioneering work provides a new idea and method for constructing a dual-emission ratio sensor based on carbon quantum dots and also extends the potential application in the biological and environmental fields.

Exploring the efficacy and mechanism of tannic acid/Fe3+ conditioning for enhancing waste activated sludge dewaterability

Dongdong Ge,Jiamu Xiao,Chang Bian,Haiping Yuan,Nanwen Zhu

Waste activated sludge (WAS), as a kind of hydrophilic colloid substance, is still a major technical challenge in wastewater treatment industry. For enhancing WAS dewaterability, the approach of tannic acid (TA)/Fe 3+ conditioning was verified to be feasible. During conditioning, sludge extracellular protein decreased pronouncedly. Fluorescence quenching analysis revealed that Fe 3+ reduced the binding sites of extracellular polymeric substances available for TA, and the formed TA-Fe 3+ complexes possibly promoted TA aggregates’ settlement and compression. Sludge supernatant viscosity, absolute value of zeta potential and pH value also decreased distinctly, and sludge particle size became larger than that of raw sludge or Fe 3+ -conditioned sludge. Scanning electron microscope suggested that sludge surface morphology became more compacted and denser after TA/Fe 3+ conditioning, which was helpful for the release of water trapped in sludge bio-polymeric network. With 0.15 mmol/gTS TA and 0.9 mmol/gTS Fe 3+ conditioning, sludge capillary suction time, specific resistance of filtration and water content of dewatered sludge cake were decreased by 76.3%, 94.7% and 13.5%, respectively. The findings not only shed new light on the means of applying natural plant organic polymer coupled with inorganic cation to promote WAS dewaterability but offered a potentially theoretical principle of the utilization of plant waste containing TA in WAS treatment.

A fluorescent chemosensor for relay recognition of Fe3+ and PO43− in aqueous solution and its applications

Renjie Liu,Xu Tang,Yun Wang,Juan Han,Huiqin Zhang,Chen Li,Wenli Zhang,Liang Ni,Haoran Li

A novel fluorescent probe XDS based on 4-methylumbelliferone and 2-picolylamine platforms has been designed and synthesized, which behaves fast relay recognition of Fe 3+ and PO 4 3− via a fluorescence “on−off−on” response signal. Probe XDS exhibited very high sensitivity and unique selectivity for Fe 3+ over other common metal ions , and the detection limit of was 3.2 × 10 −7  M. Moreover, the addition of the PO 4 3− ions could cause the recovery of fluorescence. This relay recognition feature of probe XDS has potential applications in the determination of trace amount of Fe 3+ and PO 4 3− in environmental systems. Interestingly, fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated that the probe XDS can also be used to monitoring the intracellular Fe 3+ in RAMOS cells.

Forward osmosis membrane developed from the chelation of Fe3+ and carboxylate for trace organic contaminants removal

Xinfei Dong,Qing-Wei Meng,Wenxiu Hu,Rongzhen Chen,Qingchun Ge

Wastewater containing trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) is usually poorly purified by unmodified polyamide (PA) membrane due to its poor selectivity and low water permeability. Herein we design a series of carboxylate-functionalized PA membranes via the chelation of Fe 3+ and carboxylate for efficient TrOCs removal through forward osmosis (FO). Citric acid, oxalic acid and their sodium salts are individually tethered to the PA membrane in water under ambient conditions. Factors influencing membrane performance are systematically investigated. The carboxylate based modification greatly improves the membrane properties that substantially enhance its separation performance. The sodium citrate (CA-Na) modified membrane produces water fluxes of up to 106% (PRO mode) and 144% (FO mode) higher than those of the PA membrane. This membrane also increases the TrOCs rejection from 75% to over 92%, irrespective of the TrOCs properties. Membrane fouling experiments reveal that the water flux of the CA-Na membrane declines by 26%, while that of the PA membrane decreases by 38% after 10-h tests. The flux recovery ratio of the CA-Na membrane achieves over 95% after physical cleaning. This study demonstrates an eco-friendly protocol to construct PA-based membrane for efficient TrOCs removal.

Efficient recovery of waste hair keratin via L-Cys/MEA for selective separation of Fe3+/Li+

Zhuo Tan,Baoling Chu,Chenguang Wang,Jing Tian,Yi Nie,Hongshuai Gao

Efficient recovery and high-value utilization of keratin from waste human hair are of significant interest for sustainable materials development. However, the densely cross-linked disulfide bonds and extensive hydrogen-bond network of keratin make its mild and efficient extraction challenging. In this work, a redox-active deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of L-cysteine (L-Cys) and monoethanolamine (MEA) was developed for keratin recovery from waste human hair. Under optimized conditions of 80 °C, 3.5 h, and 10 wt% solid loading, the keratin recovery yield reached 96.5%, and the solvent maintained stable performance over five recycling cycles. Experimental results, together with DFT and MD simulations, indicate that the dissolution process is driven by synergistic disulfide bond cleavage and disruption of the hydrogen-bond network, while the protein backbone remains largely intact. The recovered keratin was further phosphorylated and co-regenerated with cellulose to fabricate a phosphorylated keratin/cellulose composite membrane (P-KCM). The membrane exhibited efficient and selective Fe 3+ adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 297.8 mg·g −1 . FT-IR and XPS analyses reveal that phosphate groups serve as the primary coordination sites for Fe 3+ . In tests with real LiFePO₄ leachate, P-KCM removed 97.3% of Fe 3+ while leaving 80.1% of Li + in solution, and it retained 84.7% of its initial adsorption capacity after four adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provides a mild, efficient, and recyclable strategy for keratin valorization and offers a feasible approach for selective metal ion separation and pre-treatment in battery recycling.
