The application of oil-water separation membranes is hindered by their poor thermal stability, limited permeability, and complex production processes. To overcome these limitations, this study developed a novel modified membrane by depositing GO@SiO 2 onto nylon microporous membranes using a facile one-step vacuum filtration method. The prepared membrane exhibited both superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Experimental results demonstrated that the membrane achieved high separation efficiency (> 99%), exceptional water flux (3015.8 L∙m − 2 ∙h − 1 ), and excellent antifouling properties (Oil Contact Angle max = 152°, low oil adhesion) for water-in-oil emulsions. Moreover, the membrane exhibited outstanding flame retardancy (LOI max =29%) and superior thermal stability. It showed higher thermal decomposition temperatures and significantly slower weight loss rates. This modified GO@SiO 2 membrane showed great potential for the industrial-scale treatment of oil-in-water emulsions. Importantly, the flame-retardant properties also made the membrane a promising candidate for offshore oil spill fire remediation.

Energy harvesting from acid-base neutralization through the reverse electrodialysis technique provides a sustainable route to recover the chemical potential inherent in industrial effluents, thereby preventing the dissipation of Gibbs free energy as thermal waste. However, conventional reverse electrodialysis relies on homogeneous charge-selective membranes, which induce severe concentration polarization and consequently result in low power densities. Herein, we report an asymmetric Janus graphene oxide/poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (GO-PDDA) composite membrane, featuring contrasting surface charges. This design facilitates directed H + /OH − translocation, which effectively suppresses polarization effects and promotes neutralization within the channels. Under a 1 M HCl/NaOH gradient, the GO-PDDA membrane delivered a peak power density of 265.92 W m −2 at an active area of 0.03 mm 2 and 16.87 W m −2 at 3.14 mm 2 , indicating promising performance for neutralization-energy harvesting. These results demonstrate that the asymmetric GO-PDDA membrane is a promising platform for recovering neutralization energy from acid/base waste streams and for advancing scalable nanofluidic energy-conversion technologies.

Cu(I) doped Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was loaded onto graphene oxide, Cu-Fe 3 O 4 /GO with binary active sites and accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle showed higher tetracycline hydrochloride oxidation efficiency than Fe 3 O 4 and Cu-Fe 3 O 4 , the influences of initial H 2 O 2 concentration, reaction pH, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature and radical scavengers on catalytic performance of Cu-Fe 3 O 4 /GO were investigated. The heterogeneous Fenton reaction over Cu-Fe 3 O 4 /GO surface contained Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I) active sites, Fe species were the dominant active centers. Cu-Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and GO combined via C–O–Fe bond and formed a stable Cu-Fe 3 O 4 /GO conductive structure, which promoted electrons transfer between Cu-Fe 3 O 4 and H 2 O 2 , thus accelerating Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I) cycles. GO significantly improved specific surface area, Cu-Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles dispersibility, and adsorption performance of catalyst. Furthermore, the strong interaction between GO and Cu-Fe 3 O 4 prevented ions from leach, GO captured the soluble Fe(III) which was efficiently reduced to Fe(II) surf by surrounding H 2 O 2 and Cu(I) surf . The degradation efficiency maintained 80.7% after six cycles, the excellent stability can be ascribed to the strong interaction between Cu-Fe 3 O 4 and GO. Reactive oxygen species scavenging results indicated that surface-bound • OH surf played a dominating role, followed by aqueous • OH aq and superoxide radicals (O 2 •− ).

Unraveling molecular transport behaviors in extremely confined two-dimensional (2D) nanochannels, especially the impact of sub-nanometer interlayer spacing, is essential for designing high-precision separation membranes. However, it remains a challenging issue due to the complex physical and chemical structures of conventional 2D lamellar membranes. Herein, vertically aligned graphene oxide (GO) membranes featuring stable and long-range nanochannels are constructed. Significantly, the interlayer spacing is precisely tuned from 0.76 to 0.98 nm by controlling relative humidity with saturated salt solutions. It is demonstrated that, for these GO membranes, organic solvent permeance generally increases monotonically with increasing interlayer spacing. In stark contrast, water transport exhibits an anomalous non-monotonic dependence, with a minimum permeance of 0.52 LMH bar −1 at a critical interlayer spacing of 0.87 nm, significantly lower than 4.35 and 3.46 LMH bar −1 at 0.81 and 0.92 nm, respectively. This phenomenon originates from the confinement-induced reconstruction of hydrogen-bond networks into an ice-like ordered structure at the critical spacing, which markedly elevates the diffusion energy barrier, thus leading to the lowest permeance. This work reveals the molecular transport behaviors under extreme confinement, providing novel theoretical insights into confined molecular transport.

Mimicking the structure of nacres with high filler contents and layered structures has been demonstrated to be a promising strategy to improve the mechanical properties of nanocomposites. However, in the fabrication of such nanocomposites, the incorporation of fillers at high contents often suffers from their agglomeration that remarkably limits their mechanical performances, which is difficult to avoid and evaluate. In this work, nanocomposites, mimicking the structure of nacres, have been prepared using high content graphene oxide (GO) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) hybrid fillers, where the incorporation of hBN suppresses the agglomeration of GO. This leads to superior mechanical properties of the hybrid nanocomposites than those reinforced with a single type of fillers, especially at high filler contents. Based on the three-phase rule of mixtures, a concept of ‘dispersion factor’ is proposed. A higher dispersion factor of GO is found in the hybrid nanocomposites than in the nanocomposites reinforced with just GO, demonstrating a higher level of GO dispersion and the suppression of GO agglomeration by adding hBN. Such a hybrid strategy in nanocomposites shows paramount values in the suppression of nanofiller agglomeration for preparing nanocomposites.

High-performance flexible humidity sensors are critical enabling components for next-generation wearable systems and electronic skin (e-skin), although achieving concomitant ultrathin geometries, mechanical flexibility, and ultrahigh sensitivity remains challenging. This study presents a significant advancement through the development of a capacitive flexible humidity sensor based on engineered Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene)/graphene oxide (GO) heterostructures. The synergistic interactions between the polar surface terminations of MXene (rich in –OH and –F groups) and the facilitated water transport properties of GO are exploited to yield a humidity-sensing layer exhibiting a significantly enhanced dielectric response to moisture. The optimized MXene/GO device achieves a striking ultrahigh sensitivity ( S = 1.24 × 10 6 % ΔC/C₀), representing a 228-fold improvement over its pristine MXene counterpart, across a wide operational range of 11 % to 97 % relative humidity (RH). The sensor further exhibits rapid dynamic responses (adsorption/desorption times of 17 s / 7 s, respectively) and maintains excellent linearity (R 2 = 0.99). This work highlights the efficacy of MXene/GO heterostructures for developing ultra-sensitive flexible humidity sensors, paving the way for innovative applications in non-contact interfaces, skin hydration diagnostics, and physiological monitoring.

Humic acid (HA) sodium salt (SH)-modified graphene oxide (GO) composite, which could snatch Pb (II), Cd (II) and Cu (II) effectively from aqueous solution, was fabricated by a green hydrothermal method. Here, the morphology and structure of as-synthesised SH–GO composite was presented through scanning electron microscopy, Roman spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. Owing to the introduction of cheap and readily available HA sodium salt, the adsorption capacity of SH–GO toward heavy metals was improved obviously, and the corresponding removal behaviours were further investigated in detail. Besides, the adsorption results were in good agreement with Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second kinetic model, where the thermodynamic parameters revealed the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic in essence. Adsorption–desorption result showing its stable adsorption capacity confirmed its great potential as adsorbent for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution.

This study aims to address the challenge of treating Pb 2+ in mining wastewater, a persistent issue in water environment pollution control. The sodium alginate/graphene oxide/polyethylene glycol (SA/GO/PEG) gel beads were designed and prepared with graphene oxide (GO), sodium alginate (SA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as raw materials by combining experiments and simulation. Firstly, the simulation system of SA/GO/PEG gel bead was constructed through molecular simulation, and the optimal composition of SA/GO/PEG gel bead was determined. The simulation results indicated that, with a PEG polymerization degree of 4000, the SA/GO/PEG gel bead system exhibited the greatest structural stability and the most effective cross-linked. Based on the understanding of the structure–performance relationship, SA/GO/PEG4000 gel beads were prepared to achieve an adsorbent with both high adsorption capacity and good stability. Characterization results indicated the successful cross-linked of polyethylene glycol with sodium alginate and graphene oxide, which not only introduced additional oxygen-containing functional groups and increased the crystallinity of the gel beads but, more importantly, led to the formation of a dense and complex three-dimensional network. This structure contributed to the improved thermal stability of the composite. Adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption of Pb 2+ onto SA/GO/PEG gel beads followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities at 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C were 490.20, 497.51, and 526.32 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the gel beads exhibited excellent reusability, retaining 92.64% of their initial adsorption capacity after four consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles.

Bionic structural material is a new type of high-performance material that has promising applications in the fields of aerospace, bio-medicine, etc. Herein, an investigation on the easy scale-up process and mechanical behavior of large-sized three-dimensional graphene oxide-based bioinspired nacre bulk materials with excellent mechanical properties was carried out. These bulk materials could be prepared by a lamination assembly strategy based on mass of two-dimensional graphene oxide nacre-mimetic films that fabricated by the continuous dry-spinning assembly technology. The mechanical mechanisms analysis showed that the lamination assembly process could control the interface bonding, and regulated the interface load transfer and failure models of the hierarchical structures, then optimized the combination of strength and energy absorption of the materials to meet different application requirements. These results may provide useful guidance for the efficient and controllable production of high-performance artificial nacre structure materials in application.

Searching for the highly active, stable, and high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, e.g., for both oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution (HER), is paramount in terms of bringing future renewable energy systems and energy conversion processes to reality. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) Ni3FeN nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) aerogel electrocatalysts were fabricated using precursors of (Ni,Fe)/r-GO alginate hydrogels through an ion-exchange process, followed by a convenient one-step nitrogenization treatment in NH3 at 700 °C. The resultant materials exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER and HER in alkaline media, with only small overpotentials of 270 and 94 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, respectively. The good performance was attributed to abundant active sites and high electrical conductivity of the bimetallic nitrides and efficient mass transport of the 3D r-GO aerogel framework. Furthermore, an alkaline electrolyzer was set up using Ni3FeN/r-GO as both the cathode and the anode, which achieved a 10 mA cm–2 current density at 1.60 V with durability of 100 h for overall water splitting. Density functional theory calculations support that Ni3FeN (111)/r-GO is more favorable for overall water splitting since the surface electronic structure of Ni3FeN is tuned by transferring electrons from Ni3FeN cluster to the r-GO through interaction of two metal species. Thus, the currently developed Ni3FeN/r-GO with superior water-splitting performance may potentially serve as a material for use in industrial alkaline water electrolyzers.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with ultrahigh surface areas and tunable pore architectures, are promising for advanced separation membranes; however, despite advances in defect engineering for catalysis and adsorption, its potential in membrane separations remains largely unexplored. Here, we introduce a defect engineering strategy for the Zr-MOF MIP-202(Zr) through precise regulation of defect density. The defective MIP-202(Zr) was integrated with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets via vacuum-assisted self-assembly to form hierarchical composite membranes. Notably, the defective composite membrane exhibited a two-fold increase in water permeability (up to 36.74 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) compared to the defect-free counterpart, while maintaining high rejection (>95%) for multiple model dyes, overcoming the conventional permeability–selectivity trade-off. The introduced defects created open sites and enhanced mass transport, collectively improving membrane hydrophilicity and water permeability. This work demonstrates defect engineering as a transformative strategy for designing high-efficiency MOF-based membranes, with significant implications for sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery.

Fabric-based electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers have attracted widespread attention due to their favorable flexibility. However, most fabric-based EMW absorbers are manufactured via surface coating on conventional fabric substrates, which not only confines the EMW-absorbing behaviors to the fabric exterior but also poses potential environmental hazards with the involvement of organic solvents during production. In this work, a green strategy is proposed for producing intrinsic EMW-absorbing fibers through an aqueous process, with the senary high-entropy layered double hydroxide integrating graphene oxide (GO@SHE-LDH) as a functional constituent and the sodium alginate (SA)-waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dual-network system as a fiber matrix. The GO@SHE-LDH/SA-WPU (GLSW) fibers are woven into plain-weave fabrics, exhibiting a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −69.6 dB and a maximum effective bandwidth (EABmax) of 7.1 GHz below 2.2 mm thickness, with favorable terahertz shielding/absorption performance (49.8 dB/45.6 dB) covering the 0.5–4.5 THz band, which is attributed to the synergistic EMW-absorbing effect of multiscale mechanisms. This work provides a promising eco-friendly method to produce functional fibers toward EMW absorption.
