Non-metallic catalysts have gained great attention in peroxymonosulfate based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) for their enhanced safety and environmental compatibility. However, low catalytic efficiency, incomplete mineralization and harsh preparation methods still hinder their practical application. This work developed an innovative solvent-free ball milling-assisted pyrolysis strategy utilizing hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as synergistic precursors to construct the BN-CNT-700 composite. The mutually doped active sites were facilely formed through carbon/nitrogen hybridization , where electron-withdrawing C O groups dominated 1 O 2 generation while electron-donating C N sites primarily mediated SO 4 •− production. The radical and non-radical pathways worked in synergy to achieve complete removal of 20 mg·L −1 bisphenol A (BPA) coupled with an ultra-high mineralization efficiency of 88.6 %, surpassing most reported non-metallic counterparts and even outperforming various metal-based systems. Moreover, the BN-CNT-700/PMS system demonstrated exceptional environmental robustness, maintaining high BPA removal efficiency across broad pH ranges, various inorganic ions, and complex water matrices. This research offers the important implications for the rational design of non-metallic catalysts with tunable active sites for high-efficiency pollutant decontamination.

Nucleoside radicals are key intermediates in the process of DNA damage, and alkali metal ions are a common group of ions in living organisms. However, so far, there has been a significant lack of research on the structural effects of alkali metal ions on nucleoside free radicals. In this study, we report a new method for generating metalized nucleoside radical cations in the gas phase. The radical cations [Ade+M-H]•+(M = Li, Na) are generated by the 280 nm ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) of the precursor ions of lithiated and sodiated ions of 2-iodoadenine in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT ICR) cell. Further infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of both radical cations were recorded in the region of 2750–3750 cm−1. By combining these results with theoretical calculations, the most stable isomers of both radicals can be identified, which share the common characteristics of triple coordination patterns of the metal ions. For both radical species, the lowest-energy isomers undergo hydrogen transfer. Although the sugar ring in the most stable isomer of [Ade+Li-H]•+is in a (South, syn) conformation similar to that of [Ado+Na]+, [Ade+Na-H]•+is distinguished by the unexpected opening of the sugar ring. Their theoretical spectra are in good agreement with experimental spectra. However, due to the flexibility of the structures and the complexity of their potential energy surfaces, the hydrogen transfer pathways still need to be further studied. Considering that the free radicals formed directly after C-I cleavage have some similar spectral characteristics, the existence of these corresponding isomers cannot be ruled out. The findings imply that the structures of nucleoside radicals may be significantly influenced by the attached alkali metal ions. More detailed experiments and theoretical calculations are still crucial.

This study presents the development of h-BN/PDMS composite coatings through hydroxylation treatment and modification of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) using a vinyl silane coupling agent. The study aims to address the limitations of conventional PDMS coatings, specifically their inadequate mechanical strength and poor resistance to weathering. The innovation lies in the improved dispersion of h-BN within the PDMS matrix, which was achieved via the surface grafting of vinyl groups. This approach, combined with the intrinsic layered structure and high thermal conductivity of h-BN, led to a synergistic enhancement in the mechanical performance and protective functionality of the coating. Experimental results demonstrated that incorporating 8% modified h-BN increased the tensile strength of the coating to 5.206 MPa, an improvement of 110.6% over pure PDMS, and reduced erosion depth to 2.7 μm. Furthermore, the coating exhibited minimal adhesive strength loss after UV aging (from 1.085 to 1.012 MPa). Under acidic conditions (pH = 2), the composite coating reduced the mortar strength loss by 53.1%. In seawater immersion and 25 freeze-thaw cycles, the mass loss rates of the test blocks decreased by 55.9% and 90.4%, respectively. In addition, the high UV reflectance (97.6%) and oxygen barrier properties of h-BN significantly mitigated the photo-oxidative degradation of the PDMS matrix. This study proposes a theoretical foundation and process optimization strategy for designing high-performance protective coatings suitable for use on concrete and electronic components in extreme environments.

Aluminum borate fibers are promising candidates for high-temperature thermal insulation owing to their excellent thermal stability, good chemical resistance, and relatively low density. Herein, we report a simple method for preparing porous Al 18 B 4 O 33 /h-BN composite fibers via electrospinning and stepwise heat treatment, using an aluminum isopropoxide/aluminum nitrate (AIP-AN) complex as the aluminum source and nanoscale h-BN as the boron source. The incorporation of h-BN not only promotes the in-situ formation of the Al 18 B 4 O 33 phase but also affects the fiber's pore structure. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous interface formed between h-BN and the Al 18 B 4 O 33 may introduce additional interfacial thermal resistance, thereby synergistically reducing thermal conductivity and improving thermal insulation performance. The resulting composite fibers exhibited a highly porous structure, with a high specific surface area of 53.9175 m 2 g −1 , a low density of 0.025 g cm −3 , and a low thermal conductivity of 0.0417 W m −1 K −1 . The porous Al 18 B 4 O 33 /h-BN composite fibers demonstrate significant potential for thermal insulation in extreme environments, offering a viable approach to developing high-performance ceramic fiber insulation materials.

Sequential electrospinning creates spatially separated MWCNT/h-BN bilayers. • M-B-30 delivers an RL min of −34.26 dB and an EAB max of 4.48 GHz. • M-B-30 reaches 91.52% solar reflectance and emissivity up to 0.979. • Outdoor cooling lowers M-B-30 to 16.45 °C below ambient temperature. • Bilayer design balances impedance matching, dielectric loss, and radiative cooling. Integrating passive radiative cooling with microwave absorption in a single membrane remains challenging because conductive carbon-based absorbers generally exhibit strong solar heating, whereas highly reflective components alter the dielectric response and disrupt the impedance-matching balance required for efficient microwave attenuation. Here, bilayer MWCNTs/h-BN nanofibrous composite membranes were fabricated by sequential electrospinning. The h-BN-containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) upper layer was designed to enhance solar reflection and mid-infrared emission while moderating the impedance transition from free space to the lossy MWCNTs/PAN lower layer. By adjusting the h-BN content, the optical and electromagnetic responses of the bilayer membranes were effectively coordinated. The optimized M-B-30 membrane achieved a minimum reflection loss of −34.26 dB at 1.5 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 4.48 GHz at 1.9 mm. It also exhibited a solar reflectance of 91.52% and an emissivity of up to 0.979 within the 8–13 μm atmospheric window, resulting in a maximum sub-ambient temperature reduction of 16.45 °C during outdoor testing. The microwave absorption was attributed to the balance among layered impedance matching, conductive dissipation, polarization relaxation, and multiple scattering, whereas the radiative-cooling performance resulted from enhanced solar scattering and efficient mid-infrared thermal emission. This spatially separated bilayer design provides an effective route for integrating microwave attenuation and passive thermal regulation in multifunctional composite membranes. Catalytic hydrogenolysis offers a promising route for plastic waste upcycling. Herein, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies (O V ) in CeO 2 supports dramatically enhanced this process. Reduction-engineered Ru/CeO 2 -NH 3 -800 exhibits 40% higher activity at 800 °C than untreated counterparts. Comprehensive characterization revealed unchanged Ru metal sites after treatment, but significantly increased oxygen vacancy content in the CeO 2 support. Isotopic C 6 –D 2 temperature-programmed surface reaction studies revealed that higher O V concentrations correlate with lower C–H bond activation temperatures, directly aligning with observed activity trends. We propose a novel Ru–Ce interfacial mechanism: O V -adjacent Ce 3+ –O sites activate C–H bonds to form *RCCR* intermediates, while dual Ru sites cleave C–C bonds via C–Ru coordination. This work establishes an O V -driven structure-activity relationship for the first time and reveals support-mediated C–H activation as crucial for advanced catalyst design.

Electrochemical hydrogen isotope separation has been constrained for decades by the similar energy barriers of the rate-determining O–H and O–D bond cleavage step in water isotopologues. Herein, we compact H-bond connectivity through screening a series of additives to stimulate electrochemical proton quantum tunneling (QT) behaviors of “through-barrier”, which are virtually impossible for heavier D-relevant motions. The average H-bond length of H2O⋯OH− is 3.4% shorter (2.78 Å) with isopropanol additive at the engineered interface. Fundamentally, QT effects are magnified by selectively promoting proton transfer-involved reactions through strengthening the H-bond and filling the H-bond gap, which are further proved by both experimental Arrhenius plots with near small-curvature tunneling approximation and a stronger proton excursion in path integral molecular dynamics simulations. Hence, a record-high H2O separation factor of 276 is realized at room temperature with a three-order-of-magnitude growth of H/D kinetic isotope effect constant up to 10,165. Significantly, a large-scale multistage reactor is engineered to obtain continuous enrichment of heavy water with a deuterium atomic fraction over 80%.

Organic/inorganic CdSe/TpBpy-COF S-scheme heterojunction for H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. • Molecularly intimate interface by in-situ solvothermal growth for rapid electron transfer. • Strong internal electric field and band bending drive the S-scheme charge transfer pathway. • An exceptional H 2 O 2 yield of 4349 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 in pure water without sacrificial agents. • DFT reveals thermodynamically spontaneous "downhill" 2e - oxygen reduction pathway. Photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production via oxygen reduction represents a sustainable pathway for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, constructing sacrificial-agent-free heterojunctions that simultaneously maximize charge separation and preserve redox ability remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a molecular-level interfacial engineering strategy to anchor COF-TpBpy onto CdSe nanorods via in-situ solvothermal growth, fabricating a strongly coupled organic–inorganic S-scheme heterojunction. Benefiting from the intimate interfacial contact, the optimized 10CdSe/TpBpy composite achieves a remarkable H 2 O 2 yield of 4349 μmol·g⁻¹·h⁻¹ in pure water without any sacrificial agents, alongside an impressive apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 11.1% at 450 nm. Mechanistic investigations, combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), and in-situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( in-situ XPS), visually confirm a robust built-in internal electric field (IEF) driven by the work function difference. Furthermore, femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy reveals an ultrafast picosecond-scale interfacial charge transfer behavior, providing direct kinetic evidence for the S-scheme mechanism. This unique charge transfer pathway effectively preserves the strong reducing electrons in the CdSe conduction band to boost the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. This work offers a viable paradigm for designing robust hybrid S-scheme architectures for efficient photocatalysis. Download: Download high-res image (167KB) Download: Download full-size image

Conventional polymer anion exchange membranes (AEMs) suffer from the permeability-selectivity trade-off in diffusion dialysis (DD), limiting their efficiency in critical resource recovery scenarios (e.g., acid recycling and Li + extraction). To overcome this, this study incorporated polyaniline-modified MXene (PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X ) nanosheets as transformative fillers into quaternized polyphenylene oxide (QPPO). The resulting PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X -QPPO membranes enable dual-function DD for H + /metal cations and Li + /Mg 2+ separation. First, the as-prepared membranes exhibited enhanced microphase separation, yielding expanded hydrophilic domains (13.95–14.8 nm vs. 12.5 nm in pristine QPPO). Moreover, the 1.0 %-PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X -QPPO membrane (with 1.0 wt% filler loading) achieved a peak ion exchange capacity of 1.75 mmol g −1 . For H + /metal cations separation: in HCl/FeCl 2 mixture, the H + dialysis coefficient ( U H ) reached 1.39–1.50 × 10 −2 m h −1 (2.7–2.9 times higher than the commercial TWDDA3S, 0.52 × 10 −2 m h −1 ); in HCl/AlCl 3 mixture, U H reached 1.50–1.53 × 10 −2 m h −1 , combined with exceptional selectivity ( S H/Al = 1568.4–1805.8), outperforming both TWDDA3S ( U H = 0.94 × 10 −2 m h −1 , S H/Al = 1423.8) and pristine QPPO ( U H = 1.27 × 10 −2 m h −1 , S H/Al = 1117). Finally, for Li + /Mg 2+ separation, the membranes delivered enhanced Li + flux with competitive S Li/Mg (11.4–12.4) against TWDDA3S (11.4) and QPPO (11.8). This study demonstrates that PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X and QPPO synergistically overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off in polymer membranes.

Efficient thermal management is a critical challenge for next-generation electronics, where conventional polymer-based materials suffer from inherently low thermal conductivity. Inspired by natural honeycomb structures, we developed a freeze-casting strategy to fabricate high-performance hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)/polysilylaryl-enyne (PSAE) composites exhibiting enhanced thermal conductivity. By leveraging the unidirectional crystallization of tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), a highly ordered h-BN honeycomb scaffold was constructed, facilitating the formation of efficient phonon conduction pathways. The composites, with a low h-BN (10 μm) ratio of 23 vol%, exhibit an outstanding omni-directional thermal conductivity of 4.71 W/(m·K) along the z-axis and 3.44 W/(m·K) along the x-axis, significantly outperforming conventional polymer composites. Moreover, dielectric characterization confirms that the honeycomb structure enhances anisotropic dielectric behavior ( ε rz = 3.68, ε rx = 3.32, for h-BN (10 μm) at 23 vol%). The proposed bioinspired approach presents a scalable and effective route for developing lightweight, thermally conductive composites for advanced electronic applications.

On the basis of the method used by Reinsch and Solovyeva, the aluminum based MOF material CAU-10-H (CAU stand for Christian-Albrechts-University) was synthesized by multiplying the amount of aluminum sulfate octahydrate and isophthalic acid by 10 times. CAU-10-H (b) is obtained after washing. In order to improve the water vapor adsorption performance of pure CAU-10-H (b), lithium chloride (LiCl) solution was compounded with CAU-10-H (b) by impregnation method to obtain a composite adsorbent CAU-10-H (L) and its adsorption characteristics were studied. The results showed that the composite adsorbent showed good adsorption and desorption performance under test conditions. Among them, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of the composite adsorbent with 33.1% LiCl content is 0.5007 g/g after 30 cycles, which is about 1.675 times of the adsorption capacity of pure CAU-10-H (b) under the same conditions. This shows the potential of the composite adsorbent to be used in the air-water extraction system.
