A genuine H-bond donor and Lewis base amine cocatalyst in ring-opening polymerizations

Yuejia Zhu,Yongzhu Hu,Zhenjiang Li,Bo Liu,Yuanyuan Qu,Zhihao Zhang,Tianfo Guo,Yongqiang Li,Luoyu Gao,Kai Guo

Hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and organic base binary cocatalyst established a gold standard in organocatalytic ring-opening polymerizations (ROPs). In depth probe of the mechanisms revealed that proton abstraction of the acidic H on the HBDs by the bases do occur frequently. A truly simple HBD and Lewis base (LB) cocatalysis, however, was elusive. We proposed genuine HBD/LB cocatalyst for ROPs by introducing 3-amino-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxide (ABTD) as a bidentate H-bond donor and triethylamine (TEA) as a mild Lewis base. ROPs of lactide (LA) and trimethylene carbonate (TMC) in solutions at room temperature were success. The mild ROPs produced polylactide (PLA) of predictable molecular weights (from 1.6 to 26.7 kg mol −1 ) and extremely narrow dispersities (Đ 1.01 to 1.06). Furthermore, well-defined diblock copolymers PTMC-b-PLA were synthesized. NMR titration experiments verified exclusive H-bond donor activation of the monomer and TEA activation of the hydroxyl chain end without trace of proton abstraction.

Synergistic pore-acidity engineering in hierarchical H-beta zeolites for molecular sieving of ethylcyclohexane

Xue Ma,Xianjie Wang,Jinhui He,Jingdong Gou,Yaning Zhao,Akang Liu,Shuo Feng,Louwei Cui,Huiyong Chen,Jun Yang,Liuyi Pan,Dong Li

The similarity in physical and chemical properties between ethylcyclohexane (ECH) and dimethylcyclohexane (DCH) isomers poses significant challenges for the effective separation of ECH from coal-derived C8 naphthenic oil. This study employed a model oil system comprising the three predominant components in C8 naphthenic oil: ECH, Cis-1,3-DCH, and Trans-1,3-DCH. The separation performance of H-beta zeolites with varying silica-aluminum ratios (SAR) was evaluated through static adsorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments. The results indicated that H-beta-55 (SAR = 55) demonstrated superior separation efficiency for ECH, attributable to its hierarchical microporous-mesoporous structure and moderate acidity. Specifically, H-beta-55 achieved an ECH/1,3-DCH selectivity coefficient of 3.7, an ECH adsorption capacity of 7.1 mg/g, and a pseudo-second-order adsorption rate constant of 0.67 g/(mg·min), which was 3.4–4.8 times higher than those observed for the 1,3-DCH isomers. In dynamic breakthrough tests, the ECH breakthrough endpoint (∼350 min) occurred approximately 150 min later than that of Cis-1,3-DCH (∼200 min). Ethylcyclohexane temperature-programmed desorption (ECH-TPD) experiments confirmed that physical interactions predominantly governed adsorption. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations of molecular probability density distributions revealed that ECH (kinetic diameter ∼ 6.37 Å) preferentially accesses secondary pore channels to occupy high-density adsorption sites. In contrast, steric hindrance caused by the methyl groups of DCH isomers restricted them to the primary 12-membered ring main channels. These findings underscore the importance of fine-tuning the SAR of H-beta zeolites to optimize pore size distribution and acidity for efficient C8 naphthene separation. This work provides a molecular-level theoretical basis for designing advanced adsorbents for industrial-grade naphthenic oil separation processes.

GNPs and h-BN@SiO2 synergistically enhancing wide-temperature tribological performance of YSZ composites

Xueqi Gu,Xinyue Hu,Daheng Wu,Xian-Zong Wang,Jianxi Liu,Hong Yu,Cheng-Feng Du,Long Wang,Jun Yang

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is a promising candidate for abradable seal coatings (ASC) in aero-engines, yet its inherent high coefficient of friction (COF) limits further application. This study introduced dual solid lubricant phases consisting of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and silica-coated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN@SiO 2 ) with different mass fractions into YSZ, and their tribological performance was systematically evaluated from room temperature to 750 °C. The composite containing 15 wt% GNPs and 5 wt% h-BN@SiO 2 exhibited low and stable COF (below 0.3) and moderate wear rates. Notably, it achieved an ultra-low COF of 0.08 at 750 °C. This outstanding performance originates from the formation of a low-shear graphene/BN interlaced lamellar structure, while tribochemically formed silicate phases and molten boron oxide further enhance the overall tribological performance of the composite. This work proposes an effective design approach for the development of high-performance YSZ-based ASC materials across a broad temperature range.

Flexible and Fully Printed Artificial Synaptic Devices Based on h-BN-Gated Tellurene Memtransistor

Dongfang Shen,Yumeng Zhou,Ru Li,Shengkai Xia,Lingshuo Meng,Liang Zhang,Mingjia Zhang

The memtransistor constructed using the emerging two-dimensional tellurene material has demonstrated significant potential for application in artificial synaptic devices and image recognition. However, conventional device fabrication processes, such as dry transfer, restrict tellurene’s further application in flexibility and wearable electronics. Here, a fully printed, flexible tellurene field-effect transistor (FET) is demonstrated, consisting of a channel, gate dielectric layer, and contact electrodes, all of which are prepared using functional inks that include tellurene, h-BN, and graphene, respectively. Such a device integrates scalable ink formulations and neuromorphic functionality for advanced electronics, exhibiting relatively stable electrical performance even after 10,000 bending cycles at a curvature radius of 11.05 mm. Applying electric stimulation to the h-BN layer enables the realization of a bioinspired memtransistor, achieving paired-pulse facilitation, reconfigurable short-term plasticity to long-term plasticity transitions, and synaptic weight updates. Moreover, image recognition simulation using an artificial neural network achieves 93.91% accuracy on the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database, which can maintain 78.33% accuracy after introducing σ = 0.7 Gaussian noise. These results position printed tellurene FETs as promising, noise-resilient building blocks for scalable, flexible neuromorphic systems.

Symmetry Breaking Induced by H/F Substitution in Molecular Ferroelectrics for Flexible Wearable Sensors

Wei Bao,Ming-Yang Shi,Pei-Zheng Liu,Hao Du,Zheng-Xuan Ni,Lin-Na Tian,Jia-Jia Zhao,Chao Shi,Li-Zhuang Chen

Molecular ferroelectric materials exhibit structural tunability and high flexibility, demonstrating significant potential in flexible electronics and wearable sensing applications. Herein, we use nonpolar piperidinium tetrafluoroborate PipBF4 (1, Pip+ = piperidine) as the precursor. We designed and synthesized an organic–inorganic hybrid ferroelectric, (4,4-DFPD)BF4 (2, 4,4-DFPD+ = 4,4-difluoropiperidinium), via H/F substitution strategy. Single-crystal structural analysis indicates that the introduction of fluorine atoms successfully induces symmetry breaking in the crystal structure, causing it to crystallize at room temperature in the ferroelectric space group Pca21. At the Curie temperature, the (4,4-DFPD)BF4 transitions from an ordered ferroelectric state to a disordered paraelectric state. This (4,4-DFPD)BF4 exhibits a phase transition temperature (Tc = 398 K), spontaneous polarization, and piezoelectric properties (d33 ≈ 28 pC/N). Based on the piezoelectric properties of (4,4-DFPD)BF4, we fabricated flexible composite films of (4,4-DFPD)BF4/PBAT PBAT = poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate). These films achieve mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion without additional polarization treatment, delivering an output voltage up to 4 V at the optimal composition. This flexible sensor can stably monitor various physiological signals ranging from large-scale human joint movements to minute vocal cord vibrations. It exhibits high durability, exceeding 2000 cycles.

Optimal Ni⁰/Ni2 + modulates H* coverage to accelerate FeNi-C electro-catalyzing nitrate reduction

Yonghao Wang,Shiying Li,Youmei Liu,Zhiwei Zou,Xiaomei Zheng,Yongjing Wang

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (NO₃RR) offers a promising route for wastewater treatment and nitrogen resource recovery. In this work, a FeNi alloy-loaded carbon material (FeNi-C) was evaluated about NO 3 RR performance and the role of different active hydrogen (H*) was illustrated. FeNi(1:1)-C obtained at 700 °C exhibits a 96.6% NO 3 ⁻ -N removal and 99.6% NH₄ ⁺ -N selectivity at −1.5 V and it maintains excellent performance over 10 cycles without metal leaching. Furthermore, high-concentration nitrate can be converted to ammonium, recovered as struvite. Mechanism analysis indicate that a high surface coverage of adsorbed atomic hydrogen (H* ads ) is more crucial for enhancing the selectivity of nitrate-to-ammonia conversion compared with the free H*(H* free )in the electrolyte. Tafel slope combined with verification experiments reveal that an optimal Ni 0 /Ni 2+ (≈2) facilitates water electrolysis to enables FeNi(1:1)-C forming a high surface coverage of H* ads . Thereby, FeNi(1:1)-C maintains an abundant H* ads -covered reductive-microenvironment surface, promoting fast conversion between H* ads and the adjacent nitrogen-containing intermediates and suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, this reductive-microenvironment surface also helps protect the FeNi alloy from oxidation, endowing its superior stability. This work highlights the superior role of H* ads over H*(H* free )in the electrolyte.

Effects of B2O3 on the Microstructure and Properties of h-BN-ZrO2-SiC Composites

Xingpu Hu,Zhaoran Li,Guoqi Liu,Fan Qian,Mao Chen,Yongqiang Chen

Side seal plates for thin-strip continuous casting require exceptional resistance to thermal shock, corrosion and wear, for which h-BN based ceramics serve as promising candidates. However, h-BN-ZrO 2 -SiC composites suffer from poor sintering densification. h-BN-ZrO 2 -SiC composites modified with varying amounts of B 2 O 3 as a single additive were prepared via vacuum hot-press sintering at 1550 °C, 1600 °C and 1650 °C. The phase composition, microstructure, relative density, flexural strength and thermal shock resistance were systematically investigated. The composite with 1 wt% B 2 O 3 sintered at 1650 °C achieved a flexural strength of 76.6 MPa, which was 42% higher than that of the additive‑free sample. The results revealed that B 2 O 3 facilitates the in-situ formation of ZrB 2 via a liquid‑phase sintering mechanism. This work clarified the modification mechanism of B 2 O 3 in h-BN-based composites, providing experimental basis and theoretical guidance for the development of h‑BN‑based ceramics used for side dams in thin‑strip continuous casting.

Durable Superhydrophobic F-SiO2@h-BN/PAE Composite Coating Fabricated via Scalable Facile Method

Hui Liu,Yu Zhu,Xin Cheng,Zhenhua Dong,Qiang Liu

Superhydrophobic materials offer promising prospects for utilization in energy, environmental, and related fields. However, their long-term stability in natural environments is constrained by factors such as mechanical wear and aging, which compromise their practical effectiveness and service life. While notable experimental results have been obtained worldwide, scalable application remains limited by the complexity of the requisite fabrication processes. In this study, a durable superhydrophobic coating was developed through a facile one-step process, utilizing a polyaspartic ester (PAE) matrix reinforced with a composite of self-synthesized fluorinated silica (F-SiO2) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) micro-/nano-structures. This strategy effectively enhanced filler dispersion within the resin matrix and promoted hydrophobicity, yielding a stable superhydrophobic surface. The resulting coating exhibits significant potential for scalable application. The optimized coating demonstrated a water contact angle of 161.2° and a roll-off angle of 7.6°, showing excellent repellency to water, corrosive liquids, and fluids across a wide pH range, along with remarkable self-cleaning performance. Benefiting from the synergistic enhancement of h-BN and F-SiO2, the coating also exhibits superior mechanical durability, maintaining a contact angle of 144.4° after 1000 abrasion cycles. Furthermore, in low-temperature anti-icing tests, the coating significantly delayed ice formation on its surface. Notably, after 1000 h of UV aging tests, the F-SiO2@BN/PAE coating retained its intact superhydrophobic structure, with the water contact angle only slightly decreasing from 159.6° to 152.8°, still within an excellent superhydrophobic state, demonstrating outstanding weather resistance. By integrating surface functionalization with mechanical reliability through a facile one-step fabrication process, this study provides significant insights for the large-scale application of hydrophobic materials in the energy and transportation sectors.

Nacre-mimetic Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H) Composite with High Strength and Toughness

Chenchen Xiong,Weihuan Li,Jiarui Xing,Shengjun Chen,Yulin Wang,Yang Zhou

Low toughness remains an enduring constraint to cementitious materials. Manipulating calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the “genetic component” of cement, which determines mechanical properties of cementitious materials, presents an attractive strategy for intrinsic toughening. However, the modulation is constrained by small-length scale and limited enhancement. Herein, this work proposes an approach to fabricate nacre-mimetic C-S-H bulk composite with brick-mortar microstructure. The composite exhibits an excellent combination of high flexural strength, toughness and impact resistance, with toughness surpassing pure C-S-H and cement paste by factors of over 1000 times, and even outperforming that of natural nacre, reinforced cement-based materials and existing reported C-S-H-based materials. The nacre-mimetic C-S-H composite also exhibits a 20- to 30-fold increase in impact resistance and flexural strength compared to pure C-S-H, respectively. Multi-scale simulations reveal strengthening and toughening mechanisms, including molecular-scale coordination, nano-asperities, viscoplastic deformation, and crack deflection across micro-macro scales. The developed C-S-H nacre not only achieves remarkably high toughness and broadens the potential for scalable application, but also paves a way for designing advanced bioinspired cementitious and silicate-based materials in structural applications.

Gaδ+-H active sites-driven reverse water gas shift reaction with high CO selectivity

Zhenzhong Tao,Huaixiang Li,Dedong He,Zijun Huang,Jun Liang,Jiaming Dong,Xiaohua Cao,Yongming Luo

The reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction has garnered significant attention for its ability to selectively convert CO 2 into CO. However, conventional transition metal catalysts often face challenges such as the generation of byproducts at low temperatures and sintering at high temperatures. In this study, a series of Ga/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with varying Ga loadings was prepared using the impregnation method. Notably, these catalysts exhibit nearly 100% CO selectivity across a broad temperature range of 300–700 °C, with stable catalytic activity maintained after 165 h of testing at 600 °C. Characterization reveals Ga species exist as highly dispersed Ga 2 O 3 on the Al 2 O 3 support. The formation of Ga δ+- H species occurs under an H 2 atmosphere, accompanied by the creation of oxygen vacancies. In situ DRIFTS spectroscopy confirms Ga δ+ -H as the key active site for RWGS, and this species undergoes reversible regeneration in a H 2 environment. This work first reveals the pivotal role of Ga δ+ -H in driving the highly selective RWGS reaction. By promoting CO 2 activation and the formation of key formate intermediates, it achieves nearly 100% CO selectivity. This discovery provides novel design insights and theoretical foundations for developing highly efficient CO₂ conversion catalysts.

Intelligent multi-functional h-BN/ZIF-8 nanocontainers for high-performance anti-corrosion coatings

Mingjun Cui,Shijun Huang,Jiate Xue,Xinyu Chen,Siming Ren

2D nanocontainers are prepared with barrier, corrosion inhibition and monitoring. • BZ-P/EP coating shows higher .|Z| f = 0.01 Hz of 4.1 × 10 10  Ω cm 2 after 60 days immersion. • PH-responsive ZIF-8 enables the rapid release of Phen under acidic conditions. • Visual corrosion warning is achieved via Fe 2+ –Phen coordination. To overcome the limitations of conventional anticorrosion coatings, which typically exhibit single functionality and lack early-stage corrosion warning capability, this study presents the design and fabrication of a two-dimensional intelligent nanocontainer system. Specifically, a pH-responsive zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) was grown in situ on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets, and subsequently loaded with 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen), enabling the integration of physical barrier protection, active corrosion inhibition, and visual corrosion monitoring. UV–vis absorption spectra and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results demonstrate that the BZ-P nanocontainers not only provide effective corrosion inhibition but also exhibit rapid, pH-triggered release of Phen in mildly acidic conditions. After incorporation into an epoxy matrix, the resulting BZ-P/EP composite coating exhibits a high low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z| f = 0.01 Hz ) of 4.1 × 10 10  Ω cm 2 after 60 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, which is approximately 2270 times higher than that of the neat epoxy coating. This improvement is accompanied by a significant reduction in oxygen content on the underlying steel surface (from 19.56 wt% to 0.62 wt%), indicating markedly suppressed corrosion. Under damaged coating conditions, the BZ-P/EP system maintains effective corrosion protection, as evidenced by a relatively high impedance modulus and low local admittance. This enhanced performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of BN and ZIF-8, which combines structural barrier reinforcement with active corrosion inhibition. Furthermore, the released Phen molecules at damaged sites coordinate with Fe 2+ ions to form a red complex, enabling rapid and intuitive visual detection of corrosion initiation. This work provides a novel strategy for developing intelligent coating systems that integrate corrosion protection, active corrosion inhibition, and real-time monitoring, offering significant potential for applications in harsh service environments.

Electroenzymatic Cascade for Chiral Hydroxylation of C–H Bond Using In Situ H2O2 Generation

Jinbao Li,Jialin Zhang,Chi Zhang,Qiao Yao,Xuan Zhao,Li Ma,Jing Bai,Yunting Liu,Yanjun Jiang,Guanhua Liu

Abstract Unspecific peroxygenase (UPO) catalyzes selective oxyfunctionalization of C–H bonds using H2O2 but suffers from enzyme instability and substrate solubility issues. To address these challenges, a cobalt and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes electrocatalyst with two-electron oxygen reduction performance was developed to electrocatalytically generate H2O2 in situ to avoid the damage from adscititious H2O2. This approach maintains the H2O2 concentration in the reaction system to balance the reactivity and oxidative inactivation of UPO. Meanwhile, a covalent organic framework (COF, TpTa) with good biocompatibility was selected as the carrier to prepare AaeUPO@TpTa immobilized enzymes, enhancing enzyme stability and substrate enrichment. By integrating the in situ H2O2 generation system via electrocatalysis with immobilized enzyme catalysis, and using 4-ethylbenzoic acid as a model substrate, the reaction achieved a 99.1% yield of 4-(1-hydroxyethyl)benzoic acid after 16 h, with broad substrate applicability and excellent enantioselectivity (94–99% ee). The constructed electroenzymatic cascade catalysis system enables efficient C–H bond hydroxylation.
