Objective Research has shown that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a protective role in many diseases of the nervous system. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of hypoxia on endogenous H2S concentration in the cerebral cortex of Alzheimer's disease (AD) transgenic mice and its mechanism. Methods AD transgenic mice were raised in closed boxes and pure nitrogen was introduced to reduce the oxygen concentration to 8%-10%, establishing an animal model of hypoxia. Oxygen partial pressure was measured with an oxygen meter. The expression of cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) in cerebral cortex tissue was determined by Western blot, and H2S concentration was measured by a modified methylene blue method. Results (1) Hypoxia down-regulated CBS expression in cerebral cortex tissue of AD transgenic mice (p < 0.05). (2) The concentration of H2S in the cerebral cortex tissue of the hypoxic transgenic group was significantly lower than that of the Control group (p < 0.01). (3) Overexpression of CBS reversed the hypoxia-induced decrease of H2S concentration in the cerebral cortex tissue of AD transgenic mice (p < 0.01). Conclusions Hypoxia decreased the concentration of endogenous H2S in the cerebral cortex tissue of AD transgenic mice by down-regulating the expression of CBS.

Solid electrolytes equipped battery show promise in solving energy storage and ecological concerns owing to their excellent electrical conductivity and chemical stability. Only a limited number of substances satisfy the demanding criterion of high ionic conductivity (≥ 10 −3 S/cm), while using non-toxic elements. In this work, the designed Na 3.3 Zn 0.1 Sb 0.9 S 4 electrolyte, a zinc-doped sodium sulfide ion conductor, with a maximum conductivity of 1.48 × 10 −3 S/cm under normal conditions, and a low activation energy of 0.128 eV was achieved. This was ruled by substituting low-valence Zinc for antimony in the SbS 4 3− cell, maintaining efficient ion transport pathways. Additionally, the electrolyte demonstrated strong air stability under humid conditions and emitted minimal H 2 S. The origin of heterovalent ion doping and the impact of thermal effects on electrochemical performance were discussed in detail, which were crucial to promote the development of sodium-ion solid electrolytes.

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), as a toxic gas, is one of the occupational hazards to workers' health. Traditional H 2 S sensors often suffer from external circuits, measurement systems, liquid-phase reactions, or high detection limits. Herein, a colorimetric sensor for H 2 S detection was developed by incorporating colorimetric dye [lead acetate, Pb(OAc) 2 ] into polyacrylamide (PAM)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel. Benefitting from the interpenetrating polymer network, non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds and dense internal structure, the hydrogel exhibited excellent adhesion to different substances (adhesion strength up to 14.11 kPa) and mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 116.92 kPa, elongation rate up to 576%). Furthermore, due to the liquid-phase reaction system and excellent [Pb(OAc) 2 ] loading capacity provided by the hydrogel, the prepared sensors exhibited excellent sensing performance response time, sensitivity, and simplicity. The theoretical detection limit of the sensor was 0.69 ppm, and the minimum exposure time required for detection was 14 s. The colorimetric effect of the hydrogels was positively correlated with the addition of Pb(OAc) 2 and the extension of time. The results showed that the color change of PAM/PVA/Pb(OAc) 2 hydrogel can be visible to the naked eye even if the concentration of H 2 S is only 1 ppm. It is expected that this hands-free, arbitrarily adhesive, stretchable hydrogel colorimetric sensor strategy for visual detection of H 2 S will extend toxic gas alarm systems to a new level.

Real time detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in deep brain regions is of great significance. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors hold promise for real-time monitoring but low sensitivity due to the use of small electrode restrained its application. In this study, a miniaturized sensor that integrates organic photoelectrochemical transistors (OPECTs) with optical fiber (OF) microelectrodes was designed for the first time, which can amplify the small PEC signal into large channel current change. A conductive gold layer and cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu2O NPs) were sequentially deposited onto the OF, followed by a Nafion polymer coating to enhance anti-interference capabilities. Cu2O reacts with H2S to generate Cu2S. The resulting Cu2O/Cu2S heterojunction induces changes in the PEC signal and channel current. Compared to a conventional PEC system, the OPECT sensor has higher sensitivity and lower detection limit, enabling monitoring of H2S concentration fluctuations within the rat brain, which demonstrates the approach’s capability for highly sensitive in vivo biomarker detection.

The detection of low concentration hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas is of paramount importance for environmental safety and human health, given its colorless, toxic, and flammable nature. In this study, heterostructure material composed of SnO 2 nanorods modified with NiO nanosheets were synthesized, which significantly improved the detection performance of the sensor for hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas at low temperatures by combining the interaction between oxygen vacancies and built-in electric fields. The formation of heterojunctions was verified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the existence of oxygen vacancies was further confirmed through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The heterojunction sensor, when modified with 3 mol% NiO, exhibited an exceptional response value of 386 towards 10 ppm H 2 S at 125 °C, with a rapid response time of 6 s, surpassing that of the pristine SnO 2 sensor. This superior performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies between SnO 2 and NiO, along with the inherent electric field present in the heterojunction. The study showcases the remarkable selectivity and long-term stability of this sensor in detecting hydrogen sulfide gas, offering innovative insights for the advancement of low-temperature and highly sensitive H 2 S gas sensors.

Electronic modulation of Pt sites is of great significance in catalytic reaction involved chemical engineering process. Alkali metal doping is a promising strategy to modify the d orbit of Pt, which can effectively affect the reaction between material and adsorbates, however, the relationship is still unclear. Here, we have rationally designed Pt-modified Na-doped WO 3 nanorods, and the electronic modulation of Pt can be finely modified by Na doping. The Pt-Na/WO 3 -Ar nanorods exhibit excellent H₂S sensing performance, with high response (R a /R g = 701 @ 1 ppm), low operating temperature (110 °C), and detection limit as low as 2.42 ppb. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that the introducing of Na effectively enhances the interaction between Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and WO 3 . Additionally, Na doping successfully modulate the d-band center of Pt, optimizing the adsorption and desorption processes during sensing. The synergistic effects of these components enable the Pt-Na/WO 3 -Ar sensor to exhibit outstanding H₂S sensing performance. Notably, the fabricated sensors are further used to monitor the hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) of halitosis biomarkers, which holds significant application potential in environmental protection and medical diagnostics.

Periodontitis is a widespread chronic inflammatory disease characterized by pathogenic bacterial biofilms and a hypoxic microenvironment, which together impede effective treatment and tissue regeneration. To overcome these challenges, we developed an injectable, hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S)-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel, termed PDA@Hb/NOCG, for microenvironment-adaptive therapy. This hydrogel was formulated by incorporating hemoglobin-polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA@Hb NPs) as an oxygen-generating element and tetra-armed azide-terminated polyethylene glycol as an H 2 S-scavenging component into a dynamically cross-linked Schiff base network. The platform demonstrated satisfactory injectability, self-healing properties, and sustained oxygen release. Notably, upon encountering pathological levels of H 2 S, a key metabolite of anaerobic infection, the hydrogel underwent an azide-to-amine transformation, significantly enhancing its cationic antibacterial activity in situ. In vitro studies revealed that PDA@Hb/NOCG effectively reduced hypoxia, exhibited strong antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against Porphyromonas gingivalis , Escherichia coli , and Staphylococcus aureus , and possessed excellent cytocompatibility. Additionally, under inflammatory conditions, it promoted the osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) by activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. In a rat periodontitis model, PDA@Hb/NOCG significantly alleviated local bacterial burden, reduced inflammatory infiltration, and maintained alveolar bone structure, as confirmed by micro-CT and histological analyses, without inducing systemic toxicity. This study presents a novel nano-enabled, gas-responsive hydrogel that executes a sequential therapeutic strategy, from hypoxia alleviation and on-demand antibacterial enhancement to pro-osteogenic activation, offering a promising, minimally invasive approach for synergistic infection control and tissue regeneration in periodontitis.

While conventional large bone defect healing is a complicated process with multiple physiological limitations, our approach leverages hematoma's innate regenerative capabilities-particularly its structure and biological functions, inculding multi-functional regulation response, activating cell autophagy, resisting persistent inflammation and enhancing angiogenesis/osteogenesis eventually, which supports a new strategy to bone repair solutions. This biomimetic strategy is more compatible with the process of bone regeneration, thereby shifting the implant paradigm from passive structural support to active biological regulation. Inspired by the balloon structure, we developed microfluidic biomimetic hematoma microspheres featuring: pH-responsive GelMA outer layer and NaHS-loaded liposomal core. This dual-component system spatiotemporally releases H 2 S in acidic bone defects, simultaneously decreasing chronic inflammation, promoting angiogenesis, activating autophagy and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC). This biomimetic strategy recapitulates key hematoma-mediated osteogenic processes, where controlled H 2 S release orchestrates the interplay of angiogenesis, inflammation resolution, cell autophagy and osteogenesis.

This study employs a synergistic strategy of Zn doping and KOH etching to precisely regulate the physicochemical properties of CeO 2 , significantly enhancing its H 2 S catalytic oxidation performance. Experimental results indicate that Zn doping induces lattice expansion of CeO 2 , while KOH etching further removes Zn, increases Ce 3+ and oxygen vacancy concentrations, thereby optimizing surface acidity-basicity and redox capability. The obtained E-Zn/CeO 2 material exhibits excellent H 2 S conversion, reaction and kinetics, while promoting the selective formation of SO 2 . Mechanistic studies reveal that H 2 S undergoes adsorption and dissociation via μ 2 -OH/–COOH groups on the material surface, with the oxidation process following the MvK mechanism, where oxygen vacancies play a key role in adsorption and lattice oxygen transfer. Theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the synergistic modification induces reconstruction of the electronic structure of CeO 2 , including weakened covalency of Ce O bonds and a spin-state transition of O 2p orbitals, which significantly reduces the oxygen vacancy formation energy (as low as −1.47 eV) and enhances structural stability. This work provides both experimental and theoretical foundations for the rational design of highly efficient H 2 S catalytic materials.

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a highly toxic, corrosive and flammable gas. Therefore, real-time and low-power monitoring under room temperature conditions is of great significance. However, room-temperature chemical resistance sensors usually have weak signal outputs and are susceptible to humidity and coexisting gases, which remain the main challenges in practical applications. To address these issues, we developed a heterojunction-assisted, phase-change-based sensing platform. Through a two-step solvothermal method, a chemical resistance sensor based on flower-like In 2 O 3 was constructed, with uniformly covered highly dispersed CuO nanoclusters on the surface. The optimized 4.5 wt% CuO/In 2 O 3 composite exhibits an exceptional response (18,108) to 10 ppm H 2 S at 25°C, along with a detection limit as low as 10 ppb and a rapid response time of 4 s. Notably, the sensor maintains a robust response of 603 even at 80% relative humidity and demonstrates outstanding selectivity against CO and NH 3 (10 ppm) as well as typical volatile organic compounds (1000 ppm). This remarkable performance arises from a dual sensitization mechanism: the p-n junction establishes a high-resistance baseline via interfacial charge redistribution, while H₂S exposure triggers an in-situ CuO→CuS phase transition that collapses the junction barrier and produces a pronounced resistance drop. Density functional theory calculations further corroborate preferential H 2 S adsorption and strong Cu-S bond formation, supporting the proposed chemical-switching pathway. These results highlight a heterojunction-assisted phase-transition strategy for reliable, low-power, and humidity-tolerant H 2 S monitoring under practical hazardous conditions.

Thrombosis and intimal hyperplasia are two major challenges leading to the failure of blood-contacting materials. To address these challenges, a hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-releasing glycocalyx-mimetic “core-shell” composite coating was constructed on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The “core” comprised a PDMS matrix embedded with an H2S donor for sustained release. Following polydopamine/polyethylenimine interlayer deposition, a glycocalyx-mimetic “shell” of poly(sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) was covalently grafted. The optimized coating, featuring a shell polymerized from 30 mol % sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate and 70 mol % oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (designated as AT-PP2), achieved controlled 7-day H2S release and maintained 15-day physiological stability. The synergy between released H2S and the biomimetic shell conferred exceptional hemocompatibility and cell selectivity. Compared to unmodified PDMS, AT-PP2 reduced platelet adhesion by ∼93%, prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time and thrombin time by ∼67% and ∼119%, respectively, and enabled precise bidirectional regulation─promoting endothelial cell adhesion while inhibiting smooth muscle cell hyperplasia. This “Active Defense” anticoagulation with “Dynamic Modulation” regeneration strategy offers a promising endothelial-mimetic platform for next-generation blood-contacting materials.

Simultaneously achieving chemiresistive gas sensors with high selectivity, sensitivity, and stability remains a significant challenge. In this study, inspired by the H 2 S-specific catalytic enzymes in biological systems, we construct an amorphous unsaturated-ligand MIL-68(Fe) 3D MOF via in situ thermal induction. Without the introduction of extrinsic catalytic or conductive components, this MOF modification strategy creates unsaturated Fe atoms within the framework itself. These atoms function dually as catalytic and conductive sites, thereby overcoming the inherent low conductivity of conventional 3D MOFs and enabling the direct construction of chemiresistive sensor for room-temperature molecular olfactory sensing. The targeted water-adsorption-coordinated catalytic mechanism bypasses the limitations of traditional oxygen adsorption processes to achieve unprecedented comprehensive performance, including fingerprint-level selectivity (against 29 interfering gases), superior sensitivity coefficient (~83/ppm), ultra-low measured lower limit (1 ppb), rapid gas sensing response/recovery characteristics (~30 s/73 s), and excellent long-term stability at room temperature.
