A novel synthetic strategy has been successfully developed, which utilizes supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) to fabricate sulfur-modified zeolites (zeolites@S) for Hg2+ removal from water. Owing to the low viscosity, high diffusivity and excellent dissolving capacity of SC-CO2 as well as the nontoxicity, noninflammability and being a low-cost solvent it exhibits the strong ability to expand the crystal structure of zeolite and the high-efficiency transfer of sulfur in zeolite matrices. Benefiting from this unique microstructure, zeolites@S adsorbents provide abundant pores and voids for absorbing Hg2+, and synchronously offer extra active sites for chemically trapping Hg2+ with sulfur. The pseudo-first-order kinetic/pseudo-second-order kinetic models and Langmuir/Freundlich isotherm models have been employed to study the adsorption behaviors and adsorption kinetic parameters. The results demonstrated that zeolites@S-15 (sulfur content = 15 wt%) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity and the best kinetic parameters for Hg2+ relative to other samples. This work will not only provide important reference for the rational design of zeolite based adsorbents for Hg2+ removal from aqueous solution, but also pave a new way to boost the commercialization of low-cost and high-efficiency functionalized adsorbents for purifying wastewater.

A novel dual-emission carbon dots-gold nanoclusters (CDs-AuNCs) nanohybrid was fabricated and successfully used in the visual and ratiometric fluorescent detection of mercury (II) ions. Boronic acid functionalized carbon dots (B-CDs) were synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method. Bovine serum albumin functionalized carbon dots (BSA-CDs) were then obtained by simply mixing the B-CDs with bovine serum albumin, aided by specific binding between the glycoprotein and boronic acid groups. Finally, the dual-emission nanohybrid was obtained by attaching AuNCs to the BSA-CDs template. The nanohybrid exhibited two well-resolved emission peaks at 440 nm and 655 nm under 360 nm excitation. The fluorescence of the BSA-CDs at 440 nm was insensitive to the presence of aqueous Hg 2+ , whereas the fluorescence of AuNCs at 655 nm could be completely quenched in the presence of Hg 2+ through Hg 2+ -Au + interactions. The fluorescence emission of the nanohybrid allowed sensitive and selective sensing of Hg 2+ in the range of 2–15 nM, with a detection limit of 0.73 nM. Importantly, the emission color of the nanohybrid changed from red to blue with increasing Hg 2+ concentration (due to corresponding changes in the I 440nm and I 655nm ratio), which could be clearly discerned by the naked eye.

A novel ratiometric fluorescent chemodosimeter REPN based on 1,8-naphthalimide-rhodamine was successfully synthesized. Two different strategies of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET) for ratiometric detection of Hg 2+ /Fe 3+ were designed into one sensing system. REPN exhibits typical FRET signal from pyridine-naphthalimide moiety to rhodamine moiety which was induced by Hg 2+ with a detection limit of 2.72 × 10 −6 M in EtOH/PBS buffer (1:1, v/v, pH = 7.4) solution. However, the probe REPN performed ratiometric detection behavior via PET process combined with the classical ring-opening sensor system in the presence of Fe 3+ , the detection limit was 5.7 × 10 −7 M. REPN emitted bright yellow fluorescence in solid state and the maximum emission wavelength was 538 nm. Besides, the silica nanoparticles loaded AIE dye REPN maintained and further reinforced the AIE effect with higher water solubility.

In this study, Hg 2+ ions were found to quench the fluorescence of glutathione (GSH)-capped copper clusters (Cu NCs). The Cu NCs were prepared by a simple reduction of CuSO 4 in the presence of GSH serving both as a reducing and protecting agents, and characterized by ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy (UV–vis), high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The GSH-Cu NCs displayed a small size, excellent water-dispersibility, good storage stability, good photostability and were stable in the presence of high concentrations of salt. The GSH-Cu NCs possessed strong blue fluorescence with a quantum yield of 10.6% and exhibited an excitation-independent fluorescence behavior. The zeta potential , TEM, resonance light scattering and dynamic light scattering measurements demonstrated that the Hg 2+ ion-induced aggregation of the Cu NCs contributed to the fluorescence quenching of the dispersed Cu NCs. On these findings, a sensitive and selective fluorescent probe was developed for detecting Hg 2+ in the linear range from 10 nM to 10 μM with a detection limit of 3.3 nM (S/N=3). The proposed method has been successfully applied to determine Hg 2+ content in water sample and food stuff. The results of the proposed method were in good agreement with those obtained by a hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS).

A cathodic “signal-on” method was developed for the photoelectrochemical detection of Hg 2+ ions. Here, ZnS quantum dots (QDs) capped with mercaptoacetic acid was assembled on the surface of an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode through electrostatic interaction between poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) and the ZnS QDs. HgS was formed on the ZnS surface by ion-exchange in the presence of Hg 2+ ions in solution. The cathodic photocurrent increased under visible light irradiation with a light-emitting diode lamp. This novel strategy exhibits high sensitivity and good selectivity owing to the low background signal and the benefits of ion-exchange technology. The cathodic photocurrent increases linearly with Hg 2+ concentration in the range 1 × 10 −11 –1 × 10 −6 M, providing a detection limit of 2 pM (S/N = 3). This sensor provides a promising new strategy for the detection of trace heavy metal ions.

A facile fluorescence “on-off-on” approach for sensing 6-Thioguanine (6-TG) and Hg 2+ was designed based on g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. It was found that in the absence of Hg 2+ , the addition of 6-TG to g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets solution resulted in the fluorescence quenching of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (turn off). However, in the presence of Hg 2+ , the quenched fluorescence of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets was recovered (turn on), because the high affinity of Hg 2+ and 6-TG resulted in the loss of molecular interactions between 6-TG and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. The quantitative detection of 6-TG was obtained via the fluorescence quenching of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets with a detection limit of 65 nM. Meantime, the 6-TG-g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets system could be used as a fluorescent “turn on” sensor for Hg 2+ . The detection limit for Hg 2+ was 37 nM. The proposed method showed high selectivity for the detection of 6-TG and Hg 2+ . In addition, it was successfully applied to detect Hg 2+ in real water samples.

A simple and sensitive electrochemical assay strategy of stripping voltammetry for mercury ions (Hg2+) detection is described based on the synergistic effect between ionic liquid functionalized graphene oxide (GO-IL) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs–GO-IL modified onto glassy carbon electrode (GCE) resulted in highly enhanced electron conductive nanostructured membrane and large electroactive surface area, which was excellently examined by scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry. After accumulating Hg2+, anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) was performed, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was employed for signal recording of Hg2+. Several main experimental parameters were optimized, i.e., deposition potential and time of AuNPs were −0.2 V and 180 s, respectively, and accumulation potential and time of Hg2+ were −0.3 V and 660 s, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, this AuNPs–GO-IL–GCE sensor attained a good linearity in a wide range of 0.1–100 nM (R = 0.9808) between the concentration of the Hg2+ standard and peak current. The limit of detection was estimated to be 0.03 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3σ. A variety of common coexistent ions in water samples were investigated, showing no obvious interferences on the Hg2+ detection. The practical application of the proposed sensor has been carried out and demonstrated as feasible for determination of trace levels of Hg2+ in drinking and environmental water samples.

A simple and facile method has been developed for the preparation of highly sensitive hollow spheric chemosensors. In this method, positively charged polystyrene (PS) particles were employed as templates to prepare silica hollow microspheres, and then the micro-sensors were grafted onto the hollow spheres to obtain hollow-chemosensors. A series of different SiO2 hollow spheres could be prepared by tuning the preparation conditions, and were used to carry the sensors. The hollow-chemosensors could not only detect Hg2+ ions, but were also able to separate them with high efficiency. When the hollow-chemosensors were added to Hg2+ ion solutions, the color of solution instantly changed from red to yellow and could be seen by naked eye. The adsorption capacity did not vary significantly over a wide pH range from 3 to 8. The hollow-chemosensors exhibited high selectivity for the detection of Hg2+ ions over other heavy metal ions. In addition, the superiority of using hollow silica spheres as carriers, which was promising for chemosensor detection, adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions in solution, could be clearly seen.

A rapid and sensitive fluorescence sensing system for melamine based on charge transfer quenching of the fluorescence of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in the presence of Hg2+ is proposed. The synthesized GQDs were strongly luminescent with predominantly aromatic sp2 domains. Melamine could coordinate with mercury through nitrogen atoms in both its amine and triazine groups and bring more Hg2+ to the surface of GQDs through π–π stacking, thus leading to quenching of the GQDs’ fluorescence. The quenching mechanism was investigated in detail and ascribed to charge transfer from the GQDs to Hg2+ with melamine acting as the linkage agent. The melamine demonstrated a linear range 0.15–20 μM and a detection limit of 0.12 μM, which was far below the regulatory level, suggesting the promising practical usage of this sensing system. This sensing system also possessed high selectivity for melamine in the presence of possible interferences. Finally, this novel sensor was successfully applied for melamine detection in raw milk and satisfactory recovery was achieved.

A facile one-pot method was proposed to synthesis cysteamine capped CdTe QDs with a high quantum yield 30%. In the synthesis process, nitrogen protection, ultrasonic treatment, and light irradiation were unnecessary. Additionally, potassium tellurite was used instead of Te powder as Te source, avoiding of the time-consuming Te powder dissolution process . The prepared QDs were found to be Hg 2+ sensitive. The detection linear range for Hg 2+ was from 5 to 300 nM, and the detection limit was calculated to be 1 nM. The detection mechanism was mainly ascribed to the electron transfer from cysteamine capped QDs to Hg 2+ , resulting in a fluorescence quenching phenomenon. In addition, we developed a portable RGB sensing gadget with the QDs as fluorescence probe for Hg 2+ detection, and the linear range was from 5 to 200 nM. Furthermore, the gadget was applied for Hg 2+ detection in tap water sample. The results showed that the average recoveries in real tap water sample were in the range from 97.2% to 115.3%, which indicated that accuracy and precision were satisfactory for practical application requirements.

Carbon dots have emerged as highly efficient and versatile fluorescent probes for detecting and quantifying Hg2+. This study reports a method to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) via ligand-to-metal charge transfer fluorescent quenching for Hg2+ detection. Besides the excitation-independent emission feature, the synthesized N-CDs demonstrate a high selectivity of Hg2+ over 23 potentially interfering environmental ions. The structures of 2-hydroxy-N,N-dimethylbenzamide and amide functional groups are identified as the determinants of the relatively high quantum yield (53.33%). N-CDs also exhibit a linear relationship with Hg2+ concentration in the range of 0.007–120 μM, with a limit of detection of 7.1 nM. The produced N-CDs can be employed in a customized microfluidic real-time monitoring platform, demonstrating the robustness in receiving efficient fluorescence signals with a satisfactory limit of detection. The acceptable accuracy and recovery of Hg2+ detection in tap water and river water highlight the potential practical applications of the synthesized N-CDs. Results in this study can facilitate the development of a portable device for early warning of water pollution.

A novel fluorescence sensor based on a porphyrinic zirconium-based metal–organic framework, L-cysteine-modified PCN-222 (L-Cys/PCN-222), was developed to selectively recognize histidine enantiomers and sensitively detect Hg2+. The dual-functional sensor was successfully prepared via the solvent-assisted ligand incorporation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analyses. L-Cys/PCN-222 not only showed a higher quenching response for L-histidine than that for D-histidine with a fast fluorescent response rate of <40 s but also exhibited low detection limits for L- and D-histidine (2.48 μmol L−1 and 3.85 μmol L−1, respectively). Moreover, L-Cys/PCN-222 was employed as a fluorescent and visual sensor for the highly sensitive detection of Hg2+ in the linear range of 10–500 μmol L−1, and the detection limit was calculated to be 2.79 μmol L−1 in surface water. The specific and selective recognition of chiral compounds and metal ions by our probe make it suitable for real field applications.
