La-doped Pt/TiO2 as an efficient catalyst for room temperature oxidation of low concentration HCHO

Honggen Peng,Jiawei Ying,Jingyan Zhang,Xianhua Zhang,Cheng Peng,Cheng Rao,Wenming Liu,Ning Zhang,Xiang Wang

Catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) is the most efficient way to purify indoor air of HCHO pollutant. This work investigated rare earth La-doped Pt/TiO 2 for low concentration HCHO oxidation at room temperature . La-doped Pt/TiO 2 had a dramatically promoted catalytic performance for HCHO oxidation. The reasons for the La promotion effect were investigated by N 2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, CO chemisorption , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark field scanning TEM . The Pt nanoparticle size was reduced to 1.7 nm from 2.2 nm after modification by La, which led to higher Pt dispersion, more exposed active sites and enhanced metal-support interaction. Thus a superior activity for indoor low concentration HCHO oxidation was obtained. Moreover, the La-doped TiO 2 can be wash-coated on a cordierite monolith so that very low amounts of Pt (0.01 wt%) can be used. The catalyst was evaluated in a simulated indoor HCHO elimination environment and displayed high purifying efficiency and stability. It can be potentially used as a commercial catalyst for indoor HCHO elimination.

Design of La-doped SmMn2O5/epoxy composite materials: multifunctional synergy for fire safety and electromagnetic shielding

Chaojun Yang,Zijian Feng,Zhe Dong,Yu Li

The development of polymer materials with flame-retardant and microwave-absorbing properties reduced fire risks and mitigated electromagnetic interference, representing an important direction in advanced materials research. In this work, La x Sm 1-x Mn 2 O 5 (xLSMO) mullite with varying La doping levels (molar ratio, x = 0.1, 0.3, 0.5) was synthesized via a co-precipitation method, and the effects of LSMO on the flame-retardant and microwave-absorbing properties of epoxy resin (EP) were investigated. The results demonstrated that LSMO exhibited excellent catalytic charring ability and a pronounced nucleating effect, effectively enhancing the compactness and strength of the char layer and thereby improving the fire safety of EP. When the La doping level was 0.3 and the LSMO loading in EP was 1wt%, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) increased from 24.1% to 32.3%, and a V-1 rating was achieved in the UL-94 test. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) were reduced by 45.32% and 32.69%, respectively. In addition, the incorporation of LSMO endowed EP with favorable electromagnetic wave absorption capability, with a minimum reflection loss reaching −36.87 dB in the frequency range of 1–18 GHz. Therefore, the EP/LSMO composites exhibited considerable potential as multifunctional integrated materials in the fields of public safety and electromagnetic protection technology.

Synthesis of La-Fe3O4@polydopamine core–shell magnetic composites for enhanced phosphate removal from aqueous solutions

Xinyu Cheng,Zhihua Xu,Chenxi Guo,Ting Zhou,Alang Zhang,Feng Shi

In this work, a lanthanum-doped Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA) core–shell composite was prepared via a hydrothermal method. XPS depth profiling revealed that La is uniformly distributed throughout the Fe3O4 particles, with a constant La/Fe ratio from the surface to 60 nm depth. The material exhibits superparamagnetic properties, enabling rapid magnetic separation within 30 s. Phosphate adsorption reaches equilibrium in 180 min, following pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 > 0.999) and the Sips isotherm, with a maximum capacity of 123.44 mg P per g. XPS analysis revealed shifts in the La 3d spectra consistent with inner-sphere La–P complexation, providing supportive evidence for chemisorption. The adsorbent retained >85% of its capacity after five cycles using 1 M NaCl as the eluent. Negligible La leaching (<0.01 µg L−1) and low aquatic toxicity to Chlorella sp. further support its environmental safety. These results demonstrate that 2.5%La-Fe3O4@PDA provides a robust, magnetically separable, and reusable platform for phosphate removal, offering deeper mechanistic insights into La-doping and PDA synergy in established magnetic core–shell systems.

Interface tuning and electrical property optimization of La-doped ZrO2 gate dielectric based on solution driving

Haotian Cai,Kamale Tuokedaerhan,Zhenchuan Lu,Renjia Zhang,Hongguo Du

With the development of thin-film optoelectronic components and the increasing requirements for improved integration and performance of ultra-large-scale integrated circuits for devices, finding new high-k gate dielectrics to replace ZrO 2 has become a challenge. Elemental doping is an effective method to further improve the dielectric properties of ZrO 2 . In this work, a novel gate dielectric material was prepared by doping ZrO 2 with the rare-earth element La. The results show that the new gate media material has better performance; these include suppressing the crystallization of ZrO 2 as well as obtaining a large band gap (∼5.74 eV), a large conduction band shift ΔE C (∼2.96 eV), and a low leakage current (∼6.3 × 10 −6 A/cm 2 ). In addition, La doping can significantly suppress the generation of thin-film oxygen vacancies and low-k layers. Furthermore, the leakage current transfer mechanism of the device is systematically investigated. This study provides new insights for selecting a suitable La doping content for the modification of future gate dielectric materials.

Porphyrin-based Fe/La metal-organic frameworks as photocatalysts for dye photodegradation: Syntheses and mechanism investigation

Chuncheng Shi,Zhixin Zhao,Ling Zhao,Aparna Kushwaha,Abhinav Kumar,Jun Wang,Ying Pan,Mohd. Muddassir,Qian Lan

Organic dyes are typical chemical reagents that find applications in printing, textile, leather, and other industries. However, their overuse and uncontrolled discharge in water bodies have a negative impact on the aquatic ecosystem and humans. Metal-organic frameworks are assorted multifunctional materials that find potential application as photocatalysts. In this work, the application of two porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (TCPP-La and Fe-TCPP-La) have been reported as photocatalytic materials to degrade dyes methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB). The results suggest that TCPP-La can eliminate 16 % MO and 23.7 % MB in 125 min under UV irradiation of 385 nm. On the other hand, only 4.8 % MO and 16 % MB were removed by Fe-TCPP-La under the same condition. However, when hydrogen peroxide (2 % H 2 O 2 ) was added to the reaction medium, the degradation activity of TCPP-La was improved upto 26 % for MO and 61 % for MB, while, Fe-TCPP-La exhibits more enhancement in photocatalytic degradation upto 55 % for MO and 93 % for MB. The result implied that introducing ferric ions using post-synthetic strategy to engender both lanthanum and iron centers into the framework could improve the photocatalytic performance of the MOF against dye photodegradation.

Selective and efficient production of 1,5-pentanediol from tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol using Ni-La(OH)3 catalysts

Wenqi Zhao,Xiaowei Bai,Xiangrui Lin,Yalkunjan Tur sun,Mei Zhong,Zhenghua Dai,Jian Li

Biomass-derived furfural and its derivatives are promising feedstocks for producing valuable C 5 diols by catalytic hydrolysis. However, this process requires selective ring opening of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) to 1,5-pentanediol, which is challenging. Here we report efficient route for this conversion using Ni-La(OH) 3 catalysts prepared by a green co-precipitation-hydrothermal method. We show that these catalysts can achieve up to 91.7% yield and 94.6% selectivity of 1,5-pentanediol from THFA under mild conditions. We elucidate the key role of the La(OH) 3 phase, the basic sites and the Ni n+ -O-La 3+ structure of the catalysts in promoting the selective hydrogenolysis and ring opening of THFA. We also demonstrate that the co-dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols enables lower reaction pressure and longer catalyst lifetime. Our work provides a sustainable and environmentally benign approach for producing 1,5-pentanediol from biomass-based furfural and its derivatives, which has potential applications in polymer synthesis and green chemistry.

Removal of La(III) by amino-phosphonic acid functionalized polystyrene microspheres prepared via electron beam irradiation

Tao Chen,Ning Sun,Yuan Zhao,Jie Gao,Guowen Hu,Xiaobing Han,Yayang Tian,Linfeng Chen,Guobao Huang,Bing Li

A new aminophosphonic acid chelating resin was successfully prepared via electron beam irradiation grafting combined with chemical modification and used for the efficient removal of La(III). Firstly, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was grafted to polystyrene microspheres (PS) via electron beam co-radiation to obtain PS-PGMA microspheres, then followed by the amination with diethylenetriamine (DETA) to formed PS-PGMA-DETA (PGD) microspheres through nucleophilic substitution between amino and epoxy group, and finally PS-PGMA-DETA-PA (PGDP) microspheres was obtained by phosphorylation with phosphorous acid (PA). The obtained chelating resin absorbent was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which demonstrated that the millimetric aminophosphonic acid chelating resin were successfully prepared with well-defined morphology and enhanced thermal stability. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization results confirmed a possible adsorption mechanism, which is mainly based on the chelation and coordination of N and O in PDGP with La(III) in the solution. A series of parameters were taken into account in the adsorption experiment, such as absorbed dose, GMA concentration, dosage of PGDP, pH, contact time, temperature, and the initial concentrations of La(III). The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the research can be achieved 288.69 mg/g at 298.15 K, pH = 6. The kinetic sorption for for La(III) fitted the type 1 pseudo-second-order (R 2  = 0.9981), which revealed that the La(III) are chemisorbed on the surface of the PGDP. It was concluded that the La(III) adsorption conformed to the Freundlich equation, indicating a multilayer adsorption process. Thermodynamic data indicated that the La(III) uptake process was a spontaneous and endothermic. In addition, this research provided a new irradiation grafting method for rare earth ions removal.

Jinkai Shu,Bozhi Ren,Wei Zhang,An Wang,Sen Lu,Shuyu Liu

Modified Shell Powder/La-Fe-TiO2(La-Fe-TiO2@MSP) composites were fabricated using the sol-gel method and characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-vis DRS and photocurrent techniques, and their physicochemical and optical properties were analyzed. The effects of various factors on the photocatalytic degradation of pyridine and its reaction kinetics were investigated by batch experiments using pyridine, a typical nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound in coal chemical wastewater, as the target removal species. The pyridine degradation rate of 80.23% was obtained for 800 mg/L composite solution by photocatalytic oxidation of 50 mg/L pyridine wastewater for 180 min at 35 °C, pH = 8 and light intensity of 560 W. The photocatalytic degradation performance was optimal. The quenching experiments determined that the active species of photodegradation were mainly hole and hydroxyl radicals, and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism was analyzed in this way.Keywords:La-Fe-TiO2@MSP;photocatalysis;pyridine;reaction kinetics

Weitao Wang,Ruoxin Wang,Xulu Jiang,Zhen-Hong He,Kuan Wang,Yang Yang,Zhao-Tie Liu

It is desirable but challenging to explore non-noble metal based catalyst for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. La y Co 1 O x was prepared through a co-precipitation method, which exhibited excellent catalytic performance for titled reaction with a yield of 73.1% and selectivity of 99.6%. Introduction of La in the Co 3 O 4 can modify the electronic property of Co, improving the surface Co 3+ content and enhancing the activity. The synergistic effects of La and Co in the bimetallic catalysts are kinetically discussed. In addition, the kinetic and experimental studies revealed that the generated water favors the selectivity but suppresses the activity for the titled reaction. It is found that good activity and excellent selectivity for the (heterocyclic)aromatic alcohols aerobic selective oxidation over the bimetallic catalyst were obtained.

Co(OH)2 nanosheets decorated with La-CoP nanorod array for alkaline electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Yaoxia Yang,Xingwei Guo,Mi Kang,Dangxia Wang,Zhiwang Yang

Developing efficient and inexpensive catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for the commercial viability of electrochemical sustainable energy technologies. In this study, a La-CoP/Co(OH)2 nanoarray supported on nickel foam (NF) was successfully prepared using the secondary hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating method. The as-prepared La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF material exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution performance in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential of La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF was 114 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and the Tafel slope was estimated to be 99 mV dec−1. The decoration of Co(OH)2 nanosheets on La-CoP nanorods with the textured surface not only provides a large surface area and more active sites but also promotes the transfer of electrons between Co(OH)2 and La-CoP, which accelerates the reaction rate and further improve the HER performance of the composite material. Additionally, the fabricated catalyst exhibits good stability and durability in alkaline media. This approach provides a feasible and effective strategy for exploring electrocatalysts with high efficiency and low prices for the electrolysis of water.

Biochar/Mg-Al spinel carboxymethyl cellulose-La hydrogels with cationic polymeric layers for selective phosphate capture

Xiangcheng Shan,Liyu Yang,Yumeng Zhao,Huarong Yang,Zuoyi Xiao,Qingda An,Shangru Zhai

Recently, biochar-related phosphate sorbents have been extensively investigated and achieved significant progress; however, there is still much room for enhancement on capturing performance and recovery of powdery ones after sorption. Herein, a new kind of adsorbent, in which biochar/Mg-Al spinel encapsulated in carboxymethyl cellulose-La hydrogels with cationic polymeric layers, was fabricated, aiming for integrating multi-advantages of each component for enhanced phosphate capture. Batch static experiments were correlated to the phosphate adsorption performance of the adsorbent. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 89.65 mg P/g at pH = 3. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted well with the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent. More importantly, this composite adsorbent that integrated with biochar, Mg-Al spinel, cationic polymeric components exhibited favorable selectivity over coexisting anions (Cl - , SO 4 2- , HCO 3 – and NO 3 – ) and performed good reusability after five consecutive cycles. By virtue of the bead-like feature, fixed-bed column experiments demonstrated that the Thomas model fitted the breakthrough curves well under varied experimental conditions. The adsorption mechanism of phosphate on the designed composite adsorbent with multi-components could be described as the electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and inner-sphere complexation, which might account for the efficient phosphate capturing performance.

Mesoporous La-based nanorods synthesized from a novel IL-SFME for phosphate removal in aquatic systems

Jie Xu,Yongmei Cui,Rui Wang,Ziyi Shi,Chunxing Wu,Dongxiang Li

La-based nanorods with large mesopores were synthesized at a low temperature (35 °C) in a reverse surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME). The SFME consisted of hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL) propylammonium formate (PAF), hydrophobic IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF 6 ), and protic IL diethylammonium formate (DEAF), corresponding to the water phase, oil phase, and amphi-solvent, respectively. This IL-SFME, as a new microemulsion, was formed by the three ionic liquids without any volatile organic solvents . The morphology and properties of the La-based material were investigated utilizing transmission electron microscope , X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy , thermogravimetric analysis , specific surface analysis , and zeta potential measurements. The obtained complex was lanthanum methanoate La(COOH) 3 which exhibited a large specific BET surface area (47.71 m 2 /g) and high pH pzc (11.63), assuming a remarkable removal ability on phosphate in aqueous solutions within a wide range of pH values. This paper presents a facile, non-toxic, and energy-efficient route of the material, owing to the absence of both surfactant and high temperature treatment usually adapted in other literatures. The adsorption of the La(COOH) 3 nanorods for phosphate was investigated by changing adsorbent dosage, initial phosphate concentration, contact time, and pH value. The sorption kinetics and isotherms of phosphate on the La-based adsorbent could be explained by the pseudo second-order and Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of the product was 381.6 mg PO 4 3– /g, evidently higher than usual phosphate adsorbents. The study on the mechanism revealed that the adsorption mainly comes from the precipitation, electrostatic interaction, and ligand exchange. The adsorbed phosphate could nearly be desorbed by NaOH solution for reusability. To summarize, the synthesized mesoporous La-based nanorods unfolds a promising application in the phosphate adsorption.
