Polydopamine-primed FeCo-LDH endowed epoxy resin with enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical properties

Xiao-Hui Shi,Hong Shi,Xue-Lin Li,Shi-Jie Wu,Wei-Min Xie,De-Yi Wang

The integration of layered double metal hydroxides (LDH) into epoxy resin (EP) for flame retardancy is in line with the principles of environmentally friendly and sustainable development. In this study, polydopamine (PDA)-primed intercalated LDH containing iron and cobalt ions (LDH-DBS@PDA) was prepared, and its chemical composition, structure and morphology were thoroughly characterized. Due to the synergistic flame-retardant properties exhibited by LDH and PDA, as well as the catalytic charring properties of iron and cobalt ions in both condensed and gaseous phases, EP composite with 5 wt% LDH-DBS@PDA achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating with a limiting oxygen index of 30.7 %. Moreover, EP/LDH-DBS@PDA exhibited a significant decrease in total heat release by 48 % and smoke release by 52 %, demonstrating remarkable fire safety performance. Additionally, the existence of LDH-DBS@PDA improved impact strength , tensile strength , and glass transition temperature due to strong interactions between PDA and EP matrix. This work presents a promising strategy for developing highly efficiency flame retardants with excellent compatibility for polymeric materials.

Reinforcement of electrocatalytic overall water splitting by constructing Mo-doped NiFe LDH/NiS heterostructure

Zehui Liu,Jinzhao Huang,Feng Jiao,Ke Zhang,Guixin Zhao,Xiaolong Deng

Electrochemical water splitting is considered to be an environmentally friendly and efficient method of hydrogen production. NiFe LDH is a well-known electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution, yet its effectiveness in HER has been suboptimal. In this research, we created a Mo-NiFe LDH@NiS catalyst on carbon cloth via cation doping and heterointerface construction of NiFe LDH. The resulting Mo-NiFe LDH@NiS/CC showed remarkable HER activity. Furthermore, when used as a bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, Mo-NiFe LDH@NiS/CC operated at a cell voltage of 1.58 V at a current density of 10 mA/cm² and exhibited outstanding durability. This study emphasizes the significant enhancement in HER and overall water-splitting efficiency of NiFe LDH achieved through Mo doping and heterostructure engineering, advancing its potential for effective water splitting applications.

Tuning interfacial compatibility of LDH nanoparticles and polyamide membranes for improving forward osmosis performance

Yanfei Liu,Junjun Li,Liqiang Shen,Peng Zhang,Hong Yang,Peng Lu,Xingzhong Cao,Genliang Ji,Yanshuo Li

A thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) polyamide (PA) membrane is an emerging class of composite membrane that incorporates nanoparticles (NPs) into the PA layer via interfacial polymerization. However, poor interfacial compatibility between the NPs and the PA matrix often compromises desalination selectivity. Here, we fabricated TFN membranes containing layered double hydroxide (LDH) NPs intercalated with butyrate (NaB) ions to improve interfacial compatibility with the PA layer. The prepared TFN NaB series membranes demonstrated superior interfacial interaction, resulting in significantly improved water permeance (up to 5.23 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ) and moderate NaCl rejection (up to 94 %) in the reverse osmosis. Additionally, the TFN NaB series membranes provided the higher water (48.74 L m −2  h −1 in PRO mode) and ethanol (3.94 L m −2  h −1 ) fluxes in forward osmosis (FO) and organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) systems, demonstrating their enhanced versatility for osmotic filtration performance. This work addressed the limitations of LDH-based TFN membranes and highlights the significance of anion engineering within LDH NPs. Overall, this work offers a promising strategy to improve permeability and desalination performance of TFN membranes for FO and OSFO applications.

Qian Lu,Xinyi Wan,Yujie Hou,Yuli Zhang,Zhiliang Guo,Yifan Zhang,Changgan Lai,Lixu Lei

We have proposed a cost-effective method to make a membrane for alkaline water electrolysis by combining organic polymers with inorganic materials, to achieve high ionic conductivity, excellent alkaline stability, and superior electrochemical properties. In this study, NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) powders synthesized hydrothermally, mixed with 2 wt% ZrO 2 are physically crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel to form a ZrO 2 /NiFe-LDH@PVA slurry. The slurry has been coated onto a non-woven fabric to reduce being oxidated by the anodic active substances during the electrolysis process, also, a layer of nylon gauze is sandwiched to improve its mechanical properties. The resulted membrane exhibited exceptional mechanical strength (24.9 MPa tensile strength) and remarkable hydroxide ion conductivity (86.52 mS cm −1 at 90 °C). Furthermore, NiCo/NM and NiFe/NM catalysts were electrodeposited and integrated with the ZrO 2 /LDH@PVA composite membrane to assemble an alkaline water electrolysis device. When tested in 6 M KOH electrolyte at 70 °C and 2.0 V, the device achieved a current density of 781 mA cm −2 and maintained stable operation for at least 400 h.

Vertically Ti3CN@NiFe LDH Nanoflakes as Self-Standing Catalysts for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Lei He,Qing Tang,Qi Fan,Haizheng Zhuang,Shengchao Wang,Yifan Pang,Kun Liang

Hydrogen production from water electrolysis is gaining interest as a source of renewable energy storage due to its high efficiency and low environmental impact. However, the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits the overall efficiency of electrolyzer systems. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a novel electrocatalyst with a vertical structure, composed of Ti3CN MXene-modified NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) supported on nickel foam (NF) for efficient OER applications. The 1.0-LDH/3MXNF catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity, achieving a low overpotential of 247 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2and a favorable Tafel slope of 67.7 mV/dec. This can be attributed to the transfer of excess electrons from Ti3CN MXene to NiFe-LDH, which reduces the oxidation states of Ni and Fe, resulting in a strong interfacial coupling between Ti3CN MXene and NiFe-LDHs. Additionally, the electrode exhibited exceptional stability, maintaining constant performance with minimal potential degradation over prolonged operation. These findings underscore the potential of hybrid LDH-MXene systems as advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications, paving the way for further innovations in energy conversion technologies.

Synergistic design of ZIF-67/Sn-doped NiFe-LDH for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Rana Ahmed,Abeer Enaiet Allah,Ahmed A. Farghali,Waleed M. A. El Rouby,Abdalla Abdelwahab

The development of efficient and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for advancing water-splitting technologies. In this study, we report the synthesis of a Sn-doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) integrated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)-derived Co species (NiFe-LDH-Sn/ZIF-67) as an efficient catalyst for the OER. The doping of Sn into NiFe-LDH enhances the electronic conductivity and optimizes the active sites for the OER. Concurrently, the introduction of ZIF-67 promotes structural stability and increases the surface area to 727 m2 g−1, fostering synergistic interactions between the components. The NiFe-LDH-Sn/ZIF-67 catalyst exhibits a significantly lower potential of 1.59 V vs. RHE at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 79 mV dec−1 in alkaline media. The study reveals that Sn doping facilitates the electron transfer process by reducing the equivalent series resistance (ESR) from 325 Ω to 161 Ω, while ZIF-67 improves charge redistribution and catalytic stability by 91.8% after 24 h. This study underscores the potential of combining LDH and metal–organic frameworks to design advanced catalysts for sustainable energy applications.

Structural Regulation of NiFe LDH under Spontaneous Corrosion to Enhance the Oxygen Evolution Properties

Yingjun Ma,Hangning Liu,Lin Wang,Changhui Sun,Liangyu Gong,Jie Wang,Xiaogang Zhang

Electrochemical water splitting holds promise for sustainable hydrogen production but restricted by the sluggish reaction kinetics at the anodic oxygen evolution. Herein, we present a room-temperature spontaneous corrosion strategy to convert inexpensive iron (Fe) on iron foam substrates into highly active and stable self-supporting nickel iron layered hydroxide (NiFe LDH) catalysts. The corrosion evolution mechanisms are elucidated combining ex-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, demonstrating precise control over the concentration of Ni2+ and reaction time to achieve controllable micro-structures of NiFe LDH. Taking advantage of the self-supporting morphology and hierarchical micro-/nano- structure, the NiFe LDH with optimized Ni2+ concentration and reaction time exhibits significant small overpotentials of 160 mV and 200 mV for the OER at current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2 respectively, showcasing excellent OER activities. Furthermore, this catalyst demonstrates superior reaction kinetics, high electrochemical stability, and excellent integral water splitting performance when coupled with a commercial Pt/C cathode. The energy-efficient, cost-effective, and scalable spontaneous corrosion strategy opens new avenues for the development of high-electrochemical-interface catalysts.

Yuzheng Li,Chengxiao Xu,Daming Li,Yingjie Zhang,Guoxu Ni,Songshi Xu,Bo Liu,Peipei Huo

Layered bimetallic hydroxide (LDH) has garnered significant attention due to its outstanding redox activity, making it a highly promising candidate as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. In this study, a CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposite was skillfully fabricated through a one-step hydrothermal and ultrasonic treatment, involving the integration of CoSn-LDH microspheres onto Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. CoSn-LDH was incorporated into the MXene interlayers via electrostatic adsorption, ensuring uniform dispersion, thereby preventing further MXene stacking and simultaneously increasing the interlayer distance. The exceptional electrical conductivity of MXene, combined with the abundant active sites provided by CoSn-LDH, synergistically enhances ion and electron transfer, resulting in the remarkable electrochemical performance of CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposites in sodium storage. An initial specific capacity of 976.1 mAh g–1 was achieved at 0.1 A g–1, with a remarkable capacity retention of 97.29% observed even after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g–1. The superior electrochemical performance of the CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposites can be attributed to the synergistic interplay between the robust redox-active LDH structure and the highly conductive MXene network. These findings suggest that CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposites hold significant promise for the advancement of sodium storage materials.

Ultrathin CuZnCr-LDH nanosheets for photo-Fenton synergistic degradation of ciprofloxacin and methylene blue

Zetian He,Tie Shi,Daimei Chen,Yuxin Wang,Yanmei Feng,Fengshan Zhou,Yilei Li

The extensive use and improper disposal of antibiotics and organic dyes have resulted in their substantial release into the natural environment, posing a grave threat to both the ecological system and human health. This study successfully synthesised an ultra-thin CuZnCr layered ternary hydrotalcite (CuZnCr-LDH) nanosheet, exhibiting remarkable photo-Fenton properties, through a streamlined one-step coprecipitation method. When the ratio of Cu + to Zn 2+ is 2:1, methylene blue (MB) degradation efficiency reaches 96.5 % after 70 min, and that of CIP attains 75 % after 3 h, and the mineralization rate can be as high as 81.3 % and 64.7 %. The key to enhancing its performance is that the ultrathin structure is conducive to carrier migration, a large number of photogenerated electrons are conducive to the recovery of valence states of Cu and Cr ions to promote Fenton reaction cycle, and the rich active species actively participate in the reaction. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signaling and active material capture experiments have shown that photogenerated superoxide radicals (‧O 2 - ), hydroxyl radicals (‧OH) and holes (h + ) as active species play a crucial role in the degradation process. And the cyclic pattern of the high-priced metal was verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) testing, which is a key factor in the photo-Fenton synergy. Based on the experimental results, the photo-Fenton degradation mechanism is proposed. This study holds important promise in addressing the pressing problem of water pollution caused by antibiotics and organic pollutants.

Polyaniline-ZnTi-LDH heterostructure with d–π coupling for enhanced photocatalysis of pollutant removal

Chaowei Luo,Jie Xiong,Hongyan Zeng,Mengchen Liao

Heterointerface engineering is an effective strategy to design and construct high-performance photocatalysts. Herein, polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles and ZnTi layered double hydroxide (ZnTi-LDH) nanosheets were integrated to form organic–inorganic heterostructure (PANI/LDH) via d – π electronic coupling using in-situ polymerization for photocatalytic oxidation/reduction towards tetracycline (TC) and Cr(VI). The photocatalytic activity was closely related to feed amount of aniline (Ani) in the polymerization process, which the abundant PANI nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of ZnTi-LDH nanosheets at the proper Ani feed amount, and thus reinforced d –π electronic coupling at the organic–inorganic interfaces more efficiently. Density functional theory calculations further verified the existence of d –π overlap at the PANI/LDH heterointerface. The strong d –π coupling boosted charge separation and transfer to improve photocatalytic efficiency. As a result, the optimal PANI/LDH (0.3) exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activities with 97.8 % Cr(VI) reducing rate and 87.8 % TC removal rate in the single Cr(VI) and TC system, as well as high simultaneous removal rate of Cr(VI) and TC in TC/Cr(VI) coexistence system, respectively. Subsequently, the photocatalytic enhanced mechanisms were put forward to remove Cr(VI) and TC under visible-light. Finally, the aquatic toxicity of the photolytic products was evaluated using Chlorella sp. as an ecological indicator, showing that the PANI/LDH had a notable detoxification efficiency of TC and Cr(VI).

Degradation of Rhodamine B by Peroxymonosulfate Activated with a NiFe-LDH@CoFe-PBA Composite

Chunmiao Fan,Dengjie Zhong,Yunlan Xu

In this study, CoFe-PBA-loaded NiFe-LDH (NiFe-LDH@CoFe-PBA) was synthesized and employed to catalyze peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade rhodamine B (RhB). That the composite material was successfully synthesized was confirmed through complementary characterization techniques including energy-dispersive spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The elimination efficiency of RhB reached 98.99% within 15 min under the conditions of an initial RhB concentration of 50 mg L–1, a catalyst concentration of 0.2 g L–1, a PMS concentration of 0.2 g L–1, and an initial pH of 6.36. The characterization results revealed that CoFe-PBA improved the dispersibility of NiFe-LDH and exposed more active sites, which made NiFe-LDH@CoFe-PBA have higher current density and electron transfer ability. In the composite, Co, Fe, and Ni were the catalytic centers to activate PMS, and the redox between Co3+/Co2+, Fe3+/Fe2+, and Ni3+/Ni2+ enhanced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS: 1O2, O2•–, •OH, and SO4•–). Among them, 1O2 was determined to be the predominant reactive species responsible for RhB degradation. This study proposes a novel methodology for designing and synthesizing simple, efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly heterogeneous metal-based catalysts.
