In this report, carbon nanodots (CDs) with tunable full-color emission were successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method. By changing the carbon source (p-phenylenediamine or o-phenylenediamine) and the concentration, green, yellow, orange and red CDs (GCDs, YCDs, OCDs and RCDs) were successfully fabricated. As the concentration of the starting materials was increased, the emission peak was red-shifted. The shifted peaks showed strong intensity and an obvious color change. This concentration-dependent effect was attributed to the reabsorption phenomenon. Carbon source was critical in determining the fluorescence properties and the quantum yield (QY) of full-color CDs was high. The CDs also presented a distinct pH sensitivity. The PL intensity of RCDs showed linear decreases over decreasing pH from 11 to 4 and from 4 to 2. Fluorescent oil carrying CDs was successfully applied for various purposes such as anti-counterfeiting, information encryption and storage purposes. An RCD film was successfully fabricated that could improve the correlated color temperature and color rendering index of white light-emitting diodes.

Single-composition Ba 2 Y 2 Si 4 O 13 :Bi 3+ ,Eu 3+ (BYSO:Bi 3+ ,Eu 3+ ) phosphors with color-tunable and white emission were prepared by conventional high temperature solid-state reaction method. The structural and luminescent properties of these phosphors were thoroughly investigated through X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and decay curves. BYSO:Bi 3+ phosphors show two excitation peaks at 342 and 373 nm, and give two emission peaks at 414 and 503 nm, respectively, indicating that there are two sites of Bi 3+ in BYSO. The energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Eu 3+ was investigated in detail. Varied hues from blue (chromaticity coordinate [0.219, 0.350]) to white (0.288, 0.350) and orange-red light (0.644, 0.341) can be generated by adjusting the content of Eu 3+ . Pure white light emission (0.311, 0.338) can be obtained under the excitation of 355 nm in BYSO:3%Bi 3+ ,20%Eu 3+ phosphor. Besides, BYSO:Bi 3+ ,Eu 3+ phosphors exhibit distinct thermal quenching properties, whose emission intensity at 473 K is 82.6% of that at 298 K. Our results indicate that BYSO:Bi 3+ ,Eu 3+ may be applied as conversion phosphors for n-UV-based W-LEDs.

Phosphor-converted white LEDs are realized by combining blue InGaN chips with yellow and red emitting materials. Due to the lack of efficient red phosphor materials, we can design a broadband yellow phosphor material containing as many red components as possible. We found an abnormal broadband yellow-emitting Ba 2 CaB 2 Si 4 O 14 :Eu 2+ borosilicate phosphor inspired by natural minerals, which has been synthesized by traditional high temperature solid-state method. The structural information and photoluminescence characteristics of Ba 2 CaB 2 Si 4 O 14 :Eu 2+ were characterized in detail, and applied to the fabrication of white LED devices. Excited by near ultraviolet light at 365 nm, it displays a wide emission band from 400 to 800 nm centered on the 595 nm peak. White LED devices were fabricated by physically mixing the yellow phosphor Ba 2 CaB 2 Si 4 O 14 :Eu 2+ and synthesized blue phosphor BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ with 365 nm UV chip as excitation. The correlation color temperature (CCT) value and the chromaticity coordinates of the fabricated WLED devices were found to be 5522 K and (0.3293, 0.3036) respectively. In conclusion, Ba 2 CaB 2 Si 4 O 14 :Eu 2+ has great potential in the preparation of near UV excited white LEDs.

A series of novel blue-emitting Sr 3 CeNa(PO 4 ) 3 F:Eu 2+ (SCNPOF:Eu 2+ ) phosphors were synthesized through solid-state reaction. The as-prepared phosphor shows a blue light emission ranging from 350 ~ 550 nm centered at 447 nm under 340 nm UV light excitation, attributed to the 4f-5d transition of Eu 2+ . The energy transfer mechanism from Ce 3+ to Eu 2+ was identified as dipole–dipole interaction, and the energy transfer efficiency and critical distance were calculated. Subsequently, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) with a color rendering index of 94 was fabricated by combining a 365 nm UV-LED chip with the as-prepared blue-emitting SCNPOF:Eu 2+ phosphor, commercial green (Ba, Sr) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ phosphor, and red CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ phosphor. The results indicate that the SCNPOF:Eu 2+ phosphors have potential application in UV-based WLEDs.

Group III–V semiconductor-based microscale light-emitting diode (micro-LED) displays are recognized as one of the most promising display technologies with superhigh brightness and resolution, strong contrast, and superlarge color gamut but currently suffer from low efficiency, low production yield, and high cost. Here, it is proposed to realize cost-effective and full-color micro-LED displays by using microscale perovskite quantum dot LEDs (micro-PeLEDs) as emitters. Bright and uniform red-, green-, and blue-emitting (RGB) micro-PeLED arrays with each pixel size as small as 45 µm are fabricated by in situ inkjet printing a perovskite quantum dot (PeQD) emissive layer in the structure of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/PeQD/1,3,5-tris(1-phenyl-1 H -benzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBi)/LiF/Al. These RGB micro-PeLED arrays display an external quantum efficiency of 0.832%, 0.419%, and 0.052% for red, green, and blue colors, a resolution of 210 PPI, and a wide color gamut (135% of the National Television Standards Committee standard). The authors further demonstrate flexible and full-color active-matrix micro-PeLED displays, which have potential applications in future ultrahigh-definition displays, light communication, and artificial intelligence.

Perovskite nanocrystal (PeNC) arrays are showing a promising future in the next generation of micro-light-emitting-diode (micro-LED) displays due to the narrow emission linewidth and adjustable peak wavelength. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet printing, with merits of high resolution, uniformity, versatility, and cost-effectiveness, is among the competent candidates for constructing PeNC arrays. However, the fabrication of red light-emitting CsPbBrxI(3–x) nanocrystal arrays for micro-LED displays still faces challenges, such as low brightness and poor stability. This work proposes a design for a red PeNC colloidal ink that is specialized for the EHD inkjet printing of three-dimensional PeNC arrays with enhanced luminescence and stability as well as being adaptable to both rigid and flexible substrates. Made of a mixture of PeNCs, polymer polystyrene (PS), and a nonpolar xylene solvent, the PeNC colloidal ink enables precise control of array sizes and shapes, which facilitates on-demand micropillar construction. Additionally, the inclusion of PS significantly increases the brightness and environmental stability. By adopting this ink, the EHD printer successfully fabricated full-color 3D PeNC arrays with a spatial resolution over 2500 ppi. It shows the potential of the EHD inkjet printing strategy for high-resolution and robust PeNC color conversion layers for micro-LED displays.

Hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanomaterials that possess an extensive specific surface area, negatively charged properties, high thermal conductivity, and excellent chemical characteristics, have significant advantages for water purification and energy storage. They are typically considered as potential catalysts due to their wide tunable bandgap. Here, carbon nitride (CN) modified BN (CMBN), which facilitated the formation of new C N B bonds, was successfully synthesized using a facile hydrothermal-calcination synthesis strategy. Such highly active bonds made the photocatalyst responsive to a wider range of wavelengths (e.g., ultraviolet to visible blue light), while significantly enhancing photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of enrofloxacin (ENFX). A 3-CMBN sample exhibited 39.3 times, and 2.4 times, higher photocatalytic properties than that of pristine BN and CN, respectively. The remarkable response of 5, 5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolidone -N- oxyl (DMPOX) was investigated through electron spin resonance spectroscopy (EPR) with 3-CMBN, which indicated higher oxidability than BN and CN under blue LED irradiation. Reactive species scavenging experiments revealed that the photodegradation of ENFX was dominated by electron holes and O 2 − . Moreover, the byproducts of ENFX were detected by HPLC-Q-TOF and GC–MS, probable pathways toward these byproducts were deduced, and repeated tests confirmed good stability. These results provided a new strategy to guide the enhanced design of advanced photocatalysts with active chemical bonding species, which can be applied to environmental remediation.

Carbon dots (CDs) with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties have been widely applied in various fields. However, achieving multicolor phosphorescence with high stability remains a significant challenge. In this study, a simple synthetic strategy was developed to prepare RTP CDs composites (CDs@SiO2–Urea) by using trimesic acid (TMA) as the carbon source, with urea and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) serving as a coconstructed rigid matrix. CDs@SiO2–Urea exhibits bright blue RTP after UV light is turned off, with a lifetime of 406 ms and visible to the naked eye for 6 s. Notably, owing to the synergistic protective effect of the urea and APTES matrices, CDs@SiO2–Urea demonstrates high stability in water, organic solvents, and strong acidic and alkaline environments while still maintaining excellent RTP properties. Additionally, based on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism, brilliant green (BG), rhodamine 6G (Rh6G), and rhodamine B (RhB) were introduced to the CDs@SiO2–Urea system, successfully achieving green, yellow, and red multicolor fluorescence and phosphorescence emission. Finally, utilizing the unique optical properties of the prepared samples, the materials were successfully applied to anticounterfeiting encryption and white light-emitting diode (W-LED) devices. These devices maintain high luminance intensity and a stable color rendering index (CRI) during long-time operation, highlighting the strong potential of RTP CD composites for commercial applications.

Light-emitting diode (LED) technology has emerged as an eco-friendly antimicrobial strategy for postharvest preservation. This study identified Cladosporium cladosporioides as a novel postharvest pathogen in Ehime Kashi No.28 citrus and systematically investigated the wavelength-dependent antifungal effects of LED irradiation. At 120 μmol m −2 s −1 intensity, white and blue spectra significantly suppressed C. cladosporioides mycelial growth by 35.5 % compared to the dark control, outperforming red/green wavelengths. Further investigation revealed that C. cladosporioides exposed to white and blue LED irradiation (120 μmol m −2 s −1 ) underwent apoptosis, concomitant with suppressed mycelial proliferation and conidial germination. These effects correlated mechanistically with a triad of cellular disruptions, including loss of membrane integrity, ultrastructural disorganization of organelles, and substantial oxidative stress-induced damage. Crucially, in vivo trials demonstrated 53.6 % (white LED irradiation) and 56.8 % (blue LED irradiation) reductions in citrus lesion diameters while maintaining fruit quality. The dual functionality of wavelength-specific pathogen suppression and quality preservation positions LED irradiation as a sustainable, non-thermal method for citrus postharvest management.

The growing demand for spectroscopy applications in the areas of agriculture, retail and healthcare has led to extensive research on infrared light sources. The ability of phosphors to absorb blue light from commercial LED and convert the excitation energy into long-wavelength infrared luminescence is crucial for the design of cost-effective and high-performance phosphor-converted infrared LEDs. However, the lack of ideal blue-pumped short-wave infrared (SWIR) phosphors with an emission peak longer than 900 nm greatly limits the development of SWIR LEDs using light converter technology. Here we have developed a series of SWIR-emitting materials with high luminescence efficiency and excellent thermal stability by co-doping Cr 3+ -Yb 3+ ion pairs into Lu 0.2 Sc 0.8 BO 3 host materials. Benefitting from strong light absorption of Cr 3+ in the blue waveband and very efficient Cr 3+ →Yb 3+ energy transfer, the as-synthesized Lu 0.2 Sc 0.8 BO 3 :Cr 3+ ,Yb 3+ phosphor emits intense SWIR light in the 900–1200 nm from Yb 3+ under excitation with blue light at ~460 nm. The optimized phosphor presents an internal quantum yield of 73.6% and the SWIR luminescence intensity at 100 °C can still keep 88.4% of the starting value at 25 °C. SWIR LED prototype device based on Lu 0.2 Sc 0.8 BO 3 :Cr 3+ ,Yb 3+ phosphor exhibits exceptional luminescence performance, delivering SWIR radiant power of 18.4 mW with 9.3% of blue-to-SWIR power conversion efficiency and 5.0% of electricity-to-SWIR light energy conversion efficiency at 120 mA driving current. Moreover, under the illumination of high-power SWIR LED, covert information identification and night vision lighting have been realized, demonstrating a very bright prospect for practical applications.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used for artificial lighting in plant factories and have been applied for disease prevention and for accelerating plant growth. In this study, a unique dual-emitting core–shell CDs/CaAlSiN3:Eu2+-silica powder was prepared by a one-pot sol–gel method. LED devices with multi-wavelength emission (623 nm red light and 465 nm blue light) were fabricated using the as-prepared dual-emitting core–shell CDs/CaAlSiN3:Eu2+-silica powder, and the electrical characteristics of these LED devices were evaluated. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that these LED devices could be used for plant growth lighting in plant factories. The LEDs prepared in the present study for plant growth lighting have the advantage of being convenient, low-cost, non-toxic, and stable compared with traditional LED devices for plant growth lighting.

In this work, a GdMgAl 11 O19: Dy 3+ phosphor with dual functions of optical temperature sensing and white light illumination was synthesized using the high-temperature solid-state method. When excited by 348 nm UV light, the phosphor emits warm white light, and its luminescence behavior exhibits both overall thermal stability and local thermal sensitivity. By utilizing the reverse response characteristics of the luminescence intensity of two blue emission bands corresponding to Dy 3+ thermally coupled level transitions ( 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 15/2 , 452 nm; 4 I 15/2 → 6 H 15/2 , 476 nm) with temperature, its optical temperature sensing potential was explored using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method. Experimental results show that this phosphor can perform temperature detection over a wide range of 298-973 K, with a relative sensitivity of 0.746% K -1 at 298 K. Among all emission peaks, the 452 nm emission peak is a locally thermally sensitive peak, accounting for a very small proportion of the overall emission and having no decisive effect on the overall luminescence. The fluorescence intensities of the 476 nm blue, 570 nm yellow, and 663 nm red emissions, however, show consistent attenuation with increasing temperature. Even when the temperature rises to 423 K, the fluorescence intensity still retains 85% of its initial room temperature value, indicating excellent overall thermal stability. GdMgAl 11 O 19 : Dy 3+ phosphor integrates the dual functions of high-stability white LED and wide-range high-sensitivity optical temperature sensing. This study provides important reference for the application expansion of Dy 3+ -doped phosphors in LED devices and temperature detection systems, as well as for the development of multifunctional phosphors.
