A novel series of samarium-activated orange-red emitting CaY 2 Sb 2 (ZnO 4 ) 3 (CYSZO) phosphors has been successfully synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method. The phase purity, spectroscopy, and morphological properties of the phosphors have been extensively characterized. When excited at 407 nm, CYSZO:Sm 3+ samples exhibited a pronounced orange-red emission peak at 610 nm, this corresponding to the typical 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 7/2 both magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole transitions of Sm 3+ ions. The optimal doping concentration was established as 10 mol%. The quenching mechanism is attributed to the interaction of the nearest-neighbor ions. The prepared sample showed a remarkable internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 68.63 % and exceptional thermal stability at working temperature of the LEDs. As the Sm 3+ concentration increased, the decay time decreased correspondingly, ranging from 2.45 ms to 1.40 ms for concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 40 mol%. The phosphor materials exhibited high color purity, as evidenced by the Commission International de L'Éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates. The synthesized white light-emitting diode (w-LED) exhibited an impressive color rendering index (CRI) of 96 and a desirable correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5674 K. Furthermore, the CYSZO:10 mol%Sm 3+ @oleic acid phosphor-stained latent fingerprint (LFP) images show excellent visualization capabilities on various surfaces with high contrast and long-term stability. These results highlight the potential of CYSZO:Sm 3+ phosphors to serve as a promising orange-red material for w-LED applications and LFP detection.

The encapsulation of phosphor particles into a silica glass (PiSG) matrix leads to the formation of an efficient and chemically durable spectral converter, which is a promising candidate for the fabrication of stable and high-power phosphor-converted white light-emitting-diodes (pc-wLEDs). Here, high-throughput fabrication of transparent PiSG spectral converters based on Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ , Mg 2 Al 4 Si 5 O 18 :Eu 2+ , and Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Cr 3+ is demonstrated via injection molding followed by pressureless sintering. The as-fabricated PiSG exhibits broadband emission covering the visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectral regions (i.e., 500–900 nm) with a high-luminescence efficiency (> 85%) and high-chemical and thermal stabilities, retaining more than 90% of its emission intensity at 200 °C. Consequently, high-power pc-vis-NIR-LEDs (10 W) are manufactured using the injection molded PiSG spectral converters, which showed excellent luminescence performance (i.e., luminous efficiency (LE) = 115 Im W −1 , correlated-color-temperature (CCT) = 4531 K, and color-rendering-index (R a ) = 90.1 at 50 mA and input power of 0.45 W). This work enables the fabrication of stable and high-power broadband LEDs with a low cost and outstanding optical properties, making the as-fabricated pc-vis-NIR-LEDs based on PiSG spectral-converter a favorable device for lighting and bioimaging applications.

Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging (SPRi) is a powerful label-free technique for high-throughput biochemical analysis. Wavelength modulation is particularly suitable for SPRi due to its wide dynamic range and robustness to fabrication tolerances. However, conventional systems relying on tunable filters (e.g., AOTF, LCTF) suffer from high cost, complexity, and limited temporal resolution. To overcome these drawbacks, we developed a rapid wavelength-modulation SPRi system using a multi-LED source and an adaptive second-order fitting (ASF) algorithm. The system covers the 730–805 nm spectrum with five LEDs. The ASF algorithm first performs a coarse full-spectrum scan to locate the resonance wavelength, then dynamically selects an optimal three-LED subset for fast second-order fitting, enabling accurate reconstruction of resonance wavelength without mechanical scanning. This approach significantly reduces cost and complexity while achieving a scanning cycle of 105 ms, RI resolution of 5.54 × 10−6RIU, dynamic range of 0.0241 RIU, and excellent multi-channel consistency. The system has been successfully applied to monitor multi-channel antibody–antigen interactions in real time. Furthermore, it was used to detect cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) in synovial fluid, where an elevated concentration in an osteoarthritis sample versus a control aligned with its role as a cartilage catabolism marker. This work validates a practical and reliable platform for early diagnosis of osteoarthritis.

Highly efficient green/yellowish-orange phosphors with low thermal quenching behavior are urgently required to improve the luminescence efficiency, color stability, and color rendering of phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs). Herein, a novel green Cs 2 BaP 2 O 7 :0.01Eu 2+ phosphor with high luminescence efficiency (82.7%) and thermal quenching behavior (92.5% at 423 K) is reported. Besides, a further luminescence improvement in the quantum yield (98.9%) and thermal quenching resistance (120% at 448 K) is successfully achieved in green/yellowish-orange color-tunable Cs 2 MP 2 O 7 :0.01Eu 2+ (M = Ba, Sr, and Ca) phosphors. Surprisingly, these green/yellowish-orange Cs 2 MP 2 O 7 :0.01Eu 2+ (M = Ba, Sr, and Ca) phosphors even have a prior advantage over the commercial green β-SiAlON:Eu 2+ and yellow YAG:Ce 3+ phosphors. The corresponding spectral adjustment and thermal stability mechanisms are revealed, related to the optimization of local lattice symmetry. The prototype w-LEDs exhibit warm white light with CIE color coordinate at (0.337, 0.322). The color rendering index, corrected color temperature, and luminescence efficiency can reach 92.6, 4044 K, and 152.56 lm W −1 , respectively. In general, the as-reported green/yellowish-orange Eu 2+ -doped pyrophosphate phosphors are promising candidates in the future high-quality w-LEDs applications. The proposal of local lattice symmetry modulation can provide a new approach to exploit novel phosphors with excellent thermal quenching resistance.

Single-phase white phosphors are highly desirable for achieving stable white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). In this work, a series of Ce3+-, Tb3+-, and Sm3+-doped as well as codoped Ca3LuAl3B4O15 (CLAB) phosphors were successfully synthesized, and white light was achieved by tuning relative doping concentrations. The phase structure, morphology, and optical properties were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Energy transfer from the parity-allowed Ce3+ ions to the parity-forbidden Tb3+ and Sm3+ ions was confirmed through spectral analysis and comparison. Under 342 nm excitation, the optimized CLAB:1%Ce3+,2.5%Sm3+,10%Tb3+ phosphor exhibits warm-white-light emission originating from three activators. In addition, the phosphor retains 71% and 42% of its initial emission intensity at 450 and 600 K, respectively, demonstrating the good thermal stability of the phosphor. By combining the optimized CLAB:1%Ce3+,2.5%Sm3+,10%Tb3+ phosphor with a commercial 340 nm ultraviolet (UV) chip, a warm w-LED was fabricated, exhibiting CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.3631, 0.3625), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4419 K, and a color rendering index (CRI) of 93. This study offers a newly designed single-phase white phosphor for high-quality warm w-LEDs.

The development of pure-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) still lags behind that of green and red-emitting PeLEDs. Mixed halide (Br/Cl) perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) are commonly employed for blue emission but suffer from halide vacancies and ion migration. Here, we present a passivation strategy using the multifunctional fluorinated phosphonic acid molecule (1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodec-1-yl)phosphonic acid (HFPA), which possesses active functional groups that improve the stability and electroluminescence performance of CsPb(Br/Cl) 3 NCs. The HFPA molecule is shown to interact with uncoordinated Pb 2+ on the PeNC surface through the phosphonate groups, concurrently establishing hydrogen bonds with adjacent halide ions. Moreover, the presence of fluorine atoms promotes ionic bond formation with the halide octahedra, thereby stabilizing the octahedral structure. The fabricated PeNC-LEDs exhibited a spectrally stable pure-blue emission peak at 467 nm, achieving a significantly improved external quantum efficiency (14.8%, 9-fold higher), maximum luminance (1052 cd·m -2 , 10-fold higher), and half-life (342 s, 13-fold higher) compared to the device fabricated with unmodified CsPb(Br/Cl) 3 NCs. Furthermore, the effective passivation of surface vacancies and stabilization of halogen ions by the HFPA molecules successfully suppressed ion migration in the PeNC-LEDs, thereby significantly enhancing the stability of the device.

The infinite potential of lanthanide in optoelectronic research has triggered the search for ideal host materials. Herein, based on the excellent lanthanide compatibility of double perovskite La2MgTiO6, light-responsive multifunctional phosphors with four modes were successfully constructed (Modes I–IV: Tm–Yb; Er–Yb; Ho–Yb; Er/Tm–Yb). After systematically exploring the internal mechanism of high-purity and brightness upconversion (UC) photoluminescence behind the four modes, intense green, blue and near-white lighting-emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated. Besides, aiming at the different emission energy levels of the monitored bands, the temperature-sensing performance of Modes I–IV was strictly evaluated utilizing thermally coupled or non-thermally-coupled luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) techniques. All the modes demonstrate excellent temperature measurement potential, stability and repeatability. Especially in Mode IV, a novel self-calibrating partition thermometer with dual-emitting centers originating from Er/Tm was designed successfully, which can provide specific LIR for three regions of low temperature, medium temperature and high temperature, and finally achieve high relative sensitivity over an ultra-wide temperature range. The results testify that the as-synthesized multifunctional phosphors break through the limitation of lanthanide doping types in a single material, which can realize the diversification of application functions and launch a new chapter for the design of advanced multifunctional materials.

Narrow-bandwidth emissive carbon dots (NBE-CDs) can be well applied in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) owing to their excellent properties such as high color purity, high sensitivity, and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Currently, most NBE-CDs achieve high PLQY fluorescence emission in solution, whereas NBE-CDs are susceptible to aggregation-caused quenching in solid state, which leads to a sharp decrease or even disappearance of fluorescence intensity. To achieve narrow-bandwidth solid-state emissive of CDs, in this work, a solution of narrow-bandwidth emissive orange CDs (O-CDs) with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 49 nm and an absolute PLQY of 83.45 % are synthesized through one-step hydrothermal method by using citric acid as carbon source and rhodamine 6G with inherent narrow FWHM as surface modifier. Subsequently, the O-CDs are dispersed in a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix to form O-CDs/PVP fluorescent films, which retains a narrow FWHM of 49 nm and exhibits a PLQY of 59.4 %, thereby enabling solid-state emission. Combining experimental and theoretical simulations, it is found that the solvent environment plays a critical role in determining the FWHM of O-CDs. Specifically, the FWHM gradually decreases as the proton donating capacity gradually weakens and the degree of dispersion deepens. Finally, high-color-purity photoluminescent LEDs with an FWHM of 49 nm are fabricated by combining the O-CDs/PVP fluorescent films with blue LEDs chips. This work provides both theoretical and experimental foundations for the controllable synthesis of efficient narrow-bandwidth solid-state emissive CDs.

It is of great significance for white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs) to explore new, efficient and stable inorganic phosphors excited by wideband near-ultraviolet (n-UV) light. A new type of efficient emission-tunable Ce3+/Mn2+ doped Ca2YHf2Al3O12 (CYHAO) garnet phosphor which can be excited by n-UV light is studied in this work. Due to the effective energy transfer (ET) from Ce3+ to Mn2+ in CYHAO, CYHAO:0.09Ce3+,xMn2+ phosphors have a wide excitation band in the 370–470 nm region with a peak at 410 nm. Under excitation at 410 nm, all the samples show tunable color emission and match with the near UV chip. Through the decay time, it is determined that the energy transfer efficiency is as high as 88.83%. The calculated activation energy is about 0.217 eV, indicating the relatively good thermal stability. The cathodoluminescence (CL) properties show that the phosphor has a high saturation current and saturation voltage. A single component white LED is fabricated by using the CYHAO:0.09Ce3+,0.3Mn2+ phosphor and a 400 nm n-UV chip. It is worth noting that the detailed study of the energy transfer mechanism, thermal quenching mechanism and CL mechanism has reference value for the development of new co-doped phosphors.

Inorganic phosphors with tunable broadband emission hold significant applications in solid-state lighting. Herein, a series of novel Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ (abbreviated as SYGO: Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ ) phosphors with tunable optical properties were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction process. The photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum of Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ ranges from 200 to 400 nm with two peaks at 280 and 331 nm, matching well with the n-UV chip based white light-emitting diodes (WLED). Under ultraviolet light excitation, a single Bi 3+ -doped Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 phosphor exhibited five distinct luminescence peaks at 410, 510, 560, 605, and 700 nm at 10 K, which are attributed to the 3 P 1 → 1 S 0 transition emissions of Bi 3+ ions occupying the four Sr sites and one Y site within the Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 host lattice . The optical tuning of the Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ phosphor is achieved by designing the Bi 3+ →Eu 3+ energy transfer and changing the excitation wavelength based on the selected site occupation. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates and emission color of the Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ phosphors were successfully tuned from blue via white to red. The energy transfer efficiency from Bi 3+ to Eu 3+ can reach as high as 89.54 %, and this energy transfer process is predominantly governed by the dipole-quadrupole interaction. In addition, the white LED device prepared by combination of SYGO: 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.03Eu 3+ phosphors with 365 nm chip has high color rendering index (CRI) of 85.5 and low correlated color temperature of 3537 K. As the driving current increases, the white light emitting diodes (WLED) device demonstrates good color stability. Based on these findings, the synthesized SYGO: Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ phosphors can serve as color-tunable and single-phase white phosphors with potential applications in UV-excited white LEDs.

Cr3+-Activated broadband near-infrared (NIR) luminescence materials are attracting much attention as next-generation smart NIR light sources that are widely used in night vision, bioimaging, medical treatment, and many other fields. Herein, a series of Na3GaxAl1−xF6:Cr3+ NIR phosphors with broadband emission and tunable luminescence properties were designed and prepared. The luminescence intensity, peak position and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the materials can be controlled by adjusting the crystal field strength. Furthermore, Na3Ga0.75Al0.25F6:0.35Cr3+ exhibited high luminous efficiency and the emission intensity remained 81% at 423 K compared with the initial value at 298 K. The structural confinement and the electron–phonon coupling (EPC) effect may account for its good thermal stability. Finally, a pc-NIR-LED device with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 6.53% at 350 mA was fabricated by combining the as-prepared NIR phosphor and a blue InGaN chip, and its applications in night vision and medical fields were further investigated. This work will promote the development of NIR phosphors with tunable luminescence properties.

Indoor plant cultivation has been receiving increased attention due to concerns about sustainable agricultural production. Phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) offer substantial promise as lighting solutions for regulating plant growth. However, the quest for high-performance phosphors with precise responsiveness to far-red phytochromes poses a challenge. Our study proposes a chemical substitution strategy to develop near-infrared (NIR) phosphors, YAl3–xGax(BO3)4:Cr3+. Benefiting from Ga3+ replacement of Al3+, a red shift in the NIR emission of YAl3–xGax(BO3)4:Cr3+ is realized to attain a good alignment with far-red phytochrome absorption centering at 730 nm. The optimized YAl2.5Ga0.5(BO3)4:Cr3+ exhibits a favorable quantum yield of 71.8% and robust thermal stability of 101.0%@423 K, owing to local structural distortion and thermal repopulation caused by Ga3+ incorporation. The fabricated pc-LED combined with the phosphor yields an NIR output power of 40.9 mW and a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 15.4% at 100 mA. Plant growth experiments demonstrate that under NIR illumination from the devices, the average lengths of pea roots and stems gain 127 and 225% promotion, respectively, further highlighting the potential of YAl2.5Ga0.5(BO3)4:Cr3+ phosphors for applications in plant cultivation.
