Effective adsorption of antimony(III) by MIL-101(Cr)-NH2: influencing-factor and characterization analyses and response surface optimization

Tian Tian,Yannan Jia,Jianguo Wu,Jinlong Zhao,Kai Xu,Zijie Wang,Zheng Wang

With the increasing threat antimony (Sb) pollution poses to the environment, its removal from water is becoming increasingly important. Accordingly, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are garnering increasing research attention owing to their excellent performance as adsorbents. Here, the MOF MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 was prepared directly by solvothermal synthesis. Sb(III) adsorption using MIL- 101(Cr)-NH 2 was evaluated systematically at varying adsorbent dosages and pHs. And the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were explored by altering the contact time, initial Sb(III) concentration, and temperature, respectively. The results revealed that Sb(III) was adsorbed onto MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 very quickly, even at low antimony concentrations. The maximum Sb(III) adsorption capacity of MIL-101-NH 2 is 83.61 mg g -1 . In the presence of coexisting ion (NO 3 - ), the amount of Sb(III) adsorbed was slightly increased, which may be due to the formation of an inner-sphere complex. The Box–Behnken method was used to design and optimize a response surface with reference to three main influencing factors, that is, dosage, pH, and temperature, so as to obtain a multivariate quadratic model of adsorption behavior and identify the optimal adsorption conditions. Finally, a preliminary economic analysis of the synthetic material was carried out.

pH-responsive nano-controlled-release agents loaded with thiabendazole in MIL-101(Fe): preparation, characterization, and smart release behavior

Liu Sinan,Wang Li,Lü Fulin,Yang Shuzhen

Fusarium graminearum is a pathogenic fungus responsible for significant plant diseases. To combat infections caused by this pathogen, we designed a pH-responsive nano-pesticide thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe). Through systematic optimization of the loading parameters, the optimal preparation conditions were determined as follows: the thiabendazole solution concentration was 3 mg/mL, the amount of carrier used was 0.0400 g, and the loading time was 6 h. Structural characterization revealed that MIL-101(Fe) possesses a uniform octahedral structure with a smooth surface. Thiabendazole was successfully loaded into its pores without damaging the crystal structure of MIL-101(Fe). Regarding release behavior, thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) exhibited significant pH-responsive characteristics. After 238 h, the cumulative release rate of thiabendazole reached 74.08% at pH = 5.0, while the cumulative release rates at pH = 7.0 and 9.0 were 62.17% and 57.22%, respectively. The release kinetics study showed that the release process of thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) followed a first-order model. Furthermore, Ritger-Peppas model fitting suggested that the release mechanism is consistent with Fickian diffusion across pH = 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0. The prepared thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) displayed antibacterial activity comparable to that of conventional SC Thi and exhibited no adverse effects on wheat seed germination or seedling growth. This study provides new ideas and methods for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly nano-pesticides.

WS2 enhances the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle in MIL-101(Fe) to promote the activation of peroxymonosulfate for phenol degradation

Huiying Lei,Xuechang Ren,Ning Fu,Gongrong Chen,Yajun Wei,Zhongshan Li,Hongjin Chen,Zerui Lu

To address the low Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling efficiency of Fe-based catalysts during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, this study successfully constructed a MIL-101(Fe)/WS 2 composite catalytic material. The results show that the MW 1:1 composite exhibits excellent performance toward PMS activation. By leveraging the cooperative effect of dual-metal cycling between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and W 4+ /W 6+ , as well as unsaturated sulfur vacancies, it achieves 97% phenol degradation within 60 min, with a reaction constant of 0.1038 min −1 , which is approximately 110 times that of single MIL-101(Fe) and WS 2 . The effects of key operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH value and coexisting anions on phenol degradation efficiency were systematically evaluated. Through in-depth radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy analysis, it was clearly identified that sulfate radical ( SO 4 ∙ − SO4∙− ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the main active oxide species driving the degradation reaction. Furthermore, this study further elucidated the degradation means of phenol, proclaimed the reaction mechanisation, and evaluated the ecological toxicity of phenol and its intermediate products using the ECOSAR model. This work provides new insights for constructing efficient iron-based catalysts to activate PMS and promoting its application in the control of refractory organic pollutants.

Fabrication of MIL-101(Fe)/MWCNTs-COOH hybrid material for ultra-sensitive electrochemical monitoring of ciprofloxacin in actual matrices

Nanke Ma,Huiling Peng,Anqi Wei,Yuan Jin,Guangli Li

The extensive use of ciprofloxacin (CIP) has raised growing concerns regarding environmental pollution, food safety, and public health, thereby driving an urgent demand for rapid, sensitive and cost-effective detection methods. Herein, an electrochemical sensing platform is constructed by integrating MIL-101(Fe) with MWCNTs-COOH, which synergistically couples the effective analyte preconcentration and catalytic Fe–O active sites of MIL-101(Fe) with the exceptional conductivity and large surface area of MWCNTs-COOH. Notably, the reversible Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox cycle in MIL-101(Fe) facilitates rapid electron shuttling, further amplifying the electrochemical signal toward CIP oxidation. This dual-functional interface enables simultaneous preconcentration and signal amplification, yielding a broad linear response spanning 0.05–15 μM, accompanied by a high sensitivity of 5.6492 μA·μM −1 , as well as an ultralow LOD of 0.006 μM. Additionally, this sensor also demonstrates outstanding selectivity, good repeatability, excellent reproducibility, and durable stability, retaining approximately 96.1% of its initial current signal after 21 days of storage. Furthermore, to rigorously validate practical feasibility, acceptable recoveries between 92.9% and 105.3% were measured in honey, tap water, and CIP eye drops, demonstrating its versatility across food, environmental, and pharmaceutical matrices. Overall, this work establishes a design blueprint for high-performance electrochemical sensors based on MIL-series MOF/carbon composites, opening new avenues for rapid, on-site antibiotic monitoring to ensure food safety, environmental protection, and pharmaceutical quality control.

Construction of ternary BiOBr/NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/g-C3N4 nanocomposite as an efficient photocatalyst for degradation of tetracycline

Zhao Xu,Guo Hongyan,Zhang Nannan,Yue Zhi,Gu Xungang

A novel dual Z-scheme BiOBr/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 (BNG) heterojunction was constructed via a simple two-step solvothermal process. NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) nanoparticles and BiOBr microspheres were uniformly deposited on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 . The prepared BNG exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance for tetracycline (TC) degradation compared to single catalyst. The optimized BNG-19 composite (with 19% NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 ) achieved 92.38% degradation of TC within 75 min under visible light, which was 2.47, 1.78, and 1.84 times higher than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 , NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe), and BiOBr, respectively. Moreover, the composite exhibited excellent stability with 82.4% removal efficiency after five cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the synergistic dual Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which was directly evidenced by in-situ irradiated XPS showing opposite directional shifts of Bi 4f (positive) and Fe 2p/N 1s (negative). This unique charge transfer pathway effectively promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers, with •OH and •O 2 ⁻ identified as the dominant reactive species. This work provides a new strategy for constructing g-C 3 N 4 -based dual Z-scheme heterostructures with direct mechanistic evidence for efficient environmental remediation.

Ag nanoparticles in the cages of MIL-101(Cr) as an efficient and stable photocatalyst for nitrogen reduction reaction

Xu Zhang,Xiaoman Li,Senda Su,Mengyao Tan,Guodong Liu,Yingying Wang,Min Luo

The active sites of the catalyst and the charge transfer during the reaction are crucial for the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (PNRR). Here, ultrafine Ag Nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as the active sites and the electron transporters are successfully fixed in the cavities of the metal–organic frame MIL-101(Cr) by the “double solvent-photoreduction” method. The hydrophilic cages of MIL-101(Cr) could restrict and disperse the growth of Ag NPs, and the windows of the cages prevent them from being detached from the MOF carriers. The Schottky junction between Ag NPs and the MIL-101(Cr) leads to ligand–metal charge transfer (LMCT), while the localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) possessed by Ag NPs themselves generates hot electrons. Thus, N2 was converted to NH3 by the synergistic effect of the two mechanisms, which was 12 times higher than that of pure MIL-101(Cr) and reached 138.81 μmol g−1 h−1. Furthermore, the mechanism of nitrogen fixation and the reason for the stabilization of this catalyst were investigated, and the results were verified by density functional theory calculations.

Construction of a novel Z-scheme V2O5/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) composite photocatalyst with enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Cong Huang,Jun Wang,Mengjun Li,Xiaofang Lei,Qiang Wu

The construction of Z-scheme systems is a valid strategy to effectively enhance photocatalytic property in the field of photocatalysis . In the present work, a novel Z-scheme V 2 O 5 /NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared via a simple one-pot solvothermal method for the first time. The phase structure, morphology and optical property of the as-prepared V 2 O 5 /NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) composite were carried out by a series of characterizations. The photocatalytic property of V 2 O 5 /NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst was investigated by photodegrading tetracycline (TC) under ultraviolet–visible light irradiation. The systematic studies indicate that the obtained V 2 O 5 /NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst possesses superior photocatalytic performance toward TC removal. Furthermore, a Z-scheme photocatalytic degradation mechanism for TC over V 2 O 5 /NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) composites was proposed. The results show that Z-scheme V 2 O 5 /NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst has potential application in the treatment of TC wastewater. This research will broaden the studies of NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)-based Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Adsorption of organic compounds from aqueous solution by pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde grafted MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 metal-organic frameworks

Malcom Frimpong Dapaah,Baojian Liu,Liang Cheng

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of particular interest in the adsorption of organic pollutants . This study investigated the adsorption of aniline (ANI), furfural (FUR), and bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution using MIL-101(Cr)-X (X = –H, –NO 2 , –NH 2 and, –N-2-pyc), MIL-100(Cr, Fe), HKUST-1, and ZIF-8. For the first time, an imino-functionalized MOF was used to adsorb organic compounds in water. MOFs were characterized by XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption, SEM , TEM, elemental analysis, and FTIR. MIL-101-N-2-pyc demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity of 460.8, 126.5, and 100.7 mg/g towards 500 mg/L BPA, ANI, and FUR respectively. The adsorption isotherms better suited the Langmuir model than the Freundlich model. Importantly, 98% of BPA (100 mg/L) was removed and the kinetic data correlated well with the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 > 0.998). Binary adsorption of FUR and acetic acid (AA) were determined for industrial relevance. MIL-101-N-2-pyc outperformed commercial activated carbon and the other MIL-101s with an impressive co-adsorption of 66.1 mg/g FUR and 62.5 mg/g AA. Overall, the adsorption mechanism was due to hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, and electrostatic attraction. Moreover, MIL-101-N-2-pyc exhibited remarkable structural stability and less than 0.01 wt% Cr leached into water. The adsorbent regeneration was improved after 4 cycles in methanol.

Acceleration of Persulfate Activation by MIL-101(Fe) with Vacuum Thermal Activation: Effect of FeII/FeIII Mixed-Valence Center

Jieyang Yang,Zequan Zeng,Zhanggen Huang,Yan Cui

In this work, the activation effect of vacuum thermal treatment on MIL-101(Fe) (MIL: Materials of Institute Lavoisier) was investigated for the first time. It demonstrated that vacuum thermal activation could accelerate the activation of persulfate (PS) by MIL-101(Fe), and the enhancement of the catalytic capacity of MIL-101(Fe) was mainly attributed to the change in the FeII/FeIII mixed-valence center. The results of the SEM and XRD showed that vacuum thermal activation had a negligible effect on the crystal structure and particle morphology of MIL-101(Fe). Meanwhile, the higher temperature of vacuum thermal activation caused a higher relative content ratio of FeII/FeIII. A widely used azo dye, X-3B, was chosen as the probe molecule to investigate the catalytic performance of all samples. The results showed that the activated samples could remove X-3B more effectively, and the sample activated at 150 °C without regeneration could effectively activate PS to remove X-3B for at least 5 runs and approximately 900 min. This work highlights the often-overlooked activation effect of vacuum thermal treatment and provides a simple way to improve the catalytic capacity and reusability of MIL-101(Fe) which is beneficial for the application of MIL-101(Fe)/PS systems in azo dye wastewater treatment. Keywords:vacuum thermal activation;MIL-101(Fe);persulfate;azo dye

Metal-Organic Frameworks of MIL-100(Fe, Cr) and MIL-101(Cr) for Aromatic Amines Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions

Mao-Long Chen,Shu-Yang Zhou,Zhou Xu,Li Ding,Yun-Hui Cheng

MIL-100(Fe, Cr) and MIL-101(Cr) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied to the adsorptions of five aromatic amines from aqueous solutions. These three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and surface area analysis. The adsorption mechanism of three MOFs and the effects of the structures of MOFs on the adsorption of aromatic amines were discussed. The results show that the cavity system and suitable hydrogen bond acceptor were important factors for the adsorption for five aromatic amines of aniline, 1-naphthalamine, o-toluidine, 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and 2-nitroaniline: (a) the saturated adsorption capacity of aniline, 1-naphthylamine and o-toluidine on MIL-100(Fe) were 52.0, 53.4 and 49.6 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction and cavity system diffusion. (b) The adsorption capacity of 2-nitroaniline and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene on MIL-101(Cr) were 54.3 and 25.0 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the more suitable pore size of MIL-101(Cr) than that of MIL-100(Fe, Cr). The MOFs of MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Cr) can be potential materials for removing aromatic amines from aqueous solutions.Keywords:metal-organic framework;adsorption;aromatic amines;aniline;1-naphthalamine;o-toluidine;2-amino-4-nitrotoluene;2-nitroaniline

Dual positive charging sites for MIL-101 enhanced adsorption of toluene under high humidity conditions: Experimental and theoretical studies

Xinqi Luan,Syed Jalil Shah,Xin Yu,Ruimeng Wang,Jingyu Bao,Liming Liu,Jiguang Deng,Zhongxing Zhao,Zhenxia Zhao

Highly efficient capture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under humid conditions is a significant yet formidable task for metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Based on the material simulation technique, we proposed implanting a significantly positive-density ligand (DABA) to modify MIL-101 and constructing dual positive-charging centers to improve MIL-101 competitive adsorption of benzene VOCs over H 2 O vapors both thermodynamically and kinetically. The introduction of DABA containing two –NH 2 groups with electrostatically positive charges into MIL-101 resulted in the formation of an open tetrahedral cage with a dual positive charging center. This facilitated strong N-H…π interactions with toluene molecules, leading them to accumulate firmly in MOF pores, and thus dramatically enhanced its adsorption capacity from 17 to 31 toluene molecules per unit cell compared to pristine MIL-101. Moreover, the open tetrahedral cage in D-MIL-101 preferentially captured toluene and occupied the strongest adsorption sites first, thus effectively preventing H 2 O entry into MOF pores to contact with hydrophilic metal sites. This realized high water resistance and toluene adsorption uptake under high humidity conditions. Results showed that D-MIL-101 had a high specific surface area of 2558 m 2 /g and a new microporous structure of 9.5 Å size. It presented higher toluene uptake of 4.69 mmol/g at lower vapor pressure of P / P 0  = 0.013 and 298 K temperature, as well as 3.3 folds higher working capacity of toluene compared to pristine MIL-101 under 80 % RH. This study presents a novel approach for constructing hydrophobic MOFs using new positive charging ligands and delves deeper into the competitive adsorption of VOCs/H 2 O in MOF composites for large-scale applications.

Construction of NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Bi2MoO6 S‐scheme heterojunction for efficient and selective photocatalytic CO2 conversion to CO

Huifang Feng,Yitong Sun,Qiaozhen Xu,Hong Liu

Developing efficient photocatalyst to promote the conversion of CO 2 into value-added chemicals remains challenging. Here, novel NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Bi 2 MoO 6 S-scheme heterojunctions were fabricated via a solvothermal method, in which Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) nanoparticles uniformly growing on the NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) (NM101) octahedrons with intimate contact interface. The resultant heterojunctions revealed significantly enhanced activity for CO 2 photoreduction. The optimal performance was achieved when the content of BMO was 10 wt%, and the formation rate of CO reached 67.0 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light illumination (with apparent quantum efficiency of 0.09 % at 450 nm), which was 3.2-fold of individual NM101. The boosting activity benefited from the formation of S-scheme heterojunction at the NM101 @BMO interfaces, which facilitated the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs with strong redox ability at the interface. This S-scheme charge transfer mechanism was further validated by the in-situ XPS and fluorescence probe molecular experiment. Besides, the intermediates and preliminary mechanism of photoreaction were unraveled based on in-situ DRIFTS analysis. This work provides some novel insights for designing efficient S-scheme photocatalysts for CO 2 photoreduction.
