Rational design and controlled synthesis of MOF-on-MOF heterostructures: Overcoming lattice mismatch

Mei Dong,Huiliang Zhou,Qiguang Cao,Song Li

The construction of well-defined MOF-on-MOF heterostructures is significantly challenged by lattice mismatch between dissimilar frameworks. Here, we report a precisely controlled core–shell MIL-101(Fe)@CoZn-ZIF composite with a uniform “one-to-one” encapsulation structure, overcoming the intrinsic incompatibility between octahedral MIL-101(Fe) cores and tetrahedral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF) shells. This achievement is realized through two synergistic strategies: nucleation kinetics modulation and surfactant-mediated interfacial engineering. Systematic optimization of key parameters, including the Co 2+ Zn 2+ to Fe 3+ molar ratio (120:1), precursor concentration (150 mM), and ligand to metal ratio, enabled dimensional matching and uniform coating. Moreover, surfactants (Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and Polyvinylpyrrolidone) effectively reduced the heterogeneous nucleation barrier, promoting oriented ZIF deposition onto MIL-101(Fe). Comprehensive characterization (SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, XPS and BET) confirms the well-defined hybrid architecture. When the PVP-mediated composite material was applied in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes for degrading methylene blue and p-nitrophenol, it demonstrated enhanced performance and stability compared to the pristine CoZn-ZIF. This work establishes a generalizable approach for integrating topologically mismatched MOFs, advancing the design of multifunctional materials for catalysis and related fields.

Efficient conversion of 5-HMF to FDCA over MOF-on-MOF derived catalyst

Rui Zhang,Shimin Li,Jiale Chen,Jiantao Li,Jian Xiong,Zhihao Yu,Xuebin Lu

A template-assisted approach was employed to synthesize a MOF-on-MOF derived catalyst for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Characterization revealed that the catalyst forms a cobalt–manganese metal oxide composite phase with a hierarchical porous structure and uniformly distributed Co/Mn active sites. The oxygen vacancies work together with the Lewis acid sites to gradually oxidize the hydroxyl and aldehyde groups in 5-HMF. In the context of reaction conditions that have been identified as optimal (140 °C, 6 h, 50 mg catalyst, 5.88 mol L−1 H2O2), the yield of FDCA was 87.55%, accompanied by 5-HMF conversion rate of 98.66%. The catalyst exhibited exceptional cycling stability, sustaining an FDCA yield exceeding 75% across five cycles. Mechanism studies indicate that the Co–Mn bimetallic synergistic effect optimizes the reaction pathway through electron transfer and oxygen species activation, while the microporous structure prolongs the residence time of intermediates through confinement effect, promoting multi-step oxidation. Compared with the single-metal MOFs derived catalysts, this catalyst has significantly improved adsorption performance and oxidation efficiency, providing an efficient solution for the green synthesis of the bio-based polyester monomer FDCA.

Efficient removal of Congo red using adsorbents prepared via MOF-on-MOF strategy

Najmeh Zare,Tao Wu,Dongxing Zhang,Nianbing Zhong,Li Fu,Tejraj M. Aminabhavi,Hassan Karimi-Maleh

Congo Red (CR) is a toxic compound posing serious health issues and to the aquatic ecosystem. To solve the problems of low efficiency of single MOF adsorbents and to improve adsorption capacity of this class of adsorbents, in this research a new strategy is adopted to prepare ZIF-67@Cu-MOF composite with a core-shell structure employing in situ growth strategy with carboxyl linkage wherein Co 2+ ions were anchored onto Cu-MOF surface to efficiently remove the Congo Red, a pollutant from wastewater sources via adsorption. Influence of solution pH, contact duration, initial concentration, temperature, and the presence of coexisting ions on adsorption performance of CR was investigated to remove the dye up to 98.9 % in 5 min. The Langmuir isotherm model suggested the maximum adsorption capacity of 3494.06 mg/g at 25 °C. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic (ΔG ranging from −35.35 to −43.55 kJ/mol, ΔH = 85.82 kJ/mol). The CR removal efficiency remained at 94.8 % after 5 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles confirmed that ZIF-67@Cu-MOF composite had the potential ability to remove CR molecules from wastewater sources.

Construction of Z-Scheme MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures for Mitochondria-Targeted Sonodynamic Therapy

Yilin Yang,Zhihua Wang,Ning Wang,Fei Yan,Zhan Shi,Shouhua Feng

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based nano-sonosensitizers are promising for antitumor sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Under ultrasound (US) irradiation, MOF-based sonosensitizers can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby exerting cytotoxic effects on tumor cells. However, their low electron–hole (e - /h + ) separation efficiency and limited tumor-targeting capability hinder the therapeutic efficacy of SDT. In this study, these challenges were addressed by developing a MOF-on-MOF Z-scheme heterojunction GaMOF/TiMOF (GM/TM) to enable mitochondria-targeted SDT. Research on gallium (Ga)-based materials in the field of antitumor treatment is continuously advancing, particularly in targeted therapy and combination therapy. The GM/TM heterojunction was constructed by epitaxially growing GaMOF on the surface of NH 2 -MIL-125 (TiMOF), forming a structure that effectively enhances charge transfer and prevents rapid e - /h + recombination, significantly enhancing ROS generation and apoptosis under US irradiation. Additionally, the presence of surface Ga 3+ enables efficient mitochondrial targeting in tumor cells, leading to altered membrane permeability, mitochondrial iron overload, and the initiation of ferroptosis via lipid peroxidation. These synergistic effects collectively result in potent antitumor efficacy. This study conceptually introduces the MOF-on-MOF heterojunction as a multifunctional sonosensitizer for mitochondria-targeted tumor therapy, offering a reference for the development of SDT and providing insights into the bioavailability and potential applications of gallium-based materials in antitumor treatment. Statement of significance In this study, we developed a MOF-on-MOF composite ultrasound-sensitive platform targeting mitochondria to improve the efficacy of SDT in complex tumor lesions. It integrated apoptosis and ferroptosis to enhance anti-tumor SDT via ultrasound. The Z-scheme heterostructure sonosensitizer GaMOF/TiMOF significantly enhanced ROS generation under ultrasound and accumulated in mitochondria, making them the primary target for SDT. Moreover, the damage to mitochondrial function caused by GaMOF/TiMOF led to an imbalance of endogenous iron and oxidative stress, inducing mitochondrial-associated ferroptosis. This, in turn, triggered lipid peroxidation in conjunction with high levels of ROS generated by ultrasound, significantly enhancing the anti-tumor effects of SDT. This work provided a new strategy for efficient and safe sonosensitizer modification and proposed an innovative mitochondrial-targeted therapeutic approach.

Design of novel lubricating structured MOF-on-MOF heterostructure towards the tribological application

Huawen Zhu,Zhilin Cheng

The merits of the elastic stiffness and flexible structure of 0D metal organic frameworks (0D MOFs) and the super-lubrication structure of 2D MOFs were conductive to improve the tribological performance of oil. In present paper, the spherical structure ZIF-7 nanoparticles and flake-like 2D Ni-BDC nanosheets were incorporated into the “ball-on-plate” heterostructure by in-situ synthesis route. The composition and structure of ZIF-7/2D Ni-BDC heterostructure were determined by a series of characterization technologies, which proved the spherical structure ZIF-7 nanoparticles grown on the surface of 2D Ni-BDC nanosheets. The ZIF-7/2D Ni-BDC heterostructure as additive in oil exhibited the better dispersibility and stability. The tribological experiments demonstrated that the ZIF-7/2D Ni-BDC heterostructure added into liquid paraffin effectively reduced by 39.7% in the friction coefficient and 18.03% in wear scar diameter at 0.08 wt% addition relative to pure liquid paraffin. The worn surface and debris characterizations confirmed that the “ball-on-plate” heterostructure could yield the synergistic effect of “rolling” and “interlayered sliding” in the friction process, thus significantly improving the lubrication performance of liquid paraffin.

Amino-functionalized MOF-on-MOF architectural nanocomplexes composed for radioactive-iodine efficient adsorption

Linshuai Liu,Lifeng Chen,Kunyapat Thummavichai,Zhenxiong Ye,Youbin Wang,Toyohisa Fujita,Xinpeng Wang

The effective capture of radioactive iodine vapor is crucial for radiation safety during spent fuel reprocessing. However, current materials used for iodine vapor capture have limitations such as low adsorption efficiency and poor stability, which hinder the effectiveness. To address this issue, an efficient, stable, recoverable and heterogeneous MOF-on-MOF [NH 2 -MIL-101-on-NH 2 -UiO-66] adsorbent was prepared using the epitaxial growth strategy. The adsorbent was extensively characterized with various technologies including FT-IR, XPS and XRD, and batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance in iodine gas adsorption. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of NH 2 -MIL-101-on-NH 2 -UiO-66 reached 1930 mg/g at 80 °C and ambient pressure, outperforming the parent MOFs, with a 20–33% higher adsorption rate and a 1.52–2.74 times higher adsorption capacity. Notably, the adsorbent exhibited superior performance compared to commercial silver-exchanged zeolite and other MOFs adsorbents. The excellent adsorption performance of this adsorbent can be attributed to its abundant adsorption sites and well-defined pore structure. Additionally, the adsorbent displayed good thermal stability, withstanding temperatures up to 360℃. Overall, this study provides a highly effective material for iodine vapor adsorption and contributes to the understanding of novel MOF-on-MOF architectures and the applications.

Muxin Lu,Yajuan Deng,Yuanchang Li,Tianbao Li,Juan Xu,Shu-Wei Chen,Jinyi Wang

The detection of blood glucose level receives much attention, because diabetes has become one of the significant threats to human health worldwide. In this paper, we described a novel core-shell MOF@MOF composite-based electrochemical sensor for nonenzymatic glucose sensing in alkaline media. The core-shell UiO-67@Ni-MOF composites were synthesized by internal extended growth of shell Ni-MOF on the core UiO-67 under polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) regulation. In the sensor system, UiO-67 with large specific surface area and good conductivity was used to accelerate the rate of electron transfer of UiO-67@Ni-MOF. Ni-MOF served as an electrocatalytic material due to excellent electrochemical activity toward glucose oxidation . The morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of UiO-67@Ni-MOF composites were characterized. To demonstrate the detection performance of the UiO-67@Ni-MOF composite-based sensor, it was successfully used for nonenzymatic glucose sensing. The results indicated that UiO-67@Ni-MOF composites exhibited high electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation compared with individual UiO-67 and Ni-MOF. Moreover, the sensor possessed high sensitivity and selectivity for real-time amperometric detection of glucose. It performed glucose level detection in human serum samples with acceptable reliability and accuracy. The present work suggested that the as-fabricated sensor is promising for nonenzymatic glucose sensing in real samples and holds great potential as an alternative tool for the rapid diagnosis of diabetes and for monitoring blood glucose levels daily.

Yiming Wang,Hong Li,Ze-nan Hu,Xin Chen,Zejun Sun,Yongjian Ai,Wenjuan Xu,Wenhui Zhang,Kelong Ding,Chengrui Li,Tong Jiang,Shuya Zhao,Haipeng Wang,Gang Zhang,Hong-bin Sun

Designing and developing efficient synergistic catalytic systems has always been an exciting topic. In this work, a sandwich-type nanocomposite , UiO-66-NH 2 @Pt@PCN-222, was utilized as a synergistic catalytic system for the selective reduction of nitrobenzaldehydes to nitrobenzyl alcohols. Benefiting from the synergy of PCN-222 and Pt NPs, the catalyst can efficiently promote the formation of 10 nitrobenzyl alcohols under mild conditions within as short as 30 min. Moreover, the PCN-222 provides not only active sites but also protection for metal nanoparticles , so the catalyst remained intact activity in cycles. This work has reference significance for the construction of synergistic catalytic systems.

MOF-on-MOF-derived GC/Co@CNTs with multiscale heterostructures for enhanced microwave absorption

Haiyang Peng,Ying Zhang,Tao Ma,Yixing Huang,Xiao Kang,Ying Li

A 2D/1D/0D carbon-magnetic heterostructure was constructed after pyrolysis. • GC/Co@CNTs-800 delivered an EAB of 6.04 GHz at 2.00 mm. • Multiscale heterointerfaces enhanced electromagnetic attenuation. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived electromagnetic wave absorbing materials have attracted considerable interest because of their tunable composition, rich porosity, and structural versatility. However, conventional single-MOF-derived materials often have limited metallic components and structures with a single dimensionality, which hinder the simultaneous optimization of electromagnetic wave absorption performance. In this work, a ZIF-L@ZIF-67 precursor with a MOF-on-MOF architecture was designed. Through high-temperature pyrolysis, it was converted into graphitized carbon/Co nanoparticles@carbon nanotubes (GC/Co@CNTs) composites composed of two-dimensional graphitized carbon, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, and zero-dimensional Co nanoparticles. By tuning the pyrolysis temperature, the magnetodielectric response response of the materials was effectively regulated. The optimized GC/Co@CNTs-800 exhibited a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −69.4 dB at 1.85 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.04 GHz at 2.00 mm. During pyrolysis, the in-situ formation of a conductive carbon network, magnetic Co nanoparticles, and abundant heterogeneous interfaces synergistically promoted conduction loss, magnetic loss, and interfacial polarization. As a result, the electromagnetic attenuation capability of the composites was significantly improved. This study highlights the considerable promise of MOF-on-MOF-derived architectures for electromagnetic wave absorption and offers a viable structural engineering strategy for the development of next-generation microwave absorbers. MOF-on-MOF-derived FeCo@NC OER&ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries

Qianqiao Wang,Lan Wang,Shuya Zhang,Zhuo Chen,Wenchao Peng,Yang Li,Xiaobin Fan

Zinc-air batteries, as one of the emerging areas of interest in the quest for sustainable energy solutions, are hampered by the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and still suffer from the issues of low energy density. Herein, we report a MOF-on-MOF-derived electrocatalyst, FeCo@NC-II, designed to efficiently catalyze both ORR ( E half  = 0.907 V) and OER ( E j=10  = 1.551 V) within alkaline environments, surpassing esteemed noble metal benchmarks (Pt/C and RuO 2 ). Systematically characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of iron and cobalt bimetallic and the optimized distribution of nitrogen configuration improved the charge distribution of the catalysts, which in turn optimized the adsorption / desorption of oxygenated intermediates accelerating the reaction kinetics. While the unique leaf-like core–shell morphology and excellent pore structure of the FeCo@NC-II catalyst caused the improvement of mass transfer efficiency, electrical conductivity and stability. The core and shell of the precursor constructed through the MOF-on-MOF strategy achieved the effect of 1 + 1 > 2 in mutual cooperation. Further application to zinc-air batteries (ZABs) yielded remarkable power density (212.4 mW/cm 2 ), long cycle (more than 150 h) stability and superior energy density (∼1060 Wh/kg Zn). This work provides a methodology and an idea for the design, synthesis and optimization of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Multi-stepwise charge transfer via MOF@MOF/TiO2 dual-heterojunction photocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution

Yao Chen,Dong Yang,Xin Xin,Zhongshan Yang,Yuchen Gao,Yonghui Shi,Zhanfeng Zhao,Ke An,Wenjing Wang,Jiangdan Tan,Zhongyi Jiang

Rational manipulation of the photogenerated charge transfer inside the photocatalyst is key to enhancing the photocatalytic performance. Herein, inspired by the charge transport chain in natural photosynthesis, a novel multi-stepwise charge transfer strategy is proposed for the ingenious design of photocatalysts. To confirm the effectiveness of this strategy, a kind of MOF@MOF/TiO2 dual-heterojunction was constructed by depositing TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of core–shell MOF@MOF hetero-frameworks. The energy band potentials of the three moieties in MOF@MOF/TiO2 exhibit a multi-stepwise characteristic, wherein the slight gradient difference of energy bands helps in deconcentrating the charge in multiple energy bands and affords a smaller interface resistance, thus rendering a high charge transfer efficiency. Accordingly, compared with the single-heterojunction counterparts with one-step charge transfer including MOF@MOF and MOF/TiO2, the MOF@MOF/TiO2 dual-heterojunction achieves a much higher photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 7.108 mmol g−1 h−1 under full-spectrum irradiation. This study may offer a deep insight into the charge transfer behavior in the photocatalytic process, along with the rational design of high-performance photocatalysts for sustainable energy conversion applications.

Synthesis of Yolk/Shell heterostructures MOF@MOF as biomimetic sensing platform for catechol detection

Qiang Cao,Yushi Xiao,Na Liu,Rong Huang,Chen Ye,ChiHsien Huang,Huan Liu,Gang Han,Lidong Wu

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential as heterogeneous biomimetic catalysts due to their high surface area, tunable porosity, and diversity of metals and functional groups. However, the activity and substrate specificity of pure monomeric MOFs still must be improved. Here, a size-selective MOF coating on the external surface of a biomimetic MOF is used to overcome these limitations of pure monomeric MOFs. The synthesis process of the biomimetic material involved first the coating of porous coordination network (PCN-222) cores with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a structure-directing agent and then the modification of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8). The yolk/shell PCN-222@ZIF-8-based sensor showed high selectivity for catechol but not for dopamine or L-DOPA. The PCN-222@ZIF-8 hybrid material-based sensor displayed 10 times more sensitivity than the PCN-222-based sensor, with low limit of detection (LOD) at 33 nmol L −1 . Thus, ZIF-8 is a shell which allows the diffusion of specific substrate to the active sites of the PCN-222 and enriches the substrate. Furthermore, the PCN-222@ZIF-8 exhibits solvent adaptability, which overcomes the drawback of the natural HRP enzyme. This work opens a new avenue for construction of MOF@MOF biomimetic sensors and other applications.
