Addressing global energy and freshwater scarcity requires sustainable, integrated technologies. Inspired by sunflower's water transport mechanisms, we developed a hydrophilic composite aerogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS), and waterborne polyurethane (WPU). Incorporating carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) yielded the BMPCW aerogel, a bifunctional system for simultaneous solar desalination and hydrovoltaic power generation. This design synergizes the aerogel's interfacial evaporation properties with c-MWCNTs' conductivity and photothermal conversion, significantly enhancing water/ion transport and energy conversion efficiency. Under 1 kW m −2 simulated sunlight, the system achieved a high freshwater evaporation rate of 3.41 kg m −2 h −1 and generated an open-circuit voltage of 125.2 mV in 3.5 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The BMPCW aerogel exhibits excellent chemical stability, renewability, and maintains robust performance over multiple cycles. Aerogel array devices successfully demonstrated applicability in seawater desalination and powering small electronics. This work highlights the aerogel's potential for distributed energy, smart agriculture, and offshore applications, offering a novel biomaterial strategy and feasible pathway for sustainable clean water and green energy co-production.

Due to the limitation of the intrinsic dielectric constant, the energy storage density of PVDF polymers cannot meet the needs of electronic materials. In this regard, this work focuses toward enhancing the dielectric and energy storage performance of PVDF by preparing PVDF nanocomposites impregnated with sepiolite modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB@Sep) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (C-MWCNTs). The results show that CTAB@Sep nanofibers can serve as efficient nucleation agents for γ-PVDF crystals. Furthermore, Sep nanofibers modified with CTAB can significantly promote the dispersion of C-MWCNTs through the electrostatic adsorption effect and then block the conductive path, therefore improving the dielectric and energy storage properties of PVDF-based composites. The dielectric constant of PVDF/CTAB@Sep/C-MWCNTs composites increases by 8 times compared with that of pure PVDF at 1 kHz, while the loss remains at only 0.08. Under an electric field of 110 kV·mm–1, the discharge energy density is 4.03 J·cm–3, and the energy storage efficiency reaches 81.85%. Therefore, this work provides an alternative strategy for preparing high-performance polymer-based energy storage materials under low field strength.

The low interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites limit their applications in harsh environments. Synergetic improvement of the interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of CF/EP is a challenging research job. In this paper, the surface of CF/EP prepregs was coated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and PEEK, and then the modified CF/EP laminates were prepared by compression molding process. The effects of MWCNTs and PEEK on the mechanical properties and thermal properties of CF/EP laminates were investigated. The results showed that the type II interlaminar fracture toughness, impact strength, and thermal conductivity of the CF/EP laminates synergistically modified by 0.5 wt% MWCNTs, and 2 wt% PEEK reached 1404 J/m 2 , 277 J/m 2 , 0.89 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 100°C, which were 81%, 42% and 82% higher than that of unmodified CF/EP laminate, respectively. And thermal stability of CF/EP laminate was improved. The addition of MWCNTs and PEEK reduces the loss factor of CF/EP laminates. This work is of great significance to realize the integration of structure and function of composite materials in the high-performance applications.

Antistatic nylon-6 (PA6) composites have attracted considerable attention due to their tailored properties for electronics, textiles, and automotive applications. In this paper, the antistatic PA6 composites comprising with polypropylene (PP), aminated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-NH 2 ) and aminated carbon black (CB–NH 2 ) were prepared by melt blending and compression molding. In the composite system, PP was used as the co-matrix to assist the phase separation of PA6. MWCNTs-NH 2 and CB-NH 2 were introduced as conductive fillers. All composites showed good thermal stability with the T 5 % higher than 376 °C and the composites containing fillers showed higher residues after thermal degradation due to the good thermal stability of MWCNTs-NH 2 and CB-NH 2 . The DSC and XRD results indicated that the crystallization properties of the composite materials were determined by PA6 and PP rather the conductive fillers. In general, the introduction of conductive fillers decreased the mechanical properties but effectively improved the conductivity of the composites and then the antistatic properties. Besides, the antistatic analysis and mechanical test denoted that MWCNTs-NH 2 and CB-NH 2 showed synergistic effect on improving the antistatic and mechanical properties of the composites, which was more evident at high MWCNTs-NH 2 quantity. The micromorphologies obtained by SEM first confirmed the ductile fracture of these composites, and then disclosed a two-phase structure of PA6 and PP polymer matrix, where the conductive fillers were found in the PA6 phase. Considering both mechanical and antistatic properties, the composite (PCNB-3) containing both 3 phr MWCNTs-NH 2 and CB-NH 2 was proposed for the antistatic PA6 composite.

Heavy metal contamination, especially Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ , poses severe risks to food safety and human health, creating an urgent need for rapid and sensitive detection methods. Herein, a novel tin-based electrochemical sensor with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was developed for the simultaneous detection of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in vegetables. The SnO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 @MWCNTs/GCE was systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The synergistic effect of the g-C 3 N 4 @MWCNTs composite and the SnO 2 film effectively facilitated electron transfer and accelerated the response, enhancing sensing performance. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the sensor for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ was 10–400 μg·L −1 . The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.40 μg·L −1 and 0.61 μg·L −1 for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ , respectively. In vegetable samples, the recoveries of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in spinach, lettuce, and cabbage were all within the range of 95–105 %. This study provides a new method to quickly, sensitively, and simultaneously detect Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in vegetables. These findings expand the application of environmentally friendly tin-based electrochemical sensors for actual sample detection.

In this study, Ni/MWCNTs/CuO/Fe 2 O 3 composite nanomaterials were synthesised by a simple hydrothermal method, using Fe 2 O 3 as a substrate material and taking advantage of the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes, which possess a large surface area, and the catalytic ability of Ni. These nanocomposites are easy to synthesise and cost-effective. Compared to CuO/Fe 2 O 3 and MWCNTs/CuO/Fe 2 O 3 , Ni/MWCNTs/CuO/Fe 2 O 3 exhibits higher sensitivity and response values for H 2 S at room temperature. In particular, the best performance was achieved when the content of Ni/MWCNTs was 5 wt%. The sensing material, featuring a short response/recovery time (4 s/10 s), a low lower limit of detection (10 ppb), a high response value (100 ppm, 125), and high selectivity, is an excellent detection material for H 2 S. The enhanced performance of the composites can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the formation of multiple heterojunctions and Schottky barriers facilitates electron transfer. Secondly, the interconnection of the conductive backbones of the MWCNTs increases the area of mutual contact, thereby providing more active sites for the reaction. Lastly, the highly efficient electrocatalysis of Ni reduces the activation energy of the reaction, accelerating the reaction kinetics, which in turn improves the gas-sensitive performance of the sensing materials for H 2 S.

In this work, the photothermal effect of aminomodified MWCNTs/TiO 2 /SiO 2 /PDMS nanocomposites was utilized as a photothermal substrate to replace the metal heating block of traditional qPCR combining of the advantages of high photothermal effect of composite materials and low sample volume of static microfluidic PCR. Meanwhile, Multiple PCR rapid thermal cycles under 808 nm laser irradiation was accomplished through a non-contact energy conversion method and the use of chamber-immobilized PCR chips as specific reaction vessels. Notably, the chip chamber architecture requires merely about 8 μL of reagents compared to traditional PCR tubes. While reducing the amount of PCR reagents used, the higher specific surface area results in a larger contact surface (SSA) between the heat source and the solution. Thereafter, the CCD image sensor is then used as a fluorescence detector to monitor the amplification of the target DNA during the PCR reaction, thus enabling simultaneous fluorescence detection. In addition, the threshold cycle (Ct) value of qPCR and standard PCR curves for SARS-CoV-2 virus have been analysed in depth. Importantly, this study has important implications for the development of low-cost materials, miniaturized and portable Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) chips/systems.

The design of the material structure significantly influences microwave absorption properties. Enhancing electromagnetic performance requires the creation of diverse and heterogeneous interfaces to promote extensive wave reflections. This study developed 3D composites with point (NiFe-LDH), line (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, MWCNTs), and surface (reduced graphene oxide, RGO) architectures using ultrasonic stirring and a hydrothermal process, aiming to achieve improved electromagnetic properties. At a Ni:Fe ratio of 3:1, MWCNTs are interspersed within the layers of reduced RGO, forming a distinctive three-dimensional network structure. Additionally, on the MWCNTs/RGO composite's surface, NiFe-LDH flakes grow uniformly. The resulting composite exhibits an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.2 GHz and a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.93 dB at a thickness of 1.64 mm. Furthermore, a thickness of 1.70 mm achieves a maximum EAB of 6.88 GHz. These results demonstrate that the MWCNTs/RGO/NiFe-LDH composite provides a broad microwave absorption bandwidth and high absorption efficiency, making it a promising candidate for developing advanced materials for microwave absorption applications.

Effectively transferring the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at the microscopic scale to one-dimensional macroscopic materials has always been a cross-scale assembly challenge that researchers urgently need to address. In this paper, we present a synergistic dual-polymer-assisted acid spinning and viscoelastic interfacial densification technique, successfully assembling commercially available large-diameter, short-length, low aspect ratio, but easily mass-produced and cost-effective multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into macroscopic functional fibers with continuous stacking structures, substantial mechanical strength, and good electrical conductivity. These “low-quality” MWCNTs, when processed into fibers using conventional nanomaterial assembly techniques, typically produce samples that are fragile and prone to breakage, with mechanical properties even failing to meet the minimum strength requirements for careful manual collection. We achieved breakthroughs through the following multiple synergistic actions: (1) utilizing the acid-soluble aromatic polyamide polymer Kevlar to assist in the uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in concentrated sulfuric acid (CSA); (2) using Kevlar as a “welding agent” to enhance the MWCNT stacking structure; (3) introducing the water-soluble polymer poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to slow down the CSA-water exchange rate and reduce fiber surface disturbances; (4) inhibiting the gelation/solidification rate to extend the assembly and orientation time of MWCNTs; and (5) filling the pores left after the removal of CSA and water. Ultimately, we successfully prepared dual-polymer-doped CNT fibers (DP-CNTFs) with continuous mechanical collection strength for subsequent densification treatment. Taking advantage of the thermoplastic properties of PVA, we employed polytetrafluoroethylene as a viscoelastic interfacial layer to perform hot-press densification and defect repair on DP-CNTF, further enhancing its mechanical strength by 147.80% and electrical conductivity by over 770%. This technique not only overcomes the practical application bottleneck of continuously assembling and post-treating low-quality MWCNTs but also demonstrates its superiority in large-scale production and performance enhancement, providing a novel pathway for the industrialization of MWCNTs and their fibers.

1-Aminopyrene, as a transformation product of the priority pollutant 1-nitropyrene, has raised increasing concerns due to its carcinogenic, mutagenic, and bioaccumulative properties in marine environments. A rapid and sensitive method for trace 1-aminopyrene detection in seawater is essential for marine environmental monitoring and public health protection. In this paper, a novel electrochemical immunosensor was fabricated based on an NH2-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes-chitosan (NH2-MWCNTs/CS) nanocomposite film loaded with anti-1-aminopyrene antibody on a glassy carbon electrode. The NH2-MWCNTs/CS composite served as a conductive and biocompatible matrix that facilitated interfacial electron transfer and provided a suitable surface for adsorption-based antibody immobilization. Potassium ferricyanide was employed as an electrochemical probe to generate voltammetric signals, and the immune response was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry. Under optimized experimental conditions, the peak current change was inversely proportional to the 1-aminopyrene concentration in the range of 0.5 ng·mL−1to 110 ng·mL−1, with a detection limit of 0.36 ng·mL−1. The immunosensor demonstrated good selectivity, stability, and anti-interference capability in complex sample matrices. It was successfully applied to the determination of 1-aminopyrene in real seawater samples, with recovery rates ranging from 97.53% to 99.30% and relative standard deviations below 0.92%. The results indicate that the proposed immunosensor offers a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional chromatographic methods, and holds great potential for on-site monitoring of trace PAH metabolites in marine environments.

Amphiphilic copolymers and functionalized nanoparticles have been severally used to modify polymeric membranes to enhance their antifouling properties. However, their synergistic effects on the membrane microstructure and performance have been rarely reported. Herein, sodium styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMANa) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes with carboxyl groups (MWCNT-COOH), amino groups (MWCNT-NH) and hydroxyl groups (MWCNT-OH) were utilized to blend with poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to fabricate the composite membrane by phase inversion. The hydrogen bonding between functional groups and SMANa, and the nucleation of MWCNTs were systematically investigated during the membrane formation. The hydrogen bonding strength followed the tendency of MWCNT-COOH > MWCNT-NH > MWCNT-OH. For MWCNT-NH, weak hydrogen bonding resulted in its aggregation in the dope solution and some large pores on the membrane surface. The α-nucleation of MWCNT-OH mainly dominated the membrane microstructure instead of hydrogen bonding, leading to a dense surface skin layer. In contrast, uniform and suitable pore structures were constructed on the MWCNT-COOH modified membrane thanks to the strong hydrogen bonding. Correspondingly, the resultant membrane simultaneously exhibited a better permeate flux (1266.50 L/m 2 ·h·bar) and rejections to BSA (98.60%), Congo red (62.85%) and methyl blue (29.19%), and the highest flux recovery ratio (88.5%), indicating excellent antifouling properties.
