Positively-charged PEI/TMC nanofiltration membrane prepared by adding a diamino-silane coupling agent for Li+/Mg2+ separation

Huanhuan Wu,Haoyue Zhao,Yakai Lin,Xin Liu,Lin Wang,Hong Yao,Yuanhui Tang,Lixin Yu,Haihui Wang,Xiaolin Wang

Positively charged nanofiltration membrane has gained significant interest in magnesium and lithium separation due to its separation mechanism, especially in salt lake-based lithium industry. To obtain a high-density positive charged surface and high Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity, a novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration (NF) membrane for recovery of Li + from Mg/Li mixtures with Mg 2+ /Li + ratios of 20 was successfully prepared by using polymeric amine polyethyleneimine (PEI) and monomeric amine silane coupling agent (3-diamino-methyl-cyclohexyl triethoxysilane, DTES). Then the effect of DTES on the surface properties and performance of the prepared DTES/PEI/TMC TFN membranes were investigated. Chemical composition analysis revealed that DTES not only hydrolyzed to Si–OH and then self-polymerized to Si–O–Si, but also reacted with the self-carrying acyl chloride of 1,3,5-benzene trichloromethane (TMC). Moreover, SiO 2 nanoparticles were in-situ generated from DTES inside the PA layer with high compatibility. Due to the compatible properties with the positively charged PEI polymer, the reacted DTES was distributed uniformly in the formed TFN selective layer with no noticeable aggregation. The doping of SiO 2 into the polyamide network gave rise to the enlargement of the membrane pore size, enhanced the surface hydrophilicity, and reinforced the surface positive charges. The water flux of the DTES/PEI/TMC membrane improved from 36.9 L m −2  h −1 to 49.58 L m −2  h −1 compared to the PEI/TMC membrane. Additionally, the Mg 2+ and Li  +  rejection of the optimized membranes was 91.46% and −10.5%, respectively, with permeability and selectivity (S Li, Mg  = 12.95) superior to that of the commercial NF membranes. Considering the commercial availability of DTES, this study not only offers a high-performance nanofiltration membrane for recovering lithium from brines but also provides a feasible strategy for industrial separation of other monovalent and divalent ions.

Supported ionic liquid membrane contactor with crown ether functionalized polyimide membrane for high-efficient Li+/Mg2+ selective separation

Junyuan Hua,Jintao He,Hongchang Pei,Xiaohua Ma,S. Ranil Wickramasinghe,Jianxin Li

Worldwide demand for lithium is increasing rapidly. Implementing an efficient extraction for lithium from salt-lake brines with low concentration and high Mg/Li (m/m) ratio remains challenging. A supported ionic liquid membrane (PI@14C4-SILM) contactor was developed in this work using a crown ether functionalized polyimide membrane material (Poly(DAB14C4-6FDA)) as the support and tributyl phosphate (TBP) and (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis-trifluoromethylsulfonimide salt) ([C 4 mim][NTf 2 ]) mixture as the liquid phase for high-efficiency Li recovery. The results show that when the feed phase Mg/Li ratio is 35 and the stripping phase is 0.5 mol/L HCl , the Li + penetration rate, initial flux and Li/Mg selectivity of PI@14C4-SILM contactor are 0.354 μm/s, 0.128 mol/m 2 ·h and 19.1, respectively. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results show that Poly(DAB14C4-6FDA) and TBP have greater interaction with Li + than other ions (Na, Mg, K). Meanwhile, the binding energies of Poly(DAB14C4-6FDA)-Li-NTf 2 and TBP-Li-NTf 2 were calculated by density functional theory (DFT), which were −163.26 and −182.1 kcal/mol, respectively. The higher binding energies of the complexes indicated that their structures were more stable. The mechanism of the PI@14C4-SILM contactor's excellent Li + mass transfer performance may be the formation of a fast Li + transfer channel between the solid phase containing the crown ether structure and the liquid mobile phase in the pore structure . Besides, the TBP·Li·NTf 2 and TBP·H·NTf 2 structures in the liquid membrane phase effectively maintained the cyclic operation of the SILM system. This study provides an effective solution for selective separation of Mg/Li and utilization of Li resources in salt lake water.

Unlocking Mg2+ storage in imine-functionalized CNTs@COF hybrids: role of in situ coatings in enhancing magnesium battery performance

Xiangming Wang,Yang Zhao,Han Qin,Feng Yan,Tao An,Weimin Liu,Yu Su,Xianbo Yu

Magnesium batteries exhibit promising prospects owing to their high theoretical volumetric capacity, abundant natural reserves, and superior safety. However, their practical applications are hindered by the sluggish diffusion kinetics of Mg2+ in conventional cathode materials. This study innovatively proposes a strategy for the epitaxial growth of imine-linked covalent organic frameworks on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs@COF), thereby effectively balancing electrode conductivity and the density of active sites through precise control of the COF layer thickness. This composite material not only facilitates the efficient diffusion of Mg2+ via axially aligned COF channels and continuous charge transport networks but also enhances electrical conductivity through the incorporation of CNTs, significantly improving the energy storage performance, cycling stability, and utilization efficiency of active sites in magnesium batteries. Furthermore, the Mg2+ storage mechanism in CNTs@COF is hypothesized to involve the storage of six electrons per CN bond within each COF unit. As a result, CNTs@COF exhibits superior discharge capacity, rate capabilities, and cycling performance (e.g., 191.7 mAh g−1 at 20 mA g−1 after 200 cycles and 107.6 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1 after 3000 cycles). The synthetic approach paves the way for constructing high-performance multivalent battery systems, bridging the gap from molecular design to macroscopic electrochemical performance.

Ultra-thin double Janus nanofiltration membrane for separation of Li+ and Mg2+: “Drag” effect from carboxyl-containing negative interlayer

Changsheng Guo,Nan Li,Xiaoming Qian,Jie Shi,Miaolei Jing,Kunyue Teng,Zhiwei Xu

To explore nanofiltration (NF) membrane with high permeability and good separation for Li + from salt-lake, a triple-layered ultra-thin double Janus NF membrane was prepared with polyethersulfone (PES) substrate membrane, a carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal (CNC-COOH) interlayer and an ultra-thin polyamide (PA) layer via interfacial polymerization of polyethylenimine and trimesoyl chloride. The interlayer contain a large number of carboxyl groups, which could improve not only the negative potential of interlayer, but also the positive potential of the PA layer because of the increase of unreacted NH 2 . In addition, the hydrophilic of interlayer was stronger than the PA layer. Therefore, the interlayer and the ultra-thin PA layer could construct a double Janus NF membrane with hydrophobic/hydrophilic, positive/negative charge. It was found that the content of carboxyl groups and unreacted amino groups on the surface of Janus PES/CNC-COOH/PA NF membrane was increased obviously. The thickness of Janus NF membrane PA layer was 60.29 nm, 55.56% thinner than that in traditional PES/PA NF membrane and 25.89% thinner than that in weak Janus PES/cellulose nanocrystal/PA NF membrane. The Janus NF membrane had a minimum average surface roughness of 6.21 nm, an effective pore diameter of 1.38 nm, and exhibited a positive surface charge with a highly hydrophilic nature. Under the Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 30 and 60, the Janus NF membrane exhibited the rejection difference between Mg 2+ and Li + reached to 74.35% and 83.96%, the water flux was 4.17 and 3.4 L/(m 2 ·h·bar), respectively, and the separation factor S Li,Mg was 12.15 and 5.84, respectively.

Engineered multifunctional nanocomposite hydrogel dressing to promote vascularization and anti-inflammation by sustained releasing of Mg2+ for diabetic wounds

Shuangli Zhu,Qiyuan Dai,Longtao Yao,Zetao Wang,Zhichao He,Maocai Li,Hao Wang,Qingtao Li,Huichang Gao,Xiaodong Cao

Diabetic ulcers are common and severe chronic wound. For the treatment of diabetic ulcers, due to the existence of sinus and fistula in the wound sites, the prefabricated hydrogel could not cover the deep wounds well and result in further presence and proliferation of bacteria at the deep wound site, which increases the risk of secondary infection. In addition, most current hydrogel dressings do not rapidly repair wounds due to the lack of bioactivity . Therefore, it's essential to develop a bioactive hydrogel dressing with self-adaption to solve the above clinical problems. In this work, HQ hydrogel was fabricated by the self-crosslinking of hyaluronic acid modified with phenyl boronate acid (HA-PBA) by boronate ester dynamic bonds and electronic interaction between quaternized chitosan (QCS) and HA-PBA, which possessed good injectability , self-healing, adhesion and antibacterial properties . Especially, HQ hydrogel with good self-adaption can be shaped as needed and automatically adapt to the wounds with all kinds of shapes. In addition, Magnesium-containing bioactive glasses (BGs) with a uniform spherical morphology and amorphous structure were incorporated into HQ hydrogel to achieve nanocomposite hydrogel (HQB), which possessed good bioactivity and could slowly release magnesium to recruit cells, promote vascularization and anti-inflammation. More importantly, animal experiments showed that HQB hydrogel can strikingly accelerate wound healing of diabetic SD rats by improving granulation tissues formation, collagen deposition, the formation of blood vessels and decreasing inflammation in the wound sites, indicating a good clinical application prospect as wound dressing for diabetic wound healing.

Functionalized bio-spinning silk fiber scaffolds containing Mg2+with osteoimmunomodulatory and osteogenesis abilities for critical-sized bone defect regeneration

Xiang Xu,Yi Wang,Siyu Zhu,Rui Jia,Zulan Liu,Guotao Cheng,Dingpei Long,Lan Cheng,Fangyin Dai

Severe bone defects remain a significant clinical challenge, necessitating the development of advanced bone repair scaffolds with excellent biocompatibility, precise immune modulation, and robust support for vascularization and osteogenesis. Silk fibroin (SF), a polymer renowned for its outstanding biocompatibility, has been widely used in bone repair scaffold materials. However, its complex fabrication process limits its broader clinical application. In this study, flat silkworm cocoon (FSC), characterized by continuous silk fibers, a porous hierarchical structure, and superior mechanical properties, was utilized for the first time to fabricate bio-scaffolds (TH-PDA@Mg) designed for sustained magnesium ion release in bone repair applications. FSC scaffolds featuring surface pores and extracellular matrix-like structures were successfully prepared using hot-press and surface modification techniques. Magnesium ions were effectively assembled onto FSC scaffolds via polydopamine (PDA)-mediated adhesive interactions. The resulting TH-PDA@Mg scaffolds demonstrated enhanced osteogenic properties, exceptional mechanical strength, superior surface characteristics, and excellent biocompatibility. In vitro analyses revealed that these scaffolds supported cell adhesion, promoted stem cell proliferation, and facilitated osteogenic differentiation due to the synergistic effects of SF and magnesium ions. Furthermore, they exhibited immunomodulatory properties by promoting M2 macrophage polarization while suppressing M1 macrophage activity. In vivo studies using a rat model of critical-sized cranial bone defects showed that the TH-PDA@Mg scaffolds accelerated bone regeneration, enhanced angiogenesis, and mitigated inflammation. These findings highlight the remarkable osteogenic and immunomodulatory potential of functional bio-spinning silk fiber scaffolds, underscoring their promise as a therapeutic strategy for the clinical treatment of bone defects.

Integration of charge repulsion and size exclusion effects into the skin layer matrix for enhanced Mg2+/Li+ nanofiltration separation

Xin Mao,Nuanyuan Xu,Xinyu Shi,Hui Wen,Changkun Liu

Nanofiltration (NF) is commonly recognized as one of the effective technologies for the separation of magnesium (Mg 2+ ) and lithium (Li + ) from salt-lake brines. Charge repulsion and size exclusion effects often play an important role, whose functions primarily occur at the top surface and the matrix, respectively, of the skin layer. In this study, a novel nanofiltration (NF) membrane is prepared that integrates both size exclusion and charge repulsion effects into the matrix of the skin layer for enhanced Mg 2+ /Li + separation. With the surface-modified hydrophilic polyethylene (PE) membrane as the supporting layer, the prepared NF membrane successfully incorporated Fe 3+ ions into the matrix of the skin layer during the interfacial polymerization (IP). Fe 3+ ions which chelate with amine groups of PEI (aqueous-phase monomers during IP) ensure abundant positive charges within the matrix of the skin layer, providing good hydrophilicity and sustained electrostatic repulsive force against the transmembrane transport of Mg 2+ , and thus the enhanced rejection. Results exhibited a remarkable 92.6 % rejection rate for MgCl 2 and a higher water permeance of 22 LMH/bar, which is 1.57 times greater than that of the traditional PEI-TMC membranes. The nanofiltration process effectively reduced the Mg 2+ /Li + ratio from 50 in the feed to 5.4 in the permeate solution. It is also interesting to find that although the pore size of the skin layer (0.53 nm in radius) exceeds both the hydrated radii of Mg 2+ and Li + , the positive charges within the matrix of the skin layer still provide good selective separation performance, thus effectively breaking the trade-off of permeability and selectivity. This study offers a fresh perspective on the preparation of nanofiltration membranes by systematically exploring the potential of integration of charge repulsion and size exclusion effects into one location, i.e., the matrix of the skin layer for enhanced Mg 2+ /Li + separation performance.

Suppressing Mn3+-induced Jahn-teller distortion in LiMnxFe1-xPO4 via synergistic Mg2+ and Ti4+ dopant toward robust battery performance

Xuejie Zhang,Huijie Zhang,Yanyang Jia,Guihua Liu,Aijia Wei,Yongguang Zhang,Jingde Li

Innovatively proposed Mg 2+ & Ti 4+ co-doped to efficiently suppress Mn 3+ -induced Jahn-Teller distortion and stabilize LMFP's olivine framework. • In-situ characterizations combined with DFT calculations clarify the intrinsic mechanism of co-doped regulating LMFP's crystal/electronic structures. • Co-doped significantly boosts LMFP's electronic conductivity and capacitive contribution, realizing superior high-rate performance and structural reversibility. • Co-doped LMFP@C-MT reduces Mn dissolution by alleviating Jahn-Teller distortion, further enhancing the cathode's structural and electrochemical stability. LiMn x Fe 1-x PO 4 (LMFP) cathodes are considered promising candidates for next-generation lithium-ion (Li + ) batteries due to their high safety, low cost, environmental benignity, and relatively high energy density. However, they suffer from severe Jahn-Teller distortion and sluggish Li + kinetics, leading to poor structural stability and rate performance. Herein, a synergistic Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ co-doping strategy is proposed to concurrently regulate the crystal structure and electronic properties of LMFP. Structural and electrochemical analyses show that Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ effectively suppress Mn 3+ -induced Jahn-Teller distortion. This helps stabilize the olivine framework while causing a small shrinkage in the crystal lattice, thereby improving Li + diffusion capability. In situ XRD reveals that un-doped lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP@C) undergoes a distinct phase transition during the high-voltage plateau, as evidenced by peak splitting, whereas Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ co-doped lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP@C-MT) exhibits a continuous peak shift, indicative of a solid-solution reaction with improved structural reversibility. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that Mg 2+ lowers the Li + migration energy barrier, while Ti 4+ stabilizes the Mn electronic structure near the Fermi level. This synergistic effect suppresses Jahn-Teller distortion, thereby enhancing both structural stability and electrochemical kinetics. This enables the LMFP@C-MT cathode to deliver a high initial capacity of 158.35 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, along with outstanding cycling stability, retaining 91.39% capacity after 500 cycles at 1C. This work both presents an effective structural modification strategy and supplies theoretical guidance for the development of high-performance LMFP-based cathode materials. The LMFP@C-MT synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method suppresses the Jahn–Teller distortion induced by Mn 3+ and stabilizes the lattice. Combined with the ordered carbon coating, it enhances the charge transfer kinetics, thereby achieving excellent structural reversibility and electrochemical performance. Anti-reduction resistance mechanism and energy storage performance analysis for Mg2+ doped BaTiO3-based ceramics produced in reducing atmosphere

Dan Yang,Jiajin Lin,Xingzhong Liu,Hanxing Liu,Zhonghua Yao,Hua Hao

The development of base metal electrode multilayer ceramic capacitor (BME-MLCC) dielectric materials that combine high reduction resistance with superior energy storage performance is crucial to meet the demands of next-generation high-power electronic devices and power modules. In this study, a series of BaTiO 3 –MnO 2 –Yb 2 O 3 – x MgO (BMYT- x Mg, x  = 0–3) ceramics were successfully produced in a reducing atmosphere. The influence of Mg 2+ acceptor doping on the anti-reduction resistance mechanism and energy storage behavior was systematically investigated. The results indicate that Mg 2+ doping promotes the formation of [Mgʹʹ Ti-V•• O] defect dipoles, which effectively suppresses the generation and migration of charge carriers. This mechanism enables the BMYT-2Mg ceramic to maintain an insulation resistivity as high as 3.6 × 10 11  Ω m even after sintering in a reducing atmosphere. Additionally, Mg 2+ doping optimizes the phase structure, refines the grain size, increases the grain boundary density, and synergistically enhances the relaxor characteristics of the system. As a result, the BMYT-2Mg ceramic achieves a recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ) of 1.75 J/cm 3 and an energy storage efficiency ( η ) of 72.65% under an electric field of 270 kV/cm. It also demonstrates excellent energy storage stability and electrical reliability across a temperature range of 40–120 °C and over 10 5 charge–discharge cycles at 130 kV/cm. This work provides an effective design strategy for fabricating BaTiO 3 -based dielectric ceramics with both high reduction resistance and superior energy storage performance in a reducing atmosphere.

Reverse dual ionic liquid polymerization strategy to construct TA/IL sandwich composite nanofiltration membranes with enhanced Mg2+/Li+ separation

Xin Shi,Qiuyan Bi,Zizhen Peng,Zhicheng Wang,Xiaodan Zhang,Yakai Lin,Wenzhong Ma,Shiai Xu

Thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes generally face a challenging balance between permeability and selectivity when separating saline water with a high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio, and are also vulnerable to fouling and operational instability during prolonged operation. This study presents a dual ionic liquid (IL) mediated reverse interface polymerization (RIP) strategy. A hydrophilic polar intermediate layer is generated on the PES substrate via the co-deposition of tannic acid (TA) and [HEMIm][BF 4 ]. Subsequently, the organic phase containing TMC is first introduced on the surface of this intermediate layer, and then the PEI aqueous phase doped with hydrophobic IL ([C 6 mim] [Tf 2 N]) is introduced to trigger the RIP reaction. TIL-PIL membranes with rapid hydration behavior, a high positive surface charge (IEP pH = 9.5), excellent antifouling properties, and a uniform pore-size distribution were constructed for Mg 2+ /Li + separation. The separation factor (SF) of the membrane attained 88 at a feed Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio of 300, while maintaining a high salt water permeation flux of 13.58 LMH. Throughout the permeation process, the Mg 2+ /Li + ratio diminished from 300 in the feed to 1.2 during permeation. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated exceptional long-term stability throughout a continuous 100 h filtration experiment, with the Mg 2+ rejection rate consistently surpassing 98.5%. Compared with the RNFm membranes prepared on PES substrates without IL incorporation, the TIL-PIL membranes exhibit significantly improved antifouling performance.

In-situ grown polyaniline interlayer enables a high-pressure-tolerant nanofiltration membrane with enhanced flux for Mg2+/Li+ separation

Jiadi Liu,Zhiwei Zhao,Liyuan Chen,Chen Guannan,Boqian Zhao,Yuan Lulu,Zhenhua Jiang,Jinhui Pang

Nanofiltration (NF) shows great promise for recovering lithium (Li + ) from brine. Conventional strategies to improve the water flux of nanofiltration membrane usually destroy the stability of nanofiltration membrane. We developed a high-pressure-tolerant NF membrane by engineering an in-situ grown polyaniline (PANI) interlayer on a hydrolyzed poly (aryl ether ketone) (PEEK) substrate. This PANI interlayer, which exhibits excellent compatibility with PEEK, provides a robust platform for the subsequent formation of a polyamide (PA) selective layer via interfacial polymerization, thereby overcoming the inherent difficulty in functionalizing PEEK. The three-layer PEEK/PANI/PA structure ensures that the PANI interlayer protects the PA selective layer from direct interaction with the finger-like pores of the PEEK substrate, thereby preventing its structural collapse under high pressure. This unique configuration ensures structural integrity and enables high water flux. The optimal membrane obtained a high water flux of 118.97 L m −2  h −1 and a Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor of 15.8 at 30 bar. Long-term testing at 50 bar demonstrated stable operation for approximately 18 h, defining the performance limit of this membrane system. This work provides a solution for Mg 2+ /Li + separation nanofiltration membranes with improved water flux and high-pressure tolerance.

Enhanced flotation recovery of malachite via mechanical intensification in a high-Mg2+ system: Microstructural evolution and interfacial electrochemical behavior

Chenxu Wang,Wanting Yang,Yuchen Shi,Hongchang Liu,Hongfei Ba,Baojun Yang,Jun Wang

In high-Mg 2+ wastewater systems, the sulfidization flotation of malachite is severely inhibited. This study systematically investigated the effect of mechanical sulfidization on the flotation behavior of malachite in comparison with conventional stirring sulfidization. Pure mineral flotation tests showed that in a 100 mmol/L Mg 2+ solution, mechanical sulfidization achieved a maximum malachite recovery of 83.77%, significantly superior to stirring sulfidization. Actual ore flotation further confirmed that the copper recovery increased from 74.16% to 84.33% using mechanical sulfidization. Characterization results indicated that mechanical sulfidization effectively reduced magnesium ion adsorption on the malachite surface, promoted the rapid formation of Cu S hydrophobic species with a higher Cu(I) proportion, suppressed hydrophilic Cu–SO species, and generated a denser sulfidization layer. Electrochemical measurements revealed that mechanical sulfidization facilitated xanthate oxidation and constructed a stable hydrophobic barrier. DFT calculations further demonstrated that the mechanically sulfidized surface exhibited a higher Cu S bond population and a significantly lower activation energy barrier for xanthate oxidation than stirring sulfidization. In summary, mechanical sulfidization constructs a highly covalent Cu S network enriched with Cu(I) that lowers the kinetic barrier for xanthate oxidation, effectively alleviating the interference of high Mg 2+ ions. This study fills the gap in understanding the surface chemical states and electronic structure mechanisms underlying mechanical activation in malachite sulfidization flotation, providing a theoretical basis for high-Mg 2+ wastewater recycling in copper oxide ore flotation.
