The detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) markers in exhaled breath based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology is expected to become a non-invasive diagnosis method for lung cancer patients. However, the inherently low Raman scattering efficiency of trace VOCs in exhaled breath, coupled with the inadequate stability and uniformity of conventional Raman substrates, has hampered the practical application of SERS technologies for lung cancer biomarker detection. Additionally, the development of nanomaterials that simultaneously exhibit superior electromagnetic enhancement capabilities and efficient molecular enrichment functions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we have reported a size-effect-driven strategy for constructing Au nanocube (Au NC) @ zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) core-shell nanoparticles. Tunability of Au NC@ZIF-8 shell thickness from 3 nm to 40 nm was achieved through cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) concentration gradient control (0.5–2 mL) and ice bath kinetics control. This method requires no harsh conditions, featuring simple operation, mild reaction, and short synthesis time, successfully fabricating thin ZIF-8 shell layers with controllable structural properties. This unique architecture integrates the strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Au NCs with the porous adsorption capability of ZIF-8, realizing ultrasensitive detection of benzaldehyde (BA) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.5 ppb. As a straightforward approach for synthesizing homogeneous and controllable core-shell SERS-active nanoparticles, this method not only offers valuable insights for the preparation of analogous core-shell materials but also provides a robust material foundation and technical support for the non-invasive screening of lung cancer.

The sluggish kinetics and severe volume expansion are two major drawbacks that limiting the application of transition metal sulfides electrode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, we assembled Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets into thin-walled hollow spheres with PMMA spheres as sacrificial template, on which MOF-derived CoS 2 nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon were grown (MXene@CoS 2 /NC). The MXene@CoS 2 /NC exhibits state-of-the-art sodium ion storage properties, including a high reversible capacity of 620 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 , superior rate capability (394 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ), and excellent cycling stability (355 mAh g −1 after 5000 cycles). The corresponding electrochemical tests prove that the MXene@CoS 2 /NC has fast Na + ion diffusion and electron transfer compared with its counterpart without MXene interfaces. XPS and XANES characterizations disclose the introduced MXene and increased pyrrolic N can weaken the Co-S bonds of CoS 2 , which facilitates the conversion reaction between CoS 2 and Na 2 S, and thus improves the sodium storage kinetics. The DFT calculations also demonstrate the MXene can improve the conductivity of electrode materials by fast interfacial electron transfer. In addition, the MXene hollow spheres and MOF-derived NC provide host structures for CoS 2 , which can increase the contact between electrolyte and active materials, buffer the volume expansion of CoS 2 , and thus enhancing the electrochemical stability. This work provides a feasible strategy to construct anode materials for SIBs with improved sodium storage kinetics and cycling stability.

Transition-metal sulfides (TMS) are one of the most promising cathode catalysts for Li–O2 batteries (LOBs) owing to their excellent stabilities and inherent metallicity. In this work, a highly efficient mode has been used to synthesize Co@CNTs [pyrolysis products of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)]-derived CoS2(CoS)@NC. Benefiting from the special yolk–shell hierarchical porous morphology, the existence of Co–N bonds, and dual-function catalytic activity (ORR/OER) of the open metal sites contributed by MOFs, the CoS2@NC-400/AB electrode illustrated excellent charge–discharge cycling for up to nearly 100 times at a current density of 0.1 mA cm–2 under a limited capacity of 500 mA h g–1 (based on the total weight of CoS2@NC and AB) with a high discharge voltage plateau and a low charge cut-off voltage. Meanwhile, the average transferred electron number (n) is around 3.7 per O2 molecule for CoS2@NC-400, which is the chief approach for a four-electron pathway of the ORR under alkaline media. Therefore, we believe that the novel CoS2@NC-400/AB electrode could serve as an excellent catalyst in the LOBs.

Amaranth (AM) is a widely used synthetic azo food colorant that poses severe toxicological risks upon excessive consumption, creating an urgent need for its ultra-sensitive detection. We report a high-performance electrochemical sensor based on the electrostatic co-aggregation of V 2 O 3 @NC and NHCS for the high-fidelity quantification of AM. A unique “capture-and-catalysis” synergistic mechanism governs this composite interface. Specifically, the highly porous NHCS framework provides exceptional capacity to capture and pre-concentrate target molecules while acting as a highly conductive “electronic bridge.” Subsequently, the abundant mixed-valence (V 3+ /V 5+ ) sites of the V 2 O 3 @NC serve as a robust electrocatalytic engine to drive the catalysis, significantly amplifying the AM oxidation signal. Combining electrochemical kinetic analysis with DFT calculations (including HOMO and MEP), we reveal that this electrocatalytic evolution proceeds via a directional 1 H + /2e − transfer mechanism. Under optimal conditions, the V 2 O 3 @NC/NHCS sensor exhibits a broad linear range (0.01–12 µM) and an extremely low LOD of 0.80 nM. Practical analysis of commercial beverages yielded recoveries of 95.0%–104.3%, with results perfectly matching orthogonal UV-Vis cross-validation. This work provides a robust platform for azo dye screening and profound insights into the rational design of “capture-and-catalysis” composite interfaces. Graphical abstract

To address the issues of poor cycling stability and unrealized theoretical capacity of layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) as an anode material—caused by severe volume expansion during charge/discharge processes—we innovatively propose a "partial carbonization" modification strategy for ZIF-8 templates. This approach successfully constructs a ZnS/NC "dodecahedral nursery" rich in active sites. Benefiting from the abundant anchoring sites provided by this structure, MoS 2 can uniformly and firmly "take root" on the "nursery" via Mo–N bonds, ultimately forming a composite material (ZnS/NC@MoS 2 ) in which MoS 2 nanoflowers uniformly coat the dodecahedral framework. This composite effectively mitigates the volume expansion of MoS 2 and enhances overall structural stability. Moreover, the zinc retained by the partial carbonization strategy, after sulfidation, contributes additional capacity via conversion reactions, further enhancing the material's electrochemical performance. Specifically, when used as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), it maintains a specific capacity of 895.64 mAh g −1 after 1200 cycles at 2 A g −1 ; for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), its specific capacity increases from 348 mAh g −1 to 510 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 .

The rational design and synthesis of efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance and challenging for rechargeable zinc–air batteries. While much attention has been devoted to enhancing ORR performance in recent studies, the effectiveness of OER is equally crucial for charging performance of Zn–air batteries. In this work, NH2-MIL-101(Fe) is employed as a precursor to derive Fe-NC through a straightforward pyrolysis method. Subsequently, NiFe-LDH is synthesized on the surface of Fe-NC via a wet-chemical process to obtain Fe-NC@NiFe-LDH. Capitalizing on the synergistic interplay between Fe-NC, serving as the ORR active site, and NiFe-LDH, acting as the OER active site, Fe-NC@NiFe-LDH demonstrates remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic performance, boasting a positive half-wave potential of 0.83 V for ORR and a low potential of 1.68 V for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, alongside exceptional stability in alkaline environments. Furthermore, the Fe-NC@NiFe-LDH-based Zn–air battery exhibits outstanding discharge and charge performance, maintaining excellent cycling stability over 600 h (3600 cycles).

Janus membrane was integrated with oil separation and solar-driven desalination • Janus CuO@NC-PVDF hydrogel membrane achieved remarkable oil rejection • CuO@NC-PVDF layer demonstrated high surface temperature of ∼72 °C • Janus hydrogel membrane resulted in a high evaporation rate of 1.29 kg m -2 h -1 • Janus membrane can show remarkable long-term performance Solar-driven desalination has emerged as a promising strategy to address freshwater scarcity; however, its practical application is often hindered by severe performance deterioration under oily seawater conditions. To overcome the limitations of conventional interfacial evaporation systems, this study presents an asymmetric Janus hydrogel membrane based on copper oxide nanoparticles encapsulated within a nitrogen-doped carbon shell (CuO@NC), integrated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. The CuO@NC-PVDF Janus membrane features a hydrophilic–hydrophobic dual-layer architecture, enabling the functional decoupling of oil rejection and solar-driven evaporation. The hydrophobic layer effectively prevents oil penetration, while the hydrophilic photothermal layer facilitates efficient water evaporation. As a result, the membrane achieved outstanding oil rejection (>99.99%) across various oil-contaminated feed conditions. Under 1 sun irradiation, the membrane exhibited a high surface temperature (∼45 °C), along with an enhanced evaporation rate of 1.29 kg m −2 h −1 and a solar-to-vapor efficiency of 86.4%. The Janus configuration improved the evaporation performance by approximately 2.8 times compared to conventional single-function systems. Moreover, the membrane maintained high evaporation and thermal efficiencies under realistic oily seawater conditions and demonstrated stable long-term operation over repeated cycles (∼10 cycles). These findings highlight the effectiveness of integrating photothermal functionality with asymmetric wettability in a Janus architecture, providing a robust and scalable platform for simultaneous oil–water separation and solar-driven desalination. This approach offers strong potential for practical applications in sustainable oily wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Wolfberry, a medicinal and edible plant rich in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), is noted for its antiaging and antioxidant properties. However, the trace levels and instability of NADH present significant detection challenges. To overcome the inherent limitations of traditional electrochemical linear peak fitting, three machine learning algorithms were introduced: random forest, support vector machine regression (SVR), and long short-term memory neural networks. This pioneering approach established a complex nonlinear relationship model between concentration and response current, effectively mitigating high-concentration linear distortion and interference constraints within the detection system. The Shapley additive prediction method (SHAP) was ultimately employed to quantify the contribution of each electrode potential to the prediction of response currents. This study developed an electrochemical biosensor based on a NbC@NC-ZIF-8/ADH heterojunction substrate, combined with a machine learning–based nonlinear modeling approach, achieving precise quantitative detection of NADH concentration in wolfberry. It exhibits a broad detection range from 1 μM to 1.5 mM, with a detection limit as low as 0.075 μM. The linear prediction model achieved R 2 = 0.976. After constructing a nonlinear model using the SVR machine learning algorithm, the NADH concentration detection accuracy improved to R 2 = 0.996, significantly enhancing detection precision. SHAP analysis indicated that the 0.264 V potential contributed most significantly to the model output. This study established a trace detection research framework encompassing “heterojunction material preparation–density functional theory analysis–nonlinear model construction–SHAP interpretability analysis,” providing a reliable solution for the rapid and accurate detection of NADH in wolfberry. It demonstrates broad application prospects in the field of bioanalysis.

Defect-rich heterointerfaces integrated with adjustable crystalline phases and atom vacancies as a promising strategy to boost electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, challenges remain in precisely controlling the balance between construction and the electromagnetic loss mechanism. In this study, an innovative Co-MoS2-xOx@NC core-shell fiber with multiple loss mechanisms was synthesized through an in-situ growth and carbonization process. This structure ingeniously combines ZIF-67 with a carbon fiber (CNF) conductive network to form continuous conductive pathways, providing an ideal medium for conduction loss. Simultaneously, Co ions embedded between MoS2 layers induce strong lattice distortion and abundant vacancies, forming numerous heterointerfaces between Co, MoS2, and CNF. Significant differences in electron density and charge redistribution at the interface greatly enhance interfacial polarization loss. MoS2 stacked nanosheets extend the transmission path of EMWs, dissipating electromagnetic energy by enhancing multiple reflections and scattering. Consequently, Co-MoS2-xOx@NC fibers achieve a strong EMW with a minimum reflection loss of −66.43 dB at 1.98 mm and a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 5.80 GHz at 1.87 mm. This study highlights synergistic effects of lattice vacancies and heterogeneous interfaces, offering a promising solution for constructing an advanced CNF matrix wave-absorbing material.

This study presents a novel electrochemical strategy for detecting organophosphorus pesticides based on the synergistic catalytic of red kidney bean esterase (RKBE) and iron–cobalt dual-atom catalyst embedded in N-doped carbon carrier (FeCo–NC). RKBE was extracted from the widely cultivated British red kidney beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) . FeCo–NC exhibited excellent electrocatalytic and peroxidase-like activity, catalyzing o -phenylenediamine oxidation to produce electroactive 2,3-diaminophenazine, which served as signal probe generating a sensitive cathodic current. Notably, RKBE product 1-naphthol inhibited FeCo–NC activity, while organophosphorus pesticides counteracted this inhibition by suppressing RKBE activity, restoring the electrochemical signal of 2,3-diaminophenazine. Leveraging this signal-regulation mechanism, a dichlorvos sensor was developed, with wide linear range (50–50,000 pM), low detection limit (14 pM), and excellent real-sample recovery (93.33%–107.08%), demonstrating practical application potential. This study provides an affordable and easy-to-operate approach for large-scale on-site monitoring of organophosphorus pesticide residues in foods.

Silicon suboxides (SiO x ) are promising anodes for lithium-ion batteries, but their practical application is hindered by severe volume fluctuation and sluggish (de)lithiation kinetics. Herein, a hierarchical disproportionated-SiO x -based composite, D-SiO x @NC/C@CNTs/rGO-2, consisting of disproportionated SiO x (D-SiO x ) with in situ generated Si/SiO 2 domains, a nitrogen-doped carbon/carbon (NC/C) interphase, and an interconnected CNTs/rGO conductive framework, is constructed through thermal disproportionation, interphase engineering, and multidimensional conductive-network design. Thermal disproportionation induces the in situ formation of Si domains embedded in a SiO 2 buffering matrix, in which Si provides lithium-storage activity while SiO 2 alleviates volume variation and enhances structural stability. Meanwhile, a conformal nitrogen-doped carbon interphase mitigates chemo-mechanical stress and stabilizes the active interface, and the intertwined CNTs/rGO framework builds an efficient conductive network. As a result, the optimized anode delivers a reversible capacity of 876.4 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , with a capacity retention of 83.7%, while electrode swelling is suppressed to ≈52% versus ≈159% for bare D-SiO x . Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined with distribution of relaxation times reveals reduced interfacial polarization and faster apparent Li + transport. A pre-lithiated LFP||D-SiO x @NC/C@CNTs/rGO-2 full cell also shows an initial Coulombic efficiency of 96.15% and stable cycling over 200 cycles.

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions (2D vdWHs) have received significant attention owing to their extraordinary properties such as the reduced energy barriers and efficient charge transfer. However, there is limited research about the construction of 2D vdWHs in electrocatalysts for improving multifunctional performance. Herein, we report a sandwich-like structured Co-MOF/TiN/NC-240 electrocatalyst with 2D vdWHs by one-step high-temperature solid-state and room-temperature ultrasonication methods, with 2D Co-MOF nanosheets uniformly assembled on the TiN/NC substrate. Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS) reveal that the work function difference between Co-MOF and TiN/NC drives electron transfer from TiN/NC to Co-MOF, thereby modulating the metal oxidation state. The Co-MOF/TiN/NC-240 electrocatalyst exhibits boosted trifunctional electrocatalytic performances for ORR, OER, and HER , which can be attributed to the successful construction of 2D vdWHs, inducing effective electron redistribution via the heterogeneous interface and increasing the number of active sites. Moreover, the zinc-air battery (ZAB) and water-splitting device based on Co-MOF/TiN/NC-240 exhibit enhanced discharge capacity and superior efficiency, respectively. This study not only provides an effective design strategy to develop trifunctional electrocatalysts by constructing 2D vdWHs but also offers valuable insights into the enhanced electrocatalytic performance in the sustainable energy field.
