A novel Zr–CeVO4/TiO2 catalyst was developed for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. Both TiO2 nanosheets (TiO2-NS) and nanoparticles (TiO2-NP) with different crystal facets were used as supports for the catalyst. It was found that the TiO2-NS-supported catalyst showed much better activity, stability and H2O/SO2 durability than the TiO2-NP-supported catalyst. In particular, the catalyst loading amount was much lower than those of previously reported vanadate-based SCR catalysts. The crystal structures and morphologies were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and (high-resolution) transmission electron microscopy ((HR)TEM). The redox properties, surface active species and acid sites of the catalysts were investigated through hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ammonia and nitrogen oxide temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD and NOx-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTs) experiments. The improved activity at lower temperature was due to the presence of more active oxygen species and Brønsted acid sites, as well as the formation of NO2 on the surface of the TiO2 nanosheets which have exposed (001) facets. The enhanced stability and H2O/SO2 durability of Zr–CeVO4/TiO2-NS was due to the limited formation of NH4NO3 and (NH4)2SO4/NH4HSO4. The excellent low operation temperature, low vanadium content and absence of WO3(MoO3) in this catalyst indicated that it has promising potential as a SCR catalyst for practical applications.

Heteropoly acids (HPAs) have been effectively utilized in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO to improve the NH 3 absorption capacity and alkaline/alkali metal resistance for SCR catalysts. However, despite the promise on super-acidities, their other properties that would work on SCR process are still lack of exploration. In this study, a 12-tungstaphosphoric acid (H 3 PW 12 O 40 , HPW) was selected to modify a well-reported CeO 2 catalyst. The resulted CeO 2 /HPW catalyst was subsequently utilized for SCR of NO with excess NH 3 , which revealed a significantly promoted performance in SCR reaction. DRIFT analyses showed that the unique NO 2 absorption capacity of HPW could prevent the NO 2 being further oxidized into nitrate species and the abundant Brønsted acid sites could effectively retain the NH 3 , avoiding them being over-oxidized at evaluated temperatures. The presence of NO 2 was demonstrated able to induce a so called “fast SCR” reaction over the CeO 2 /HPW catalyst, which effectively facilitated the SCR reaction. Furthermore, we have also constructed a CeO 2 @HPW catalyst, which showed an enhanced SO 2 poisoning resistance in SCR reaction.

Elucidating the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on the formation mechanism of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is crucial for the improvement of atmospheric models toward the development of effective control strategies. It is extremely challenging to precisely clarify the impacts of concentrations of anthropogenic pollutants on the molecular compositions and particle number/mass concentrations of SOA under complicated conditions. Here, we report a series of the studies on the effects of anthropogenic pollutants (NO 2 and SO 2 ) on the photooxidation of a representative monoterpene , Δ 3 -carene, by using the scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer, recently-developed vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) photoionization aerosol mass spectrometry , and quantum chemical calculations . The results indicated that with the increase of NO 2 concentration, the SOA yields increased under low-NO 2 conditions but decreased under high-NO 2 conditions. The OH radical was found to be the primary oxidant under low-NO 2 conditions, whereas O 3 became the dominant oxidant under high-NO 2 conditions. SO 2 substantially enhanced the formation of highly oxidized molecules via the acid-catalyzed pathway. A series of new compounds (i.e., organic peroxides , organic nitrates, and organosulfates) were observed and their formation mechanisms were proposed. The present findings highlight the critical role of anthropogenic pollutants in the photooxidation of monoterpene under low and high pollution environments and also open new avenues toward systematic studies of a broader class of volatile organic compounds .

Nitric oxide (NO) gas molecules have demonstrated remarkable anti-tumor effects and minimal susceptibility to drug resistance, establishing as a promising modality for effective tumor treatment. However, how to realize its stable and efficient delivery in vivo is still a challenge. In this study, we have developed a heat-responsive biomimetic nano erythrocyte (M/B@R) by loading the NO donor (BNN6) onto the mesoporous Prussian blue (M-PB) and subsequently enveloping them with red blood cell membranes. The preserved integrity of the red blood cell membrane (RBCm) structure could ensure its excellent biosafety, prolong its circulation time within the bloodstream and then enhance the accumulation of BNN6 at tumor sites. When M/B@R is stimulated by near-infrared light (NIR-II, 808 nm) irradiation, the nanoparticle could generate significant heat for photothermal therapy (PTT) by the characteristic NIR absorption of M-PB and then NO also could be efficiently released. The generated NO further facilitates the formation of ONOO−, a highly toxic species to the tumor, while also alleviating tumor hypoxia. Remarkably, M/B@R, with NIR as the excitation source, induces the combined lethality through hyperthermia, DNA damage, and tumor hypoxia relief. This novel combination strategy provides a new avenue for PTT/NO-induced cancer therapy.

Efficient treatment of cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophication waters by safe and reliable nanomaterials is a big challenge for reducing environmental health risks. Herein, a novel strategy combining palladium clusters (Pd n ) with g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite was presented to achieve high-efficient removal of Microcystis aeruginosa cells through coagulation and breakage. Interestingly, 95.17% of algal cells (initial concentration of 5.6 × 10 6 cells mL −1 ) were promptly removed in the Pd/g-C 3 N 4 (5%) system within only 10 min and without visible light irradiation and persulfate activation. Both the release of potassium ion and microcystin during the removal process and the transmission electron microscope observations of Microcystis aeruginosa cells proved that the integrity of the algal cell membrane was destroyed. The removal of Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) were further confirmed in the next process. Pd metal interaction and breakage against algal cells may cause disruption of algal cells. This study describes a novel technology for the superfast removal of harmful algae and may provide a new insight into the control of cyanobacterial blooms in practical applications.

In this work, a positively charged chitosan-grafted-polyarginine (CS-N-PArg) as the macro-molecular NO donor, and a negatively charged acetalated starch (AcSt-O-PAsp) as a glucose donor, have been synthesized. To achieve the multi-enzymatic cascade system for local generation of self-supply glucose to increase the H 2 O 2 concentration for the subsequent oxidization of L-Arg into NO, the designed positively charged CS-N-PArg, negatively charged AcSt-O-PAsp, glucoamylase (GA) and glucose oxidase (GOx) are absorbed and assembled in the pore of the gelatin sponge via electrostatic interaction to establish a smart antibacterial dressings (CS/St + GOx/GA). Once stimulated by Escherichia coli ( E. coli )-infected wounds (a slightly acidic environment), the cascade reaction system can sequentially induce to generate glucose, H 2 O 2 and NO, which exhibits a meaningful alternative idea for a high-performance antibacterial therapy.

The naturally evolved and intestinal pathogenic Fusobacterium nucleatum ( Fn )-induced drug resistance profoundly impaired the efficacy of chemotherapy against colorectal cancer (CRC). Alternative treatment modalities against Fn -associated CRC are desperately needed. Herein, we engineer an in situ-activated anti-tumor and antibacterial nanoplatform (Cu 2 O/ [email protected] ) to allow photoacoustic (PA) imaging-guided photothermal and NO gas combinatorial therapy for enhanced Fn -associated CRC treatment. The nanoplatform is constructed by loading cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) and nitric oxide (NO) donor (BNN6) into dextran-decorated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN), which is finally surface-functionalized with dextran via dynamic boronate linkage. Cu 2 O can be sulfuretted in situ by endogenous hydrogen sulfide overexpressed in CRC to produce copper sulfide with remarkable PA and photothermal properties, enabling the generation of NO from BNN6 under 808 nm laser irradiation, which is eventually triggered to release by multiple biological cues in the tumor microenvironment . Cu 2 O/ [email protected] exhibits superior biocompatibility , as well as H 2 S-triggered near-infrared-controlled antibacterial and anti-tumor performance in vitro and in vivo via photothermal and NO gas combination therapy. Furthermore, Cu 2 O/ [email protected] provokes systemic immune responses, thereby promoting anti-tumor efficacy. This study provides a conbinational strategy to effectively inhibit tumors and intratumor pathogens for enhanced CRC treatment.

Ordered mesoporous silica materials exhibit enormous potential in industrial production. Since coal fly ash (CFA) is abundant in Si, it has become a green and promising way to utilize CFA by synthesizing porous silica materials. However, the stable crystalline structure of CFA limits the extraction of Si, and the residue is generated during the process of extracting Si. In this work, we proposed a no-residue method to synthesize ordered mesoporous silica out of CFA. Sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) was used to reconstruct the crystals of the CFA, and the calcined mixture then directly reacted with the precipitators. This method combined the process of Si extraction and porous material synthesis. In this method, no residue was generated and the silicon in both amorphous and crystalline phases of CFA was fully utilized. By this method, the extraction efficiency of Si was increased from 31.75% to nearly 100%. The as-synthesized mesoporous silica had a highly-ordered pore structure with a space group of la-3d , a surface area of 663.87 m 2 /g, a pore volume of 0.41 cm 3 /g, and an average pore diameter of 2.73 nm. The mechanism of crystalline transformation and material structure formation were systematically studied. This method provides a new idea to dispose of CFA and synthesize porous silica materials.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a prevalent critical condition in hospitalized patients with an elevated risk of death. Challenges in AKI management persist due to the absence of efficient early diagnostic modalities and the lack of effective therapeutic interventions, imposing significant burdens on medical resources for prolonged treatment. Here, we proposed a second near-infrared (NIR-II) photoacoustic imaging (PAI) guided triggered on-demand release of (nitric oxide) NO from the injury zone to monitor and treat AKI through the anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and oxidative stress-damage-reducing cell- or organ-protective effects of NO. We engineered hollow copper sulfide nanoparticles (Cu 9 S 8 NPs) loaded with platelet membrane-encapsulated NO-releasing precursors (S-Nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine, SNAP), as a nanoplatform for early AKI diagnosis and precise spatiotemporal NO release Besides acting as a drug carrier, the inherent PAI compatible Cu 9 S 8 also enables targeted renal injury localization, exploiting the natural propensity of platelets to accumulate at vascular injury sites, facilitating real-time AKI monitoring in murine models. Experiments demonstrated that nitric oxide delivery nanoparticles can specifically target and accumulate in the kidney, reduce inflammation, and promote damage repair. Overall, this gas therapy strategy represents a new therapeutic pathway for the clinical AKI management.

Neoadjuvant radiotherapy, a preoperative intervention regimen for reducing the stage of primary tumors and surgical margins, has gained increasing attention in the past decade. However, radiation-induced skin damage during neoadjuvant radiotherapy exacerbates surgical injury, remarkably increasing the risk of refractory wounds and compromising the therapeutic effects. Radiation impedes wound healing by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species and inducing cell apoptosis and senescence. Here, a self-assembling peptide (R-peptide) and hyaluronic-acid (HA)-based and cordycepin-loaded superstructure hydrogel is prepared for surgical incision healing after neoadjuvant radiotherapy. Results show that i) R-peptide coassembles with HA to form biomimetic fiber bundle microstructure, in which R-peptide drives the assembly of single fiber through π–π stacking and other forces and HA, as a single fiber adhesive, facilitates bunching through electrostatic interactions. ii) The biomimetic superstructure contributes to the adhesion and proliferation of cells in the surgical wound. iii) Aldehyde-modified HA provides dynamic covalent binding sites for cordycepin to achieve responsive release, inhibiting radiation-induced cellular senescence. iv) Arginine in the peptides provides antioxidant capacity and a substrate for the endogenous production of nitric oxide to promote wound healing and angiogenesis of surgical wounds after neoadjuvant radiotherapy.

Synergistic removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) can be achieved using multifunctional catalytic membranes. In this work, CePO4 nanorods were loaded on the pore surfaces of SiC membranes to construct the CePO4/SiC-X catalytic membranes. The stacked nanorod structure of the CePO4 catalyst layer facilitates the diffusion of gases to the catalyst surface during reactions. Owing to the high specific surface area, rich surface acidity, and strong redox capacity, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane exhibits the best ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (NH3–SCR) denitration activity, achieving >90% NO conversion at a temperature of 250–380 °C and negligible N2O byproduct. In addition, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane demonstrates excellent H2O and SO2 resistance. The performance of dust filtration and simultaneous dust filtration and denitration at 250–350 °C proposed that the dust rejection efficiency reached more than 99% at various conditions, and the dust filtration process did not affect the NH3–SCR performance of the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane. From the above results, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane presents a broad application prospect in the simultaneous dust removal and denitration of high-temperature flue gas.

Radiation ulcers (RUs) represent a devastating and intractable complication arising from radiotherapy, driven by a self-perpetuating pathological cascade featuring persistent oxidative stress, unresolved chronic inflammation, progressive neurovascular destruction, and recurrent bacterial infection, which cannot be sufficiently mitigated by conventional single-target therapeutic interventions. Both electrical stimulation (ES) and nitric oxide (NO) therapy exhibit promising regenerative potential for tissue repair; nevertheless, traditional ES relies on invasive implanted electrodes with unsatisfactory spatial controllability, whereas exogenous NO delivery suffers from insufficient spatiotemporal precision and potential off-target cytotoxicity. Herein, we developed an injectable collagen hydrogel (CKPB) integrating with potassium sodium niobate nanoparticles loaded with an ultrasound-sensitive NO donor. Upon non-invasive ultrasound triggering, this integrated platform achieves wireless generation of localized electric fields as well as spatiotemporally tunable NO release. In a murine RUs model, CKPB/US treatment efficiently facilitated nerve regeneration, M2 macrophage polarization, angiogenesis, antioxidant defense and antibacterial properties. Such multi-faceted therapeutic effects contribute to the recovery of near-physiological epidermal architecture, improved functional blood perfusion, and strengthened overall tissue integrity. Collectively, this work establishes a noninvasive, dual-modality strategy to reconstruct neuro-vascular-immune homeostasis, offering a rational framework for coordinating multimodal signals to target complex pathological microenvironments.
