Photo/electrocatalytic ammonia (NH3) synthesis via nitrous oxide (NOx) reduction is challenged by low NO solubility in electrolytes, inefficient electron and proton supply, and the high cost of separating NH3 from dilute NH4+ product solutions. In this study, we present a continuous, separation-free gas–solid photoreduction strategy for direct NH3 gas production from flue gas, enabled by dynamic band structure regulation of the photocatalyst. Comprehensive in situ characterization and theoretical analysis demonstrate that this approach utilizes photoexcited oxygen vacancies (PVO) in TiO2 to generate high-energy electrons in deep conduction bands, thereby enhancing the reduction capacity, accelerating electron transfer, and lowering the activation energy for both H2O dissociation and NO hydrogenation. The real-time tracking of NO radicals in a gas–solid system using operando EPR provides crucial mechanistic insights into high-energy electron behavior and the NO-to-NH3 conversion pathway, where these high-energy electrons not only promote efficient NO-to-NH3 conversion but also prevent toxic N2O byproduct formation, ensuring selective and efficient reduction. The optimized TiO2–PVO catalyst achieves an NH3 production rate of 79.86 ± 3.48 μmol g–1 h–1 with nearly 100% selectivity, a 16-fold improvement over pristine TiO2. This study offers valuable insights into solar-driven gas–solid NH3 synthesis from flue NOx.

Liver fibrosis (LF) is a leading cause of liver-related mortality worldwide. Although antifibrotic drugs are commonly used in clinical practice, their efficacy remains limited. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the fibrotic liver microenvironment play a crucial role in LF progression. Nanozymes, owing to their enzyme-mimicking catalytic activity and antioxidant properties, offer a promising strategy for LF treatment. Vanadium-based nanozymes exhibit ROS-scavenging capabilities and promote fibrosis reversal, while zirconium (Zr)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), such as UiO-66, possess excellent biocompatibility and catalytic activity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of nanozymes is hindered by their intrinsic catalytic limitations. Ultrasound (US), a non-invasive therapeutic modality, has been shown to enhance nanozyme activity and improve treatment outcomes. In this study, we developed a dual-nanozyme composite (UiO-66/V 2 C/L-Arg/pPB, UVLp) with targeted ROS-scavenging and L-arginine (L-Arg) delivery capabilities. Upon ultrasound exposure, UVLp releases L-Arg and nanozymes, facilitating nitric oxide (NO) generation, alleviating oxidative stress, and mitigating liver fibrosis. This work introduces a novel ultrasound-activated nanozyme platform for LF therapy, providing valuable insights for clinical translation.

A compact optical fiber sensor based on a no-core fiber (NCF) segment functionalized with a Cu²⁺-imprinted chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA) film was developed to enable operando on-line monitoring of Cu²⁺ with high selectivity and sensitivity in complex environmental water matrices. The optimal length of the NCF segment was determined to be 1 cm based on simulation and experimental evaluation, under which the highest sensitivity was achieved. The pseudo-second-order kinetic behavior of Cu²⁺ adsorption was first validated by analyzing the time-dependent shift of the interference valley, providing direct spectral evidence of a chemisorption-driven mechanism. A sensitivity of 0.0768 nm/μM and a detection limit of 0.1245 μM were obtained. A rapid response time of less than 20 s and excellent measurement repeatability, with strong specificity toward the target ion and relative standard deviation below 5 percent over five regeneration cycles, were also demonstrated. The sensor was further applied to spiked water samples from the Yangtze River and tap water. By integrating ion-imprinting technology with an optimized NCF-based fiber structure, a portable, cost-effective, and interference-resistant platform has been established for real-time and on-site monitoring of heavy metal ions in complex aquatic environments.

The effectiveness of antitumor immunotherapy is limited to immune cell infiltration into solid tumors, primarily via T-cell migration through tumor blood vessels. This study introduces a multifunctional nitric oxide (NO)-driven hollow gold Janus nanomotor (HAM) designed to promote tumor blood vessel normalization and increase T-cell infiltration, thereby enhancing the immune response against tumors. It is revealed that self-generated NO facilitates the penetration of HAM into tumors and increases pericyte coverage of blood vessels, thereby enhancing intratumoral T-cell infiltration. HAMs then induce and capture whole-tumor antigens to enhance T-cell activation as an in situ cancer vaccine. Additionally, vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGFC) is used in combination to induce functional lymphangiogenesis, aiding dendritic cell (DC) migration of tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLNs). In B16F10 mice, the proportion of tumor-infiltrating T cells increased from 0.5% to 27.4% while that of mature DCs in TDLNs increased from 4.3% to 16.6%, markedly improving tumor-killing effects. Similar outcomes are observed in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice. Collectively, this study highlights the importance of paving the way for intratumoral infiltration of immune cells via nanomotors, which provides a novel idea for enhancing antitumor immunotherapeutic effects.

Nitric oxide (NO) gas molecules have demonstrated remarkable anti-tumor effects and minimal susceptibility to drug resistance, establishing as a promising modality for effective tumor treatment. However, how to realize its stable and efficient delivery in vivo is still a challenge. In this study, we have developed a heat-responsive biomimetic nano erythrocyte (M/B@R) by loading the NO donor (BNN6) onto the mesoporous Prussian blue (M-PB) and subsequently enveloping them with red blood cell membranes. The preserved integrity of the red blood cell membrane (RBCm) structure could ensure its excellent biosafety, prolong its circulation time within the bloodstream and then enhance the accumulation of BNN6 at tumor sites. When M/B@R is stimulated by near-infrared light (NIR-II, 808 nm) irradiation, the nanoparticle could generate significant heat for photothermal therapy (PTT) by the characteristic NIR absorption of M-PB and then NO also could be efficiently released. The generated NO further facilitates the formation of ONOO−, a highly toxic species to the tumor, while also alleviating tumor hypoxia. Remarkably, M/B@R, with NIR as the excitation source, induces the combined lethality through hyperthermia, DNA damage, and tumor hypoxia relief. This novel combination strategy provides a new avenue for PTT/NO-induced cancer therapy.

Excessive ClO 2 tends to be produced and escape, causing secondary pollution when wet oxidation of NO with NaClO 2 is conducted under acidic conditions. NaClO 2 alkaline oxidation has accordingly received a wide attention. In this work, NaClO 2 alkaline oxidation of NO has been systematically studied in a self-built spray tower. Focus has been placed on the effects of acidic components contained in flue gas such as CO 2 , HCl and SO 2 . ClO 2 and HClO 2 are considered more effective for NO oxidation, which tend to be produced in an acidic environment. HCO 3 − has a relatively higher hydrolysis coefficient than ClO 2 − , leading to more HClO 2 formation. Similarity is found with HCl although the effect is not as significant as CO 2 due to its low concentration in flue gas. SO 2 exhibits a negative effect on NO removal since HClO 2 can be consumed by SO 2 . Nearly 100 % NO removal efficiency can be achieved although there is an initial time delay necessary for the neutralization of alkaline environment. A similar performance has been observed for HCl. On the contrary, SO 2 exhibits a negative effect on NO removal due to the competition with NO in the consumption of NaClO 2 . Additives such as NaClO and CTAC were also used to enhance NaClO 2 alkaline oxidation performance. Interesting to note that CTAC can nearly eliminate the time delay by intensifying the gas-liquid mass transfer.

The growing danger of bacterial infections has resulted in an urgent need for developing new antibacterial approaches. In this study, cellulose nanofiber-copper sulfide (CNF-CuS), calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ), and L-arginine (LA) were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) hydrogels to fabricate a multifunctional PVA/CS/CNF-CuS/CaO 2 /LA composite hydrogel with near-infrared (NIR)-activated photothermal, photodynamic, and gas therapies. Antibacterial tests on PVA/CS/CNF-CuS/CaO 2 /LA showed that, after a 10-minute NIR irradiation period, the hydrogel achieved antibacterial rates of 99.3% against E. coli and 99.7% against S. aureus. The marked improvement in bactericidal performance can be attributed to the synergistic interaction of elevated temperature, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and nitric oxide (NO). Given the effective antibacterial property of the PVA/CS/CNF-CuS/ CaO 2 /LA hydrogel, this study offers new insights into the design of composite hydrogels for wound healing and wound dressing applications.

Plants release a variety of defensive volatiles in response to biotic stress. The present study examined interactions between Colletotrichum fructicola and the defense volatiles induced by this fungal species in the tea cultivar “Qiancha No. 1”. Analysis of the volatiles emitted from C. fructicola-infected leaves of “Qiancha No. 1” revealed that four volatiles showed a relative content increase of more than 2%. Fungicidal activity assays demonstrated that decanal exhibited the strongest antifungal activity among the four volatiles. Further physiological experiments demonstrated that the antifungal mechanism of decanal was associated with disruption of the cell wall and the membrane. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the genes encoding Chitinase 1, chitin synthase 1, and endochitinase42 were identified as potential targets that may be involved in cell wall degradation by decanal. Additionally, genes encoding cytochrome P450-DIT2 and multidrug resistance protein fer6 were identified as potential targets that may be associated with membrane damage. This study is the first to demonstrate that decanal acts as a direct defense volatile in the interaction between C. fructicola and “Qiancha No. 1,” highlighting its potential as an effective antifungal agent.

Nitrogen dioxide is a hazard to the natural environment and human health. Therefore, it is necessary to design a nitrogen dioxide sensor to detect NO 2 . In this work, using SnCl 2 as the raw material and loofah sponge as the bio-template, SnO 2 -bio was synthesized through simple immersion and calcination, inheriting the multilayer mesoporous structure of the bio-template. Compared to commercially available SnO 2 , this material has a larger specific surface area and offers more oxygen vacancies for the reaction with adsorbed gases. At 92℃, the SnO 2 -bio sensor exhibits a higher response value of 247.6–5 ppm NO 2 . Meanwhile, it has faster response and recovery speeds of 65/43 s, respectively. The SnO 2 -bio sensor also has excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and cycling stability. Furthermore, in-situ techniques and density functional theory were employed to investigate the mechanism of sensitization and the effect of oxygen vacancies on gas adsorption.

Elucidating the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on the formation mechanism of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is crucial for the improvement of atmospheric models toward the development of effective control strategies. It is extremely challenging to precisely clarify the impacts of concentrations of anthropogenic pollutants on the molecular compositions and particle number/mass concentrations of SOA under complicated conditions. Here, we report a series of the studies on the effects of anthropogenic pollutants (NO 2 and SO 2 ) on the photooxidation of a representative monoterpene , Δ 3 -carene, by using the scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer, recently-developed vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) photoionization aerosol mass spectrometry , and quantum chemical calculations . The results indicated that with the increase of NO 2 concentration, the SOA yields increased under low-NO 2 conditions but decreased under high-NO 2 conditions. The OH radical was found to be the primary oxidant under low-NO 2 conditions, whereas O 3 became the dominant oxidant under high-NO 2 conditions. SO 2 substantially enhanced the formation of highly oxidized molecules via the acid-catalyzed pathway. A series of new compounds (i.e., organic peroxides , organic nitrates, and organosulfates) were observed and their formation mechanisms were proposed. The present findings highlight the critical role of anthropogenic pollutants in the photooxidation of monoterpene under low and high pollution environments and also open new avenues toward systematic studies of a broader class of volatile organic compounds .

Kiwifruit has extremely high nutritional value, but its rootstock strongly influences the physiology and metabolism of its scion fruit. Here, we evaluated the influence of a new kiwifruit rootstock, Actinidia valvata ′Zhongmikangzhen No. 2′, on the leaves and fruits of the scion A. deliciosa ′Zhongmi 2′. The leaf size, leaf mineral element contents, fruit size (single-fruit weight, longitudinal diameter and transverse diameter), and fruit quality traits (soluble sugar content, vitamin C content, total acidity and dry matter content) of ′Zhongmi 2′ grafted on ′Zhongmikangzhen No. 2′ (zk) and A. deliciosa seedling (zp) rootstock were measured at five fruit developmental stages (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 days after flowering (DAF)). The zk fruits were significantly larger than those of zp and their leaves were also longer. The leaf length and width of the zk fruits was significantly greater than those of the zp fruits. The leaf contents of Cu, P and Mo significantly differed at 60, 120 and 120 DAF, respectively. The fruits of the two stock–scion combinations may presented different flavors. UPLC–MS/MS analysis of the fruit metabolome revealed 1697 differentially expressed metabolites. These metabolites, which were divided into multiple categories through KEGG analysis, indicated significant differences in fruit quality and resistance. Decanoic acid (decreased in zk-hard) and 9-oxononanoic acid (increased in zk-hard) may collectively affect fruit aroma. Moreover, α-linolenic acid and 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid (a precursor of jasmonic acid), both of which increase in zk-hard, contribute to increased nutritional value and are involved in the abiotic stress response, respectively. This study revealed the effects of different rootstock–scion combinations on fruit quality traits and leaf mineral elements and provides a basis for studying the mechanisms of rootstock–scion interactions.

Currently, the primary challenge in industrial applications of CO-selective catalytic reduction of NO (CO-SCR) is the shortage of efficient catalysts that can tolerate the presence of oxygen (O 2 ). In this study, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have developed an effective Co 3 O 4 catalyst incorporated with both oxygen vacancies (V O ) and cobalt vacancies (V Co ). This catalyst achieved 100 % NO conversion and 100 % N 2 selectivity at temperatures ranging from 200 to 350 °C, even in the presence of up to 5 vol% O 2 . DFT calculations and experimental results demonstrate a strong interaction between V O and V Co in the CO-SCR process. The presence of V Co enhances the NO adsorption on adjacent O atoms and promotes the formation of nitrite intermediates. Meanwhile, V Co and V O synergistically promote the dissociation of N-O bonds, thereby improving the NO conversion and the N 2 selectivity. This approach opens up new possibilities for designing advanced catalysts tailored for various environmental and industrial applications.
