High-performance room-temperature NO2 gas sensors enabled by 0D SnO2/1D WO3 heterostructures for wearable applications

Xiaohong Jiang,Zhimin GUO,Shiqun ZHANG,Leilei JIA,Yawei WANG,Xinrui ZENG,Yaxin LEI,Hanbin Liu,Guodong Liu,Zhijian Li,Wenliang ZHANG,zhibin lei

The sensor for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection plays a crucial role in environmental monitoring and human health. However, traditional oxide-based NO2 sensors often suffer from high operating temperatures, low sensitivity, and inherent rigidity. In this work, a high-performance, wearable NO2 gas sensor that can work at room temperature was developed based on a nanocomposite of single-crystal tungsten oxide (WO3) and tin dioxide (SnO2). The results show that the fabricated SnO2/WO3 based sensor demonstrates superior performance than the bare WO3 sensors. Specifically, the Sn/W-O-12 based sensor shows a remarkable response of 27.5% to 5 ppm NO2, a low detection limit of 218 ppb at room temperature. Furthermore, its response/recovery time to 0.8 ppm NO2 is 63/38 s, respectively. The sensing device also exhibits excellent humidity resistance (50%) and long-term stability (90 days). The enhanced NO2 sensing performance can be attributed to the formation of heterojunction interface, achieved by the dispersion of small-sized SnO2 particles onto WO3 nanorods, which increases the specific surface area and facilitates charge transfer and gas molecule adsorption on the surface. Additionally, a NO2 gas detection and alarm system was constructed to realize the real-time display and alarm functions. This work contributes to the detection of low concentrations of NO2 at room temperature, fostering the development of wearable sensing systems.

Room-temperature and highly sensitivity NO2 detection with UV excitation for bimetallic MOF derived ZnO/NiO heterostructure

Luan Fu,Lulu Du,Zheng Lu,Weizhong Tan,Xiaohui Shi,Li Lv,Pinhua Zhang,Guangliang Cui

The fabrication of micro/nano metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) heterostructures, employing bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) as self-sacrificing templates, can significantly enhance the sensitivity of the resulting nanocomposite materials. Herein, ZnO/NiO heterostructures derived from Ni/Zn Bi-MOFs were fabricated, which achieved outstanding UV-assisted NO 2 -sensing performance at room temperature. Our experiments reveal a sensitive dependence of the sensing performance of ZnO/NiO heterostructures sensor on calcination temperature. The ZnO/NiO-600 sensor, which was calcined at 600 °C, demonstrated the best sensing performance, achieving 3-fold sensitivity enhancement over pure ZnO. Under UV irradiation, the response value to 1 ppm NO 2 reaches 6.78, with corresponding response and recovery times of 15 s and 40 s, respectively. Furthermore, the ZnO/NiO-600 sensor exhibits an exceptional detection limit as low as 20 ppb and a strong linear response within the range of 20 ppb–1 ppm (R 2  = 0.994). The excellent sensing performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of several factors, including the mesoporous structure of MOF-derived MOS materials, the formation of ZnO/NiO heterostructures, and UV irradiation. This work provides a promising strategy for the development of a novel Bi-MOF-derived MOS heterosturcture that can be applied to photoelectric gas sensor.

Fabrication of flexible room-temperature NO2 sensors by direct laser writing of In2O3 and graphene oxide composites

Rui You,Dong-Dong Han,Fangmeng Liu,Yong-Lai Zhang,Geyu Lu

In this work, we reported the fabrication of flexible NO 2 sensors arrays operating at room temperature on a composite film of In 2 O 3 and graphene oxide (GO) by direct laser writing (DLW) technology. The laser treatment not only induced the photoreduction of GO , leading to a highly porous structure due to the removal of oxygen groups, but also permitted mask-free patterning through a programmable manner, enabling flexible integration of sensor arrays on any substrates. We demonstrated the fabrication of a 2 × 4 NO 2 sensors array on a flexible polyimide substrate within 10 min. Our NO 2 sensors based on In 2 O 3 and reduced GO (In 2 O 3 @RGO) show liner NO 2 sensing properties at room temperature, good responsivity and recovery properties, as well as excellent selectivity towards NO 2 . We deem that the DLW fabrication of flexible NO 2 sensorsarrays may contribute to the development of flexible electronics.

Application of 3D hierarchical monoclinic-type structural Sb-doped WO3 towards NO2 gas detection at low temperature

Juanjuan Qi,Ke Chen,Yi Xing,Hua Fan,Hewei Zhao,Jie Yang,Lidong Li,Bingyi Yan,Jing Zhou,Lin Guo,Shihe Yang

Currently, the development of semiconducting metal oxide (SMO)-based gas sensors with innovative modification and three-dimensional (3D) structural designs has become a significant scientific interest due to their potential for addressing key technological challenges. Herein, gas sensing devices based on the 3D hierarchical monoclinic-type structural Sb-doped WO3 (HMSW) gas sensing material were successfully constructed by ordered assembly of urchin-like monoclinic-type structural (P2/m) Sb-doped WO2.72 (W18O49) (UMSW) nanocrystals and nanowires. The crystalline microstructure, composition, morphological characteristics, and possible growth mechanisms were systematically investigated. The results of the gas sensor measurements, performed simultaneously on multiple samples, indicated that the 3D HMSW material has superior sensitivity (S = 122) and high selectivity to ppm-level NO2 at 30 °C with a significantly larger response than the best-reported values from other WO3-based gas sensors fabricated so far. All the results clearly demonstrate that the combined effects of abundant structural defects derived from Sb doping modification, reduced band gap, and 3D hierarchical microstructure synergistically play a key role in the NO2 gas sensing performance. Such excellent gas sensing performance foresees the great potential application of 3D hierarchical structural WO3-based sensors for fast and effective detection of toxic gases that can aid in human health and public safety.

A carbon-based FET NO2 sensor modulated by the interfacial electric double layer of ionogel sensing dielectric

Luozi Liu,Yan Tang,Junlin Wu,Qin Liu,Jinyong Hu,Bohao Liu,Yong Zhang

A side gate FET gas sensor based on ionogel sensing dielectric was designed. • The FET sensor exhibited good NO 2 sensing performance at low side-gate bias of −1 V. • Gas sensing mechanism of gas-induced electric double layer variation was proposed. Field-effect transistors (FETs) have attracted considerable attention in gas detection due to their inherent signal amplification capability. Most of these sensors, whether based on a sensing channel or a sensing gate, still suffer from limited stability and excessive gate voltage, which is detrimental to low-power detection. Herein, a side-gate carbon-based FET (S-FET) gas sensor based on an ionogel sensing dielectric layer is rationally designed. By designing a side-gate structure with the ionogel covering the channel, the channel is isolated from the ambient environment and the ionogel sensing dielectric is fully exposed, which benefits the electrical and sensing stability of the sensor. Besides, the electric double layer (EDL) formed within the ionogel under a low applied voltage serves as an additional electric potential across the side gate and channel, resulting in effective control of the channel conductivity and significantly reducing the gate voltage of the sensor. The fabricated sensor exhibits a response of approximately 182% toward 10 ppm of NO 2 and demonstrates reliable gas-sensing performance over the 0.15–10 ppm range under a low side gate voltage of −1 V. Finally, a gas-sensing mechanism based on gas-induced EDL modulation is proposed. This work proposes a new strategy for fabricating high-performance FET gas sensors based on ionogel sensing dielectrics, providing a reference for designing low-voltage sensing electronics. Controllable Epitaxial-like Growth of Bi2S3/MoS2 Hybrid Aerogel Nanostructures for Sensitive NO2 Detection at Room Temperature

Li Liu,Yang Gao,Qinghua Hu

Constructing heterogeneous interfaces on a nanoscale that can prominently improve the gas-sensing properties has been comprehensively reported. However, the effect of parallel heterostructures formed by unique synthetic means on nitrogen dioxide room-temperature sensing properties still needs to be clarified, which hinders the development of heterostructured hybrid materials in the field of gas sensing. In this study, large-sized MoS2 was parallel-wrapped on the surface of nanoscale Bi2S3 rods, and then, the Bi2S3/MoS2 nanocomposite aerogels were formed by freeze drying and calcination. The NO2 sensing performance of the hybrids and possible surface processes at room temperature have been investigated and deduced. The as-prepared nanocomposite aerogels (Bi2S3/MoS2-2) exhibited a larger specific surface area, a mass of active defect sites, and a higher charge density, thus possessing 15- and 20-times higher response than that of pristine MoS2 nanosheets and Bi2S3 nanorods, respectively. This study provides an efficient way to synthesize large-area parallel heterostructures between two bis-sulfides (Bi2S3 and MoS2), leading to excellent NO2 gas sensing performance.

Au nanoparticles decorated flower-like SnS2/Ti3C2 MXene microcomposite for high performance NO2 sensing at room temperature

Wenlei Zhang,Weiheng Wang,Yunfan Wang,Lei Sun,Yongjiao Sun,Jie Hu

The continuous discharging of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) significantly damaged global environment and human health. In this study, SnS 2 microflowers/Ti 3 C 2 MXene heterostructure was modified by Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the detection of NO 2 at room temperature. The microcomposite decorated with 6 wt% AuNPs exhibited excellent sensing properties including response value of 5.34 to 1 ppm NO 2 , which was almost 5 times higher than that of undecorated one. The limit of detection lowered from 500 ppb to 5 ppb with the addition of AuNPs. Besides, the AuNPs decorated SnS 2 /MXene microcomposite revealed good selectivity, fatigue resistance, as well as potential application towards flexible sensing. The NO 2 gas sensing mechanism of AuNPs decorated with SnS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 MXene microcomposite was discussed through density functional theory calculation on adsorption behavior and transferred charges in detail. This work may provide an important pathway for the future development of NO 2 sensors at room temperature.

High-Performance Room-Temperature NO2 Gas Sensor Based on Au-Loaded SnO2 Nanowires under UV Light Activation

Bo Zhang,Shuai Zhang,Yi Xia,Pingping Yu,Yin Xu,Yue Dong,Qufu Wei,Jing Wang

Optical excitation is widely acknowledged as one of the most effective means of balancing sensor responses and response/recovery properties at room temperature (RT, 25 °C). Moreover, noble metals have been proven to be suitable as photosensitizers for optical excitation. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) determines the liberalization of quasi-free electrons in noble metals under light irradiation, and numerous injected electrons in semiconductors will greatly promote the generation of chemisorbed oxygen, thus elevating the sensor response. In this study, pure SnO2and Au/SnO2nanowires (NWs) were successfully synthesized through the electrospinning method and validated using XRD, EDS, HRTEM, and XPS. Although a Schottky barrier led to a much higher initial resistance of the Au/SnO2composite compared with pure SnO2at RT in the dark, the photoinduced resistance of the Au/SnO2composite became lower than that of pure SnO2under UV irradiation with the same intensity, which confirmed the effect of LSPR. Furthermore, when used as sensing materials, a detailed comparison between the sensing properties of pure SnO2and Au/SnO2composite toward NO2in the dark and under UV irradiation highlighted the crucial role of the LSPR effects. In particular, the response of Au/SnO2NWs toward 5 ppm NO2could reach 65 at RT under UV irradiation, and the response/recovery time was only 82/42 s, which far exceeded those under Au modification-only or optical excitation-only. Finally, the gas-sensing mechanism corresponding to the change in sensor performance in each case was systematically proposed.Keywords:Au-loaded;UV irradiation;synergistic effect;NO2;gas sensor

Experimental and kinetic study on JP-10/air autoignition and the effect of NO2 at high temperatures

Lei Shi,Ping Xu,Rui Wang,Weixin Tang,Tao Ding,Rongpei Jiang,Changhua Zhang

Ignition delay times of JP-10 in air and the vitiation effect of NO 2 on JP-10 autoignition at high temperatures were investigated behind reflected shock waves. The experiments were carried out at pressures of 2 and 10 atm, temperatures between 900 and 1460 K, fuel lean and stoichiometric conditions with and without 1.0 % NO 2 . The experimental results show that the ignition delay times of JP-10/air decrease with the increase of pressure or the decrease of equivalence ratio. The effect of adding 1.0 % NO 2 is pressure dependence. At 10 atm, the addition of NO 2 promotes the ignition of fuel, which shortens the ignition delay time. At 2 atm, the addition of 1.0 % NO 2 inhibits the ignition of JP-10, which prolongs the ignition delay time. A chemical kinetic mechanism of JP-10/NO 2 consisting of 290 species and 1768 reactions was developed by extending from a C0-C5 alkane and a cyclopentene sub-mechanism. The proposed mechanism has been well validated by ignition delay times, laminar flame speeds and species concentration profiles from literature. To further investigate the autoignition of JP-10 and the vitiation effect of NO 2 , kinetics analyses including reaction pathways and sensitivity coefficients were performed by the developed mechanism. The main consumption pathways of JP-10 in air are H-abstraction reactions from JP-10 by HO 2 radicals. With 1.0 % NO 2 vitiation, the addition of NO 2 has a strong effect on JP-10 consumption via the H-abstraction pathway JP-10 + NO 2  = C 10 H 15  + HONO, which further affects the autoignition of JP-10.

Dye-modified core/shell NaGdF4:Yb,Er@NaYF4 nanoparticles for the detection and irritation assessment of NO2−

Junshan Hu,Fengyi Wang,Wei Jin,Changchun Ding

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have great potential applications in biological imaging, medical treatment and optical sensing. However, the development of an inorganic-organic hybrid fluorescent probe to accurately detect noxious ions and scientifically assess irritation in vivo remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a fluorescent nanoprobe for detecting nitrites (NO 2 − ) and assessing the irritation in jellyfish cell. The nanoprobe was assembled by linking neutral red to the surface of polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified NaGdF 4 :Yb,Er@NaYF 4 core/shell nanoparticles. The nanoprobe could efficiently capture the NO 2 − in jellyfish and simultaneously visualize the process. It's known that the intensity ratio of green to red emission (IRGRE) of neutral red modified upconversion nanoparticles increases linearly with the amount of NO 2 − increasing. Moreover, the irritation of NO 2 − was assessed in jellyfish cells using neutral red modified fluorescent nanoprobe based on cell imaging and spectrum signals, that NO 2 − has irrecoverable injury to the cells. This work based on dye-modified upconversion luminescence nanoprobe is expected to shed further light on the biological analysis and detection of ions.

Mixed potential type YSZ-based NO2 sensors with efficient three-dimensional three-phase boundary processed by electrospinning

Siyuan Lv,Yueying Zhang,Li Jiang,Lianjing Zhao,Jing Wang,Fangmeng Liu,Chenguang Wang,Xu Yan,Peng Sun,Lijun Wang,Geyu Lu

A mixed potential type yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based NO 2 sensor attached with NiO sensing electrode (SE) with efficient three-phase boundary (TPB) processed by electrospinning technology was fabricated. The effect of the structure and area of TPB on the gas sensing performance of the sensor was investigated systematically. The YSZ nanofiber array was directly deposited on YSZ substrate by electrospinning method to construct efficient three-dimensional TPB. The sensor (S30) based on YSZ substrate processed by electrospinning method with the flow rate of 1.5 mL/h for 15 min and NiO-SE exhibited the highest sensitivity (77.4 mV/decade) to 5–500 ppm NO 2 at 510 °C, which was 2.6 times as the sensor (S00) with unprocessed YSZ substrate. The response value of S30 to 100 ppm NO 2 could reach 109 mV at 510 °C, which increased about 51 mV comparing with S00. Moreover, the sensor (S30) also displays fast response and recovery rates, good repeatability, excellent selectivity, moisture resistance and long-term stability. The elevated NO 2 sensing performance of the sensor is attributed to more active sites of electrochemical reactions by increased area of three-dimensional TPB.

Defective Nickle–Iron Layered Double Hydroxide for Enhanced Photocatalytic NO Oxidation with Significant Alleviation of NO2 Production

Xiaoyu Li,Xiaoshu Lv,Jian Pan,Peng Chen,Huihui Peng,Yan Jiang,Haifeng Gong,Guangming Jiang,Li'an Hou

Photocatalysis offers a sustainable avenue for the oxidative removal of low concentrations of NO x from the atmosphere. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising candidate photocatalysts owing to their unique layered and tunable chemical structures, and the abundant hydroxide (OH − ) moieties on their surfaces that are hydroxyl radical ( • OH) precursors. However, inferior charge separation and limited active sites on an LDH hinder its practical applications. Herein, we developed a facile N 2 H 4 -driven etching (et) approach that introduces dual Ni 2+ and OH − vacancies (Ni v and OH v ) into NiFe-LDH nanosheets (referred to as NiFe-LDH-et) that facilitate improved charge-carrier separation and the formation of active Lewis acidic sites (Fe 3+ and Ni 2+ exposed at OH v ). In contrast to inert pristine LDH, NiFe-LDH-et actively removes NO when illuminated with visible light. Specifically, Ni 76 Fe 24 -LDH - et etched in 1.50 mmol·L −1 N 2 H 4 solution removes 32.8% of the NO from continuously flowing air (NO-feed concentration: ∼500 parts per billion (ppb)) when illuminated with visible light, thereby outperforming most reported catalysts. Experimental and theoretical data reveal that the dual vacancies promote the production of reactive oxygen species ( • O 2 − and • OH) and the adsorption of NO on the LDH. In-situ spectroscopy revealed that NO is preferentially adsorbed at Lewis acidic sites, particularly exposed Fe 3+ sites, and then converted into NO + that is subsequently oxidized to NO 3 − without the formation of any of the more toxic NO 2 intermediate, thereby alleviating risks associated with its production and emission.
