Phosphorus-catalyzed graphitization strategy toward superior Na-storage performance of Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7/C cathodes

Wang Ziyan,Zhou Meng,Zhang Rongzheng,Zou Yuening,Zhang Sikai,An Wen,Hu Hai,Huang Zhifeng,Ye Zhongqiang,Liu Li

The Na 4 Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 /C composite (NFPP-E) featuring a highly graphitized N- and P-co-doped carbon coating and hierarchical pore structure was successfully synthesized using a facile ball-milling-calcination approach. Ethylenediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid) (EDTMPA) acts as a multifunctional precursor and concurrently serves as a chelating, phosphorus, carbon, nitrogen, and pore-forming agent. The unique “phosphorus-catalyzed graphitization” effect during EDTMPA pyrolysis plays a pivotal role; the released active phosphorus oxides facilitate the ordered transformation of the carbon matrix, thereby yielding a highly graphitized N- and P-co-doped carbon coating with a low defect density. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated significant performance enhancements of NFPP-E relative to the sample prepared with conventional NH 4 H 2 PO 4 . Specifically, NFPP-E delivered a high reversible capacity of 103.09 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 C (1 C = 129 mA·g −1 ) and retained 77.41 mAh·g −1 even at an elevated rate of 10 C, demonstrating excellent rate capability. Furthermore, it exhibited superior long-term cycling stability, with a capacity retention rate of 94.9% after 500 cycles at 1 C. When assembled into a full cell with hard carbon as the anode, the NFPP-E achieved a capacity retention rate of 92.74% over 200 cycles, highlighting its great potential for practical applications. This study not only uncovers the universal principle for regulating the structure and properties of carbon layers via the “phosphorus-catalyzed graphitization” mechanism using organic phosphonic acid precursors but also offers a novel strategy for the development of high-performance and low-cost cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

J.C. Xi,Y.F. Yuan,G.C. Cai,B.X. Wang,Y.Z. Huang,S.Y. Guo,P.F. Du

As a novel anode material for sodium-ion batteries, ultrafine Ni 0.85 Se nanoparticles encapsulated inside hollow porous carbon spheres (HPCS@Ni 0.85 Se) are prepared by impregnating Ni(NO 3 ) 2 into HPCSs, calcination and selenization, which is based on the strong capillary effect of HPCSs. Material characterization reveals that Ni 0.85 Se nanoparticles with a diameter of 5–15 nm are evenly dispersed and intimately coupled to the internal wall of HPCSs, and the content of Ni 0.85 Se reaches 52.81%. HPCSs as unique reactors and Ni 0.85 Se carriers improve electronic conductivity of Ni 0.85 Se, facilitate electrolyte penetration and storage, buffer volume variation of Ni 0.85 Se, effectively confine Ni 0.85 Se during long-term cycles. Consequently, HPCS@Ni 0.85 Se exhibits excellent cycling durability and extraordinary rate capability. High reversible capacities of 341 mA h g −1  at 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles, 280 mA h g −1  at 5 A g −1 after 2000 cycles and 305 mA h g −1  at 10 A g −1 after 540 cycles are achieved. The reaction kinetics and Na  +  storage mechanism are further analyzed by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectra measurements. Ex-situ characterizations confirm outstanding structural stability of HPCS@Ni 0.85 Se. It is demonstrated that HPCS@Ni 0.85 Se is an excellent anode material, and this unique HPCS-based nanoencapsulation structure is an effective composite strategy for transition metal selenides .

Enhanced optical properties of lead-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 nanocrystals by doping of Na ions

Zhigang Li,Yuanjie Sun,Hongtao Zhao

Lead free double perovskite nanocrystals is an ideal alternate considering its nontoxic and stable property comparing with their counterpart lead halide perovskite NCs. A simple solution synthesis strategy was used to prepare lead-free double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 nanocrystals (NCs) doped with Na ions , resulting in NCs with a monodisperse state, homogeneous morphology, and good crystallinity . By adjusting the amount of Na + doping, the band gap of the NCs was significantly increased from 2.57 eV to 3.00 eV. Furthermore, the relatively low value of photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the original Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 NCs (∼0.5%) was increased to about 8.5% when doped with 60% Na + . Additionally, the exciton lifetime of the NCs was extended to 16.15 ns compared to the original 2 ns. As a result, the doping of Na  +  significantly enhanced the PLQY of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 NCs, indicating their potential value for use in optoelectronic devices .

Different effect of Li+, Na+, K+ -doping on crystal structure and electrical property of Sr0.6Ba0.4Nb2O6

Jian Guo,Xinrui Yang,Yulong Yang,Shuting Pang,Shan-Tao Zhang,Bin Yang

Ferroelectric Sr 0.6 Ba 0.4 Nb 2 O 6 (SBN) shows typical unfilled tetragonal tungsten bronze structure where 1/6 A sites and all C sites are unoccupied. The presence of such structural vacancy provides the possibility to further modulate the crystal structure and electrical properties. In this work, alkali ions (Li + , Na + , K + ) doped SBN ceramics have been fabricated via solid-solution reaction method. In general, each doping promotes the crystal structure evolves from unfilled toward filled tungsten bronze. However, the different doping ion radius causes the differences in occupying initial structural vacancies, resulting in significantly different electrical properties, Li + doping enhances relaxor characteristic whereas Na + and K + doping lead to normal ferroelectric behavior, accompanying an increase in Curie temperature ( T c ) from 36 °C of SBN to 40, 212, 148 °C of Li + , Na + and K + doping, respectively. Benefiting from improved relaxor degree and high density, the Li + doped SBN displays a good energy storage performance. Since the ratio of Sr/Ba and (Sr + Ba)/Nb has not been changed, this work presents direct evidence for the effect of structural vacancy on crystal structure and properties, as well as inspiration for further work on unfilled tungsten bronze.

A high-performance, all-solid-state Na+ selective sensor printed with eco-friendly conductive ink

Dengke Wang,Wanggang Zhang,Jian Wang,Xiaohong Li,Yiming Liu

In recent years, the integration of flexible printed electronics and electrochemical sensors has emerged as a new approach for developing wearable biochemical detecting devices. Among the materials utilized in flexible printed electronics, carbon-based conductive inks are considered to be crucial. In this study, we propose a cost-effective, highly conductive, and environmentally friendly ink formulation utilizing graphite and carbon black (CB) as conductive fillers, resulting in a very low sheet resistance of 15.99 Ω sq−1 (conductivity of 2.5 × 103 S m−1) and a printed film thickness of 25 μm. The unique “sandwich” structure of the working electrode (WE) printed with this ink enhances its electrical conductivity, leading to high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability, with almost no water film generated between the WE and the ion-selective membrane (ISM), strong ion selectivity, long-term stability, and anti-interference. The lower detection limit of the sensor for Na+ is 0.16 mM with a slope of 75.72 mV per decade. To validate the sensor's usability, we analyzed three sweat samples collected during physical activity, with Na+ concentrations within the typical range for human sweat (51 ± 4 mM, 39 ± 5 mM, and 46 ± 2 mM).

Advanced Li/Na–CO2 Batteries Enabled by the γ-MnO2 Catalyst with Enhanced Carbonate Decomposition

Xiaoyang Chen,Jian Chen,Yijie Liu,Yang Liu,Yun Gao,Siwei Fan,Xiangxi He,Xiaohao Liu,Chao Shen,Yong Jiang,Li Li,Yun Qiao,Shulei Chou

Metal–CO2 batteries, especially Li–CO2 and Na–CO2 batteries, are regarded as ideal new-generation energy storage systems owing to their high energy density and extraordinary CO2 capture capability. However, the advancement of metal–CO2 batteries is still at an early stage. The problems caused by accumulation of carbonates during charge–discharge cycles, such as large polarization and poor reversibility, restrict their practical application. Therefore, designing efficient catalysts is crucial for promoting the decomposition of carbonate to improve the electrochemical performance of metal–CO2 batteries. Herein, we first adopted sea urchin-like γ-MnO2 as the cathode material for Li/Na–CO2 batteries. Benefiting from the unique structure and excellent catalytic activity of γ-MnO2, the as-prepared Li–CO2 and Na–CO2 batteries can achieve low overpotentials of 1.28 and 1.36 V, respectively, at a current density of 100 mA g–1 with a cutoff capacity of 1000 mA h g–1. The overpotentials are lower than those of most of the state-of-the-art catalysts in previous reports. After 100 and 50 cycles of Li–CO2 and Na–CO2 batteries, respectively, their charging termination voltages remain at around 4.1 and 3.9 V, respectively; such a low charging platform indicates the excellent catalytic activity of the γ-MnO2 cathode on the discharge products. Our findings offer a promising guideline to design efficient electrocatalysts for high-performance metal–CO2 batteries.

Na-promoted Pt/Al2O3 activity stability for the complete oxidation of HCHO at room temperature

Feng Wang,GuoQin Qi,ChuanQi Zhang,HeCheng Ren,Hua Ma,Yu Guo

A series of Na-doped Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with 0.2 wt% of Pt loading and 0–6 wt% Na loading was prepared to investigate the HCHO complete oxidation at room temperature. Powder XRD, BET and XPS were used to characterize the bulk structure and texture of catalysts, as well as the ratio of hydroxyl oxygen to lattice oxygen. A long-term catalyst stability test (50 h on reaction stream) was conducted under severe conditions of a large space velocity of 180,000 mL/h/g, a high HCHO concentration of 80 ppm and dry conditions (relative humidity of 0%). An appropriate amount of doped-Na (2 wt%) contributed to a remarkable improvement of activity and stability of the Na-doped 0.2 wt% Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst.

Significant strengthening of a lithium disilicate glass by Li+/Na+ exchange at substantially lowered temperature

X.C. Li,D. Li,M. Meng,R. Wei,L. He,S.F. Zhang

A lithium disilicate (LD) glass with stoichiometric composition and glass transition temperature ( T g ) ∼ 470 °C was ion-exchanged over a wide temperature range below the T g . The ion-exchange temperatures used were 380 °C or 315 °C in a pure molten NaNO 3 bath, and 235 °C in a molten mixed salt bath of 50 mol% NaNO 3 +50 mol% KNO 3 . Temperature-dependences of surface layer morphology and mechanical behavior of the ion-exchanged glass were investigated. It was found that similar surface Na + concentrations were presented on the glass after the ion-exchange at all the three temperatures for different times. Surface failure occurred on the glass after the treatments at the two higher temperatures for longer time to increase the ion-exchanged depth. The surface failure could be completely avoid by substantially lowering the temperature to 235 °C in the mixed salt bath for much longer time to obtain a similar level of case depth. Similar strengthening effects were exhibited at the three temperatures as the ion-exchanged depth was shallower. With further increasing the depth, however, much more significantly strengthening effect could be achieved at the substantially lowered temperature. Flexural strength of the glass could be enhanced from ∼ 97 MPa to ∼ 520 MPa after the treatment at 235 °C for 128 h. The temperature-dependent effect to strengthen the LD glass by Li + /Na + exchange was attributed to the combined effect of stress relaxation during ion-exchange and thermal contraction coefficient mismatch between the ion-exchanged surface layer and the internal bulk glass.

Double-carbon coated Na3V2(PO4)3 as a superior cathode material for Na-ion batteries

Hong-bo Huang,Shao-hua Luo,Cai-ling Liu,Yue Yang,Yu-chun Zhai,Long-jiao Chang,Ming-qi Li

Na super ionic conductor (NASICON)-type Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) has been considered as a potential positive electrode material for sodium ion batteries (NIBs) owing to its high theoretical specific capacity. Nonetheless, the practical application of NVP is hindered by the intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. Herein, polydopamine-derived nitrogen-doped carbon-covered Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C composites (NVP/C/NC) have been prepared through a self-polymerization of dopamine on the NVP/C surface and subsequent calcination at high temperature. The as-synthesized NVP/C/NC composite cathode exhibits a high initial reversible capacity (109.2 mAh/g at 0.2C), superior rate performance (87.2 mAh/g at a rate up to 20C), and excellent cycling capability (91.2% of the initial capacity is kept after 500 cycles at 2C) in NIBs. Furthermore, compared with NVP/C electrode, the NVP/C/NC electrode presents low resistance and high sodium ions diffusion coefficient . The good performance can be ascribed to the nitrogen-doped carbon layer in improving the electronic conductivity, shortening diffusion length of Na + ions and electrons, and relieving the volume changes of electrode materials. These preliminary results suggest that the as-obtained NVP/C/NC composite is a novel promising electrode material for low-cost sodium energy storage.

Intrinsic conductivity optimization of bi-metallic nickel cobalt selenides toward superior-rate Na-ion storage

Chen Wu,Yuehua Wei,Qingwang Lian,Chao Cui,Weifeng Wei,Libao Chen,Chengchao Li

Enhancing the conductivity of electrode materials is critically important for improving the high-rate performance of Na-ion batteries (NIBs). Herein, we report a multifaceted strategy for optimizing the conductivity and electrochemical properties of nickel cobalt selenides via the combination of fine component regulation and C coating. The electrical conductivity of C@Ni0.33Co0.67Se2/C nanofiber (CNF) (Co0.67) hybrids achieved in this study was 0.3733 S mm−1, a conductivity five-fold higher than that of selenides with a Ni/Co ratio of 2 : 1. Coupled with desirable three-dimensional (3D) nanobrush morphology and the 1D conducting path of CNFs, the Co0.67 electrode achieved a superior rate performance of 413.1 mA h g−1, even at 2 A g−1. Furthermore, the Co0.67 electrode exhibited an impressive cycling performance of 499 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles (exhibiting an 89.5% capacity retention of the second cycle). Finally, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry analysis at different sweep rates were conducted to demonstrate the Co0.67 electrode's fast charge/ion transport ability and increased electrode kinetics.

Porous-Nickel-Scaffolded Tin–Antimony Anodes with Enhanced Electrochemical Properties for Li/Na-Ion Batteries

Jiachen Li,Jun Pu,Ziqiang Liu,Jian Wang,Wenlu Wu,Huigang Zhang,Haixia Ma

The energy and power densities of rechargeable batteries urgently need to be increased to meet the ever-increasing demands of consumer electronics and electric vehicles. Alloy anodes are among the most promising candidates for next-generation high-capacity battery materials. However, the high capacities of alloy anodes usually suffer from some serious difficulties related to the volume changes of active materials. Porous supports and nanostructured alloy materials have been explored to address these issues. However, these approaches seemingly increase the active material-based properties and actually decrease the electrode-based capacity because of the oversized pores and heavy mass of mechanical supports. In this study, we developed an ultralight porous nickel to scaffold with high-capacity SnSb alloy anodes. The porous-nickel-supported SnSb alloy demonstrates a high specific capacity and good cyclability for both Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. Its capacity retains 580 mA h g–1 at 2 A g–1 after 100 cycles in Li-ion batteries. For a Na-ion battery, the composite electrode can even deliver a capacity of 275 mA h g–1 at 1 A g–1 after 1000 cycles. This study demonstrates that combining the scaffolding function of ultralight porous nickel and the high capacity of the SnSb alloy can significantly enhance the electrochemical performances of Li/Na-ion batteries.

Tunable emission, energy transfer and charge compensation in Sr3(VO4)2:Sm3+,P5+,Na+ phosphor

Renping Cao,Dedong Peng,Haidong Xu,Shenhua Jiang,Ting Fu,Wenjie Luo,Zhiyang Luo

A series of Sr 3 (VO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ ,P 5+ ,Na + phosphors are synthesized by using solid-state reaction method in air. The strongest emission band peaking at ∼600   nm is assigned to the 4 G 5/2   →   6 H 7/2 transition of Sm 3+ ion, and the strong excitation peak at ∼402   nm due to 6 H 5/2   →   4 F 7/2 transition indicates that these phosphors can be excited by near ultraviolet light emitting diode chip. Energy transfer (ET) between VO 4 3− group and Sm 3+ ion can be observed. Sr 3 (VO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ phosphor with excitation 320   nm exhibits a systematically varied hues from green to yellow by changing Sm 3+ ion concentration from 0 to 6   mol%. The luminous mechanism of Sr 3 (VO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ phosphor is explained by using the energy level diagrams of VO 4 3− group and Sm 3+ ion. The luminescence properties of Sr 3 (VO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ phosphor can be improved and tuned by codoping the P 5+ and Na + ions due to ET and charge compensation. Lifetimes of Sr 2.925 Sm 0.05 (VO 4 ) 2 , Sr 2.925 Sm 0.05 (V 0.9 P 0.1 O 4 ) 2 , and Sr 2.9 Na 0.05 Sm 0.05 (V 0.9 P 0.1 O 4 ) 2 phosphors are 1.208, 1.219, and 0.796   ms, respectively. The experiment results are helpful to adjust the luminescence properties of Sm 3+ -doped other phosphors.
