Rapid mechanochemical synthesis of polyanionic cathode with improved electrochemical performance for Na-ion batteries

Shen Xing,Zhou Quan,Han Miao,Qi Xingguo,Li Bo,Zhang Qiangqiang,Zhao Junmei,Yang Chao,Liu Huizhou,Hu Yong-Sheng

Na-ion batteries have been considered promising candidates for stationary energy storage. However, their wide application is hindered by issues such as high cost and insufficient electrochemical performance, particularly for cathode materials. Here, we report a solvent-free mechanochemical protocol for the in-situ fabrication of sodium vanadium fluorophosphates. Benefiting from the nano-crystallization features and extra Na-storage sites achieved in the synthesis process, the as-prepared carbon-coated Na 3 (VOPO 4 ) 2 F nanocomposite exhibits capacity of 142 mAh g −1 at 0.1C, higher than its theoretical capacity (130 mAh g −1 ). Moreover, a scaled synthesis with 2 kg of product was conducted and 26650-prototype cells were demonstrated to proof the electrochemical performance. We expect our findings to mark an important step in the industrial application of sodium vanadium fluorophosphates for Na-ion batteries.

Study on the electrochemical process of Li+/Na+ mixed organic dual-cation battery system

Shimei Xu,Song Liu,Yanlin Zhou,Rengui Xiao,Xiang Ke

Organic materials have garnered significant attention due to abundant resources, recyclability, and ease of design. However, they are hampered in practical applications by poor conductivity and high solubility. Herein, a lithium metal battery is developed in this work, utilizing the cathode material polyanthraquinonyl sulfide (PAQS) doped with a trace of NaCl. Additionally, the ionic liquid lithium bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide and lithium metal as the anode. Physicochemical characterizations utilizing Raman spectroscopy and X-photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that both Na + and Li + migrate within the cell, forming a dual-cation battery. In addition, the battery displays exceptional rate performance with a capacity of 86 mAh·g −1 at 20 C, which is more than triples the capacity without NaCl, and has excellent cycling performance. Moreover, it retains 98 % capacity after 1000 cycles at 2 C with no significant degradation. This research offers an innovative strategy for developing a high-performance double-cation battery.

Na+-doped V2O5 as a high-performance cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Qi Sun,Jie Chen,Hui Zhou,Juntong Huang,Wentao Qian,Huiyong Yang,Qifa Wan,Zhi Chen,Xinyuan Peng

Na + doping via a one-step hydrothermal method partially substitutes V 5+ sites in V 2 O 5 , inducing lattice contraction and a morphological transformation into nanoparticles. • The optimized Na 2/3 VO cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 428.33 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and retains 82.4% of its initial capacity after 1500 cycles at 2 A g −1 . • Na + incorporation enhances structural stability, electrical conductivity, and Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics, providing a simple strategy for developing high-performance cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted considerable research interest in recent years due to their facile fabrication, environmental friendliness, inherent safety, and non-toxicity. Among various cathode candidates, V 2 O 5 stands out as a promising material owing to its layered structure that facilitates ion migration, high theoretical capacity, and multivalent redox capability. However, the practical application of V 2 O 5 is severely hindered by phase transitions during Zn 2+ intercalation/deintercalation, leading to poor cycling stability, along with inherently sluggish diffusion kinetics and low electronic conductivity. In response to these problems, Na + -doped V 2 O 5 was prepared via a hydrothermal method in this work. The results indicate that Na + doping effectively stabilized the crystal structure and enhanced the electrical conductivity of V 2 O 5 . Among the investigated compositions, the Na 0.328 V 2 O 5 electrode exhibited highly reversible Zn 2+ storage performance, delivering a specific capacity of 428.33 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , along with excellent long-term cycling stability, retaining 82.4% of its initial capacity after 1500 cycles at 2 A g −1 . This work provides a promising strategy for developing stable, high-capacity cathode materials for advanced AZIBs. The as-prepared Na 2/3 VO achieves high specific capacity, superior rate capability and long cycling stability, and its reversible Zn 2+ storage mechanism is clearly revealed. Mechanism of chlorine-mediated electrochemical remediation system for contaminated Cl-Na type coastal groundwater

Pengyu Liang,Xixuan Zou,Mandi Liu,Xinhua Xu,Shuchi Zhang,Dandan Ma,Donglei Wu

Groundwater is a critical component of water resources and plays a fundamental role in maintaining ecological stability and supporting economic development. Industrial activities constitute a major source of groundwater contamination. Controlling groundwater pollution in industrial production facilities has become a key priority in environmental management. In this study, we present a high-performance ex situ electrochemical remediation system designed to treat contaminated saline (Cl–Na type) groundwater from an operational coastal chemical park. The system, optimized with a Ti/RuO 2 –IrO 2 anode and Ni cathode, achieved complete removal of ammonium nitrogen (100%) and converted 79% of total nitrogen to harmless N 2 within 45 min at a current density of 5.0 mA cm −2 . Energy consumption was as low as 1.2 kWh·m −3 . Remediation efficacy was primarily driven by in situ–generated reactive chlorine species (RCS) (e.g., Cl•, Cl 2 • - , ClO•), whose formation was significantly enhanced by the presence of bicarbonate (HCO 3 − ). Notably, the system exhibited superior removal efficiency for persistent humic acid–like dissolved organic matter (DOM) compared with biodegradable protein-like DOM, resulting in a 71% reduction in overall fluorescence intensity. The system maintained robust performance across different real groundwater samples (energy consumption: 1.2-2.1 kWh·m −3 ) and demonstrated excellent electrode stability. These results demonstrate that the technology is an economically viable and effective approach for on-site remediation of contaminated groundwater in challenging coastal industrial environments.

Unblocking the Robust Na⁺ Charge Storage  Behavior on Pb Nanocrystals in Porous Carbon Framework

Xinyue Min,Xinli Huang,Jing Gao,Jinfeng Sun,Xiaohang Lin,Guangbin Duan,Chengxiang Wang,Zhiwei Zhang,Longwei Yin,Rutao Wang

Lead (Pb), with low average discharge plateau, large volumetric capacity, low cost (2000USD/MT) and high recycling rate (99%), is deemed as an optimal anode for sodium-ionbatteries/capacitors. However, several issues including short cycling life and poor ratecapability, stemming from amazing volume expansion (over 486%) and insulatingintermediates of Pb44- based “Zintl phases” during the sodiation, hinder the wide use of Pb.Herein, amorphous carbon coated discrete Pb nanocrystals (Pb@C) with highly porousstructure are prepared by sintering a compacted mixture composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone and lead citrate. This Pb@C nanocomposite achieves high levels of Na+storage with the robust rate capability and cycling stability. Furthermore, a sodium-ioncapacitor based on this Pb@C anode possesses the merits of high energy/power outputsand durable cycling life (> 12,000 cycles). The principal benefit arises from Pb-embeddedporous carbon structure with the functions of the increased electron connectivity, buffered2volume expansion and shortened Na+ diffusion path/barrier as confirmed by the theoreticalsimulations and in-situ/ex-situ structural analyses. Keywords: Sodium-ion capacitor; Pb anode; Alloying reaction; Na+ storage mechanism Composite

Electrochemical lithium extraction from high Na/Li brine using LiMn2O4-Zn mixed-ion battery

Ying Hu,Yanan Wei,Qian Zhang,Xinyu Xu,Wenmeihui Zhao,Rongmei Liu,Guixiang Qian,Zhongliang Tian,Xiangwan Lai,Chao Yang

The extraction of lithium from high Na/Li ratio salt lakes brine remains challenging due to the similar physicochemical properties of Li⁺ and Na⁺. In this work, a LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO)-Zn mixed-ion battery system was constructed for electrochemical lithium extraction from high Na/Li brine. The electrochemical behavior and lithium extraction performance of the system under different Na⁺ concentrations, temperatures, and current densities were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the LMO-Zn system maintained stable electrochemical performance in 0.1 M LiCl + 4.0 M NaCl electrolyte. At discharge rates from 0.1 C to 0.75 C, the discharge potential only slightly decreased from 2.03 V to 1.94 V, indicating favorable rate capability and electrode stability. The titanium felt current collector exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 124.3 mAh g⁻¹ and a charge capacity of 139.5 mAh g⁻¹ . ICP analysis revealed that the Li⁺ concentration in the ZnCl 2 solution increased from 0 to 2.75 mg L⁻¹ after electrochemical cycling, while the Li⁺ concentration in the Li/Na mixed solution decreased from 10 to 6.87 mg L⁻¹ , confirming effective lithium extraction and enrichment behavior. Furthermore, XRD, XPS, SEM, and GITT analyses demonstrated the good reversibility and structural stability of the LMO electrode during cycling. This work provides a promising strategy for lithium extraction from high Na/Li ratio salt lakes brine.

Intermolecular interactions optimization in weakly solvating ether solvents for wide-temperature Na metal batteries

He Mengjie,Liu Yunsen,Wang Zhiling,Fu Yongzhu,Tang Shuai

The development of wide-temperature-range batteries is essential for applications under extreme weather conditions and scientific endeavors such as deep-sea and space exploration. Sodium (Na) metal batteries offer the advantage of weak ion–solvent interactions, which promote easier desolvation at low temperatures compared with lithium batteries. Weakly solvating electrolytes can further decrease desolvation energy barriers, thereby enhancing electrochemical reversibility at low temperature. However, conventional weakly solvating solvents are highly volatile, posing safety concerns for high-temperature applications. Herein, we redesign the molecular structure of typical weakly solvating ethers to reinforce intermolecular interactions, thereby increasing their boiling points while preserving their low solvation characteristics. As a result, the Na metal batteries exhibit stable performance at current densities of at least 0.5 mA cm⁻ 2 across a wide temperature range from −40 to 70 °C. Moreover, the kinetic study highlights the previously overlooked yet critical role of solvent intermolecular interactions in influencing the desolvation barrier at low temperatures, in addition to ion–solvent interactions. Therefore, optimizing the intermolecular interactions of weakly solvating solvents is proposed to be a facile and promising strategy for achieving wide-temperature Na metal batteries.

Na+-doping induced synergistic oxygen vacancies and compressive strain for enhanced photocatalytic formaldehyde mineralization

Hening Zhao,Lingzhu Zhang,Dingren Ma,Yuyao Zhang,Jinfeng Chen,Chenqiang Yang,Haiying Yu

Na + doping in ZnWO 4 simultaneously introduces oxygen vacancies and compressive lattice strain. • The synergy injects electrons into W 5d orbitals, shifting the d-band center upward by 0.29 eV. • This optimized electronic structure enhances the adsorption and activation of both O 2 and HCHO. • The energy barrier for the rate-limiting formate oxidation step is significantly reduced. The efficiency of photocatalytic formaldehyde (HCHO) mineralization is often limited by insufficient adsorption and activation of O 2 and HCHO on conventional semiconductor surfaces. In this work, we demonstrate a ‘kill two birds with one stone’ strategy—Na + doping in ZnWO 4 —which simultaneously introduces oxygen vacancies and compressive lattice strain. This synergistic defect and strain engineering injects electrons into the W 5d orbitals, creating electron-rich W sites and shifting the d-band center upward. The resulting electronic structure enhances the adsorption and activation of both O 2 and HCHO, with adsorption energies reaching −2.08 eV and − 1.02 eV, respectively, significantly reducing the energy barrier of the rate-limiting formate oxidation step from −0.26 eV to −1.45 eV. Consequently, Na-ZnWO 4 achieves markedly improved reactive oxygen species generation, an 80.2% HCHO removal efficiency, and a high CO 2 yield under simulated solar light, greatly outperforming pristine ZnWO 4 . This work demonstrates a co-regulation strategy for defects and strain via cation doping as an effective route toward high-performance photocatalytic materials. Interface Reconstruction Reviving Dead Na Enables 3,800-Cycle Ah‑Level Anode‑Free Sodium Batteries

Han Wang,Jiaqi Huang,Liqiang Wu,Ruizhi Liu,Wenwei Zhang,Weihao Wang,Siqi Lyu,Wenrui Huang,Shuai Dong,Dandan Yu,Renheng Wang,Bin Zhou,Daojun Yang,Weili Song,Rui Wen,Hua Wang

The accumulation of inactivated or ‘dead’ Na is the primary cause of rapid capacity decay in anode-free sodium batteries (AFSBs). These dead Na is typically encapsulated by a passivated solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which renders it electrochemically inactive. Current strategies have primarily focused on suppressing dead Na formation, yet its reactivation has rarely been explored. Here, we reactivate dead Na by electrochemically reconstructing the interface through a tailored overdischarge method, thereby recovering the lost capacity and extending cycle life. Specifically, this reactivation process selectively dissolves the passivating SEI surrounding dead Na to restore its activity, while simultaneously rebuilding a thin, homogeneous, and NaF‑rich interphase that ensures subsequent stable cycling. Collectively, by periodically using the method, an Ah-level anode-free pouch cell realizes 3,800 cycles at 2C with 83.5% capacity retention, representing a 343% enhancement over the best cyclability in the previous report. Besides, a practical 5 Ah anode-free pouch cell (181.1 Wh kg −1 ) also exhibits stable cycling over 2,500 cycles with 93.7% capacity retention, comparable to the performance of commercial LiFePO 4 batteries, demonstrating great application potential. Moreover, with proven effectiveness across diverse electrolytes and cathodes, this dead Na reactivation method offers a universal and effective pathway toward practical realization of AFSBs.

Structure and further fragmentation of significant [a3 + Na − H]+ ions from sodium-cationized peptides

Huixin Wang,Bing Wang,Zhonglin Wei,Hao Zhang,Xinhua Guo

A good understanding of gas-phase fragmentation chemistry of peptides is important for accurate protein identification. Additional product ions obtained by sodiated peptides can provide useful sequence information supplementary to protonated peptides and improve protein identification. In this work, we first demonstrate that the sodiated a 3 ions are abundant in the tandem mass spectra of sodium-cationized peptides although observations of a 3 ions have rarely been reported in protonated peptides. Quantum chemical calculations combined with tandem mass spectrometry are used to investigate this phenomenon by using a model tetrapeptide GGAG. Our results reveal that the most stable [a 3 + Na − H] + ion is present as a bidentate linear structure in which the sodium cation coordinates to the two backbone carbonyl oxygen atoms. Due to structural inflexibility, further fragmentation of the [a 3 + Na − H] + ion needs to overcome several relatively high energetic barriers to form [b 2 + Na − H] + ion with a diketopiperazine structure. As a result, low abundance of [b 2 + Na − H] + ion is detected at relatively high collision energy. In addition, our computational data also indicate that the common oxazolone pathway to generate [b 2 + Na − H] + from the [a 3 + Na − H] + ion is unlikely. The present work provides a mechanistic insight into how a sodium ion affects the fragmentation behaviors of peptides. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Improving the adsorption kinetics of Li1.6Mn1.6O4-type adsorbents via synergistic Na and S doping

Zhangfa Yu,Panmin Yang,Chunxi Hai,Xuequn Li,Hongbo Sun,Yuan Zhou,Longgang Li,Xudong Yu,Wanghai He,Ying Zeng

Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 -type adsorbents show significant promise for lithium resource extraction from complex saline lakes due to their exceptional selectivity and high theoretical adsorption capacity of 72.3 mg g −1 . However, their practical application is markedly constrained by rapid manganese dissolution during elution with dilute HCl, primarily attributed to Jahn-Teller effect-induced Mn O structural distortion. To address this limitation, a synergistic S 2− /Na + co-doping strategy was employed: Na + stabilizes the spinel structure via Na O bond formation, while S 2− doping enhances charge density. In situ XRD analysis elucidated the structural evolution of the doped material. Experimental results demonstrate that H 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 modified with 1 % Na 2 S achieves an adsorption capacity of 39.6 mg g −1 in 300 ppm LiOH solution, with manganese dissolution loss below 2 %, and attains a single-pass lithium extraction efficiency of 99.5 % from oilfield brine containing 100 ppm Li + . Furthermore, the influence of Na + concentration on Li + adsorption selectivity was investigated for the first time, and the underlying mechanism was summarized. This finding is highly significant for efficient lithium extraction from various brines.

Na/N doped carbon dot nanozymes with enhanced peroxidase activity for antimicrobial food preservation

Dangfeng Wang,Yifan Hou,Likun Ren,Yang Jiang,Yuqiong Meng,Rui Ma,Shulin Wang,Zhiteng Liu,Xuepeng Li,Fangchao Cui,Tingting Li,Jianrong Li

Annually, up to 25 % of food globally spoils due to microbial pollution. Traditional antibacterial nanomaterials had issues like high dosage, lacked of catalytic activity, and instability. Therefore, Na/N-doping carbon dots nanozymes (Na/N-CDs nanozymes) was developed to fight spoilage organisms. The structural stability of Na/N-CDs nanozymes was enhanced due to the change of lattice structure. Na/N-doping with the peroxidase-mimetic activity was 4.3 times higher than reported HRP activity. It showed strong antimicrobial activity by catalyzing H₂O₂ into ROS, with a MIC of 0.03 mg·mL −1 . And the catalytic activity was over 32 times higher than precursor substances. In contrast, Fe and Cu-doping CDs with a MIC of 0.5 mg·mL −1 had no nanozyme activity. The results of antibacterial and spoilage assays showed that Na/N-CDs nanozymes antibacteria by damaging cell membranes, degrading DNA, and inhibiting key enzymes, thereby extending the shelf life of salmon fillets by 3 days, indicating potential in aquatic product preservation.
