Highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have always been the key factors to affect the performance of zinc–air batteries. However, integrating the independent reaction sites of ORR and OER in a catalyst remains a major challenge. Herein, a collaborative strategy based on defect induction and doping is proposed to prepare the strain-regulated Pt–NiO@Ni sub-micron particles (Pt–NiO@Ni SP). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of tensile strain and Pt-doped, the metallic Ni-based sub-micron particles with tensile strain as the catalyst carriers can effectively optimize the electronic distribution of atomic structures in Pt and NiO on the surface of particles, leading to reduce the energy barrier of intermediates for ORR and OER. Consequently, the Pt–NiO@Ni SP exhibits outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity with the ΔE index of 0.65 V under a low Pt loading, outperforming that of the benchmark Pt/C+IrO 2 catalysts (0.76 V). Impressively, the Pt–NiO@Ni SP-based liquid zinc–air battery develops a high open-circuit potential (1.47 V), excellent energy density (188.2 mW cm −2 ), and favorable cyclic charge–discharge cycling durability (200 h at 20 mA cm −2 ). This work provides an innovative avenue for the rational construction of highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Nonradical activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) is promising for wastewater decontamination but suffers from insufficient decomposition efficiency toward organics. Herein, NiO nanospheres with hollow multi-shelled structure (HoMS) and tunable shell numbers are designed as a nanoreactor of PDS activation to enhance the decomposition efficiency. Study on bis-phenol A (BPA) degradation reveals that 3-shelled NiO HoMS exhibits enhanced kinetic rate (0.08 min 1 ) and mineralization degree (79.2%) compared to 2-shelled NiO HoMS (0.04 min −1 , 50%) and NiO nanoparticles (0.01 min −1 , 29.8%). The degradation of BPA over NiO HoMS follows electron transfer regime with oxygen vacancy ( V O ) acted as the active site. The hollow multi-shelled structure not only increases the accessibility of V O but also enriches local concentration of reactants in the void spaces due to the nanoconfinement effect, and thus mainly contributes to the enhanced catalytic efficiency. This work provides a distinct case for developing efficient nonradical oxidation technique for water purification .

Today, industrial ammonia synthesis mainly depends on the Haber–Bosch process, which causes a lot of energy consumption and huge CO2 emissions. The electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is considered a more sustainable and environmentally benign alternative to produce ammonia, but it requires an efficient catalyst to overcome the difficulty of N2 activation. In this work, we reported that MOF-derived C@NiO@Ni microtubes behaved as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. This electrocatalyst achieved a high NH3 yield of 43.15 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 and faradaic efficiency of 10.9% at −0.7 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode. The experimental results indicated that the excellent NRR performance originated from the oxygen vacancies in NiO. Moreover, the abundant NiO/Ni interfaces were conducive to proton adsorption and further enhanced the NRR performance.

Currently, although some progress has already been achieved, the complex and high-cost synthetic route, and low electrochemical properties of supercapacitor still restrict its practical application. Here, NiMoO 4 /NiO nanoflowers material with a high specific surface area grown on a nickel foam conductive substrate is successfully synthesized via a facile and efficient method, which exhibits an excellent capacitance of 10.3 F cm −2 (1982.3 F g −1 ), a good rate capability, and a remarkable cycling stability (capacity remain 98.6% after 3000 cycles). In addition, a novel asymmetric supercapacitor with excellent energy density is also fabricated via the NiMoO 4 /NiO nanoflowers as the positive electrode and a piece of active carbon as the negative electrode in 3 M KOH electrolyte. The optimized asymmetric device operating at 1.7 V also offers a high energy density and an outstanding long-term cycling stability. These impressive results suggest that such NiMoO 4 /NiO nanoflowers can pave the way for designing and developing next-generation high-performance storage systems.

Nickel oxide/graphene oxide (NiO/GO) nanocomposite was prepared by a hydrothermal method combining a subsequent calcination process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometer (Raman), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods were used for the characterization of nanocomposite. Removal of aromatic heterocyclic dye methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution using adsorption and photodegradation activity of NiO/GO nanocomposite was investigated. The effects of NiO/GO nanocomposite dose, pH, and contact time on the removal efficiency of MB were also investigated. Compared with that in the dark, NiO/GO nanocomposite shows a faster and higher removal efficiency by the photodegradation and adsorption under visible light irradiation . A remarkable removal efficiency of MB achieved 97.54% by NiO/GO nanocomposite after 2 h. It could be concluded that synergy of photodegradation and adsorption has a significant progress for removal of MB under visible light compared with that of only adsorption without light.

Thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) typically requires high temperatures and activation energy, but the introduction of combustion catalysts will improve its thermal decomposition performance. Therefore, it is crucial to rationally design combustion catalysts for enhancing the thermal decomposition performance of AP. Herein, 3D NiO nanoflowers@2D graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets (NiO@x%CN, x = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) composite catalysts were constructed by solvothermal and calcination methods, and characterized by a series of analyses. NiO@5%CN displayed the best ability to catalyze the thermal decomposition of AP, which reduced the high decomposition temperature of AP by 113.8 °C and the activation energy by 21.67 kJ mol −1 . The combustion rate of NiO@5%CN-CSP has increased by 118 % compared to that of composite solid propellants. This work provides a new insight for the design of NiO-based high-efficiency combustion catalysts.

The research of a robust catalytic system based on single NiOx electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a huge challenge. Particularly, the factors that dominate the catalytic properties of NiOx-based hybrids for HER have not been clearly demonstrated. Herein, a convenient protocol for the fabrication of NiOx@bamboo-like carbon nanotube hybrids (NiOx@BCNTs) is designed. The hybrids exhibit superb catalytic ability and considerable durability in alkaline solution. A benchmark HER current density of 10 mA cm–2 has been achieved at an overpotential of ∼79 mV. In combination with the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this for the first time definitely validates that the inherent high Ni0 ratio and the Ni0 on the interface of Ni/NiO play a vital role in the outstanding catalytic performance. Especially, the Ni0 on the interface of Ni/NiO performs superior activity for water splitting compared with that of bulk Ni0. These conclusions provide guidance for the rational design of the future non-noble metallic catalysts.

Porous hollow nanospheres (or spherical shells) made of NiO nanosheets are synthesized and tested for the electrochemical performance of the electrodes made of these materials for supercapacitors. Preparation of the NiO sheet hollow spheres starts with synthesis of polystyrene nanospheres with carboxyl groups (CPS), followed by a two-step activation procedure and the subsequent nucleation and growth by electroless deposition of Ni on the CPS core to obtain CPS@Ni core–shell nanoparticles. The CPS core is eliminated and metallic Ni nanoshell is converted into NiO by calcinations at high temperatures. The material properties of as-prepared hollow NiO nanospheres are characterized by TEM, XRD and N 2 -absorption measurements. The electrochemical characteristics of the electrodes made of these nanostructured NiO materials are determined by the CV and galvanostatic measurements. These electrochemical tests indicate that electrodes made of the NiO nanosheet hollow spheres exhibit an improved reversible capacitance of 600 F g −1 after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g −1 . It is believed that the good electrochemical performance of these electrodes is attributed to the improved OH − transport in the porous network structures associated with the hollow spheres of randomly oriented NiO nanosheets.

Glycerol has a very high value of onset potential on the Au/C electrode, so it is difficult to be electrochemically oxidized on the pure Au electrocatalyst. When Co 3 O 4 , NiO, Mn 3 O 4 and MgO are added to the Au/C, the values of onset potential of glycerol oxidation shift negatively 171, 191, 156 and 215 mV than that on the Au/C. Au–Co 3 O 4 (wt 4:1)/C, Au–NiO(wt 5:1)/C, Au–Mn 3 O 4 (wt 5:1)/C and Au–MgO(wt 2:1)/C show the highest activity for glycerol electrooxidation for respective oxide promoted Au/C. The addition of oxides to the Au/C obviously promotes the catalytic activity and stability for glycerol electrooxidation.

Poly(aniline- co - m -aminophenol)(PANMA)/graphene/NiO nanocomposite was synthesized and applied as a supercapacitor electrode for the first time. Graphene/NiO nanocomposite was first synthesized via a hydrothermal synthesis method from Ni(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O, urea, and graphite oxide. NiO nanoparticles were distributed uniformly on both sides of the graphene. Then, PANMA was deposited in situ on the surface of the graphene/NiO nanocomposite via the copolymerization of aniline and m -aminophenol. The obtained nanocomposite has a similar porous morphology with that of PANMA. Experimental results indicate that the synergistic contributions from PANMA, graphene and NiO enable the composite electrode with substantially improved energy storage performance metrics. The nanocomposite shows a high specific capacitance of 562 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , a good rate capability even at high current densities and a better long-term cycling stability.

NiO possesses a high theoretical capacity, but its poor conductivity and significant volume changes during the redox process lead to severe electrochemical performance degradation, limiting its applications. In this study, flower-like structure NiO@C composite materials were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The particle size of the material is approximately 10–16 μm, with a well-defined morphology of carbon material composite. Al-NiO@C batteries were constructed using NiO@C cathode and subjected to electrochemical performance testing. The initial discharge capacity of NiO@C composite material at a current density of 200 mA g −1 is 126 mA h/g, and even after 150 cycles, it retains a discharge specific capacity of 54 mA h/g. In contrast, the pure NiO exhibits an initial capacity of only 49 mA h/g, which decreases to 23 mA h/g after 150 cycles. The cycling stability of NiO@C material is significantly better than that of NiO alone. This improvement is attributed to the enhanced conductivity of NiO material by the addition of carbon material, which provides improved electron/ion transport properties. Additionally, the inclusion of carbon material helps alleviate the volume changes of NiO during the reaction process, thereby enhancing the overall electrochemical performance of Al-NiO batteries.

With the rapid advancement of electrochromic technology, providing quasi-solid-state electrolytes that offer superior performance and lower costs holds significant promise for practical applications of electrochromic devices. Herein, a strategy of employing a facile fabrication method for quasi-solid electrolyte and quasi-solid-state electrochromic devices by in-situ UV curing, aims to enhance interfacial interactions, thereby accelerating response time and improving cycling stability. After 120 s of UV polymerization, the electrolyte with PEO accounting for 40 wt% of PEGDA and PEO mixture exhibited excellent conductivity (2.04 × 10 −3 S cm −1 ), thermal stability, optical transmittance (>85 % @633 nm) and interface bonding strength (0.11 Mpa). These remarkable characteristics lay the foundation for fabricating a quasi-solid-state WO 3 –NiO ECD with an ultra-fast response time of 0.96 s/3.48 s and excellent long-term cycling stability of more than 20000 cycles. This outcome introduces a novel approach to fabricating high-performance electrochromic devices, significantly enhancing their potential applications across various fields.
