Copper-based photocatalysts have attracted much attention because of their great prospects in photochemical conversion. However, the preparation of highly stable copper-based photocatalysts is a challenge. In this study, copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) wrapped in graphitized polyacrylonitrile (g-PAN) were prepared by a two-step sintering method. Even if Cu@g-PAN is placed in the air for one month, the Cu NPs were still not oxidized. Furthermore, we succeeded in further introducing graphitized carbon nitride (g-C3N4) into the g-PAN shell structure, which was confirmed using a Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM), FT-IR, and UV-Vis absorption spectra. Cu@g-PAN/g-C3N4 can degrade 88.61% of methylene blue (MB) in one hour, showing a higher catalytic activity than Ag@g-PAN/g-C3N4 (55.18%). XPS and Auger electron spectroscopy tests of catalyzed Cu@g-PAN/g-C3N4 show that Cu is not oxidized. We have proposed a possible mechanism for charge separation and transformation in the Cu@g-PAN/g-C3N4 composites to explain the enhanced photocatalytic performance. This work provides a new method to protect Cu NPs and demonstrates the prospect of rational design of copper-based photocatalysts with high stability and efficiency.

PANAM loaded with ZIF-8 and CV was successfully synthesized. • PANAM@ZIF-8@CV were mixed with crosslinked PVA to prepare the composite pad. • The triple synergistic effect realized long-term sustained release of CV. • PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA presented excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties. • The PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA composite can realize the long-term blueberry preservation. To achieve long-term sustained release of active antibacterial substances and prolong food shelf life, polyacrylonitrile microspheres (PANAM) loaded with ZIF-8 and carvacrol (CV) were fabricated and then blended with crosslinked PVA matrix to prepare a composite pad (PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA). SEM, XPS and XRD results showed ZIF-8 and CV were successfully immobilized in PANAM's porous structure, which effectively enriched active sites and realized efficient anchoring of CV. The triple synergy of ZIF-8, PANAM and polymer matrix enables long-term CV release. Compared with other PVA composite pads containing the same CV content, PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA presented a superior long-term slow-release effect and thus exhibited excellent antioxidant and long-lasting antibacterial properties after 30 days of storage. During 15-day blueberry storage, this composite pad reduced respiratory intensity and weight loss while preserving firmness and nutrients. Thus, blueberries retained intact morphology and fresh taste, demonstrating great potential of PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA in long-term blueberry preservation. Nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) is an ideal material for treating chromium (VI). However, the NZVI's low loading and corrosion susceptibility in acidic Cr-containing industrial wastewater is the most pressing issue. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a method to construct novel NZVI composites with high loading, corrosion resistance, and outstanding activity. In this study, green 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) was employed for the first time as a corrosion inhibitor for NZVI to form a protective coating through chemisorption, thus blocking the corrosion of NZVI by reaction medium. Meanwhile, a novel multiphase green crystallization-assisted pore formation freeze-drying method was constructed to synthesize UiO-66-NH 2 regulated 3D network porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) cryogel film for stabilizing NZVI, which is intended to remove Cr(VI) effectively and without secondary contamination. The synthesized MBI-Fe 0 @MOF/PAN possessed prominent activity, corrosion resistance, and considerable NZVI loading (45.9 mg/g). The Cr(VI) removal could still reach 82.7 % after 6 cycles, and the level of total dissolved iron ions was lowered to 0.255 mg/L. MBI-Fe 0 @MOF/PAN for rapid removal of Cr(VI) may be ascribed to the synergistic reaction of rapid protonation of MBI and strong reduction of NZVI. This study constructed the MBI corrosion-resistant interface and 3D PAN cryogel film concepts not only to broaden the horizons of designing efficient NZVI catalytic materials but also to promote the development of treatment technologies for acidic Cr-containing industrial wastewater.

Faced with the presence of radiation sources in many different areas, researchers are beginning to focus on the development of personal protective equipment. The design and manufacture of lightweight, lead-free, and flexible X-ray shielding materials have recently become a challenge in materials science, whereas, high-Z materials, which are essential raw materials for high-performance X-ray protective fillers, are non-renewable, and their exploitation and utilization usually require long-term planning. In this study, a new route is demonstrated to the preparation of multifunctional polymer/high-Z material nanofibrous membrane through electrospinning and subsequent solvothermal processes. The resultant Bi 2 WO 6 /WO 3 /polyacrylonitrile hybrid nanofibrous membrane possesses a remarkable X-ray attenuating property with an attenuation rate of 90.10% at 30 keV and a mass attenuation coefficient of 2.97 cm 2 g −1 at 83 keV. In addition, the freestanding hybrid nanofibrous membrane also possesses excellent photocatalytic activities for the degrading of cationic water pollutants, showing promising potential in industrial wastewater treatment, and providing a new strategy for the design and applications of multifunctional and recyclable shielding materials.

The agglomeration of nanoscale carbon-based material with excellent large specific surface area and numerous active sites remains a challenging, which decreases the adsorption efficiency. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) half-embedded architecture adsorbent membrane (ES-PAN/AHCNs) was designed to address this weakness by combining the small-sized activated hollow carbon nanospheres (AHCNs) with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber. The 3D architecture precludes the agglomeration of AHCNs, while the half-embedded of AHCNs ensures structural stability of fiber adsorbents. The adsorption capacity and mechanism of ES-PAN/AHCNs membrane were investigated by using metal ions (Pb(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Cr(Ⅲ)). Concretely, the adsorption capacity of ES-PAN/AHCNs membrane to Pb(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) were 192, 186 and 179 mg g −1 , respectively, which was more than two times than that of AHCNs. Noticeably, the significant increase of adsorption capacity mainly benefits from the 3D half-embedded architecture, owing to that pure PAN fiber has negligible adsorption capacity. Moreover, the adsorption capability of ES-PAN/AHCNs membrane retained 82.1% after twelve adsorption-desorption cycles. The strategy of fabricating 3D half-embedded adsorbent membrane substantially expands the potential for AHCNs applications in the adsorption and water purification fields.

Nowadays, the functional carbonaceous nanospheres (CNS) originated from the simple one-pot hydrothermal carbonization reaction of the renewable biomass are getting much attention, attributing to the facile, low-cost and eco-friendly preparation method. However, the applications of the CNS suffer from many restrictions due to the difficulty of recovery from aqueous phase. Herein, we presented an easy, cost-effective and sustainable synthesis avenue to prepare a novel PAN/CNS nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) with plentiful carboxyl groups for effective adsorption of La 3+ ions through the fine combination of hydrothermal carbonization, electrospinning and alkaline activation treatment process. The resulting carboxylate rich PAN/CNS NFMs with ultrahigh CNS loading (up to 70 wt%) displayed good flexibility and excellent adsorption quantity towards La 3+ ions. The adsorption data preferred to follow the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, and the maximum adsorption amount of La 3+ ions calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was up to 174.5 mg/g. Furthermore, the adsorption thermodynamics was also explored and the results revealed that the adsorption of La 3+ ions on the activated PAN/CNS-70 NFMs was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Meanwhile, the activated PAN/CNS-70 NFMs exhibited good reusability and the adsorption efficiency still maintained at about 90% after three recycling tests. Noticeably, this work may offer a new strategy to construct a cost-effective and environmentally friendly nanofibrous adsorbent for high efficient recovery of La 3+ ions.

This study aims to develop a new strategy to fabricate nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high removal efficiency for heavy metal ions in wide acidic pH range. Unlike conventional polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based thin film composite (TFC) membranes that requires multiple coating steps, the new NF membrane was fabricated through direct interfacial polymerization with positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) on PAN substrates blended with sulfonated polyarylene ether benzonitrile (SPEB). The unique surface migration effect of SPEB led to a smoother, more hydrophilic surface and sponge-like structure of the substrate. Such a modified structure was found to be crucial to achieve smaller pore size as well as better adhesion of the selective layer and the substrate of the modified TFC membrane. The resultant NF membrane has a reasonably high pure water permeability of 7.62 ± 0.81 LMH·bar −1 , and a molecular weight cut-off of 300 Da. It achieved a reasonably high rejection towards heavy metal cations such as Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ over 93.0% in a wide acidic pH range. This work may provide insightful guidelines for upgrading current NF membranes for heavy metal removals in harsh acidic environments.

Both multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and electrospun nanofibers are ideal nanomaterial candidates with great potential in the field of heavy metal ions remediation. In the present study, the advantages of these two nanomaterials were combined with electrospinning method to prepare a novel nanocomposite membrane (NCM) containing improved physical properties and enhanced removal efficiency for metal ions. Modified MWCNTs were initially fabricated by reacting MWCNT-COOH with polyethylenimine (PEI), which was further embedded within polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers through electrospinning. The structure, morphology and physical property of prepared MWCNT-PEI and NCM (MWCNT-PEI/PAN) were carefully characterized with FTIR, SEM, TEM, mechanical test and contact angle measurements. Compared with plain PAN membrane, the prepared NCM possesses higher mechanical strength and improved hydrophilicity, resulting in high permeation and filtration efficiency. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that MWCNT-PEI/PAN nanocomposite membrane exhibited higher adsorption amount for Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ ions compared with other nanocomposite membranes. Additionally, the adsorption processes were elaborated to follow pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm, indicating the PEI groups embedded in the NCM was the main adsorption active site and chemisorption was the mainly mechanism for the uptake of heavy metal ions. The dynamic adsorption results proved that the designed NCM exhibited improved rejection ability to metal ions with a water flux at 145.8 L m −2 h −1 under 0.2 bar pressure. The NCM could treat 240 mL and 170 mL of 40 mg/L Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ solution while maintaining a drinking water standard of 1 mg/L and 10 µg/L, respectively. The improved membrane performance along with the excellent heavy metal removal efficiency suggests that this novel prepared NCM possess promising potential for heavy metal contaminated water treatment through the process of membrane adsorption.

PAN–COOH fibers were prepared with PAN fibers and used as templates, carbon source and nitrogen source for the first time to prepare carbon- and nitrogen-doped TiO 2 /carbon (C, N–TiO 2 ) composite fibers. The C, N–TiO 2 composite fibers were characterized by TEM, SEM, XPS, XRD, IR, Raman and UV–Vis spectrum. The composite fibers exhibited strong photocatalytic activity in photodegradation of Rh B solution under UV–Vis light. Doping C and N into TiO 2 materials could reduce the band gap width of TiO 2 and expand the light absorption range. The carbon fiber inside the composite fiber promoted the transfer of photoelectrons and inhibited the combination of photogenerated electrons and holes. The large specific surface area of C, N–TiO 2 composite fibers was also conducive to the photocatalytic activity. The macroscale C, N–TiO 2 composite fibers were easy for recycling. Therefore, the C, N–TiO 2 composite fibers had the potential for dealing with organic pollutants in water.

Background: Nephrotic syndrome has a significant impact on global health, often leading to cardiovascular disease and high mortality due to limited effective treatments. This study investigates the efficacy of Shensu IV in a puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN)-induced rat model of nephropathy. Methods: Rat models and in vitro podocyte PAN nephropathy models were established with PAN and treated with Shensu IV. Renal function was evaluated by measuring urine output and protein content, while hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and oxidative stress markers were quantified in serum and podocyte lysates. We conducted histological examination on kidney tissues and analyzed molecular markers (CD2AP, nephrin, and PI3K/AKT pathway) using RT-qPCR and Western blot. Results: Shensu IV significantly improved urine output and proteinuria, and attenuated glomerular damage, fibrosis, and mitochondrial swelling in PAN-treated rats. Mechanistically, Shensu IV enhanced endogenous H2S production, reducing oxidative stress and activating the PI3K/AKT pathway in vivo and in vitro. This facilitated the upregulation of the target genes CD2AP and nephrin, which are critical for maintaining glomerular integrity and improving renal function in PAN nephropathy models. Conclusion: Shensu IV and NaHS confer renal protection primarily by modulating oxidative stress and restoring the integrity of the glomerular filtration barrier through mechanisms involving the enhancement of the PI3K/AKT pathway and modulation of H2S levels. These findings suggest a promising therapeutic potential for these metabolites in the treatment of nephrotic syndrome.

The boric acid modification offers an effective approach to improve the radial homogeneity and mechanical performance of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers by affecting stabilization behavior. However, the mechanism of how boron affects the stabilization process remains unclear. Herein, the impact of boron on the cyclization and oxidation reactions is investigated through experimental data and computational calculations. The results reveal that boron oxide exhibits a stronger electron-withdrawing effect on cyano nitrogen compared to hydroxyl oxygen, effectively inhibiting both ionic and free radical cyclization reactions, as well as subsequent oxidation reactions in the skin regions. This inhibitory effect enhances the cross-sectional oxygen uptake and stabilization. The boric acid also improves the preferred orientation in precursor fibers by reducing the polarity of cyano groups and promotes the inheritance of structural characteristics from precursor fibers through “cross-linking” effect. Consequently, the structural characteristics and mechanical properties of modified carbon fibers are significantly improved. These findings could provide fundamental insights into the mechanisms of thermal reaction regulation and microstructure evolution in the preparation of high-performance PAN-based carbon fibers.

Silicon anodes are promising for use in lithium-ion batteries. However, their practical application is severely limited by their large volume expansion leading to irreversible material fracture and electrical disconnects. This study proposes a new top-down strategy for preparing microsize porous silicon and introduces polyacrylonitrile (PAN) for a nitrogen-doped carbon coating, which is designed to maintain the internal pore volume and lower the expansion of the anode during lithiation and delithiation. We then explore the effect of temperature on the evolution of the structure of PAN and the electrochemical behavior of the composite electrode. After treatment at 400 -, the PAN coating retains a high nitrogen content of 11.35%, confirming the presence of C―N and C―O bonds that improve the ionic-electronic transport properties. This treatment not only results in a more intact carbon layer structure, but also introduces carbon defects, and produces a material that has remarkable stable cycling even at high rates. When cycled at 4 A g −1 , the anode had a specific capacity of 857.6 mAh g −1 even after 200 cycles, demonstrating great potential for high-capacity energy storage applications.
