Preparing wound dressing with dual-delivery of antioxidant and antibacterial agents is highly desirable in clinical wound treatment. Herein, a series of coaxial nanofiber membranes loaded with antioxidant tea polyphenols (TP) in the core and antibacterial ε-poly (L-lysine) (ε-PL) in the shell layer were successfully fabricated by coaxial electrospinning. The physicochemical characterizations by transmission electron microscopy , inverted fluorescence microscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the formation of core-shell structure. The results of in vitro drug release indicated that ε-PL exhibited a fast release profile while TP released in a sustained manner, which is favorable to the achievement of quick bacteria inhibition in the initial phase as well as long-term antioxidant activity during wound healing. The antioxidant activity of coaxial nanofibers was found to be increased with the increment of TP content and incubation time . The antibacterial assays against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated that the incorporation of ε-PL in the coaxial nanofibers led to strong antibacterial activity . Additionally, all the coaxial nanofibers possessed good cytocompatibility. Therefore, the prepared coaxial nanofibers simultaneously incorporated with ε-PL and TP are promising as potential wound dressing materials.

Cranial periosteum defects are frequently accompanied by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and insufficient regenerative capacity, posing significant clinical challenges. In this study, a Janus nano-bioactive glass (nBG)-loaded PPDO/PCL bilayer electrospun fibrous membrane was designed to simultaneously achieve directional fluid transport and osteogenic regeneration. The asymmetric hydrophilic/hydrophobic architecture enabled unidirectional liquid management, with the hydrophobic layer exhibiting a water contact angle of 145° and the hydrophilic layer showing rapid wetting within 0.8 s. The membrane demonstrated suitable mechanical flexibility, with a tensile strength of 3–4 MPa, meeting periosteal repair requirements. In vitro assays revealed excellent cytocompatibility, with cell viability exceeding 100% over 5 days. Notably, the PPDO/BG-PCL group promoted cell proliferation above 110% on days 3 and 5 and showed negligible hemolysis. nBG enhanced osteogenic differentiation, as evidenced by increased ALP activity at 7 and 14 days and dense calcium nodule formation at 28 days. Moreover, apatite-like hydroxyapatite uniformly covered the fiber surface after 28 days of mineralization. Collectively, this Janus PPDO/BG-PCL membrane integrates effective CSF leakage prevention with sustained bioactive stimulation, representing a promising scaffold for cranial periosteum repair.

Bioactive ceramics are ideal materials for bone substitutes owing to their excellent osteoconductivity, but the application in load-bearing conditions is limited by their intrinsic brittleness. Inspired by the interpenetrating organic-inorganic structure of natural bone, we developed ceramic/polymer interpenetrating phase composites (C/P-IPCs) by vacuum-assisted microporous infiltration of polycaprolactone (PCL) molten into the interconnected micropores in vat photopolymerization printed β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) samples. The C/P-IPCs achieved a synergy of mechanical properties and bioactivity compared with the pure ceramic β-TCP and the conventional ceramic particle-reinforced polymer (CPR-P) from the same materials. Specifically, the composites exhibited dramatically enhanced mechanical properties over pure ceramic, with strength increases of approximately 2.1- to 2.4-fold and strain energy density improvements of 2.4- to 5.5- fold. Meanwhile, the C/P-IPCs demonstrated a moderate degradation rate and superior mechanical stability during degradation. Furthermore, their biological performance of C/P-IPCs was markedly superior to that of CPR-P, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and bone repair. These results indicate that the C/P-IPCs are a promising candidate for bone repair under load-bearing conditions.

The quest for ever-growing energy density of lithium-ion batteries dictates urgent concerns about their thermal safety. Phase change materials (PCMs) are considered promising for battery thermal management, yet their extensive application is restricted by inherent limitations such as leakage risk, low thermal conductivity, and flammability. Here, we fabricate a multilayered PCL@PEG/Al₂O₃-ADP (CEAD) composite film through strategy of coaxial electrospinning and dip-coating. Benefiting from the effective PEG encapsulation, thermally conductive Al₂O₃ fillers, and an ADP coating for flame retardancy, the composite film demonstrates excellent shape stability with no leakage even after 12 h of continuous exposure at 50 °C, high phase change enthalpy, improved thermal conductivity, and self-extinguishing behavior. Its notable foldability also ensures facile installation. When wrapped around a lithium-ion battery, the film maintains the battery temperature below 45 °C under a 5C discharge rate, which is 13 °C lower compared to the bare one. Thus, the composite film provides simultaneous efficient thermal management and flame retardancy, meeting critical safety requirements for high energy density lithium-ion batteries. This work offers a viable pathway for developing multifunctional thermal management materials suitable for advanced battery systems and other electronics.

Water and soil pollution caused by Cu 2+ is not conducive to sustainable development of environment and could cause damage to environment and even human body. Currently, fluorescent sensor solutions analysis method has been used for Cu 2+ detection, but they also suffer from drawbacks including easy leakage, difficult storage, and inaccurate. Herein, a green solid-state biomass fluorescence platform (NBU-CDs) consisting of xylan-derived carbon dots (U-CDs) and polylactic acid/polycaprolactone (PLA/PCL) was designed by using in situ electrospinning technology. The prepared NBU-CDs fluorescence platform showed good fluorescence effect and can be served as fluorescence sensor for detecting Cu 2+ with high sensitively, selectively and low detection limit (LOD = 0.83 μM). The practical applications of NBU-CDs exhibited high specificity for Cu 2+ detection in zebrafish, water samples (school lake, Xuanwu Lake and Yangtze River) with high recovery rates of 97 %–104 % and soil (pond soil, grassland soil and bamboo soil) samples, respectively. The developed fluorescence platform was utilized to predict water and soil safety by monitoring Cu 2+ concentration and provides a new strategy for Cu 2+ detection.

Currently, designing smart membranes with multifunctional effectiveness is crucial to food freshness monitoring and retention. Herein, an active colorimetric Janus bilayer membrane with directional water transport (DWT) performance is constructed by electrospinning, which comprises a hydrophilic layer of silk fibroin-bayberry anthocyanins (SF-BAs) and a hydrophobic layer of polycaprolactone-eucalyptus oil (PCL-EO). The entities of BAs and EO are well dispersed in the fiber matrix by hydrogen bonds and physical interactions, respectively. BAs endow the membrane colorimetric response and antioxidant activity, and EO contributes to the antibacterial activity while DWT performance is generated from the asymmetric wettability of the two layers. The bilayer membrane has an accumulative one-way transport index of 1077%, an overall moisture management capacity of 0.76 and a water evaporation rate of 0.48 g h −1 . Moreover, the release of BAs and EO was predominantly controlled by Fickian diffusion. As a pH-sensing indicator, PCL-EO@SF-BAs is highly sensitive to external pH stimuli and the response is reversible. In addition to freshness monitoring, PCL-EO@SF-BAs can extend the shelf-life of pork beyond 100% at 4 °C. Also, it can extend the shelf life of shrimp by approximately 70% at 25 °C with the synergistic effect of antibacterial activity and the DWT performance.

Increasingly growing problems in vascular access for long-term hemodialysis lead to a considerable demand for synthetic small diameter vascular prostheses, which usually suffer from some drawbacks and are associated to high failure rates. Incorporating the concept of in situ tissue engineering (TE) into synthetic small diameter blood vessels, for example, thermoplastic poly(ether urethane) (TPU) ones, could provide an alternative approach for vascular access that profits from the advantages of excellent mechanical properties of synthetic polymer materials (early cannulation) and unique biointegration regeneration of autologous neovascular tissues (long-term fistulae). In this study, a kind of heparinized small diameter (d = 2.5 mm) TPU/poly(ε-caprolactone) (TPU/PCL-Hep) bi-layered blood vessels was electrospun with an inner layer of PCL and an outer layer of TPU. Afterward, the inner surface heparinization was conducted by coupling H 2 N-PEG-NH 2 to the corroded PCL layer and then heparin to the attached H 2 N-PEG-NH 2 via the EDCI/NHS chemistry. Herein a heparinized PCL inner layer could not only inhibit thrombosis, but also provide sufficient space for the neotissue regeneration via biodegradation with time. Meanwhile, a TPU outer layer could confer the vascular access the good mechanical properties, such as flexibility, viability and fitness of elasticity between the grafts and host blood vessels as evidenced by the adequate mechanical properties, such as compliance (4.43 ± 0.07%/ 100 mmHg), burst pressure (1447 ± 127 mmHg) and suture retention strength (1.26 ± 0.07 N) without blood seepage after implantation. Furthermore, a rabbit carotid aortic replacement model for 5 months was demonstrated 100% animal survival and 86% graft patency. Puncture assay also revealed the puncture resistance and self-sealing (hemostatic time < 2 min). Histological analysis highlighted neotissue regeneration, host cell infiltration and graft remodeling in terms of extracellular matrix turnover. Altogether, these results showed promising aspects of small diameter TPU/PCL-Hep bi-layered grafts for hemodialytic vascular access applications.

Objectives Pulp necrosis in immature permanent teeth arrests root development and compromises long-term prognosis. This study aimed to develop a multifunctional scaffold integrating structural biomimicry, mechanical matching, and sustained growth factor release for orderly root regeneration. Materials and methods A poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) conical scaffold was fabricated via melt electrowriting (MEW) combined with mechanical winding. Bone morphogenetic protein‑2 (BMP‑2)-loaded microspheres were prepared and physically incorporated into the scaffold. The scaffold surface was modified with collagen. Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) were cultured on the scaffold to evaluate proliferation, adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation. Results The scaffold exhibited a trilayer “collagen–microsphere–PCL” architecture with mechanical compatibility (elastic modulus: 22.5 MPa; fracture strength: 5.29 MPa; elongation: 441.59%). Microspheres (2.86 ± 0.45 μm) showed a gradient distribution and sustained release (70–75% over 90 days). In vitro, the scaffold promoted hDPSC adhesion and proliferation and significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation with elevated alkaline phosphatase activity, upregulated the expression of osteogenic-related genes, and increased protein levels. Conclusions The scaffold integrates structural support, controlled growth factor delivery, and a bioactive interface, offering a promising strategy for root development in immature permanent teeth. Clinical relevance By enabling physiological root development, the scaffold addresses a critical unmet need, offering a viable alternative to conventional root canal therapy.

Despite advancements in small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs), they continue to face significant clinical challenges, including thrombosis, insufficient endothelialization, and incompatible mechanical properties. To address these limitations, this study developed a heparin-incorporated vascular adventitia extracellular matrix (vaECM)/PCL fiber-co-hydrogel vascular scaffold using electrospinning-co-electrospray technology combined with vaECM self-assembly gelation. This scaffold combines the mechanical strength of PCL fibers with the bioactivity of vaECM hydrogel, while the incorporated heparin enhances its antithrombotic properties. Material characterization reveals that the fiber-co-hydrogel scaffold possesses a biomimetic layered structure, tunable mechanical properties, self-healing ability, low swelling ratio, and hierarchical degradation. Co-culture experiments with endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells demonstrate that this scaffold significantly promotes endothelial cell adhesion, proliferation, and migration, as well as the maturation of smooth muscle cells. Blood compatibility tests confirm its superior anticoagulant and antiplatelet properties. In a rat abdominal aorta replacement model, the scaffold showed significantly enhanced endothelial coverage by week 4, and by week 16, it supported the regeneration of mature vascular smooth muscle and orderly remodeling of the extracellular matrix. These results highlight the remarkable vascular regenerative potential of this fiber-co-hydrogel scaffold, driven by its bioactive vaECM hydrogel and bio-matched material stiffness, offering a promising avenue for the clinical application of small-diameter vascular grafts.

As drug therapies become increasingly sophisticated, the synergistic benefits of two or more drugs are often required. In this study, we aimed at improving anti-tumor efficiency of paclitaxel (PTX)-incorporated thermo-sensitive injectable hydrogel by the synergy of burst release of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX⋅HCl). Thermosensitive injectable hydrogel composed of nanoparticles assembled from amphiphilic copolymer poly(ε-caprolactone-co-1,4,8-trioxa[4.6]spiro-9-undecanone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolaone-co-1,4,8-trioxa[4.6]spiro-9-undecanone) (PECT) was fabricated. Hydrophobic PTX and hydrophilic DOX⋅HCl were loaded simultaneously in the thermo-sensitive injectable hydrogel by a two-stage entrapment. Thermosensitive gelling behaviors of drug-loading PECT nanoparticle aqueous dispersions were studied. In vitro release profiles of PTX and DOX⋅HCl and in vivo anti-tumor effect by dual drugs from PECT hydrogel were investigated. The results showed that hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs could be successfully entrapped in PECT hydrogel simultaneously without affecting its thermo-sensitive behavior. In vitro release profiles demonstrated the burst release of DOX⋅HCl and the sustained release of PTX. Anti-tumor effect was improved by a fast and tense attack caused by the burst release of hydrophilic DOX⋅HCl from hydrogel, which was continued by the sequent sustained release of PTX-incorporated nanoparticles and remnant DOX⋅HCl. Unintentionally, entrapped in PECT hydrogel, hydrophilic DOX⋅HCl was observed to have a sustained releasing pattern in vitro and in vivo .

Acute Lung Injury (ALI) is a clinical syndrome associated with various respiratory diseases and injuries. While inhalable drug delivery systems offer the advantage of direct pulmonary targeting and reduced systemic toxicity, their therapeutic efficacy is frequently compromised by the tracheobronchial mucus barrier. To address this limitation, we developed PCL-ss-PSBMA, a novel nanocarrier engineered to overcome the constraints of conventional micelle platforms, which typically depend on either hydrophilic coatings or single-response mechanisms. By integrating zwitterionic groups and disulfide bonds in a dual-functional design, PCL-ss-PSBMA achieves synergistic optimization of mucus barrier penetration and glutathione (GSH)-triggered drug release. In addition, the nanocarrier also exhibits excellent biocompatibility, further ensuring its safety in therapeutic applications. In an ALI murine model, PCL-ss-PSBMA@DEX markedly improved the delivery efficiency and utilization rate of dexamethasone (DEX) through its dual mechanisms of mucus penetration and stimulus-responsive drug release. This design not only enhances the deposition of the drug in the lungs but also achieves efficient treatment of ALI by precisely controlling drug release, demonstrating its potential as an advanced strategy for treating respiratory diseases.

Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) constructed from polyurethane (PU) and epoxy resin (EP) are high-performance polyester-based materials. In this study, we systematically investigated the effect of variation in the PU component, including its content and molecular weight, on the property of EP/PU IPNs. The focus was on the changes in dynamic mechanical properties, characterized and analyzed through dynamic parameters under different modes, to reveal the influence of the PU component on the energy dissipation capacity of the material. Additionally, we conducted performance tests on IPNs materials constructed with different polyols, with a particular emphasis on dynamic mechanical property, and identified the superior PCL-2000 series (the effective damping temperature range △T is close to 50 °C in tensile mode, and the peak of the loss factor in compressive mode still reaches nearly 0.8). These findings constitute a comprehensive study on the dynamic mechanical property of EP/PU-based materials and provide crucial data support and empirical analysis for the development of high-energy functional material.
