Ultralight, Conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS Hybrid Aerogels for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Dominated by the Absorption Mechanism

Guo-Yu Yang,Shao-Zhe Wang,Hong-Tai Sun,Xu-Ming Yao,Chuan-Bing Li,Yu-Jun Li,Jian-Jun Jiang

MXene aerogels with a porous microstructure are a promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material due to its low density and excellent electrical conductivity, which has attracted widespread attention. Compared with traditional EMI shielding materials that rely on reflection as the primary mechanism, MXene aerogels with absorption as the dominant mechanism have greater potential for development as a novel EMI shielding material because of its ability to reduce environmental contamination from reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves from materials. In this study, a novel Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS hybrid aerogel was presented by freeze-drying and thermal annealing using few-layered Ti3C2Tx MXene and the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). PEDOT:PSS not only improved the gelling ability of Ti3C2Tx but also successfully established a conductive bridge between MXene nanosheets. The experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid aerogel exhibited an obvious porous microstructure, which was beneficial for the multiple scattering of EM waves within the materials. The EMI shielding effectiveness and specific shielding effectiveness reached up to 59 dB and 10,841 dB·cm2·g–1, respectively, while the SER/SET ratio value was only 0.05, indicating superior wave absorption performance. Furthermore, the good impedance matching, due to the electrical conductance loss and polarization loss effect of the composites, plays a critical role in their excellent wave absorption and EMI shielding performance. Therefore, this work provides a practical approach for designing and fabricating lightweight absorption-dominated EMI shielding materials.

A transparent PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE/epoxy thermoelectric composite device with excellent flexibility and environmental stability

Fanjia Zeng,Xu Zhao,Mengying Luo,Wen Wang,Xing Qing,Ying Lu,Weibing Zhong,Qiongzhen Liu,Jie Luo,Mufang Li,Dong Wang

With the rapid development of thermoelectric (TE) generators, the TE device that is transparent, flexible, and can be used for a long time under high humidity and low/high temperature has aroused great interests. In this study, a new hydrophilic substrate of poly (vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (PVA-co-PE) nanofiber membrane was used to support the poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), and then the PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE composite was encapsulated by epoxy. Due to the size effect of nanofibers, the PVA-co-PE/epoxy composite area shows a good transmittance of 72% at a wavelength of 600 nm, while the area containing the PEDOT:PSS remains black. This kind of transparent packaging structure is more conducive to the application of TE device. Moreover, the special interpenetrating structure and hydrogen bonding between the three phases of PEDOT:PSS, PVA-co-PE NM and epoxy resin greatly enhance the interfacial adhesion of PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE/epoxy composite. The morphology, mechanical properties , transmittance, TE performance, bending resistance and environmental stability of the transparent composite TE device were analyzed. The new composite structure proposed in this research gives the PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE/epoxy TE device outstanding flexibility and environmental stability. The TE performance remains stable after 2000 cycles repeated bending and after placing one end of the TE device in hot steam and ice water. All the results demonstrate the potential application of the transparent composite TE device in the field of flexible electronic device packaging and applications.

A PEDOT:PSS conductive hydrogel incorporated with Prussian blue nanoparticles for wearable and noninvasive monitoring of glucose

Changshun Xu,Danfeng Jiang,Yuancai Ge,Liping Huang,Yang Xiao,Xueqian Ren,Xiaohu Liu,Qingwen Zhang,Yi Wang

Currently, there is no commercially-available noninvasive method for glucose monitoring in the interstitial fluid (ISF) mainly due to the measurement accuracy, sensitivity and/or the weak blood correlation. Here, we present an electrochemical biosensor based on PEDOT:PSS conductive hydrogel incorporated with Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) for the noninvasive and continuous monitoring of glucose on body. The hydrogel was prepared with the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and Zonyl FS-300, which helped to improve the expanding of the polymer chains for the formation of better conductive and nanoporous networks. The hydrogel-based biosensor showed a low detection limit of 0.85 μM for glucose detection and high sensitivity up to 340.1 μA·mM −1 ·cm −2 , which was about 10-fold higher than the counterparts based on agarose and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) hydrogels. Furthermore, it provided good accuracy with commercial glucometer for the glucose detection in serum. More importantly, incorporated with the reverse iontophoresis (RI), the hydrogel was applied as a skin patch on human subject for the in vivo noninvasive and continuous monitoring of ISF-borne glucose. The results showed good correlation with that measured by blood glucometer. We believe such glucose biosensor paves the way to clinically wearable noninvasive glucose monitoring in diabetics.

Highly Flexible and Foldable Paper-Based Thermoelectric Generator Prepared with Post-Treatment-Free PEDOT:PSS Hybrid Ink

Guixiang Chen,Zhenhang He,Zhen Liu,Xin Li,Zhengyin Yao,Peng Zhang

Paper-based thermoelectric (PTE) generators have recently emerged as a green technology that can help alleviate environment pollution and the energy crisis. In this work, a PTE generator was prepared by coating a post-treatment-free thermoelectric ink consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) doped with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium:tricyanomethanide (EMIM:TCM) onto the card paper. By tuning the molar concentration of the EMIM:TCM to 0.17 M and with hot-pressing, the PTE generator showed a decent power factor (PF) value of 6.82 μW m−1K−2, which was higher than the values of PTE in the literature. This phenomenon could be attributed to the synergistic effect of high-performance thermoelectric ink (i.e., PF = 175 μW m−1K−2when deposited on glass slide) and the hot-pressing. The hot-pressing enhanced the packing density of cellulose fibers and the associated PEDOT:PSS hybrid, which enabled the formation of long-range conductive paths. In addition, the PTE had good mechanical stability, indicated by no significant change of the power factor values after cyclic folding 10,000 times. Moreover, the structure of as-prepared PTE could be easily tuned into different shapes that are promising for the preparation of flexible wearable thermoelectric generators.Keywords:paper-based thermoelectric;PEDOT:PSS;hierarchical structure;mechanical stability

Enhancing the brightness of CsPbBr3 quantum dot electroluminescence light-emitting diodes by manipulation of PEDOT:PSS films

Zhen Wang,Yue Peng,Yongsheng Lu,Xiaosheng Tang,Xing Tan,Zhenshan Liang,Qiang Huang,Fei Qi,Nan Zhang,Weiwei Chen

With solution-processability, low-temperature proper energy level and superior stability, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is one common hole-transport material for the quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) application. However, the conductivity of the traditional PEDOT:PSS is very low, which has an adverse effect on QLED devices. Herein, one surface-annealing method for the PEDOT:PSS film to exchange their original composition and surface morphology is proposed. The advantage of this approach lies in the fact that the conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS film annealed with toluene (1.25 S cm−1) and ethylene glycol (EG, 10.52 S cm−1) are obviously improved compared with the air-annealing method (0.13 S cm−1). The difference is that the EG-washed PEDOT:PSS film shows a relatively rough surface with more PEDOT domains, whereas the toluene treated PEDOT:PSS film can promote the formation of a smooth, PSS-dominated surface and change the PEDOT chain structure from coiled to linear, thus, the conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS film is enhanced. As a result, the QLED device achieves a maximum luminance of 31 140 cd m−2 and power efficiency of 13.4 lm W−1, showing 48% and 25% enhancements, respectively, compared to the control device. This work provides an efficient approach for improving of perovskite QLED performance.

Modifying the nanostructures of PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX composite hole transport layers for highly efficient polymer solar cells

Chunli Hou,Huangzhong Yu

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, MXenes, typically represented by Ti3C2TX, have shown great promise in optoelectronic devices due to their metallic electrical conductivity, large surface area, superior hydrophilicity and excellent transparency. Herein, to improve the conductivity of polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films, we incorporate solution-processable 2D Ti3C2TX nanosheets into PEDOT:PSS to fabricate PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX composite layers, and polymer solar cells (PSCs) with PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX composite films as hole transport layers (HTLs) are fabricated for the first time. The nanostructures and the corresponding hole injection properties of PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX composite layers are systematically evaluated. Based on the non-fullerene PBDB-T:ITIC system, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.02% is obtained for the device with PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX as the HTL, which is improved by 13.5% compared to that of the control device with pure PEDOT:PSS as the HTL (9.72%). When using the PM6:Y6 system as the active layer, the PCE of the device based on PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX is improved to 14.55% from 13.10% for the PEDOT:PSS reference device. 2D Ti3C2TX nanoflakes with higher conductivity construct additional charge transfer pathways between the PEDOT nanocrystals and induce conformational transition of PEDOT from a coil to a linear/expanded-coil structure, leading to an improvement in conductivity and device performance. Interestingly, PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX based devices also exhibit enhanced long-term stability compared to PEDOT:PSS based devices. These results show that PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2TX composite films have a promising prospect in high efficiency organic optoelectronics.

A conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS hydrogel based wearable sensor for accurate uric acid detection in human sweat

Zhenying Xu,Jingyao Song,Bingrui Liu,Shaoping Lv,Fengxian Gao,Xiliang Luo,Peipei Wang

Noninvasive wearable sensors present key information about targeting epidermally retrievable biofluids in human health monitoring. Tracking circulating uric acid (UA) in human sweat performs a simple and prompt way for reducing risk of gout and hyperuricemia. Herein, we propose a wearable microfluidic-based electrochemical sensor via incorporating conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS hydrogel towards accurate and sensitive detection of UA in sweat. The microfluidic device validly realizes the capture for sweat in real-time, and the conducting PEDOT:PSS hydrogel with large surface area plays multiple roles in this wearable sensor for UA detecting, electrolyte storing, and flexibility enhancing. The prepared flexible sensor shows an ultrahigh sensitivity of 0.875 µA µM −1 cm −2 and a low limit of detection (LOD) down to 1.2 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, it can detect UA levels in real human sweat samples collected from volunteers before and after purine-rich diets, and the results are highly correlated with those measured by the standard enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). This PEDOT:PSS hydrogel based flexible sensor, together with the sweat-collecting microfluidic device, is believed to be promising for the construction of high performance wearable sensors to monitor biomarkers, metabolites and nutrients.

Enhanced thermoelectric performances of flexible PEDOT:PSS film by synergistically tuning the ordering structure and oxidation state

Qikai Li,Qing Zhou,Long Wen,Weishu Liu

Flexible polymer thermoelectric thin film attracts wide attentions because it is compatible with the wearable electronics and e-skin. Herein, we reported an enhanced thermoelectric power factor of PEDOT:PSS from around 1 μW m −1  K −2 to 117 μW m −1  K −2 and high substrate-free strain of 20% through synergistically tuning the ordering structure and the oxidation state. An ionic liquid (EMImTCM) was used to decouple the ionic interaction between PEDOT and PSS, rearranging the morphology of structure that significantly benefit the mechanical flexibility and the electrical conductivity. The addition of L-ascorbic acid was confirmed as effective dedoping additive of PEDOT polymer that changed the oxidation state and hence boosted the thermoelectric power factor without notable sacrifice of the mechanical flexibility. Moreover, the electrical conductivity of the corresponding film maintained electrically stable (Δ R/R 0  < 0.12%) under 1000 bending cycles which indicates the great bendability. Our work demonstrated the feasibility to controllably tailor the thermoelectric and mechanical performance of the PEDOT:PSS flexible polymer thermoelectric thin film.

Assembly of silver nanowires and PEDOT:PSS with hydrocellulose toward highly flexible, transparent and conductivity-stable conductors

Xu Wang,Jianhong Zhou,Ying Zhu,Wanke Cheng,Dawei Zhao,Guangwen Xu,Haipeng Yu

Improving the conductivity stability of flexible conductors has a positive impact on the working performance and service life of portable electronic devices. However, designing a conductor material with both conductivity-stable and flexible performance is still not an easy task because of the conductive network damage under large deformation or high humidity conditions. Here, we surmount this challenge by developing an interfacial assembly/encapsulation integration strategy for the construction of flexible, transparent, and conductivity-stable film. Under the synergistic effect of coordination complexation and hydrogen bonding, silver nanowires (AgNWs) are sandwiched encapsulated by regenerated cellulose film (as flexible substrate) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) nanosheets (as sealing coat). The resulting hybrid film has a robust interfacial structure and prominently stable properties. Even when subjected to harsh condition such as a high-moisture environment of 90% relative humidity and 65 °C temperature for up to 60 days, repeated bending for 500 times, peeling over 400 times or soaking in water for 30 days, the film still exhibits a high and stable conductivity, better than most previously reported values for AgNWs-based films. With this strategy as base, we demonstrate a flexible, transparent and biocompatible strain-to-electricity sensor with high working stability and performance.

PEDOT:PSS/graphene quantum dots films with enhanced thermoelectric properties via strong interfacial interaction and phase separation

Du Fei-Peng,Cao Nan-Nan,Zhang Yun-Fei,Fu Ping,Wu Yan-Guang,Lin Zhi-Dong,Shi Run,Amini Abbas,Cheng Chun

The typical conductive polymer of PEDOT:PSS has recently attracted intensive attention in thermoelectric conversion because of its low cost and low thermal conductivity as well as high electrical conductivity. However, compared to inorganic counterparts, the relatively poor thermoelectric performance of PEDOT:PSS has greatly limited its development and high-tech applications. Here, we report a dramatic enhancement in the thermoelectric performance of PEDOT:PSS by constructing unique composite films with graphene quantum dots (GQDs). At room temperature, the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of PEDOT:PSS/GQDs reached to 7172 S/m and 14.6 μV/K, respectively, which are 30.99% and 113.2% higher than those of pristine PEDOT:PSS. As a result, the power factor of the optimized PEDOT:PSS/GQDs composite is 550% higher than that of pristine PEDOT:PSS. These significant improvements are attributed to the ordered alignment of PEDOT chains on the surface of GQDs, originated from the strong interfacial interaction between PEDOT:PSS and GQDs and the separation of PEDOT and PSS phases. This study evidently provides a promising route for PEDOT:PSS applied in high-efficiency thermoelectric conversion.

Moderately reduced graphene oxide/PEDOT:PSS as hole transport layer to fabricate efficient perovskite hybrid solar cells

Xu Huang,Heng Guo,Jian Yang,Kai Wang,Xiaobin Niu,Xiaobo Liu

Graphene oxide (GO) with single layer was moderately reduced at 200 °C for 4 h under N 2 . Then the moderately reduced graphene oxide (rGO) water solution was employed as an additive to tune the properties of conventional poly(ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) solution. It's found that the incorporation of rGO into PEDOT:PSS nearly did not change its transparency, hydrophilic property , or the surface roughness . So, the rGO/PEDOT:PSS composite was used as a hole transport layer (HTL) to fabricate perovskite solar cells (PSCs). As a result, PSCs with rGO/PEDOT:PSS as HTL exhibit improved power conversion efficiency than that of PSCs with PEDOT:PSS as HTL. Our findings show that moderately reduced rGO/PEDOT:PSS could be an efficient HTL to improve power conversion efficiency of PSCs.

Ferroelectric-like hysteresis effect observed in carbon quantum dots sandwiched between PMMA and PEDOT:PSS hybrid film

Xuguang Zhang,Jianping Xu,Shaobo Shi,Xueliang Wang,Xiangguo Zhao,Ping Zhou,Zeming Liu,Chang Wang,Lan Li

The ferroelectric-like hysteretic I–V effect was observed in the multilayer film of PMMA/carbon quantum dot (CD)/PEDOT:PSS using ITO and Al metal as the electrodes. The multilayer film exhibited two different resistance states and larger hysteresis window under the electric field compared to the film without CD addition. The influence of additional CD layers on the short circuit current (Isc) and open circuit voltage (Voc) values is related to the interfacial polarization between PMMA and PEDOT:PSS layers. The introduction of a CD layer intensifies interfacial polarization for two dielectric layers, resulting in the larger hysteresis window. An interfacial polarization field E′ increases with the external electric field increasing and reaches a maximum value at the threshold voltage Voc of ±15 V. The switch reliability of the device is operated over 5 × 103 times in a succession of periodic pulses without any performance degradation.
