Fabrication of poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) amphiphilic diblock copolymer on silicon substrates via surface-initiated reverse iodine transfer polymerization

Li-Ping Wang,Xin-Hu Lv,Guang Li,Yu-Chao Li

Amphiphilic diblock copolymer on silicon substrates were synthesized via surface-initiated reverse iodine transfer polymerization (RITP) technique. The silicon substrates (Si (111) surface) were modified with the azo groups, which were introduced by the treatment of Si (111) surface with 4,4′-azobis (4-cyanopentanoic acid). The poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were then prepared under RITP conditions from the Si (111) wafer. The synthesis of amphiphilic diblock copolymer was carried out on Si- g -PMMA substrate by sequential addition of monomer N -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM). The observed narrow molecular weight distributions ( M w / M n ), linear kinetic plots, and linear plots of molecular weight ( M n ) versus monomer conversion indicate that the chain growth from the silicon substrates is a controlled process with a “living” characteristic. The ellipsometry and contact angle results indicated that the MMA had grafted from the surface of the silicon substrates successfully and the graft layer was well defined. The structure of the polymer and the ability to extend the chains were characterized and confirmed with the surface sensitive techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscope. Synergistic flame retardant effects of ammonium polyphosphate in ethylene-vinyl acetate/layered double hydroxides composites

Long Li,Yi Qian,Chuanmei Jiao

Mg–Al–Fe ternary layered double hydroxides (LDH) were synthesized based on bayer red mud by calcination-rehydration method, and characterized using X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The synergistic flame retardant effects of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with LDH in ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) composites were studied using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), and smoke density test (SDT). The thermal degradation behavior of EVA/LDH/APP composites was examined by thermal gravimetric analysis-fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR). The results showed that LOI values decreased by incorporation of APP together with LDH; and, a suitable amount of APP in EVA/LDH composites can apparently improve UL 94 rating. The CCT results indicated that heat release rate (HRR) of the EVA/LDH/APP composites with APP decreased in comparison with that of the EVA/LDH composites. The SDT results showed that APP was helpful to suppress smoke. The TG-FTIR data showed that the composites with APP had a higher thermal stability than the EVA/LDH composites at high temperature. Preparation and characterization of polystyrene-grafted attapulgite via surface-initiated redox polymerization

Liu Zhang,Haicun Yang,Hui Liu,Qingting Ni,Fanghong Gong

Polystyrene-grafted attapulgite (ATP-g-PS) was prepared using surface-initiated redox initiation via graft from approach. ATP was modified with (3- aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) to anchor amine on the surface (ATP-NH 2 ), and then ATP-NH 2 was further treated with 4-(diethylamino) salicylaldehyde (DEAS) to give aromatic tertiary amine groups functional ATP (ATP-ATA). Subsequently, the surface-initiated redox polymerization of styrene in the presence of ATP-ATA and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was performed to afford ATP-g-PS . The chemical grafting of PS on the surface of ATP was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis . The crystal structure of PS-grafted ATP was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The morphology of ATP-g-PS was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) . POLYM. ENG. Effect of core–shell zinc hydroxystannate nanoparticle–organic macromolecule composite flame retardant prepared by masterbatch method on flame-retardant behavior and mechanical properties of flexible poly(vinyl chloride)

Zhi-Wei Li,Bing Shao,Yong-Shan Huang,Xiao-Hong Li,Zhi-Jun Zhang

Macromolecule flame retardant melamine-dicyandiamide-formaldehyde-phosphoric acid (denoted as MDFP) was used as the shell material to synthesize zinc hydroxystannate@MDFP (denoted as ZHS@MDFP), a novel composite flame retardant with core–shell structure, via masterbatch method. The morphology and structure of ZHS@MDFP were analyzed by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and thermal analysis. Moreover, the effect of ZHS@MDFP as a flame retardant on the flame-retardant behavior and mechanical properties of flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (denoted as PVC) was investigated. It has been found that as-synthesized ZHS@MDFP composite flame retardant has core–shell structure. Besides, as-synthesized ZHS@MDFP as a core–shell flame retardant is superior to ZHS in increasing the limiting oxygen index and decreasing the smoke density rating of PVC, which is because the decomposition of MDFP shell as the blowing agent expands the char layer thereby improving the flame-retarding capability of ZHS core. More importantly, ZHS@MDFP does not cause damage to the tensile strength and elongation at break of PVC matrix, which implies that the MDFP shell favors to improve the compatibility between ZHS and flexible PVC matrix. Pendant crosslinked poly(aryl ether sulfone) copolymers sulfonated on backbone for proton exchange membranes

Dongsheng Li,Zhimin Li,Fei Hu,Shengru Long,Gang Zhang,Jie Yang

A series of sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) copolymers containing phenyl pendant groups with sulfonic acid groups on the backbone were synthesized through condensation polymerization. The degree of sulfonation (DS) of the copolymers was controlled by changing the feed ratios of sulfonated to unsulfonated monomers. Post-crosslink reactions are carried out with 4,4′-thiodibenzoic acid (TDA) as a crosslinker and the carboxylic acid groups in TDA can undergo Friedel–Craft acylation with the phenyls pendent rings in sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s copolymers to prepare polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cell applications. The chemical structures of crosslinked and uncrosslinked sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s copolymers (SPSFs and CSPSFs) were characterized by FTIR, 1 H NMR spectra. The thermal and mechanical properties of the membranes were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and stress–strain test. The dependence of water uptake, methanol permeability, proton conductivity, and selectivity on DS was studied. Transmission electron microscopic observations revealed that SPSFs and CSPSFs membranes form well-defined microphase separated structures. POLYM. ENG. Development of pH response film based on potato starch/polyvinyl alcohol using Kyoho grape skin extract to monitor pork freshness

Shihui Wang,Biao Zhao,Yanling Hao,Qixiang He

In this study, the optimal ratio of starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was successfully selected by response surface method. The novel packaging films were fabricated by immobilizing Kyoho skin extract (KSE) within starch/PVA composite film by the casting method. The mechanical property, PH sensitivity, and other properties of films with different KSE content (1–5 mL) were studied. The starch/PVA film with 3 mL KSE (SPK3.0 film) showed more uniform structure than the starch/PVA film in microscope. At the same time, the film has strong mechanical properties and low water barrier capacity. Infrared analysis of the film further revealed hydrogen bond interaction between film matrix and KSE. The smart packaging film displayed distinguishable changes of color from purple to green in pH (1–13). Furthermore, the smart films possessed excellent antioxidant. Therefore, the SPK films had the potential application potential in the field of packaging. Highlights Barrier properties and antioxidant activity were enhanced significantly by the addition of KSE. The film components are connected by hydrogen bonds so that they have good compatibility. The functional film shows different colors in the range of pH 1–13.

Development of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) composites with high thermal oxidation stability using Chrysanthemum morifolium extract as a natural additive

Zhe Kong,Yueqiu Li,Tao Zhuang,Jie Zhang,Qidong Wang,Qing Yu,Guiqing Cheng,Zhongwei Wang,Yuxi Han

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is one of the solutions to the energy crisis and white pollution. However, the poor thermo-oxidative stability limits its wide applications. In this work, Chrysanthemum morifolium extract (CME) as a natural additive was used to modify the PBAT. The oxidation onset temperature (OOT) results showed that the CME could provide PBAT with high thermal oxidation stability. By the presence of 2.5 wt% CME, the OOT value of PBAT-CME 2.5 increased by 52°C compared with the neat PBAT. The outstanding antioxidant capacity is attributed to the excellent free radical quenching capacity of CME, whose main components consist of six kinds of phenolic compounds. Moreover, the PBAT-CME 1.5 composite could achieve the balance between the mechanical property and thermo-oxidative stability, the OOT result of PBAT-CME 1.5 increased by 42°C, the tensile strength reached 103.1%, and the elongation at break could retain 91.4% of that of neat PBAT. Besides, the processing property, degradation performance, and surface hydrophobic nature of modified PBAT samples were all improved. This work proposes a facile method to obtain completely natural biodegradable composites to expand the practical applications of PBAT. Highlights The main components in CME are phenolic compounds. CME showed high free radical scavenging efficiency. CME improved the thermal oxidation stability of the PBAT matrix. The addition of CME could still maintain good mechanical properties of PBAT. The introduction of CME promoted the degradation of PBAT films.

Crystallization, thermal, and compatibility performances of poly (butylene succinate) (PBS)/poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R) 3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) blends

Yanbo Li,Jinsuo Yu,Deyu Wei,Chengkai Liu,Yan Zhao,Junjia Bian,Shulin Sun,Hongwei Pan,Huili Yang,Lijing Han,Huiliang Zhang

Biodegradable materials provide protective properties comparable to conventional plastics while diminishing reliance on nonrenewable resources. Environmentally friendly polymer blends were prepared by melting poly(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) with poly (butylene succinate) (PBS). PBS was synthesized through esterification and polycondensation using 1,4-butanediol and succinic acid, with tetrabutyltitanate as the catalyst. The PHBHHx is supplied by Bulepha®PHA Company of China, model number BP330. The effects of PHBHHx content on thermal behavior, compatibility, and thermal stability of PBS/PHBHHx blends were systematically investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicated that the addition of PHBHHx influenced the crystallization behavior, the crystallization temperature ( T c ) of PBS decreased meanwhile, the crystallization half-time of PBS is reduced to 1.5 min compared with neat PBS (5 min) after isothermal is crystallized at 95°C. Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM) images also revealed that crystallization rate accelerated in the blend with increasing PHBHHx content. Rheological and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis demonstrated that incorporating a significant content of PHBHHx reduced compatibility between PBS and PHBHHx. Mechanical property testing indicates that the addition of PHBHHx reduced the toughness of blends. Additionally, the addition of a small amount of PHBHHx imparts a higher crystallinity (56%) and heat resistance of the PBS/PHBHHx blends (78°C) was higher than neat PBS (74°C). Highlights Laboratory synthesis of high molecular weight PBS. Optimal ratios improved crystallinity and thermal stability of blends. A systematic study of the crystallization properties of blends.

Evolution of the cavity structure of HDPE/UHMWPE blends during cold stretching

Sun Yun,Xuefeng Pan,Feng Zhang,Xuelian He

The cavitation process of high-performance HDPE/UHMWPE blends with a uniform dispersion of UHMWPE during cold stretching was investigated. It was observed that incorporating a small amount of UHMWPE into the HDPE matrix resin can serve as a nucleating agent, increasing the number of contact sites and accelerating the crystallization rate. This leads to the formation of thicker lamellar crystals and tethered molecules, ultimately enhancing the mechanical properties of the HDPE matrix. Furthermore, the relationship between the natural tensile ratio and strain-hardening modulus was confirmed. Microstructural changes within the blends were also explored. As the drawing tangles in the middle, the cavities subsequently evolve by collapsing and merging to align parallel to the tensile direction, culminating in tensile damage forming a large crack in the final macroscopic form. As a result, the presence of more tethered molecules in the later stages of stretching inhibits further cavity growth. Highlights The HDPE/UHMWPE blends were prepared by solution blending and ultrasound-assisted twin-screw extrusion. The mechanisms underlying the formation and evolution of cavities in HDPE/UHMWPE blends, which lead to stress whitening during tensile damage, were examined by using DSC and SAXS/WAXD. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties was analyzed by cold-drawing the molded blended sheets at room temperature.

Huolin Zhong,Hui Fang,Zhao Yan,Fangjuan Wu

MXenes, two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, show great potential in various applications. However, traditional synthesis methods often involve toxic fluorine-containing etchants, limiting large-scale production. This study introduces a novel, environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets using stone grinding-assisted exfoliation and mild alkaline etching at 80°C. The synthesized MXene nanosheets exhibited high aspect ratios with transverse dimensions mostly on the micrometer scale and a thickness of approximately 3 nm, corresponding to one to two layers of Ti 3 C 2 . MXene/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite membranes were fabricated to demonstrate practical applications. The composite membrane containing 1 wt% MXene achieved a 99.9% UV shielding rate while maintaining 67% visible light transmittance. Furthermore, it significantly enhanced PLA's UV resistance, with protected samples retaining 98.1% tensile strength after 48 hours of UV exposure, compared with 47.8% for unprotected PLA. This fluorine-free synthesis method addresses environmental concerns and enables large-scale MXene production for advanced UV protection applications. Highlights Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is made via stone grinding and alkaline etching. MXene nanosheets are produced in the micron range and are 1–2 layers thick. The fluorine-free synthesis enables green, large-scale production of MXene. MXene/PVA films show 99.99% UV shielding with 67% visible light transmittance. MXene/PVA coating improves PLA's UV resistance, keeping 98.1% of tensile strength.

Yuhang Wang,Hongyan Fu,Jing Tan,Mahmoud M. Bubakir,Xiaodong Xu,Haoyi Li,Weimin Yang

The electrospun yarn for sutures has gained worldwide attention due to its fine fibers that resemble the extracellular matrix and its abundant functional sites. However, the use of a large number of toxic solvents poses safety risks and environmental pollution during production, making it challenging to directly apply electrospun yarn in the biomedical field. In this study, an environmentally friendly and safe method without toxic solvents was proposed for preparing antibacterial PLA ultrafine fiber sutures. This method involves melt electrospinning, hot-stretching, low-temperature plasma treatment, and chitosan grafting. The PLA ultrafine fiber sutures exhibit a high tensile strength which is 2.04 N before knotting and 1.57 N after knotting. The suture diameter is 118.7 μm and average fiber diameter is 1.72 μm. Chitosan grafted on the fiber surface provides excellent antibacterial properties for the sutures, with antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reaching 99.89% and 99.11%, respectively. The cell survival rate is 97.33%, while hemolysis rate is only 2.35%, demonstrating excellent biocompatibility of PLA ultrafine fiber sutures. This study presents a green and safe method for preparing clinically applicable absorbable antibacterial surgical sutures with high mechanical properties. Highlights A green and safe method for preparing PLA-CS ultrafine fiber sutures. PLA-CS suture with a tensile strength of 2.04 N and a fiber diameter of 1.72 μm. PLA-CS suture with good antibacterial property and biocompatibility.

High strength and anti-swelling hydrogel strain sensors based on amphiphilic polyurethane assemblies for human-motion detection

Lingling Lei,Baocheng Chen,Shiyu Wang,Xu Cheng,Jinghong Qiu,Haibo Wang

Hydrogel sensors are widely used in electronic skin, soft robotics, bioengineering, and medical therapy due to their excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and better biocompatibility. However, the swelling property of hydrogels has been hindering their application in underwater scenarios. Therefore, in this study, to address the anti-swelling behavior of hydrogels, MXene nanosheets were modified by 1 H, 1 H, 2 H, 2 H -perfluorooctyltrimethoxysilane and then compounded with acrylamide and polyurethane to obtain multifunctional conductive hydrogels (PAM-WPU/FMX hydrogels). Through the synergistic effect of chemical cross-linking and hydrogen bonding on the gel network, the hydrogel sensor was characterized by strong resistance to swelling (swelling ratio = 2.22), excellent mechanical properties (strain at break after swelling equilibrium = 418.6%), and high strain sensitivity. For underwater applications, this study offers a model technique for the quick gelation of strong, swelling-resistant hydrogels. Highlights Amphiphilic polyurethane micelles provided energy dissipation. Modified MXene was hydrophobic and electrically conductive. The strain of the hydrogel obtained after MXene modification was enhanced. The structural recovery capacity of both hydrogels was more than 60%. The modified hydrogel swollen but still had excellent sensing properties.
