Fabrication of Multifunctional Starch Mulch Film for Remediation of Pb(II)/Cr(VI) and Slow Release of NH4+ in Soil

Dongfang Wang,Jie Wu,Ruohan Li,Xianghai Kong,Pan Zhao,Yanping Zhu,Zerong Song,Jinjing Xu,Ziyu You,Yuhao Wang,Qingchuan Wu,Dongqing Cai

White pollution, excessive heavy metals, and fertilizer leaching have become key issues restricting the development of agriculture. In this work, we prepared multifunctional starch mulch film (SMF/MAP/FeS) by loading ferrous sulfide (FeS) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) onto commercial starch mulch film using poly(vinyl alcohol) for bonding. The removal efficiencies of Pb(II)/Cr(VI) for SMF/MAP/FeS could reach 97% and 93% in the aqueous solution. The adsorption isotherm, thermodynamic, and kinetics studies indicated that the adsorption process was an endothermic multimolecular-layer chemisorption. The main removal mechanisms for Pb(II)/Cr(VI) of SMF/MAP/FeS were precipitation and redox reactions. In addition, SMF/MAP/FeS not only possessed great thermal insulation and moisturizing properties but also could realize the slow release of NH4+. Furthermore, the maximum release rate of NH4+ for SMF/MAP/FeS could reach 93.4% during Pb(II)/Cr(VI) removal. At the same time, SMF/MAP/FeS has a good degradability at 50 d. A pot experiment indicated that SMF/MAP/FeS had a detoxifying effect on the Pb(II)/Cr(VI)-contaminated soil to promote the growth of pakchoi. Therefore, this study not only solves the problem of plastic and heavy metal pollution but also realizes the slow release of nutrients.

Effects of the electron beam irradiation on characterizations and the Pb(II) and cu(II) adsorption of zeolite ETS-10

Van-Hien Pham,Nguyen Quang Tu Le,Bich-Ngoc Duong,Tran Duy Tap,Ngoc-Quyen Tran,Van-Phuc Dinh

Electron beam (EB) irradiation successfully shifted ETS-10 zeolite from a microporous to a mesoporous framework. • XRD and SEM confirmed crystalline framework and morphology remained stable under EB radiation up to 1000 kGy. • 1000 kGy dose expanded pore size to 8 nm and increased the specific surface area to 333 m 2 /g. • Modified mesoporous structure improved ion diffusion, yielding high capacities of 878.16 mg/g for Pb(II) and 181.69 mg/g for Cu(II). • Adsorption behaviour followed the Sips model, indicating a hybrid multilayer-to-monolayer transition on a heterogeneous surface. ETS-10 zeolite is known for its superior adsorption properties and high ion-exchange capacity, making it suitable for applications in adsorption. While the pristine ETS-10 framework possesses inherent acidic sites and a unique crystalline structure, its performance is often limited by its purely microporous nature. This study investigated the modification of ETS-10 using electron beam (EB) irradiation to enhance its capacity for removing Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Our results demonstrated that EB irradiation was a highly effective method for inducing a structural transition from microporous to mesoporous without compromising the structure of ETS-10 zeolite. Under EB irradiation dose of 1000 kGy, the specific surface area of ETS-10 increased to 333 m 2 /g, the pore size expanded to 8 nm, and the adsorption reached 878.16 mg/g for Pb(II) and 181.69 mg/g for Cu(II). The adsorption data for both pristine and irradiated samples were best described by the Sips isotherm model, suggesting a hybrid adsorption behaviour on a heterogeneous surface that transitions from multilayer at low concentrations to monolayer at higher concentrations. Treating titanosilicate ETS-10 with 1000 kGy electron beam (EB) irradiation significantly improved its cyclic reusability across five consecutive adsorption-desorption runs. These findings highlight the potential of EB irradiation as a powerful tool for tailoring the porosity of titanosilicate for advanced environmental remediation. Mn-Modified Biochar Composite for Efficient Adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from Water: Synthesis, Characterization, and Mechanistic Insights

Waqas Ahmed,Yunting Wang,Sehrish Ali,Fengyue Qin,Babar Usman,Weidong Li,Sajid Mehmood

Heavy metal pollution in water threatens ecosystems and human health, necessitating efficient, low-cost, and sustainable remediation technologies. A manganese-modified bamboo biochar (Mn-BC) was synthesized via impregnation of raw biochar in KMnO4followed by pyrolysis at 500 °C, and its adsorption ability was systematically evaluated for Pb(II) and Cr(VI) removal through batch adsorption experiments investigating the effects of solution pH (2–9), adsorbent dosage (0.1–0.9 g in 20 mL), contact time (0–50 min), initial metal concentration (20–100 mg L−1), and temperature (25–50 °C). SEM/TEM-EDS and XRD confirmed successful Mn incorporation as MnOxphases, while textural analysis showed improved porosity after modification, with the BET surface area and total pore volume increasing from 77.28 m2g−1to 123.51 m2g−1and from 0.041 cm3g−1to 0.063 cm3g−1, respectively. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated strong pH dependence, with optimum removal at pH 8 for Pb(II) (91.87%) and pH 5 for Cr(VI) (88.2%). Adsorption was rapid within the first 30 min and reached equilibrium. A pseudo-second-order (PSO) model provided the best kinetic description (R2= 0.99) with calculated qevalues of 19.98 mg g−1for Pb(II) and 19.13 mg g−1for Cr(VI). Isotherm analysis yielded Langmuir monolayer capacities of 37.24 mg g−1(Pb(II)) and 16.39 mg g−1(Cr(VI)), with Pb(II) better described by Freundlich behavior and Cr(VI) closely fitting Langmuir assumptions. Thermodynamic results indicated endothermic adsorption (ΔH° = 41.98 and 29.67 kJ mol−1for Pb(II) and Cr(VI)) and increased interfacial randomness (ΔS°), with adsorption becoming more favorable at higher temperature (maximum removal at 50 °C: 93.21% Pb(II), 87.37% Cr(VI)). Mn-BC maintained >60% efficiency after five regeneration cycles. Mechanistically, Pb(II) removal was primarily governed by ion exchange and surface complexation, whereas Cr(VI) removal involved electrostatic attraction, partial reduction to Cr(III), and subsequent complexation on oxygenated and Mn–O sites. Overall, these findings demonstrate that Mn-BC is a practical, reusable, and competitive adsorbent for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater, supporting sustainable water treatment strategies.

Efficient and selective removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution by modification crofton weed: Experiment and density functional theory calculation

Song Cheng,Baolin Xing,Changliang Shi,Yanhe Nie,Hongying Xia

A low-cost and selective adsorbent (referred to as CC-CCW@DM) is prepared by modifying crofton weed using 1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride to achieve Pb(II) removal. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis results indicate that 1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride is successfully grafted in the crofton weed after modification. The Pb(II) adsorption process is investigated by adsorption isotherm/kinetic models and adsorption thermodynamics. The adsorption kinetic data are well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption equilibrium data can be better described by the Hill and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. The maximum Pb(II) adsorption is 234.60 mg/g at a pH of 5 based on the Hill isotherm model. An adsorption thermodynamic study shows that the Pb(II) adsorption process is spontaneous, with △G 0 values ranging from −25.85 to −32.52 kJ/mol at 298–318 K. CC-CCW@DM has good selectivity for Pb(II) adsorption in wastewater. Recycling experiments show that Pb(II) removal is 93.14% after three cycles. In addition, the adsorption mechanism is systematically studied. The density functional theory calculation results show that there are three ways to combine Pb(II) with N on CC-CCW@DM. In summary, CC-CCW@DM is a selective and reusable adsorbent with a high adsorption capability.

Tunable coordination-responsive metal-phenolic membranes for selective and efficient Pb(II) remediation with low-chemical regenerant in actual wastewaters

Zhanqi Liu,Manyu Zhang,Shuo Wang,Hui Qiu,Yaran Song,Qina Sun,Tifeng Jiao,Qingrui Zhang

Heavy metal contamination in industrial wastewater, particularly lead (Pb(II)), poses significant environmental and health challenges. Conventional membrane technologies, like nanofiltration and ultrafiltration, struggle with selectivity and separation recovery in complex wastewater streams. To address this, we present an advanced metal-phenolic network (MPN) membrane that leverages the tunable coordination chemistry of Tannic Acid (TA) and metal complexes to address these limitations. The TA-MPN membrane demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving 6–15 times higher selectivity for Pb(II) than commercial polyamide membranes, even in the presence of competing ions such as Cd(II), Zn(II), Cr(VI) and Ni(II). In electroplating wastewater applications, the membrane reduces Pb(II) levels to below 0.1 mg/L with a capacity of 80 L/m 2 and removal efficiency exceeding 95 %, meeting stringent GB21900-2008 standards. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits outstanding regenerability, maintaining consistent performance over 10 regeneration cycles using extremely low doses of 0.1 % HCl. An economic analysis reveals a preparation cost of 22.6 USD/m 2 and a treatment cost of 0.227 USD per ton of wastewater, demonstrating its cost-effectiveness. The findings establish the TA-MPN membrane as a scientifically robust solution for selective and cost-effective Pb(II) remediation and recovery, effectively addressing the limitations of conventional membranes while advancing scalable and sustainable technologies for heavy metal treatment.

Simultaneous remediation of As(V), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution and soil using Fe/Ca-modified biochar

Yan Zhou,Wenhui Liu,Dandan Chen,Bangwei Liu,Ping Lu,Yiwei Zhang

A novel Fe/Ca-modified biochar (BC) derived from corn stalk was prepared in this study for the simultaneous adsorption and immobilization of arsenic, cadmium and lead in aqueous solution and soil, respectively. The adsorption experiment in aqueous solution indicated that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited excellent removal efficiency (R, %) towards arsenic (46.3%), cadmium (76.3%) and lead (93.6%). The presence of cadmium and lead could enhance the adsorption efficiency of arsenic by facilitating the formation of ternary complexes with it. Moreover, both cooperative and competitive effects occurred between cadmium and lead adsorption. When the distribution coefficient of cadmium and lead was equimolar, cooperative adsorption prevailed. However, when the distribution coefficient deviated from this balance, competitive adsorption dominated with a higher affinity for lead. The soil culture experiment demonstrated that the utilization of 1Ca-Fe@BC could enhance the stability of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil by enhancing soil cation exchange capacity and pH while reducing dissolved organic carbon. The competitive and cooperative effects of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil were consistent with those found in aqueous solution. The results showed that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited an excellent remediation efficiency for both arsenic, cadmium and lead-contaminated aqueous solution and soil.

Salicylic acid-modified defective NH2-MIL-125/sodium alginate composite aerogel beads for enhanced Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal

Bihe Chen,Ruoshan Yang,Mengyang Li,Yajing Niu,Jinyao Hu,Yingying Wang,Wenzhi Tang,Jingbo Zhou,Zhonghong Li

The threat of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in water demands advanced adsorbents. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated great potential for heavy metal ions adsorption, their microporous nature and powdery form limit practicality. Thus, we engineered a sodium alginate composite aerogel bead loaded with salicylic acid-modified defective NH 2 -MIL-125, for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. By adjusting the solvent volume ratio to regulate the crystal morphology and introducing salicylic acid as a fragmented ligand to compete with NH 2 -BDC to coordinate with Ti-oxo clusters, a defective Ti-MOFs with mesoporous structure (pore size increased from 2.30 to 8.93 nm) and abundant active sites was successfully developed. Further integration with sodium alginate formed millimeter-scale aerogel beads, improving the reusability and enhancing adsorption performance: the maximum adsorption capacities of 428.01 mg g −1 for Pb(II) and 179.67 mg g −1 for Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption process, described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Sips isotherm models, is driven by multilayer chemical adsorption via electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and coordination reactions with −COOH, −NH 2 and −OH groups. The beads also exhibit excellent selectivity and reusability, maintaining high efficiency of ∼97 % for Pb(II) over 5 cycles. This work provides a promising strategy for designing high-performance and recyclable adsorbents for adsorbing heavy metal ions from water.

Co-transport of Pb(II) and oxygen-content-controllable graphene oxide from electron-beam-irradiated graphite in saturated porous media

Yanji Jiang,Xianqiang Yin,Duo Guan,Tao Jing,Huimin Sun,Nong Wang,Jing Bai

It is essential to investigate the role of the surface oxygen content of graphene oxide (GO) in transport processes. In this study, GO was prepared using flake graphite with different radiation doses. The effects of the flow rate and ionic strength (IS) on the migration and co-transport of GO and Pb(II) ions were investigated via laboratory packed-column experiments. The experimental results showed that the mobility of GO in saturated porous media decreased with increasing flow rate. Further, the mobility of GO with a radiation dose of 18 kGy was lower than that of GOs with other radiation doses for an IS below 0.01 M. Regarding the co-transport of irradiated GO and Pb(II) in porous media, the greater the radiation dose, the stronger was the ability of GO to promote Pb(II) transport. The surface oxygen content promoted the ability of GO to remove Pb(II). However, radiation doses exceeding a certain range inhibited the release of Pb(II). The transport of GO in saturated porous media was successfully simulated with the advection–dispersion–reaction (ADR) equation. This study is expected to provide a new perspective on the potential risks of GO due to surface changes during its transport in the environment.

Hydrazinolyzed cellulose-g-polymethyl acrylate as adsorbent for efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution

Jia Qiujin,Zhang Wanting,Li Dongping,Liu Yulong,Che Yuju,Ma Qinglin,Meng Fanjun

Hydrazinolyzed cellulose-graft-polymethyl acrylate (Cell-g-PMA-HZ), an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution, has been prepared by ceric salt-initiated graft polymerization of methyl acrylate from microcrystalline cellulose surface and subsequent hydrazinolysis. The influences of initial pH, contact time, and temperature on adsorption capacity of Cell-g-PMA-HZ as well as adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic properties were examined in detail. As for Cd(II) adsorption, kinetic adsorption can be explained by pseudo-second-order, while adsorption isotherm fits well with Langmuir isotherm model, from which maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity can be derived as 235.85 mg g −1 at 28 °C. Further thermodynamic investigation indicated that adsorption of Cd(II) by adsorbent Cell-g-PMA-HZ is endothermic and spontaneous under studied conditions. On the other hand, isotherm of Pb(II) adsorption fits well with Freundlich isotherm model and is more likely to be a physical-adsorption-dominated process. Consecutive adsorption–desorption experiments showed that Cell-g-PMA-HZ is reusable with satisfactory adsorption capacity.

A New 3D Pb(II) Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Framework Based on Terephthalate Acid with the Inorganic Pb–O–Pb Connectivity

Wu Kai-Fei,Jiang Fen,Bai Xian-Li,Mo Shao-Yin,Qin Gui-Fang,Feng Yu

Solvothermal reaction of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 with terephthalate acid afforded one new inorganic–organic hybrid framework, [Pb(PBDC)] n ( 1 ) (H 2 PBDC = terephthalic acid). X-ray analysis shows that compound 1 crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Pbca and the two carboxy group of terephthalate acid adopt rare coordination modes. A noticeable point in this paper that compound 1 exhibits preferable catalytic property on degradation of Rhodamine B. The phase purity of the as-synthesized sample was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Moreover, satisfactory elemental analysis, IR spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis were obtained.

Utilization of Waste Amine-Oxime (WAO) Resin to Generate Carbon by Microwave and Its Removal of Pb(II) in Water

Chunlin He,Yun Liu,Chunhui Zheng,Yanming Jiang,Yan Liao,Jiaxin Huang,Toyohisa Fujita,Yuezhou Wei,Shaojian Ma

Utilising waste amine-oxime (WAO) resin through microwave semi-carbonization, a carbon adsorbent (CA) was obtained to remove Pb(II). After microwave treatment, the pore size of the skeleton structure, three-dimensional porous network, and lamellar pore structure of WAO was improved. The distribution coefficient (Kd) of Pb(II) onto CA is 620 mL/g, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) is 82.67 mg/g after 20 min of WAO microwave treatment. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms conform to the quasi-second-order kinetic equation and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, respectively. The surface of MT-WAO is negatively charged and the adsorption mechanism is mainly electrostatic interaction. Pb(II) elution in hydrochloric acid solution is more than 98%, and its recovery is high at 318 K and for 1 h.

Efficient Adsorption and Recovery of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solution by a Granular pH-Sensitive Chitosan-based Semi-IPN Hydrogel

Dajian Huang,Wenbo Wang,Yuru Kang,Aiqin Wang

A series of granular pH-sensitive semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogels based on chitosan (CTS), acrylic acid (AA) and gelatine (GE) were utilized for the adsorption and recycle of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The composite hydrogels have been characterized by FT-IR and TGA. The effects of contact time, pH value and initial Pb(II) concentration on the adsorption were investigated. Results indicated that the adsorption capacity of the hydrogel increased with increasing pH value and initial Pb(II) concentration, and a pH-sensitive adsorption characteristic was presented. The adsorption rate of the semi-IPN hydrogels on Pb(II) is fast with an adsorption rate constant of 14.9790 mg/(g·s), and adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 10 min. The adsorption isotherms of the hydrogels for Pb(II) could be described well by the Langmuir equation, rather than the Freundlich equation. The as-prepared hydrogels showed good reusability with 0.05 mol/l HNO3 solutions as the desorbing agent and 0.1 mol/l NaOH solutions as the regeneration agent, respectively. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption processes, the semi-IPN hydrogel with 20 wt% GE may reach 85.26% of its initial adsorption capacity. In addition, the adsorbed Pb(II) can be quantitatively recovered by simply eluting the hydrogel with dilute HNO3 solution, and a recovery ratio of 89.27% was reached for the semi-IPN hydrogel. The satisfactory adsorption amount is mainly derived from the chelating of functional groups (i.e. –COO− and –NH2) with Pb(II) ions. The hydrogel adsorbents exhibited excellent affinity for Pb(II), and can be applied to treat wastewater containing heavy metal ion and simultaneously recover the valuable metal sources.
