Design and synthesis of Hollow Sea-urchin-like TiO2@CdS Photocatalysts for visible-light-driven degradation of antibiotics in wastewater

Zhenghao Li,Sheng Xu,Yihua Zhang,Lingli Liu,Jinlong Cui,Zhenxi Wang

To enhance the visible-light catalytic activity and broaden the light absorption range of TiO 2 , a series of three-dimensional hollow sea-urchin-like TiO 2 @CdS composite photocatalysts were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The microstructure and photoelectrochemical properties of the synthesized TiO 2 @CdS composites were systematically characterized by multiple techniques. The scanning electron microscopy results showed that the pure TiO 2 present the hollow sea-urchin-like structure and the overall morphology of the TiO 2 @CdS composite material is hardly changed. PL results showed that the introduction of CdS quantum dots to TiO 2 matrix to form a heterojunction can effectively improve its photoelectron transfer efficiency and enhance electron-hole separation. The UV–vis results indicated that the introduction of CdS QDs significantly enhanced the visible-light absorption of TiO 2 . The performance for the visible-light-driven degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) was systematically investigated. The results showed that the TCH degradation efficiency reached 83.71 % within 1 h of visible-light irradiation and further improved to 93.59 % after 3 h. Moreover, the degradation rate was markedly accelerated under alkaline conditions and the degradation rate can reach 96.82 %. After five consecutive cycles, the TiO 2 @CdS composites exhibited negligible loss in photocatalytic activity, confirming their excellent visible-light catalytic degradation performance and outstanding reusability.

Emulsion electrospun polylactic acid/Apocynum venetum nanocellulose nanofiber membranes with controlled sea buckthorn extract release as a drug delivery system

Lu Wang,Chenmeizi Wang,Ling Wang,Qingle Zhang,Ying Wang,Xin Xia

Prolonging the duration of drug action and reducing toxicity play a vital role in wound administration as they reduce the chance of infection and decrease complications and cost. This study reports the natural antioxidant procyanidins extracted from sea buckthorn (SBT) and laboratory-manufactured Apocynum venetum cellulose nanofiber as core drugs. The sustained-release nanofiber membrane was prepared by electrospinning on polylactic acid/polyvinyl pyrrolidone nanofibers. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to identify the phenolic compounds in SBT extracts and confirmed the presence of procyanidins with a content of 0.0345 mg/g. The nanofiber membrane was characterized through transmission electron microscopy, encapsulation efficiency, in vitro drug-release study and antioxidant assay. The results indicated that the extracted procyanidins were successfully encapsulated in the core–sheath structure nanofibers, and the encapsulation efficiency of nanofiber membranes reached 83.84%. In vitro measurements of the delivery showed this core–sheath structure could significantly alleviate the drug burst release, which is followed by a linear and smooth release within 30 hours. Further tests showed that the removal efficiency of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl reached 88.62%, indicating that the membranes had high antioxidant activity. This work implies that the combination of Apocynum venetum nanocellulose and emulsion electrospun fibers has promising potential applications in tissue engineering or drug delivery.

Development of edible composite film based on chitosan nanoparticles and their application in packaging of fresh red sea bream fillets

Ran Zhao,Weiliang Guan,Pingan Zheng,Fang Tian,Zhenzhe Zhang,Zhidong Sun,Luyun Cai

This research was conducted to assess the structure, mechanical, barrier and optical properties of three edible composite films based on chitosan nanoparticles. Films containing cinnamon-perilla essential oil (C-PEO) Pickering nanoemulsion had denser structure and better mechanical properties. In addition, films with anthocyanidins exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity . The results showed that both Pickering nanoemulsion and anthocyanidins could improve some properties of edible composite film based on chitosan nanoparticles. Finally, preservation experiments were carried out. Analysis of storage quality indices (sensory evaluation, microbiological analyses, pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid values, color and texture) revealed the shelf life of fillets wrapped in three kinds of composite film was extended to 6–8 days. The preservation effect of plant essential oil compound anthocyanidin edible film for fillet was the best and anthocyanidins compound chitosan nanoparticles edible film was the best in appearance of protection.

Application of Gelatin/Chitosan Films Loaded with Seaweed Extract of Ready-to-Eat Sea Cucumbers Preservation During Ambient-Temperature Storage

Yingying Zhou,Yumeng Wei,Jingyi Huo,Lijuan Xu,Meng Li,Soottawat Benjakul,Xinru Fan

Achieving ambient temperature storage of ready-to-eat sea cucumber (RTE-SC) remains a critical scientific challenge that urgently needs to be addressed in the industry. Recently, bioactive packaging materials have been increasingly applied in the aquatic product preservation, demonstrating their effectiveness in enhancing storage stability and extending the shelf-life. In this study, Seaweed extract (SE) was employed as a functional and bioactive component to fabricate gelatin/chitosan composite films (G-C–SE), and the preservative efficacy of the prepared films was systematically evaluated on ready-to-eat sea cucumber (RTE-SC) under ambient temperature storage. The SE was prepared and characterized in terms of extraction yield, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content, all of which confirmed its satisfactory in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The experimental results demonstrated that extraction using 60% (v/v) ethanol solvent yielded the most favorable outcomes, exhibiting satisfactory antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Subsequently, the characterization and other physicochemical properties revealed that the incorporation of SE effectively facilitated the hydrogen-bonding interactions and improved the mechanical strength, barrier performance, and thermal stability of composite film matrix. When applied to the preservation of RTE-SC, the G-C–SE films exhibited remarkable quality-regulating effects. After 5 days storage, compared with the control group (CON), the protection of G3.3:C0.2−0.5% film (containing 3.3 wt% gelatin, 0.2% wt% chitosan, and 0.5 wt%L. japonicaextract) resulted in a 26.07% reduction in the TCA-soluble oligopeptides content, a 10.39-fold decrease in glycosaminoglycan release, and an 11.28-fold suppression of TBARS elevation. Additionally, this treatment effectively retarded the rise in TVB-N accumulation, delayed textural deterioration, and maintained superior visual appearance throughout the storage period. These findings demonstrate that the G-C–SE composite film, as an active packaging material, can significantly mitigate the quality degradation of RTE-SC during ambient temperature storage, thereby providing a promising technological strategy for the application of bioactive films in aquatic food preservation.

In situ deep-sea surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor reveals cyanide as a key factor in cold seep nitrogen cycling

Siyu Wang,Tingting Zhao,Wanying He,Fei Li,Zhicheng Wang,Ruhao Pan,Lianfu Li,Shichuan Xi,Zhendong Luan,Zhiyang Zhang,Bowei Li,Lingxin Chen,Xin Zhang

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, typical ecosystems characterized by abundant carbon but limited nitrogen, support thriving microbial activities. The source of nitrogen has long been a key focus in scientific research. Although cultivation experiments have confirmed the presence of diverse nitrogen-fixing microorganisms, direct in situ evidence has been lacking. Therefore, a deep-sea in situ surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor has been developed. It can adapt to extreme environment (≥350°C and ≥2000-m depth and LOD < 10 −7 M) and has excellent deep-sea application potential. Crucially, the sensor achieved the in situ detection of cyanide (-CN) (>5.7 μM) at cold seep, providing direct evidence for an energy-efficient nitrogen fixation pathway in the microbial communities. Concurrently, the gradient detection results indicated that CN was consumed as a microbial “circulating currency.” This finding offers critical in situ evidence for understanding the coupling mechanisms of cold seep carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles, marking a substantial breakthrough in deep-sea sensing technology.

Medium-chain substrate preference of lipases from a novel deep-sea halotolerant bacterium revealed by enzymatic assays and molecular docking

Tian Tian,Lijia Jiang,Dongfeng Zhao,Hao Yu,Lingbo Jiang,Jian Wang,Yiying Shuai,Zhongjun Ma,Yanhong Li,Chunfang Zhang

Extracellular lipase from salt-tolerant strain Salegentibacter sp. was isolated and purified. • The lipase exhibited stability under high salinity (up to 4.5 M NaCl) and alkaline conditions (pH 11). • Substrate specificity revealed a preference for medium-chain fatty acids. • Molecular docking identified key residues mediating efficient binding of medium-chain substrates Lipases from halotolerant bacteria represent promising biocatalysts for industrial applications due to their stability under extreme conditions. In this study, a halotolerant strain Salegentibacter sp. MHS1–6 was isolated from Western Pacific deep-sea sediments, and its lipase was characterized for the first time. The crude enzyme was first precipitated with 60% ammonium sulfate and then purified by Superdex 200 Increase. The final purified enzyme exhibited a specific activity of 187.4 ± 11.8 U/mg and a recovery yield of 24.7 ± 1.8%. Enzymatic characterization showed that the lipase retained high activity in 4.5 mol/L NaCl and at pH 11, revealing substantial tolerance to combined salinity and alkaline stress. Substrate specificity analysis showed a distinct preference for medium-chain substrates, including tricaprylin and p -nitrophenyl caprylate. Molecular docking provided preliminary insights into the potential structural basis of this chain-length preference, suggesting that C8–C10 acyl chains may form relatively favorable hydrogen-bonding and hydrophobic contacts within the catalytic pocket. This work presents the first detailed characterization of a deep-sea lipase, highlighting its potential for biocatalysis in high-salt and alkaline environments. While the precise catalytic mechanism requires further validation, its robust properties make it a promising candidate for industrial processes that demand exceptional stability. Highly efficient sea urchin-like N-doped CuCo bimetallic catalyst for selective cleavage of α-O-4 linkage in lignin

Feng Chen,Xiang Xia,Wei Chen,Wei Liu,Xinxin Liao,Lei Xiong,Yanqiao Jin

Refining lignin and its derivatives into biofuels and fine chemicals via catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) has gained significant attention for its potential in utilizing renewable resources and reducing fossil fuel dependence. Herein, a series of bimetallic Cu-Co catalysts with varying metal ratios are synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and successfully applied in the efficient CTH of the α-O−4 model compound benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) and corncob lignin. Cu 0.5 Co 1 @CN has the best performance among catalysts with different CuCo ratios due to the formation of the CuCo 2 O 4 phase which provides more acid sites and hydrogen adsorption/desorption sites. Under the reaction conditions of 190 °C in isopropanol, the Cu 0.5 Co 1 @CN catalyst achieves the complete conversion of BPE to cyclohexanol and toluene, and demonstrates excellent CTH performance towards other α-O−4 and β-O−4 model compounds. This catalyst simultaneously enables the demethoxylation and hydrogenation of phenolic compounds like guaiacol. Furthermore, Cu 0.5 Co 1 @CN efficiently converts corncob lignin, producing a high proportion of phenolic compounds in the resulting liquid (88.26%), while preventing the aromatic hydrocarbons from being hydrogenated. Overall, this work provides a novel and effective strategy for transforming lignin into high-value products.

Closed-Loop Square-Wave Anodic Stripping Voltammetric Analyzer for In Situ Monitoring of Labile Trace Metals in Deep-Sea Environments

Feng Zhang,Rui Wang,Jian Zhang,Bo Jin,Chen Li,Zihan Yang,Dejun Li,Yun Chen,Minhui Zheng,Chenhua Han

Reliable in situ quantification of trace metals in the deep ocean is critically important for understanding marine biogeochemical cycles, yet remains analytically challenging due to extreme hydrostatic pressure, large temperature gradients, low analyte concentrations, and severe matrix interferences. Here, we report a closed-loop square-wave anodic stripping voltammetric (SWASV) analyzer that integrates microelectrode-array sensing, environmental regulation, and signal-stability feedback to enable quantitative trace-metal measurements under deep-sea conditions. The system combines MEMS-fabricated iridium microelectrode arrays with an in situ renewable mercury film, active dissolved-oxygen removal, temperature-normalized signal correction, and background-subtracted voltammetry, forming a closed-loop analytical workflow that continuously monitors and compensates for environmental and instrumental perturbations. Under simulated deep-sea conditions, temperature-induced signal deviations exceeding 50% were reduced to within ±10–15%, while baseline noise and drift were effectively suppressed. The analyzer was subsequently deployed during two deep-sea cruises in the western Pacific, where in situ concentrations of Zn(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) were quantified at depths up to 1800 m. Independent validation against inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) showed good agreement, with deviations generally within ±15%. These results demonstrate that closed-loop electrochemical regulation provides a robust pathway toward long-term, unattended, and quantitative electrochemical observations in extreme marine environments.

Effects of nitrite exposure on oxidative stress immune response and apoptosis in sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicus) during simulated live transport

Wang Jingjing,Guo Meijie,Mei Jun,Xie Jing

Nitrite is a prevalent environmental contaminant in the natural water domain and poses a significant threat to fish populations due to its toxic effects. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of nitrite concentration on cell apoptosis, oxidation reaction mechanism, and immune pathway of sea bass during simulated live transport. Fish were exposed to nitrite concentrations of 0, 15.05, and 30.11 mg/L for 48 h, respectively. Blood and liver samples were collected at intervals of 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, R12, and R24 h post-exposure to assess hematological parameters, oxidative stress indicators, immunological enzyme activities, and gene expression levels. The results indicated that the nitrite-exposed group had lower serum levels of LZM and IgM compared to the CK group. The SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px enzyme activities were significantly elevated in the livers of the nitrite-exposed group ( p  < 0.05). The mRNA expression level of Nrf2 was upregulated in the nitrite-exposed group, while Keap1 was downregulated. The mRNA relative expression levels of NF-κB , TLR-3 , and TNF-α in the immune pathway were upregulated in the nitrite-exposed group. The mRNA expression of the apoptosis gene P53 was upregulated with increased nitrite concentration, along with the upregulation of the apoptosis-promoting gene Bax and the downregulation of the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl2 . The mRNA expression of Caspase 3 and Caspase 9 genes in sea bass was significantly increased in the nitrite-exposed group ( p  < 0.05). In conclusion, sea bass exposed to nitrite not only showed abnormal changes in serum composition but also showed oxidative stress, apoptosis, and liver tissue damage, highlighting the multifaceted impacts of nitrite exposure on aquatic biology. Structural and Functional Insights into a Novel Aspergillus ochraceus Polysaccharide from the Weddell Sea: Implications for Melanoma Immunotherapy In Vitro

Jiale Hao,Kouame kra Wilfred Armel,Pengcheng Gao,Jinglei Wang,Weibin Zhang,Kexin Du,Qi Li,Huishu Gao,Guangli Yu,Guoyun Li

Immunotherapy is a transformative strategy in oncology, yet the development of novel immunomodulatory agents remains essential. This study explores the anti-tumor potential of a structurally unique polysaccharide isolated from anAspergillus ochraceus(AOP), sourced from the Antarctic Weddell Sea. Using alkaline-assisted extraction and chromatographic purification, we obtained a homogeneous polysaccharide predominantly composed of galactose and mannose, with an average molecular weight of 39.67 kDa. The structure was characterized by an integrated nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry analysis, revealing that the AOP is composed of β (1→5)-linked galactofuranose units, with a minor substitution by α-D-mannopyranose residues via (1→2) glycosidic bonds at the C2 of the galactofuranose. Functional assays, including CCK8 and wound-healing tests, demonstrated that this polysaccharide, referred to as AOP, inhibited melanoma cell proliferation and migration in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, the AOP activated RAW264.7 and bone marrow-derived macrophage (BMDM) cells without exhibiting significant cytotoxicity, leading to the release of inflammatory factors such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. Mechanistically, the AOP was found to upregulate the expression of CD86 and IFN-γ, while downregulating genes like IL-4 and Arg1. These findings position the AOP as the first documented Antarctic fungal polysaccharide with macrophage-reprogramming capabilities against melanoma, offering novel molecular insights for marine-derived immunotherapeutics.

Ammonium alginate and cellulose nanofiber-based sea anemone tentacle-inspired colorimetric gas-sensitive aerogel enabling ultra-sensitive ammonia visual detection

Yanghang Liu,Lizhi Wang,Zirun Zhan,Yu Jiang,Xun Zhang,Yunhe Li,Xin Zhong,Dan Yu,Wei Wang

Real-time visual detection of ammonia (NH₃) is crucial for environmental safety and food quality, yet traditional sensors often suffer from slow response, poor selectivity, and limited adaptability. Here, we innovatively report an ammonium alginate (AL) and cellulose nanofiber-based colorimetric aerogel (APPC aerogel) with a sea anemone-inspired structure for rapid, sensitive, and reversible NH₃ detection. The aerogel is prepared by embedding a sulfonated indole photoacid (PMU H) into a matrix of AL, cellulose nanofibers (CNF), and phytic acid (PA), cast into a 3D-printed template, and directionally frozen to form an ordered porous bionic structure. Upon NH₃ exposure, PMU-H undergoes fast, reversible proton transfer and enol-keto tautomerization, producing a color change from yellow to purplish-red within 5 s. The aerogel shows a detection limit of 0.65 ppm, a linear range of 1–250 ppm, and maintains performance over 50 cycles. FTIR and DFT analyses reveal the sensing mechanism. The material remains stable under humidity, temperature variations, and complex gases, enabling effective visual monitoring of NH₃ during seafood spoilage and offering promise for food packaging, environmental monitoring, and safety applications.

Carvacrol-loaded emulsions stabilized by soy protein isolate/chitosan oligosaccharide conjugates improved the quality of refrigerated sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus)

Jiaxin Zhao,Weiqing Lan,Jing Xie

In this study, the soybean protein isolate / chitosan oligosaccharide (SPI/COS) conjugates were developed using glycosylation and used as a stabilizer of carvacrol-loaded emulsions for refrigerating sea bass ( Lateolabrax maculatus ). The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy showed that COS modified the secondary and tertiary structure of SPI by covalent binding. The SPI/COS conjugate with a mass ratio of SPI and COS of 4:1 (SPI/COS-4) exhibited high glycosylation degree, great water solubility and better emulsification properties. Carvacrol-loaded emulsion stabilized by the SPI/COS-4 (CE-SPI/COS-4) had nanoscale droplet size and remained stable during 40 days of storage. SPI/COS-4 aqueous solution (SPI/COS) and CE-SPI/COS-4 aqueous solution (CE-SPI/COS) in the form of immersion were applied to investigate their preservation effects on sea bass, with sterile water as control check (CK). Sea bass were stored at 4 °C and quality assessments of fish were performed periodically for up to 21 days, which included microbiological and physicochemical analysis. As suggested by microbiological analysis, CE-SPI/COS treatment could significantly inhibit the bacterial growth. The low total volatile basic nitrogen value, thiobarbituric acid value and K-value indicated that CE-SPI/COS greatly retarded protein and lipid oxidation in fish and significantly suppress the degradation of nucleotide. Moreover, fish treated with CE-SPI/COS had minimal color variation and water loss, and maintained hardness, adhesiveness, chewiness, and resilience of fish to the highest degree. Therefore, emulsions stabilized with SPI/COS conjugates may be employed as a potential strategy for the quality maintenance of sea bass.
