Recently, hybrid plasmonic metal/semiconductor-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has attracted ever-increasing attention due to its combined characteristics of electromagnetic (EM) enhancement and chemical (CM) enhancement, holding great potential for trace molecular detection. Herein, we demonstrate an interesting heterostructure by linking Cu2O nano-octahedrons with intertwined Ag nanovines (NVs). The obtained Ag NVs/Cu2O heterostructures exhibit excellent SERS activity, which is about 2.7 and 7.0 times higher than that of monodispersed Ag or Au nanoparticles (NPs) modified Cu2O. The intertwined Ag NVs among adjacent Cu2O octahedrons serve as efficient electron transport channels, which can obviously promote the separation of electrons and holes, reduce the recombination of photogenerated carriers, and then improve the CM enhancement effect. Meanwhile, the accumulated electrons on plasmonic NVs can effectively optimize the collective oscillation of electrons and further improve the EM enhancement. The optimal SERS substrate possesses fascinating multifunctional SERS properties, including ultra-low detection limit (CV, 10−14 M), excellent anti-interference capability and selectivity. Finally, the established nanosensor can be effectively applied for the quantitative detection of pesticide thiram molecules in soil and biological samples, with low detection limits of 0.48 ng g−1 and 10−7 M, respectively. The proposed work demonstrates a high-performance SERS heterostructure with both improved CM enhancement and enhanced EM effect by linking adjacent Cu2O nano-octahedrons with Ag NVs, which is particularly suitable for ultrasensitive residual pesticide detection in real-world environment.

TiN–Ag@Ag composite substrates were prepared via ammonia reduction nitridation followed by electrochemical deposition. Fabricated TiN–Ag@Ag substrates were characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy activity of these substrates was evaluated using ibuprofen as the probe molecule. The size of the Ag particles prepared via electrochemical deposition was approximately 1 μm, and Ag nanoparticles with an average particle size of 100 nm were uniformly distributed on the surface of TiN–Ag films. The Raman signal of ibuprofen was significantly enhanced, and the minimum detection concentration of ibuprofen was 10 –5 M. The mechanism by which the TiN–Ag@Ag composite substrate enhanced the Raman signals was analyzed using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory implemented in the Gaussian software. Overall, charge transfer and the local electromagnetic field effect enhanced the Raman signals of ibuprofen.

A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method for measuring nitrate nitrogen in aquaculture water was developed using a substrate of β-cyclodextrin-modified gold nanoparticles (SH-β-CD@AuNPs). Addressing the issues of low sensitivity, narrow linear range, and relatively poor selectivity of single metal nanoparticles in the SERS detection of nitrate nitrogen, we combined metal nanoparticles with cyclodextrin supramolecular compounds to prepare a AuNPs substrate enveloped by cyclodextrin, which exhibits ultra-high selectivity and Raman activity. Subsequently, vanadium(III) chloride was used to convert nitrate ions into nitrite ions. The adsorption mechanism between the reaction product benzotriazole (BTAH) of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and nitrite ions on the SH-β-CD@AuNPs substrate was studied through SERS, achieving the simultaneous detection of nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen. The experimental results show that BTAH exhibits distinct SERS characteristic peaks at 1168, 1240, 1375, and 1600 cm−1, with the lowest detection limits of 3.33 × 10−2, 5.84 × 10−2, 2.40 × 10−2, and 1.05 × 10−2μmol/L, respectively, and a linear range of 0.1–30.0 μmol/L. The proposed method provides an effective tool for the selective and accurate online detection of nitrite and nitrate nitrogen in aquaculture water.

The authors report on a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanoprobe for the specific detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 ( E. coli O157:H7). Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were coated with a thick silica shell, and the Raman reporter (4,4′-dipyridyl) was embedded between gold nanoparticle and silica shell. This technique prevents any external effects on the AuNPs from the environment and avoids any interaction between the Raman reporter and possible impurities. Compared to the SERS nanoprobe of the conventional AuNP/AgNP type, the present nanoprobe can be applied in complex biochemical circumstances without aggregation because of its excellent stability. The SERS nanoprobeis stable for up to 50 h. The probe was applied to the SERS detection of E. coli O157:H7 by exploiting the Raman band peaking at 1612 cm −1 of 4,4′-dipyridyl (DP). The limit of detection is as low as 10 CFU·mL −1 . The technique was successfully employed to the detection of E. coli O157:H7 in real samples, achieving recoveries between 95.5 and 114.8%.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has great potential for the detection of marine pollutants, but it is still restricted in ultra-trace and quantitative analysis. Here, a strategy for the detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was proposed based on Au nanoscale convex polyhedrons (Au NCPs) coated with high-energy facets and embedded with 4-ATP as a probe molecule. Au NCPs acted as SERS substrates and led to limits of detection (LODs) for six common PAHs that reached 0.01 nM. Using internal calibration, the relative standard deviations (RSD) of the spectral stability and reproducibility were as low as 3.36% and 5.11%, respectively. The maximum mean relative errors (AREs) of the predicted and true values were 6.28%. The results indicate that the resulting Au NCPs improved the ultra-trace and quantitative detection of SERS, thus suggesting that the Au NCPs have practical application value in SERS.

The study of the interaction between small molecules and proteins is important. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is suitable for such applications since it has the power of detecting a molecule based on its intrinsic nature and without labeling. Herein, the [email protected] SERS substrate supporting highly reflective metal liquid-like films (MeLLFs) with polyacrylamide hydrogels (PAAG) has high-density “hot spots” to provide excellent SERS activity. The [email protected] formed by AgNPs only has less than 15% SERS activity loss when stored in the air for more than three weeks. By using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a model analyte , the AgNPs based [email protected] SERS substrate exhibits an enhancement factor (EF) as high as 8.0 × 10 6 , a limit of detection (LOD) of 76.8 pM (S/N = 3). Also, the formed PAAG provided a 3D molecular network to orderly secure the assembled nanoparticles (NPs), which not only improves the stability of NPs but also shields the Raman signal of proteins as high as 45 g/L allowing the direct determination of the binding rate of human serum albumin (HSA) and doxorubicin (DOX). A binding rate of about 70% was detected, which is consistent with previous reports. Thus, proposed the [email protected] SERS substrate can be used as a promising candidate for SERS measurement in complex biological samples.

Background Folate is an essential nutrient, but its bioavailability varies greatly depending on the molecular form present in food. The intake of forms that are not readily absorbed by the human body may lead to insufficient folate levels, particularly during pregnancy, thereby increasing the risk of birth defects. As a result, it is essential to develop a highly sensitive and accurate method capable of distinguishing between the two most common natural folates, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) and 5-formyltetrahydrofolate (5-FTHF), to ensure proper folate intake and health outcomes. Results In this study, a photochemical method was employed to load gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs), successfully synthesizing CNTs@Au NPs nanocomposites that exhibit excellent thermal stability and robust surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. These nanocomposites, capable of maintaining structural integrity at temperatures as high as 400 °C, serve as highly effective substrates for in situ high-temperature SERS detection. Using this reliable high-temperature-assisted SERS approach, the structural changes of both folates at elevated temperatures were effectively monitored, enabling clear molecular fingerprinting and distinct differentiation between the two natural folates. Moreover, the CNTs@Au NPs demonstrate exceptional sensitivity, achieving a detection limit as low as 10 -8 M for both 5-MTHF and 5-FTHF, enabling accurate quantification of mixed folate samples and demonstrating reliable performance in real sample analysis. Significance The CNTs@Au NPs with in situ high-temperature SERS capabilities show great potential for various analytical applications. In particular, they provide an effective method for monitoring the quality of folate in dietary supplements and fortified foods, thus contributing significantly to the safety and quality assurance of folate products in the market.

Wearable sensors are essential for continuous monitoring of an individual’s health status to enable personalized health management. Urine as a typical non-invasive biological fluid is rich in biological information. Although diaper-based biosensors have been developed, the development of wearable sensors for multiple biomarkers in urine remains a major challenge to be explored. In this paper, a hydrogel SERS sensor consisting of two metal nanostructures of silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and silver nanocubes (Ag NCs) was developed and adhered to nappies to form a wearable nappy-based SERS sensor for the rapid and sensitive detection of bio markers (creatinine, uric acid and bilirubin) and pH in urine. The hydrogel’s excellent adsorption and water-locking properties greatly simplify the collection of urine samples. At the same time, its encapsulation effect can effectively maintain the freshness of the urine sample and ensure the accuracy of the test. The introduction of silver nano dual-structure improves the antimicrobial properties of the hydrogel and reduces the risk of infection when the sensor comes into contact with the skin. Moreover, the silver nano dual-structure triggers abundant electromagnetic “hot spots” around intersecting nanojunctions and gaps, which greatly improves SERS sensitivity. For the detection of creatinine, uric acid and bilirubin, the LODs were as low as 0.59 μM, 69 nM, 89 nM. Finally, the urine pH was accurately detected using a functionalized Ag NWs-Ag NCs/CCNF/Gel/PVA hydrogel. This wearable diaper sensor is expected to be used for personal health condition monitoring and holds great promise for effective care of infants, the elderly, and those with limited mobility.

A novel method for reliable on-site characterization of aromatic compounds adsorbed on porous particles with surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in a dynamic adsorption-hydrocyclone separation process (DAHS) was introduced. Aromatic compounds found in printing and dyeing wastewater were adsorbed on functionalized porous alumina particles (FPAPs). The SERS-active FPAPs were prepared by decorating and growing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs, ∼70 nm diameter) on the surface of porous alumina particles (PAPs). Samples were then characterized with a portable Raman spectrometer. SERS offers quantitative analyses of the pollutants adsorbed on the surface of FPAPs directly and the quantity of benzidine adsorbed on porous particles was 20.5 mg kg−1. It shows that the SERS-DAHS technique could be readily applied to the quantitative characterization of aromatic compounds adsorbed on SERS-active FPAPs. Furthermore, both qualitative and quantitative detection of aromatic compounds in wastewater produced on-site were readily accomplished using the SERS-DAHS method and its analytical ability compares well with GC-MS and the detection results deviating between these two techniques was less than 10%. The results demonstrate that the SERS-DAHS method is straightforward, rapid, and preferable for the real-time detection and quantitative characterization of aromatic compounds/pollutants adsorbed on porous materials.

The development of powerful technologies to simultaneously monitor and eliminate toxic organic pollutants is a vital focus of environmental research. For this purpose, a recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was successfully prepared by successively depositing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film on TiO2 microflower particles by two-step in situ reduction processes. The prepared TiO2@Au-rGO ternary composites exhibit not only good SERS performance via molecule enrichment of rGO and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) capability, but also enhanced photocatalytic degradation activity because of the increased broadband UV–visible-light-harvesting efficiency and SPR-enhanced charge transfer. The detection limit of rhodamine 6G (R6G) as low as 10–11 M and excellent reproducibility were achieved. Additionally, the TiO2@Au-rGO ternary composites yield complete removal of R6G within 15 min under broadband UV–visible light illumination, wherein their apparent reaction-rate constant is 2.8 and 5.5 times larger than those of binary TiO2@Au and pure TiO2, respectively. Meanwhile, no distinct SERS and photocatalytic activity loss were observed even after five reusability tests, achieving the recycling SERS application by photocatalytic degradation. Most importantly, the as-fabricated ternary samples can be explored for the efficient capture, sensitive detection, and self-cleaning degradation of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), revealing great potential applications in the SERS-based simultaneous monitoring and removal of trace aromatic persistent organic pollutants.

In this research, a method was developed for fabricating Au–Au nanorod array substrates through the deposition of large-area Au nanostructures on an Au nanorod array using a galvanic cell reaction. The incorporation of a granular structure enhanced both the number and intensity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) hot spots on the substrate, thereby elevating the SERS performance beyond that of substrates composed solely of an Au nanorod. Calculations using the finite difference time domain method confirmed the generation of a strong electromagnetic field around the nanoparticles. Motivated by the electromotive force, Au ions in the chloroauric acid solution were reduced to form nanostructures on the nanorod array. The size and distribution density of these granular nanostructures could be modulated by varying the reaction time and the concentration of chloroauric acid. The resulting Au–Au nanorod array substrate exhibited an active, uniform, and reproducible SERS effect. With 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene as the probe molecule, the detection sensitivity of the Au–Au nanorod array substrate was enhanced to 10−11M, improving by five orders of magnitude over the substrate consisting only of an Au nanorod array. For a practical application, this substrate was utilized for the detection of pesticides, including thiram, thiabendazole, carbendazim, and phosmet, within the concentration range of 10−4to 5 × 10−7M. An analytical model combining a random forest and a one-dimensional convolutional neural network, referring to the important variable-one-dimensional convolutional neural network model, was developed for the precise identification of thiram. This approach demonstrated significant potential for biochemical sensing and rapid on-site identification.

The development of a rapid and accurate assay for the detection of biothiols is critical for early diagnosis and prevention of diseases. Herein, we report that the preparation of photoinduced defective MIL-100-NH 2 (PID-MIL-100-NH 2 ) with oxygen vacancy defects as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate by high-energy light irradiation. The substrate exhibited excellent SERS activity to Cys, Hcy and GSH with limits of detection (LODs) as low as 30, 23 and 18 nM, respectively, notably lowering the detectable concentration by at least 10 5 times compared to the Au NP substrate. Such superior SERS activity is attributed to the energy level matching of the PID-MIL-100-NH 2 substrate and the biothiol molecules, which results in efficient multiple charge-transfer resonances, such as photoinduced charge-transfer (PICT), ground-state charge-transfer (GSCT), and exciton resonances. Making good use of the rich fingerprint information, selective identification and simultaneous quantitation of biothiols in complex biological environment can be achieved. Trace biothiols in human serum samples have been successfully determined using this method. This work provides a feasible strategy to construct efficient charge-transfer resonances, enabling high-performance direct SERS sensing of biological small molecules.
