Antimony(Sb(III)) contamination in wastewater has raised global concerns due to its high toxicity. The efficiency and mechanisms of Sb(III) adsorptive removal from wastewater with environmentally-friendly biogenic Mn oxide (BMO) materials as adsorbent were investigated, based on kinetic experiments and multispectroscopic analyses. Kinetic experiments showed that after 300 min of reaction, 97.79–100% of Sb(III) and 85.60–92.92% of total Sb were removed, indicating that BMO can quickly and effectively oxidize Sb(III) and sequester Sb(V) from water. The bacterial activity in BMO did not significantly affect Sb(III) removal, but a decrease in the release of Mn(II) into solution may provide new reactive sites for the re-oxidation of Sb(III). X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) high-resolution analysis suggested that Sb(V) was the only speciation remaining in the solid phase after the reaction of Sb(III) with BMO. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results further showed that the fast oxidation of Sb(III) by BMO led to the production of Mn(II) antimonate (Mn 2 Sb 2 O 7 ) precipitates. Successive extraction experiments confirmed that residual fraction (67.49–83.62%) and Mn oxide bound fraction (13.18–29.72%) were the dominant fractions of Sb(III) after 300 min of reaction, which were relatively stable and had low leaching risks. These findings indicated that BMO performed well in removing Sb(III) from wastewater.

A novel SnO 2 -Sb/CA electrode, possessing high surface area, strong adsorption capacity, good electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity, was firstly proposed for ultrasonic electrochemical oxidation (US-EC) of persistent high concentration perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) in this study. The optimal calcination temperature for sinking micro-sized SnO 2 -Sb particles existed on the surface of CA into the structure of CA as nanoparticles was 600 °C. Its application on degrading PFOA (60 mL of 100 mg L −1 ) exhibited efficient electrocatalytic performance. After 5 h electrolysis, over 91% of PFOA was degraded with a first-order kinetic constant of 0.52 h −1 and over 86% TOC removal was achieved, while 47% PFOA removal and 33% TOC removal were obtained in traditional electrochemical (EC) process. The main role of determining the decomposition efficiency, i.e., the mass transport, hydroxyl radical (·OH) generation and electrode surface reaction, were greatly enhanced in US-EC system. Additionally, the generated intermediates existing on electrode surface and in solution were separately detected after different electrolysis time and the proper mechanism for efficient removing PFOA in US-EC process was investigated in detail. At early reaction stage (<0.5 h), the intermediate products on SnO 2 -Sb/CA surface were C 5 F 11 COO − , C 4 F 9 COO − , C 3 F 7 COO − , C 2 F 5 COO − , CF 3 COO − , while in solution were C 5 F 11 COO − , C 4 F 9 COO − , C 3 F 7 COO − . At late reaction stage (>5 h), the intermediates either on electrode surface or in solution became the same including C 5 F 11 COO − , C 4 F 9 COO − , C 3 F 7 COO − .

The
knowledge of the effects of Sb(V) on the physiological characteristics of cyanobacteria was still limited. In the present study, responses of photosystem I and II (PSI and PSII), cyclic electron flow (CEF), and interphotosystem electron transport of Microcystis aeruginosa to 5–100 mg/l Sb(V) were synchronously measured using the Dual-PAM-100. 5 mg/l Sb (V) significantly inhibited PSII activity, but had no significant effects on PSI activity. At higher concentrations of Sb(V), the quantum yield and electron transport of PSI were less affected compared to PSII. The ratio of Y (II)/ Y (I) significantly decreased with increasing Sb(V) concentration. It decreased from 0.7 for control to 0.4 for 100 mg/l Sb(V)-treated cells, indicating that the change of the distribution of quantum yields between two photosystems and more serious inhibition of PSII under stress of Sb(V) compared to PSI. CEF was activated associated with the inhibition of linear electron flow after exposure to Sb(V). The contribution of Y (CEF) to the quantum yield and activity of PSI increased with increasing Sb(V) concentrations. The cyclic electron transport rate made a significant contribution to electron transport rate of PSI, especially at high Sb(V) concentration (100 mg/l) and high illumination (above 555 μmol photons/m 2 /s). The stimulation of CEF was essential for the higher tolerance of PSI than PSII to Sb(V).

An optimized metal oxide electrode (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb-Pd) was prepared via thermal decomposition and used in the electrochemical degradation of Ni-EDTA. The electrode was characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS, and electrochemical characterizations including linear-sweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronopotentiometry (CP) techniques. It was found that Pd doping could effectively change the surface morphology and lattice parameters of the metal oxide electrode. Pd can facilitate the entry of more Sb into SnO 2 crystals and promote the reduction of Sb from the +5 to the +3 state. The interaction of these metals raised the oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and electrochemical surface area of the electrode, in addition to reducing the degradation potential and increasing the degradation current of Ni-EDTA. When the molar ratio of Pd:Sn was 2.5%, the electrode could simultaneously degrade 87.5% of Ni-EDTA and recycle 17.9% of elemental Ni on the cathode within 120 min. At the same time, with Pd doping, the lifetime of the electrode was increased more than 40 times, demonstrating good potential for application in industry.

Microplastics have been identified as an emerging pollutant that poses a risk to the aquatic environment, and it is a challenge to find a suitable removal process. Electrocatalytic oxidation (ECO) technology has shown promising performance in removing various persistent organic pollutants. In this study, we prepared a new anode for removing polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs) by ECO. Ti/La-Sb-SnO 2 electrodes doped with the rare earth element La as the active layer were synthesized to enhance the electrocatalytic activity. The lifespan of the electrode was improved by doping Mn, Co, or Ru as an intermediate layer modification between the titanium (Ti) substrate and the La-Sb-SnO 2 active layer, respectively. The experimental results indicated that the addition of three types of intermediate layers led to different degrees of decrease in the catalytic activity of the electrode and the degradation performance of PS MPs. The addition of the Co intermediate layer had a negligible effect on the catalytic activity and performance of the Ti/La-Sb-SnO 2 anode for PS degradation. In addition, the electrode lifespan with Co intermediate layer was significantly prolonged, which was 4.54, 2.38, and 1.19 times higher than the electrode without intermediate layer and the electrode with Ru and Mn intermediate layer, respectively. Therefore, Co was determined to be the optimal choice as the intermediate layer, and the production technique for the Ti/La/Co-Sb-SnO 2 anodes was carefully adjusted. The degradation efficiency of PS MPs was optimized at a heat treatment temperature of 400 °C and a Sn: Co material ratio of 5:1, with a removal rate of 28.0 %. The ECO treatment also resulted in more pronounced changes in the structure and functional groups of the MPs. Various alkyl cleavage and oxidation products were detected after the treatment, suggesting that the oxidant (hydroxyl radicals) strongly interacted with the MPs, leading to their degradation. Overall, this work provided a new insight into removing MPs in water through the use of modified electrodes.

In this work, Ti/TiO2-RNTs/SnO2–Sb–Ni-La electrodes were developed in three deposition stages. TiO2-RNTs improved the bonding of the bottom layer, and Ni–La codoping resulted in higher film stability. Compared with other electrodes, this electrode exhibits excellent performance with a denser structure, higher OEP (2.17 V), lower Rct (5.36 Ω), longer electrode strengthening life, and larger active specific surface area. The degradation of oily wastewater revealed an oil removal rate equal to 97.88% under optimal conditions. In comparison to the Ti/TiO2-RNTs/SnO2–Sb obtained via the one-step hydrothermal technique, the service life improved by 8.60 times, and the degradation rate (RD) of the current electrode (k = 0.0254 min–1) was enhanced by 2.67 times, whereas the removal rate remained stable after 10 cycles. Under the continuous attack of free radicals such as •OH, 48 types of organic matter in wash oil were decomposed, and most of the alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were mineralized. Compared with direct current, pulse current electrolysis of the oil-washing wastewater can save 47.95% electrical energy, and the energy consumption of chemical oxygen demand removal per unit mass can be reduced by 72.02%. Therefore, the Ti/TiO2-RNTs/SnO2–Sb–Ni-La pulse electrochemical oxidation method is expected to reduce energy loss and improve the electrochemical treatment of oily wastewater.

Beyond phonon transport, non-propagating transport is also crucial for crystals to achieve ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity (κ L ) approaching the amorphous limitation. In our study, the demonstrated enhancement of phonon localization proves instrumental in achieving ultra-low κ L , offering an understanding of the role of non-propagating transport. We experimentally verified this principle through a meticulously designed vapor-liquid-solid reaction in Mg 3 (Sb,Bi) 2 -based materials. A remarkably low κ L of 0.19 W/mK at room temperature was obtained. This marked a 77% reduction, compared with full-density counterparts, and was attributed to enhanced localization involved in high-frequency phonons. Moreover, we achieved a record zT value close to 1.2 at room temperature, along with the highest average zT value of 1.6 from 300 to 573 K among all n-type materials. These remarkable results align precisely with electron-phonon decoupling through strengthening phonon localization for materials design and application, which underscores the pivotal role in thermal transport.

In this study, a novel Ti-enhanced nanotube arrays/SnO 2 -Sb electrode was prepared by the sol-gel method on enhanced TiO 2 nanotube arrays (ENTA). The characterization, degradation performance, oxidation mechanism and mass transfer impact of the novel electrode was investigated. Compared with the conventional Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrode, our novel electrode has higher oxygen evolution potential and electrochemical stability, due to the fabrication of ENTA structure. Its application for the destruction of a common biocide of MIT (2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one), the first-order rate constants were determined from 0.01 min −1 to 0.505 min −1 during the electrochemical process. The radical oxidation and non-radical oxidation of the MIT degradation contribution were quantitatively identified as 87.8% and 12.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the second-rate constant between hydroxyl radical and MIT was estimated at 3.72 × 10 9 M − 1 S − 1 . The mass transfer impact was investigated with a differential column batch reactor (DCBR) under the conditions of various electrode spacing and fluid velocities. It indicated that reducing the electrode spacing and increasing the fluid velocity would enhance the mass transfer process and increase the overall oxidation rate. Meanwhile, the EE/O decreased from 17.7 kWh m −3 to 9.7 kWh m −3 , and the mass transfer coefficients increased dramatically from 0.52 × 10 −6 m s −1 to 2.48 × 10 −6 m s −1 .

Ambient-pressure-dried (APD) crack-free Sb-SnO 2 xerogel has been developed through a facile sol-gel approach. Propylene oxide was added into the tin and antimony precursors to cause rapid formation of the wet gel, which was then modified with silica and dried under ambient pressure. A silica modification carried out by soaking the wet gel in TEOS/ethanol solution, in combination with solvent exchange, allowed to avoid the risky and costly supercritical drying (SCD) process. The silica possessed dual-functional effects during the synthesis process as surface silylation agent and underlying silica structure. FT-IR, SAXS, TEM, and nitrogen physisorption analysis revealed a favorable silica dispersion, outstanding specific surface area (254 m 2 g −1 ), pore volume (0.52 cm 3 g −1 ), and ideal pore size (8.75 nm) for the products. The key properties of the APD crack-free Sb-SnO 2 xerogel were compared with that of SCD aerogel at the same synthesis conditions. Finally, the electrochemical behaviors of 3D electrochemical system filled with the as-synthesized materials as particle electrodes were investigated, which with regard to voltammetric charge and polarization impedance. Padding of the crack-free Sb-SnO 2 xerogels yielded a voltammetric charge 2.99 times as large as that of conventional electrochemical system, and decreased the charge transfer resistance from 46.19 to 6.39 Ω, which realize intrinsically enhanced electrochemical performance for 3D electrochemical system.

A variety of cesium supported catalysts with amorphous SiO2 as a carrier were prepared by vacuum impregnation and ultrasonic impregnation methods, which were used for the synthesis of methyl acrylate by aldol condensation of methyl acetate and formaldehyde. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, NH3-TPD, CO2-TPD, XPS, ICP and TG. The results indicated that the bifunctional Cs–La–Sb/SiO2 showed a high conversion of methyl acetate as well as a high yield of methyl acrylate, which was attributed to the weak acid–base sites and the formation of basic Cs–O–Si species with the addition of antimony and lanthanum, respectively. Furthermore, Cs–La–Sb/SiO2-(V) prepared by vacuum impregnation showed a high initial catalytic activity, but its activity sharply decreased due to the loss of active species. Comparatively, Cs–La–Sb/SiO2-(U) prepared by ultrasonic impregnation showed a good stability owing to the cavitation effect of ultrasonic waves. The conversion of methyl acetate and yield of methyl acrylate remained above 20% and 9.0% (based on methyl acetate) for 100 h without obvious deactivation. Moreover, carbon deposition was the main factor for the deactivation of Cs–La–Sb/SiO2-(U), and the coked catalyst could be regenerated by calcination in air.

Antimony contamination in industrial wastewater requires effective simultaneous removal of both Sb(III) and Sb( V ) species, yet their contrasting chemical characteristics pose significant challenges for conventional adsorbents. Here, we demonstrate that amorphous chitosan-Fe coordination polymer sheets (CS-Fe aCPs) achieve exceptional Sb(III/ V ) capture through a dual-mode synergistic mechanism. For Sb(III), ligand exchange dominates the adsorption process, wherein Sb(OH) 3 directly coordinates with Fe 3+ centers by displacing weakly-bound NO 3 − ligands, as evidenced by stoichiometric NO 3 − release and significant Fe 2p binding energy shifts in XPS analysis. This process further triggers sequential Sb bridging interactions, producing an S-shaped isotherm and enabling a maximum capacity of 626.97 mg/g. For Sb( V ), the persistently high positive surface charge (+15 to +30 mV across pH 2–10) facilitates electrostatic capture of [Sb(OH) 6 ] − anions, supplemented by partial ligand displacement, achieving 574.55 mg/g capacity. The amorphous coordination framework provides abundant coordinatively unsaturated Fe 3+ sites and structural adaptability essential for accommodating both Sb species without steric hindrance. This dual-mode synergy ensures pH-insensitive performance, exceptional resistance to competing ions, and stable operation in fixed-bed column and membrane filtration systems, establishing CS-Fe aCPs as a cost-effective platform for mixed Sb speciation remediation.

Electrochemical chlorine evolution is a promising approach for antimicrobial and wastewater treatment. However, the large-scale applications of conventional electrodes are hindered by the high cost of precious metals and tedious thermal decomposition method. In this study, precious metal-free electrodes for chlorine evolution were fabricated via liquid plasma spraying technique using a Ti 0.35 V 0.35 Sn 0.25 Sb 0.05 feedstock solution with varying total metal concentration. Scanning electron microscopy combined with EDS elemental analysis showed that the coatings exhibited a loose and porous morphology, with Ti, V, Sn and Sb elements uniformly distributed throughout. X-ray diffraction analysis identified characteristic diffraction peaks corresponding to VO 2 , SnO 2 , Sb 2 O 5 and TiO 2 in the coatings. The electrocatalytic properties of the coatings were evaluated using multiple electrochemical techniques, and the electrode prepared using the 1.0 M feedstock solution demonstrated the best performance. Antimicrobial test showed that after 30-s electrolysis, the disinfection rates of simulated tap water against E. coli and S. aureus exceeded 88.1% and 96.8%, respectively, whereas for the 0.06 M NaCl solution, both pathogens were inactivated by over 99.9% within 15 s. Additionally, methylene blue degradation reached 98.4% after 45 min of electrolysis. This study provides a new strategy for producing low-cost chlorine-evolving electrodes with potential application in antibacterial and wastewater treatment.
