In this study, ZrB 2 -SiC-based ceramic composites were fabricated via hot pressing by incorporating Y 2 O 3 and YF 3 additives, respectively, to optimize their microstructure and comprehensive performances. The results indicate that both additives promoted sintering densification and mechanical reinforcement through the in situ formation of YBO 3 phases at the grain boundaries. Notably, the addition of YF 3 yielded superior overall performance compared to Y 2 O 3 . The composites with added YF 3 achieved relative density of 99.82%, with hardness of 14.55 GPa, flexural strength of 366.3 MPa, and fracture toughness of 5.72 MPa·m 1/2 . Crucially for electrode applications, the high densification facilitated the formation of a robust conductive network, resulting in a high electrical conductivity of 6.12 × 10 6 S/m. Regarding oxidation resistance, F − effectively reduced the viscosity of the glass phase protective layer. This enhanced flowability facilitated rapid self-healing of surface defects, resulting in significantly superior oxidation resistance compared to the Y 2 O 3 added composites. This work demonstrates that YF 3 is a highly effective sintering additive for tailoring ZrB 2 -SiC-based ceramic composites to fabricate high-performance ceramic electrodes.

α-Si 3 N 4 and SiC powders were prepared from reaction between SiO 2 and carbon black in different atmosphere. The effects of atmospheres, raw material particle sizes, and C/SiO 2 molar ratio on the syntheses of Si 3 N 4 and SiC powders were investigated. The optimal parameters for preparing α-Si 3 N 4 were determined to be a temperature of 1500 °C for 8 h with a C/SiO 2 molar ratio of 4.0. In addition, the results demonstrated that H 2 atmosphere facilitated SiC synthesis by lowering its formation temperature. SiC powders were synthesized under a flowing H 2 atmosphere at 1500 °C for 5 h. N 2 -H 2 mixed atmosphere inhibited Si 3 N 4 formation while promoting SiC synthesis, with increasing SiC content as the H 2 partial pressure rose. Meanwhile, the size reduction of raw materials was conducive to promoting the formation of Si 3 N 4 and SiC and reducing the granularity of the final product. However, if the particle size of the raw materials was too fine, the product will tend to agglomerate.

Reactive melt infiltration enables the incorporation of rare-earth elements into SiC/SiC composites to form protective silicate layers under water–oxygen environments, but thermal expansion mismatch may degrade mechanical properties. To address this issue, a gradient design is proposed, enriching Y near the surface while maintaining a SiC-dominated interior. By exploiting the structural tunability of polymer precursors, Y is introduced prior to Si infiltration, ensuring controllable content and spatial distribution. Porous Y-C with either uniform or gradient Y distributions are fabricated via a soft-template method combined with hierarchical impregnation. After corrosion at 1300–1400 °C, SiC ceramics with uniformly distributed Y (1.26 wt.%) forms dendritic Y 2 Si 2 O 7 , providing moderate protection, whereas gradient Y (2.21 wt.%) rapidly develops a dense and continuous surface silicate layer. This layer effectively suppresses SiO 2 volatilization and enhances corrosion resistance up to 1400 °C. The improved corrosion resistance arises from spatial Y regulation, enabling synergistic “rapid reaction–layer formation–long-term protection.”

A novel Pr 3 Si 2 C 2 additive was introduced to lower the sintering temperature of NITE-SiC f /SiC composites to 1550°C–1650°C. Pr 3 Si 2 C 2 effectively promoted densification, achieving 3.11 g/cm 3 density and 4.9% open porosity at 1600°C. However, the densification process causes severe thermochemical damage to the interphase layers and fibers. At 1550°C–1600°C, a kinetically-dominated “transient Pr-rich layer” is formed at the fiber/interphase boundary. This stems from a three-order-of-magnitude disparity in Pr-ion diffusion coefficients between the BN interphase and SiC fiber (At 1550°C, D BN ≈ 9.66 × 10 −13 m 2 /s vs. D SiC ≈ 8.31 × 10 −16 m 2 /s). Above 1650°C, Pr 3 Si 2 C 2 decomposition products react with the BN to form SiC, Pr 25 B 14 C 26 , and Pr 6 O 11 , shifting interfacial bonding from weak (23 MPa) to strong (154 MPa). Concomitantly, the Pr-bearing liquid phase infiltrates fibers along grain boundaries, inducing abnormal grain growth (from 8.8 to 54 nm) via Ostwald ripening. This caused monofilament tensile strength to drop from 2771.5 to 624.6 MPa and the Weibull modulus from 6.11 to 3.65. Combined interfacial degradation and fiber lead to a decline in composite performance, with the fracture mode shifting from pseudoplastic to brittle. This study elucidates the corrosion mechanisms of Pr 3 Si 2 C 2 on SiC fibers and BN interphases, providing a crucial theoretical foundation for optimizing the processing window of NITE-SiC f /SiC composites.

Single crystal silicon carbide (SiC) ranks among the representative third-generation semiconductor materials. Owing to its superior physical and chemical characteristics, it is regarded as a highly desirable substrate candidate for the preparation of high-power electronic chips. However, the exceptional hardness and outstanding chemical inertness of this material present substantial technical obstacles to the high-efficiency chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of single crystal SiC substrates. In this work, the Fenton component (FeSO 4 ) in the CMP polishing slurry was encapsulated to form microcapsules. During the polishing process, these microcapsules make contact with the surface of the workpiece and liberate hydroxyl radicals (•OH) characterized by strong oxidizing properties, thereby facilitating efficient interfacial chemical reactions, effectively improving CMP processing efficiency, and extending the useful life of the polishing slurry. First, the influence of different polishing systems on the polishing effect was investigated. Subsequently, how abrasive category, particle size, abrasive concentration, contact pressure, rotational speed, and processing time affect the polishing of single crystal SiC were systematically analyzed. According to the experimental results, under the optimum process conditions—W0.5 CeO 2 abrasive, 1 wt% abrasive concentration, 228.7 kPa contact pressure, 60 rpm rotational speed, and 80 min processing time—high-efficiency and high-quality polishing of single crystal SiC can be achieved. The material removal rate (MRR) is 2.391 μm/h, and the surface roughness (Sa) is 0.617 nm.

The introduction of transition metal carbides has been shown to improve the oxidation resistance of ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics at moderate temperatures; however, their effectiveness under ultra-high temperature ablation conditions remains limited. In this work, nanoscale Ta 4 HfC 5 powder was synthesized at a low temperature (1400 °C) via a three-dimensional gel network, which enables ZrB 2 -SiC-Ta 4 HfC 5 ceramic to achieve high densification below 2000 °C. Oxyacetylene ablation tests at surface temperatures above 2100 °C demonstrated that the incorporation of Ta 4 HfC 5 significantly improved the ablation resistance, resulting in a dense and adherent oxide layer with a negative linear ablation rate. The improved ablation behavior was associated with the formation of multicomponent oxides during high-temperature oxidation, which contributed to the stabilization of the oxide scale. This study highlights the potential of Ta 4 HfC 5 as an effective functional additive for ZrB 2 –SiC-based ultra-high temperature ceramics.

Triple-layered C@SiC@SiO 2 microspheres were successfully fabricated. • Superb RL of −62.95 dB and 3.05 GHz bandwidth are achieved at thinness. • Gradient impedance structure boosts wave penetration and attenuation. Gradient structural engineering holds great promise in boosting microwave absorption capability by realizing smooth impedance matching and manipulating electromagnetic wave transportation within materials. Herein, well-defined triple-layered C@SiC@SiO 2 microspheres with a dielectric gradient architecture are rationally constructed via hydrothermal self-assembly followed by carbothermal reduction. By delicately regulating the composition ratio of C/SiC/SiO 2 , the optimized absorber achieves outstanding room-temperature microwave absorption properties: a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −62.95 dB at a thin thickness of 1.73 mm, and a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max) of 3.05 GHz (RL < −10 dB) at merely 1.68 mm, which covers the most of the X-band. The excellent absorption performance is synergistically contributed by the significantly optimized impedance matching originating from the three-layer dielectric gradient architecture, abundant heterogeneous interfaces inducing intense interfacial polarization, as well as rich dipoles favoring strong dipole polarization. Moreover, the gradient structure also promotes multiple scattering and reflection of electromagnetic waves, further enhancing energy attenuation. This work not only develops a high-performance microwave absorber but also offers a feasible strategy for designing gradient heterostructures toward advanced electromagnetic wave absorption applications. In order to overcome the constraints of slurry rheology and fiber bundle size in suppressing fiber deviation during DIW 3D printing of continuous carbon fiber-reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (C f /SiC CMCs), a novel fiber self-heating 3D printing strategy for the rapid, on-demand fabrication of continuous C f /SiC composites was proposed, in which electrically conductive carbon fibers serve simultaneously as continuous reinforcements and internal Joule-heating elements. During co-extrusion of carbon fibers and a thermosetting SiC slurry, the electrified fibers generate localized heat that in situ cures the surrounding slurry, thereby immediately immobilizing the fibers after deposition and suppressing their deviation from the designed toolpath. The resulting preforms are subsequently densified by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis as well as reactive melt infiltration to produce C f /SiC composites. This process enables accurate placement of continuous fibers and automated printing of complex composite architectures, offering an approach to improve the structural fidelity and mechanical reliability of C f /SiC composites.

A highly efficient continuous-flow catalytic system for the ambient hydrogenation of nitroarenes to arylamines has been developed using a 1 wt.% Pd catalyst supported on robust, chemically stable SiC nanowires (Pd/SiC NWs). This system achieved 97% conversion and 98% selectivity for converting 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) within 5 minutes using NaBH₄ as a hydrogen donor. A pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 0.753 min⁻¹ was determined, which is 4.5 times faster than that observed in a batch reaction system and significantly surpasses rates achieved with Pd supported on other common carriers (activated carbon, silica, alumina) and other noble metals (Pt, Au, Ag) supported on SiC NWs. The reaction system demonstrated high stability and a broad substrate scope for various substituted nitroarenes. The high catalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic interaction between the Pd catalyst and the SiC NWs substrate, which enhances the dissociation of NaBH₄ to produce H* and facilitates the subsequent transfer of H* to the substrate, resulting in the formation of mobile and reactive Si-H* species. This process promotes the hydrogenation of the preferentially adsorbed 4-NP on SiC NWs. Furthermore, the forced mass transfer and the uniformity of the reaction microenvironment, which prevent back-mixing of reactants and intermediates in the flow system, ensure the sequential hydrogenation of the -NO2 group via the Haber’s direction route mechanism, with nitroso as the primary intermediate. This research offers a promising approach for the efficient and convenient synthesis of arylamines.

In this work, continuous and dense Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 coating was formed on the surface of SiC fibers by reaction of the Yb 2 O 3 coatings prepared via urea-based homogeneous precipitation with SiO 2 scales formed by fiber oxidation. The effect of SiO 2 to Yb 2 O 3 thickness ratio on the microstructure and morphology of Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 coatings was investigated. Fiber oxidation and defects introduced during coating synthesis cause severe fiber degradation, and pre-deposition of SiC via chemical vapor infiltration can improve the strength retention of the fibers. The Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 coatings can protect fibers from corrosion in water vapor environment at 1200 ℃, showing great resistance to oxidation.

Crack initiation and propagation of ZrB 2 -SiC-Graphite (ZSG) sharp leading edges (SLEs) subjected to thermal shock were systematically evaluated by the water spraying method followed by a crack dyeing treatment. Distinct differences in the crack patterns among different test conditions were observed, and the cracking behavior of ZSG SLEs (including crack initiation time , crack number and critical failure temperature) was revealed to be strongly dependent on both the cooling rate and the microstructure. The crack propagation during thermal shock could be considered as a quasistatic process (crack speed was lower than 1 cm/s) that needed to be driven by continuous cooling.

In the present work, SiC ceramic samples with Al 2 O 3 and CeO 2 sintering additives were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effects of Al 2 O 3 to CeO 2 molar ratio from 6.25:3.75 to 5:5, 4:6 and 3:7 on sintering behavior, microstructure, Vickers hardness , and fracture toughness of the SiC ceramic samples were investigated and compared. The results showed that, the relative density of SiC ceramic samples increased from 97.8% to 99.2%, and the Vickers hardness increased from 19.72 ± 0.41 GPa to 21.18 ± 0.92 GPa as the CeO 2 molar ratio increased. The increase in CeO 2 molar ratio effectively improved the densification and hardness of SiC ceramics.
