Herein, a potential hydrogel based on sodium alginate (SA) integrated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) was fabricated and employed for the elimination of methyl blue (MB) in aqueous media. The SA/PEI hydrogel demonstrated excellent removal performance for MB, i.e. ~99% of MB could be removed from water within ~30 min using 0.5 g/L SA/PEI hydrogel at 100 mg/L initial concentration. The SA/PEI hydrogel presented maximum adsorption capacity for MB as-high as 400.0 mg/g with the adsorption isotherm and kinetics abide with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo second-order kinetics, respectively. The adsorption process followed through chelation between the functionality of the hydrogel and MB as-confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. After four consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of the SA/PEI hydrogel remained up to ~60% of its adsorption capacity in first cycle. Thus, being a cost-effective and eco-friendly material, the SA/PEI hydrogel can be a potential adsorbent in the decontamination of MB in wastewater.

The stability of active ingredients in royal jelly (RJ) was significantly enhanced. • RJ-SANPs exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and skin-cell biocompatibility. • RJ-SANPs promote type I collagen synthesis in HFF-1 cells. • Ca 2+ -crosslinked alginate preserves RJ bioactivity via structural stabilization. To improve the stability of the natural bioactive substance royal jelly (RJ), this study prepared RJ-loaded sodium alginate nanoparticles (RJ-SANPs) via Ca 2+ -mediated ion-gelation method. SEM and TEM showed predominantly spherical nanoparticles. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of hydrogen bonds between RJ and SA, while XRD analysis revealed the coexistence of crystalline RJ domains with the amorphous SA matrix, together confirming its successful encapsulation. Moreover, the RJ-SANPs showed hydrodynamic diameter of 532.63 ± 64.22 nm to 662.73 ± 63.65 nm and its encapsulation efficiency (EE) ranges from 42.33% to 58.62%. The in vitro release of 10-HDA from RJ-SANPs followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism, as described by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. DSC results indicated that SA's “egg-box” structure enhanced the thermal stability of RJ by altering its thermal behavior. The 1:1 RJ-SANPs exhibited good biocompatibility toward HaCaT and HFF-1 cells. It increased type I collagen content in HFF-1 cells in a concentration-dependent manner, reaching 593.64 ng/mL at 0.025% ( v / v ) ( p < 0.05), and also showed antioxidant activity with a maximum ABTS radical scavenging rate of 62.10%, as well as antibacterial activity against E. coli , P. fluorescens , B. cereus , and S. aureus. However, the low concentrations tested did not significantly upregulate AQP3 expression, which might be attributed to the dose-dependent bioactivity of RJ-SANPs. They retained stability at 4 °C, pH 3.0 – 7.0, and 0 – 300 mmol/L NaCl. The work confirmed that SA encapsulation enhances RJ stability while preserving key bioactivities, suggesting the potential of RJ-SANPs as antioxidant and collagen-promoting functional ingredients for skin-care applications. The nasty urine microenvironment (UME) is an inherent obstacle that hinders urethral repair due to fibrosis and swelling of the oftentimes adopted hydrogel-based biomaterials. Here, using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) along with double-freeze-drying to strengthen a 3D-printed patch is reported to realize scarless urethral repair. The sodium alginate/gelatin/reduced graphene oxide (SA/Gel/rGO) biomaterial features tunable stiffness, degradation profile, and anti-fibrosis performance. Interestingly, the 3D-printed alginate-containing composite scaffold is able to respond to Ca 2+ present in the urine, leading to enhanced structural stability and strength as well as inhibiting swelling. The investigations present that the swelling behaviors, mechanical properties, and anti-fibrosis efficacy of the SA/Gel/rGO patch can be modulated by varying the concentration of rGO. In particular, rGO in optimal concentration shows excellent cell viability, migration, and proliferation. In-depth mechanistic studies reveal that the activation of cell proliferation and angiogenesis-related proteins, along with inhibition of fibrosis-related gene expressions, play an important role in scarless repair by the 3D-printed SA/Gel/rGO patch via promoting urothelium growth, accelerating angiogenesis, and minimizing fibrosis in vivo. The proposed strategy has the potential of resolving the dilemma of necessary biomaterial stiffness and unwanted fibrosis in urethral repair.

Adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, sustainability, and reusability are desired in wastewater treatments. Herein, covalently crosslinked microporous cryogels with efficient removal of cationic dyes are fabricated by freezing radical copolymerization using methacrylated alginate (AlgMA) and sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS). The chemical structure, morphology, and thermal stability of the AlgMA/PNaSS cryogels are characterized. Compared with the AlgMA/PNaSS hydrogels with the same chemical composition fabricated by thermal-initiated polymerization, the cryogels show higher adsorption of methylene blue . The AlgMA/PNaSS (with a mass ratio of 1:2) possesses the maximum adsorption capacity for MB with 2300 mg/g under alkaline condition. In addition, the adsorption process of AlgMA/PNaSS cryogels fits the pseudo-second order model and Freundlich model, respectively. The AlgMA/PNaSS cryogels also reveal selective adsorption capacity and reusability after regeneration, which own unchanged corrected adsorption capacity during five adsorption-desorption cycles. The AlgMA/PNaSS cryogels show great potential for use in wastewater treatments and intelligent separation.

Injectable hydrogels that can withstand compressive and tensile forces hold great promise for preventing rebleeding in dynamic mechanical environments after emergency hemostasis of wounds. However, current injectable hydrogels often lack sufficient compressive or tensile performance. Here, a microstructure-united heterogeneous injectable hydrogel (MH) was constructed. The heterogeneous structure endowed MH with a unique “microstructures consecutive transmission” feature, which allowed it to exhibit high compressive and tensile performance simultaneously. In this work, two types of sodium alginate doped hydrogels with different microstructures were physically smashed into microgels, respectively. By mixing the microgels, MH with one micro-pores featured microstructure and another nano-pores featured microstructure can be formed. The obtained MH can withstand both compressive and tensile forces and showed high mechanical performance (compressive modulus: 345.67 ± 10.12 kPa and tensile modulus: 245.19 ± 7.82 kPa). Furtherly, MH was proven to provide stable and sustained hemostasis in the dynamic mechanical environment. Overall, this work provided an effective strategy for constructing injectable hydrogel with high compressive and tensile performance for hemostasis in dynamic mechanical environments.

Due to the severe environmental pollution the paper-making process often causes, the rewritten paper has emerged as a key research area to replace traditional paper. However, it is challenging to achieve application control and maximize resource utilization in various occasions when using the recently reported photochromic papers, which have low fading efficiency and poor regeneration effect. In this study, a composite film made of sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with ammonium molybdate serving as the photochromic component was prepared. The film had mechanical properties similar to paper, good resolution, and visible color after 50 days. With a magnification of 20 times, the distinct borders were still discernible. Through water-soluble-regeneration of the damaged film, the photochromic film can be faded, regenerated and reused, which has a lengthy storage time for information. The film quality and resolution do not considerably degrade after ten cycles of the "information writing—dissolution (fading)—regenerative writing" closed-loop process, exhibiting excellent recycling performance and high recovery rate. Hence, the photochromic film presents a refreshing approach to the design of rewriteable paper.

To realize the biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and sustained antibacterial properties of medical materials, it is feasible to introduce antibacterial material components into biomass matrix to prepare medical materials. Herein, zinc oxide (ZnO) was in-situ synthesized in bacterial cellulose (BC) dispersion and filtered into a film, and the BC/ZnO composite film was further immersed in sodium alginate (Alg) solution to construct the second layer structure. The microstructure, mechanical strength, and antibacterial properties of the composite films were investigated systematically. The tensile strength of the BC/ZnO/CAlg sample was achieved at 16.5 ± 2.4 MPa, much higher than that of the Zn 2+ crosslinked CAlg film of 11.5 ± 1.2 MPa. The Zn 2+ cross-linked Alg in the outer layer and the BC/ZnO composite film in the inner layer combined to create a synergistic effect. This secondary structure design ensures good hydrophilicity and hygroscopicity of the material which enables the sustained-release migration of Zn 2+ from the inner layer to the outer layer. Finally, the BC/ZnO/CAlg composite film possesses excellent antibacterial performance against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In addition, this work systematically expounds on the antibacterial and slow-release mechanism of secondary structure composite membranes. The results will provide a database and theoretical reference for applying BC/ZnO/CAlg composite membranes in the medical field.

In this paper, bio-based waterborne polyurethane dispersions were successfully prepared from castor oil using 2, 2-dimethylolbutanoic acid as the chain extender. Then, a series of bio-based composite dispersions and films were prepared by blending different amounts of sodium alginate aqueous solution with these bio-based polyurethane dispersions. The chemical structures, thermo-mechanical properties, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the resulting composite films were characterized and discussed. The results show that the tensile strength and storage moduli of the composite films increase while the elongation at break of the composite films decrease with increasing the sodium alginate content. In addition, the contact angle and thermal stability of the composite films also increase with increasing sodium alginate content. These improvements are related to the increase of the crosslink density and the formation of interpenetrating networks with introduction of sodium alginate macromolecule.

One interpenetrating network hydrogel based on sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was synthesized by combining the raw materials of PVA and SA with the double physical crosslinking methods of freezing thawing and Ca 2+ crosslinking. The PVA-SA composite hydrogel have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy for surface morphology, infrared spectroscopy for investigating the chemical interactions between PVA and SA, X-ray diffraction for studying the PVA-SA composite structure property and thermal gravimetric for understanding the PVA-SA composite thermal stability. The swelling behavior and the degradation rate of the PVA-SA composite hydrogel were studied in simulated gastrointestinal fluid. Using bovine serum albumin (BSA) and salicylic acid as the model drugs, the release behavior of the PVA-SA composite hydrogel on macromolecular protein drugs and small molecule drug were evaluated. The results showed that the water absorption and degradation ability of the PVA-SA composite hydrogel was much better compared to the pure SA hydrogel or pure PVA hydrogel. The hydrogel exhibited remarkable pH sensitivity and the network was stable in the simulated intestinal fluid for more than 24 h. With the advantages such as mild preparation conditions, simple method, less reagent and none severe reaction, the PVA-SA composite hydrogel is expected to be a new prosperous facile sustained drug delivery carrier.

Polymer materials with electrically conductive properties have good applications in their respective fields because of their special properties. However, they usually exhibited poor mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In this work, we present a simple approach to prepare conductive sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) polymer hydrogels (SA/CMCS/PPy) that can provide sufficient help for peripheral nerve regeneration. SA/CMCS hydrogel was cross-linked by calcium ions provided by the sustained release system consisting of D-glucono-δ-lactone (GDL) and superfine calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and the conductivity of the hydrogel was provided by doped with polypyrrole (PPy). Gelation time, swelling ratio, porosity and Young's modulus of the conductive SA/CMCS/PPy hydrogel were adjusted by polypyrrole content, and the conductivity of it was within 2.41 × 10−5 to 8.03 × 10−3 S cm−1. The advantages of conductive hydrogels in cell growth were verified by controlling electrical stimulation of cell experiments, and the hydrogels were also used as a filling material for the nerve conduit in animal experiments. The SA/CMCS/PPy conductive hydrogel showed good biocompatibility and repair features as a bioactive biomaterial, we expect this conductive hydrogel will have a good potential in the neural tissue engineering.

Hierarchical porous activated carbon (AC) materials were prepared from a composite of highly accessible carbon sources, sodium alginate and bacterial cellulose, by carbonization and KOH activation. The as-obtained carbon materials not only possessed rich oxygenated functionalities but also formed a hierarchical porous structure. The unique structures and chemical compositions of the resulting materials demonstrate good potential for use in supercapacitor electrode materials. The AC had a three-dimensional interconnected network structure consisting of sheet-like connected particles. Interestingly, the carbon material possessed high graphitization degree and good electrical conductivity. The electrochemical properties of electrodes were evaluated in a three-electrode system in 6 M KOH. Due to the synergistic effects of the rich oxygen content and the porous structure, the sample calcined at 700 °C showed a high gravimetric capacitance of 302 F/g, an excellent capacitance retention ratio of 75.2% at 10 A g −1 , and good cycling stability with 93.8% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The as-obtained single electrode exhibited a very high energy density of 23.7 W h kg −1 , making it more interesting than commercial AC for practical applications. This study demonstrates that the utilization of abundant polymers from nature is a good route for fabricating high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.

Development of alternatives of bone wax to stop blood transfusion occurred in cancellous bone injury is highly deserved clinically. An ideal candidate is supposed to be not only biodegradable, biocompatible, malleable, and cost-effective, but also have comparable mechanical strength to cancellous bone. In the present work, calcium sulfate cement (CSC) based composites modified with hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) or sodium alginate (SA) were prepared. In brief, CSC was combined with 2, 4, 6 wt.% of HPMC or SA, respectively, followed by setting behavior evaluation, compressive strength and degradation testing, XRD, and SEM characterizations, as well as blood clotting induction study. Both additives improved the hemostatic performance of CSC, but CSC with 2% wt. SA exhibited the optimum setting time, mechanical strength, stability, and blood clotting ability. These results reveal the feasibility of using CSC–SA based composite as a substitute for bone wax.
