Photocatalytic biomass conversion offers a sustainable route for jet fuel production under mild conditions, while controlling the selectivity of products remains a long-standing challenge because of the involvement of various radical intermediates. Herein, we report a strategy to achieve selective switching toward jet fuel (C8–C18 hydrocarbons) in the photocatalytic decarboxylation of biomass-derived fatty acids by regulating hydrogen radical transfer on TiO2 surfaces. By modulating the valence states of Rh cocatalysts, we spatially orient radical intermediates to guide their reaction pathways: oxidized Rh (Rh3+) promotes decarboxylative hydrogenation (yielding Cn–1 alkanes), while reduced Rh (Rh0) drives decarboxylative C–C coupling (forming C2n–2 alkanes). This approach enables selective conversion of a broad range of biomass-derived acids, including fatty acids, aromatic acids, branched-chain fatty acids, and naphthenic acids, into target jet fuel hydrocarbons. This work provides an effective strategy for directing reaction pathways through spatial control of radical intermediates, advancing the development of sustainable biomass upgrading technologies.

Mild thermal dissolution is an effective method for the clean, low-carbon conversion of lignite. However, the resulting products still contain numerous oxygen-bridged bonds and heavy molecular compounds, requiring further upgrading to serve as suitable feedstocks for fuels and chemicals. In this study, a supported Cu-Ni bimetallic catalyst was synthesized via a co-precipitation method and applied to the catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) of thermal dissolution portions from Zhaotong lignite (ZT) and lignite-related model compounds (LRMCs). Catalyst characterization revealed that metal particles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of the Cu-Ni/CoOx-CeO 2 catalyst, along with the formation of defect sites. The CoOx-CeO 2 support promoted surface oxygen vacancy formation. Furthermore, the incorporation of Ni altered the local coordination environment of Cu species through multicomponent interactions. The synergy between interfacial oxygen vacancies and Cu-Ni bimetallic sites significantly enhanced catalytic activity. Tests with LRMCs indicated that the Cu-Ni/CoOx-CeO 2 catalyst selectively cleaves C-O ether bonds under mild conditions, exhibiting both high selectivity and strong hydrogenation activity in the CHC of phenolic compounds. The catalyst also effectively promoted the CHC of macromolecular species in the soluble portion from ZT thermal dissolution, thereby converting phenolic compounds into cycloalkanol. These finding provides valuable insights for developing staged conversion routes and achieving value-added utilization of lignite.

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) has attracted considerable attention in personal thermal management due to its zero-energy consumption and zero-pollution. However, PRC textiles in outdoor applications are susceptible to contamination, resulting in performance degradation. Inspired by the self-cleaning surface of lotus leaves, a biomimetic superhydrophobic cotton fabric for long-term passive radiative cooling was successfully fabricated by constructing ZIF-L/ZIF-8 micro-nanostructures and combining with polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) coatings. This multistage micro-nanostructure significantly enhanced the optical properties of cotton fabric, increasing the solar reflectance from 64.5% to 90.4% and the infrared emissivity from 93.0% to 95.8%. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic fabric demonstrated excellent radiative cooling performance, achieving a cooling effect of 5.3 °C under solar irradiation compared with cotton fabric. In particular, the fabric exhibited superior superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 162.8°, and maintained the WCA of over 150° under severe conditions such as soaking in acids, alkalis and salts, ultrasonic treatment, washing, tape peeling and abrasion. Most importantly, the fabric offers an efficient self-cleaning property, making it suitable for long-term outdoor radiative cooling. The biomimetic superhydrophobic fabric integrates radiative cooling and self-cleaning functions, providing a promising solution for the development of green, energy-saving and sustainable PRC textiles.

Conventional microfluidic chips, fabricated from rigid polymers like polydimethylsiloxane, fail to recapitulate the dynamic and compliant nature of the native extracellular matrix (ECM), limiting their broader applications in biomedicine. In contrast, hydrogel-based microfluidic chips offer a promising alternative. However, their fabrication remains challenging due to the structural fragility, often requiring multi-step processes and secondary bonding. Here, we report a paradigm-shifting strategy for the monolithic fabrication of hydrogel-based microfluidic chips by leveraging the unique spatiotemporal control of aqueous frontal polymerization (FP). We employ 3D-printed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a sacrificial template, which is encapsulated and preserved within a propagating polymerization front. The Transient reaction zone rapidly solidifies the hydrogel matrix within minutes, enabling the sacrificial template in its pristine state without significant deformation. Subsequent removal of the template yields complex, high-fidelity, and leak-free microchannels, avoiding post-fabrication bonding. The resulting hydrogel chip exhibits robust mechanical properties, anti-swelling capacity, antibacterial activity, and superior biocompatibility, providing great potentials for biomedical applications. This FP-directed fabrication method provides great convenience for precise control over channel geometries and sizes, paving a new avenue for creating next-generation all- hydrogel biomimetic microfluidic platforms.

Organic dye pollutants have posed a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), as a metal-free photocatalyst with broad application potential, has been widely explored for the degradation of environmental pollutants. However, its practical efficiency is severely limited by a low specific surface area and a high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, its performance is highly sensitive to synthesis parameters such as method, temperature, and precursor ratio. To address this, this study developed a multilayer perceptron-artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) model to quantify parameter impacts on Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate, integrating four synthesis methods (template-free, soft/hard/self-template), material characterization, and mechanistic analysis. MLP-ANN (R 2 =0.9774, outperforming random forest R 2 =0.563) identified melamine (FI=0.33), urea (FI=0.19), and silica template (FI=0.11) as key factors (for porous structure) and catalyst concentration (FI=0.17, increasing active sites) as dominant in reactions. Guided by the model, self-template g-C 3 N 4 (g-C 3 N 4 -SeT) showed optimal performance: k= 0.0613 min −1 , ∼100 % RhB degradation (43.8 times better than template-free g-C 3 N 4 -TF). SEM/TEM confirmed uniform porosity in g-C 3 N 4 -SeT, while UV-Vis DRS and PL showed the enhanced visible-light absorption and suppressed carrier recombination. Superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) were proved as the main active species. Efficient separation of electron-hole pairs by g-C 3 N 4 -SeT promotes the generation of •O 2 - , thereby accelerating RhB degradation. This work demonstrates the successful integration of machine learning with experimental characterization to optimize both the synthesis strategy and photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 , establishing a data-driven framework for the rational design of advanced functional catalysts.

Photo- and electro-chromic devices can facilitate the realization of a wide set of future applications, ranging from transparent displays, dynamic windows, optical switches, and variable optical attenuators. Tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) has always been the most studied material in the field of photo- and electro-chromic, although it has some bottlenecks. Here, we report a flexible transparent wood membrane for photo- and electro-chromic applications. The photochromic membrane (PCM) shows excellent photochromic properties, including high optical modulation (Δ T 1030 nm = 68.8%), ultraviolet (UV) shielding (> 92%) and dynamic light regulation. Meanwhile, the electrochromic membrane (ECM, active area: 1 cm × 2.5 cm) and assembled complementary devices (active area: 3.4 cm × 3.4 cm) produce high optical modulation (Δ T 1030 nm = 78.2%) at 1030 nm, and the transmittance in colored state of below 10%. Noteworthy, the ECM (active area: 3.4 cm × 3.4 cm) comprised of WO 3 /Ag nanowires (NWs)/flexible wood-derived transparent cellulose membranes, reveals enhanced optical modulation (60.7%) and rapid response time (coloring/bleaching time: 7.6 s/10.8 s). Moreover, the electrode also presents good cycling stability (96.2% after 120 cycles). The design of these chromic devices introduces an innovative strategy, which is expected to open up a new way for the development of photo- and electro-chromic devices. Crucially, the inherent flexibility and scalability of the transparent wooden substrate enable it to maintain relatively stable performance across different device dimensions, thereby resolving practical challenges in real-world applications.

A series of M 2 -L@OBC composites (M = Cu(II), Co(II), Fe(III); L = 5-Nitro-3-pyrazolecarboxylic acid; M:L molar ratio = 2:1; OBC = carboxylated bacterial cellulose) with 3D-networknet structure were successfully synthesized and utilized to improve the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP). The M 2 -L@OBC composites were characterized by IR, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS and XRD, and the results indicate that the M 2 -L nanoparticles are evenly covered on cellulose fibers. The catalytic effects were investigated using the non-isothermal method, which shows that the Fe 2 -L@OBC composites exhibits excellent performance. The peak temperature of the high-temperature decomposition (HTD) stage of AP mixing 2 wt% Fe 2 -L@OBC advanced by 66 °C, the activation energy decreased by 56 kJ/mol, and the reaction rate constant increased by 1.1 times. Furthermore, online TG/FT-IR revealed that Fe 2 -L@OBC composites could significantly accelerate the consumption of HClO 4 and NH 3 to the conversion of N 2 O, NO, and NO 2 . This is attributed to the abundant active sites on the Fe 2 -L@OBC surface, which provide fresh active sites after decomposing into metal oxide nanoparticles, thereby promoting the electron transfer process in the HTD stage.

The pervasive presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in water bodies underscores the urgency for the advancement of efficient and sustainable methods for their removal. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have demonstrated significant potential in water purification, with their effectiveness largely hinging on the development of high-performance catalysts. In this study, cobalt-doped nickel ferrite (Co-NFO) nanocatalysts were synthesized using a sol-gel combined with calcination method to enhance PMS activation for the degradation of micropollutants. Characterization results confirmed the successful incorporation of Co into the spinel lattice of NFO, which improved phase purity and electronic properties without significantly affecting textural features. The optimized 2.5%Co-NFO catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ), achieving a 92.7% degradation efficiency within 15 min, significantly outperforming the undoped NFO catalyst. The system demonstrated broad applicability across various micropollutants and maintained excellent stability and reusability over multiple reaction cycles. In-depth mechanistic studies, incorporating radical quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, electrochemical measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, have elucidated that the degradation process is driven by a multitude of reactive species. The enhanced catalytic activity was attributed to the improved electron transfer efficiency and stronger PMS adsorption at Co-active sites. Potential CBZ degradation pathways were proposed, and toxicity assessment indicated a general reduction in the acute toxicity of the generated intermediates. This study introduces an innovative Co-doped magnetic catalyst, which, through the doping process, significantly enhances its catalytic activity for PMS activation, thereby offering a promising solution for efficient water purification.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as promising energy storage systems owing to their high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their practical application faces critical challenges, including the formation of Zn dendrites and the occurrence of parasitic side reactions. These phenomena not only hinder ion transport kinetics but also cause rapid capacity decay and potential battery failure. To address these limitations, we developed a sustainable double-crosslinked cellulose hydrogel electrolyte by integrating micron-sized cellulose and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The hydrogel electrolyte, constructed from cellulose components with distinct size scales, exhibits a well-organized hierarchical porous network structure, which significantly facilitates the migration of zinc ions. Specifically, nanocellulose serves as a reinforcing filler that enhances the mechanical strength of the dual-network electrolyte, thereby inhibiting Zn dendrite growth. Additionally, abundant carboxyl polar functional groups were also introduced as high-affinity Zn 2+ binding sites to mitigate side reactions. Consequently, the assembled Zn//Zn symmetric cells with this electrolyte demonstrate superior cycling stability exceeding 1 100 h at current density of 0.5 mA/cm 2 , along with a high-capacity retention of 79.9% after 1 000 cycles in the Zn//V 2 O 5 battery. Furthermore, this cellulose hydrogel electrolyte is easily accessible and biodegradable, paving the way for the scalable production of high-performance and environmentally friendly energy storage devices.

The photocatalytic coupling of selective phenylcarbinol oxidation with hydrogen evolution has attracted considerable attention as a promising dual-functional reaction system. Herein, a lattice-matched 2D/3D NiS/CdIn 2 S 4 (NiS/CIS) Schottky heterojunction is rationally designed for efficient dual-functional photocatalysis under visible light. Structural analyses confirm the uniform deposition of NiS nanosheets on octahedral CIS with a lattice mismatch below 5%, ensuring coherent interfacial contact. The optimal 3% NiS/CIS composite exhibits exceptional hydrogen and benzaldehyde production rates of 2636.4 and 2717.6 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively—representing enhancements of 39.7 and 38.0 times over pristine CIS. The catalyst also demonstrates remarkable stability, retaining over >99.0% activity after six cycles. Mechanistic studies reveal that the Schottky junction facilitates spatial separation of photogenerated carriers: electrons migrate to NiS, prolonging charge carrier lifetimes and lowering the hydrogen evolution overpotential, while holes accumulate on CIS that facilitated phenylcarbinol adsorption to drive selective phenylcarbinol oxidation via a carbon-radical pathway. This work provides a viable approach for designing efficient bifunctional photocatalysts through lattice-matched interface engineering.

Existing separation technologies struggle to separate nanosized oil droplets from highly stabilized emulsions to address the water supply shortage, exhibiting an inherent shortcoming of poor permeability and severe oil fouling. Herein, we presented a microscale channel of ceramic membranes with a piezoelectric semiconductor microsphere skin constructed of hydrophobic nanodomains and rich oxygen vacancies. The sprinkled hydrophobic nanodomains acted as “oil capturing tentacles”, facilitating the efficient coalescence of oil droplets and preventing the formation of oil cake layer. The obtained membranes with microchannels could efficiently separate 16 types of oil-in-water nano/submicrometer-emulsions, achieving an ultrahigh permeation flux of up to 6550 L·m −2 ·h −1 with the separation efficiency exceeding 99.85%. Additionally, oily foulants on the membrane undergo degradation by piezotronic effect-enhanced photocatalysts, where piezoelectric-induced band bending drives highly efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, markedly boosting oil degradation with a nearly 99.5% flux recovery of the membrane. This research pioneers new pathways to advance membrane separation and environmental remediation for real-world applications.

The high-power outdoor electronics, such as 5G base stations, need energy-efficient thermal management. Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) represents a promising solution but faces practical limitations due to low thermal conductivity and performance degradation associated with coloration. Herein, we demonstrate a hierarchically structured asymmetric bilayer composite, fabricated through a scalable and feasible self-stratification process, which integrates a cholesteric photonic lattice of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with a highly thermally conductive framework of boron nitride (BN) nanosheets. The top photonic CNC layer providing vivid structural color and high mid-infrared emissivity (εMIR = 91.5%), and a bottom BN-rich layer delivering high solar reflectance (96.9%) and enhanced through-plane thermal conductivity (8.9 W/m•K). The material achieves a temperature drop of up to 17.8 °C under realistic solar and thermal loads, while its asymmetric heat transfer property suppresses parasitic heat gain from the environment. Furthermore, the composite enables scalable structural color patterning via screen printing without compromising cooling performance, offering both aesthetic customization and environmental durability. This work presents a scalable self-assembly strategy for high-performance, aesthetically versatile radiative cooling materials that address key challenges in next-generation electronic thermal management.
