MXene aerogels with a porous microstructure are a promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material due to its low density and excellent electrical conductivity, which has attracted widespread attention. Compared with traditional EMI shielding materials that rely on reflection as the primary mechanism, MXene aerogels with absorption as the dominant mechanism have greater potential for development as a novel EMI shielding material because of its ability to reduce environmental contamination from reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves from materials. In this study, a novel Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS hybrid aerogel was presented by freeze-drying and thermal annealing using few-layered Ti3C2Tx MXene and the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). PEDOT:PSS not only improved the gelling ability of Ti3C2Tx but also successfully established a conductive bridge between MXene nanosheets. The experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid aerogel exhibited an obvious porous microstructure, which was beneficial for the multiple scattering of EM waves within the materials. The EMI shielding effectiveness and specific shielding effectiveness reached up to 59 dB and 10,841 dB·cm2·g–1, respectively, while the SER/SET ratio value was only 0.05, indicating superior wave absorption performance. Furthermore, the good impedance matching, due to the electrical conductance loss and polarization loss effect of the composites, plays a critical role in their excellent wave absorption and EMI shielding performance. Therefore, this work provides a practical approach for designing and fabricating lightweight absorption-dominated EMI shielding materials.

Two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with excellent electrical conductivity and layered structure have shown great promising in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Here, MXene nanosheets with homogeneously anchored NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene) were prepared using facial electrostatic self-assembling and freeze-drying technique. Interestingly, the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of paraffin wax-based composites with only 3% NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene reached as low as − 41.83 dB, showing much stronger EMW absorption property than that of MXene nanosheets ( RL min = − 5.03 dB) at the same loading level. This can be mainly ascribed to the existence of NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle that can effectively prevent the self-stacking of MXene nanosheets, causing improved conduction loss. Besides, large amounts of heterogeneous interfaces between NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle and MXene can also produce additional interface polarization loss. More importantly, magnetic loss arising from the magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle is beneficial for good impedance matching, enabling more EMW to enter into the interior of composites to be dissipated. Furthermore, effective absorption bandwidth in the frequency range of 3.44–18 GHz can be achieved by adjusting the matching thickness of composites with 5% NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene. This study paves a way for preparing high-performance MXene-based EMW absorber at ultralow loading level. Graphical abstract Electrostatic self-assembled NiFe2O4/MXene nanocomposites exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance based on the synergistic effect of bifillers

Electrically conductive polymer nanocomposites are highly required for efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. Although two-dimensional transition metal carbide/carbonitride (MXene) nanosheets with metallic electrical conductivity and layered structure show great potential for the construction of interconnected conductance networks in polymer matrices, their preferred stacking feature and intrinsic hydrophilicity inevitably cause poor dispersion in organic polymers, making it challenging to prepare MXene/polymer nanocomposites with high electrical conductivity and satisfactory EMI shielding performances at low MXene contents. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient methodology to prepare highly conductive MXene/polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with an ultralow percolation threshold for efficient EMI shielding application. By dip-coating MXene nanosheets onto a polyethyleneimine-grafted PP textile, followed by vacuum-assisted compression molding, an interconnected conductance network of MXene nanosheets in the PP matrix is constructed facilely and efficiently. The resultant MXene/PP nanocomposite exhibits an ultralow percolation threshold of 0.027 vol %, a high electrical conductivity of 437.5 S m–1 at a low MXene loading of 2.12 vol %, and an outstanding EMI shielding performance of more than 60 dB within the X-band, superior to most other electrically conductive polymer nanocomposites. This work provides a new approach for fabricating MXene/polymer nanocomposites with outstanding electrical conductivity for high-performance EMI shielding applications.

Silicon has been regarded as a promising anode materials for lithium ion battery . However, large volume change during lithiation/delithiation process impedes its application for energy storage. Two-dimensional titanium carbide or carbonitride nanosheet , known as MXene , possesses layered-stacked structure and high electrical conductivity . So MXene has a great potential to improve the cycle life of silicon anode because its layered-stacked structure can accommodate the volume expansion of silicon. Herein, we present a facile process to prepare sandwich-like silicon/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite directed by electrostatic self-assembly. This unique architecture could accommodate silicon expansion during lithiation and enhance electronical conductivity. The silicon/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite delivers an initial reversible capacity of 1067.6 mAh g −1 at a current of 300 mA g −1 . Moreover, it shows a steady cycling ability of 643.8 mAh g −1 at 300 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. This work may shed lights on the development of high energy density silicon-based anode materials for lithium ion battery.

Developing non-noble-metal cocatalysts is essential for the large-scale implementation of solar-driven H 2 production technology, but still remains a great challenge. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene coupled CdS nanostructures are fabricated via one-step gamma-ray radiation-induced reduction in ambient conditions. By subsequent alkaline treatment, a novel cocatalyst of carbon supported amorphous TiO 2 nanosheets (denoted as aTiO 2 -C) is derived from Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS to form aTiO 2 -C/CdS nanocomposites. The prepared aTiO 2 -C/CdS nanocomposites with cyclability achieve a H 2 evolution rate of 1.48 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible-light illumination, which is 6.4 and 7.0 times greater than that of pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS and P-CdS, respectively. The oxygen vacancies in aTiO 2 -C cocatalysts are revealed to act as electron trapping sites to facilitate the transfer of photoexcited electrons and boost photoactivity. Further, the electronic interaction between CdS and aTiO 2 -C prevents Cd 2+ from leaching and thus enhances photostability. The results of this work may guide the rational design of viable cost-effective cocatalysts in solar-to-chemical energy conversion and beyond.

The present study deals with novel, and cost-effective preparation of 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) filled polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer nanocomposite for the attenuation of electromagnetic interference (EMI). The obtained nanocomposite showed remarkable shielding effectiveness ( SE ) of 48.47 ± 3.5 dB for 22.55 vol% filler contents at a thickness of 2 mm. Formation of conducting network along with the assembly of micro capacitor network preserved for its high EMI shielding performance. The absorption dominated EMI shielding mechanism explained by the strong resonance, and interfacial polarization favors the loss of incident EM energy confirmed from dielectric measurements. Besides, the enhanced thermal conductivity of MXene-PVDF nanocomposites about 0.767 ± 0.034 Wm −1 K −1 at 22.55 vol% filler content depicts that a large amount of incident EM wave attenuated majorly by dielectric components which would be dissipated as heat quickly. The fabricated MXene-PVDF nanocomposites could be a potential candidate for EMI shielding materials and promising multifaceted electronic utilization.

A new ultralight carbon foam/Ti3C2TX (CF/MXene) electromagnetic (EM) absorbing hybrid with three-dimensional network structure was fabricated by vacuum impregnation and freeze-drying process. These hybrids display excellent flexibility and steady compression-resilience properties and also the special three-dimensional structure with ultralow density of only 5–7 mg cm−3 shows higher EM absorption than most foam-based EM absorbers. Studies have shown that the minimum reflection loss of CF/MXene-N2 reaches −45 dB at 8.8 GHz with the Ti3C2TX nanosheets content of 9.8%. In the meanwhile, the effective absorption bandwidth of CF/MXene-N2 can also reach up to 5 GHz (from 6.9 GHz to 11.9 GHz) with the thickness of 4.5 mm. Moreover, the fundamental EM absorption mechanism of CF/MXene hybrids involved to impedance matching, conductive loss and polarization loss is carefully analyzed. Thus, it is expected that the new ultralight carbon foam/Ti3C2TX hybrids with three-dimensional network structure will have great application prospects in the fields of EM absorption.

Two-dimensional MXene materials show great potential for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding application because of their superior electrical conductivity. However, the susceptibility to oxidation and the mechanical brittleness of MXenes greatly limit their extensive application. Herein, an ultrathin flexible polyimide (PI)/Ti3C2TX composite film with a nacre-like lamellar structure is successfully prepared using a simple vacuum filtration and thermal imidization process. Owing to the addition of PI, the composite film exhibits excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 114.9 MPa and a fracture strain of 3.0%. Moreover, the nacre-like lamellar structure is conducive to multiple internal reflections, giving rise to the absorption of electromagnetic waves. The PI/Ti3C2TX composite film exhibits an outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness of 37 dB in the X-band range with an ultrathin thickness of only 15 μm. Furthermore, PI serves as an antioxidation coating, and its EMI shielding performance is maintained even when the composite film is exposed to various harsh environments. Therefore, the resulting composite film exhibits excellent EMI shielding stability and durability, which enables the potential application of high-performance EMI shielding materials against harsh environments.

Ti3C2Tx MXene is expected to achieve infrared stealth by regulating its thermal radiation properties. In this study, Ti3C2Tx MXene films were prepared by using the acid etching method, and the effects of etchants (HCl/LiF, HF, and NH4HF2) on the film structure as well as the infrared radiation properties were systematically studied. The intercalation process used to exfoliate single/few-layer nanosheets was found to accelerate the oxidation and increase the resistance of MXene. The mechanism behind these effects on emissivity was explained in detail. Based on these findings, the most suitable preparation process for low-emissivity MXene was selected. The resulting Ti3C2Tx film (HL-f), which used HCl/LiF as an etchant for Ti3AlC2, has a high conductivity of 3119 S/cm that reflects numerous infrared waves reaching its surface while exhibiting a low emissivity of only 0.13. The colloidal solution (HL-s) made with HCl/LiF as an etchant was sprayed directly onto a PI substrate as a coating with infrared stealth capabilities, thermal stability, and Joule heating properties, reducing the emissivity from 0.87 to 0.14. This work provides guidance for improving MXene preparation methods and their applications in related fields while demonstrating the great potential of HCl/LiF-etched Ti3C2Tx MXene as a low-emissivity infrared stealth material.

Progress in nanolubricant additive is crucial to pursuit of energy saving and sustainable development. For enhancing lubrication efficiency of pentaerythritol ester (PETE) oil, we synthesized zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) carbon dots(CD)@Ti3C2Tx-MXene hybrid composites using a facial hydrothermal method, which gave full play to interlayer shear mechanism of Ti3C2Tx-MXene, repair effect of carbon dots and their potential synergy. The composites were added to PETE as lubricating additives, during which ultrasonic treatment was employed to enhance the dispersion stability. The frictional tests confirmed that the addition of CD@Ti3C2Tx resulted in significant reductions in friction and wear across varying temperatures owing to the ultrasmall size, interlayer sliding, and synergistic effect. The optimal concentration of 0.1 wt % of CD@Ti3C2Tx reduced friction coefficients and wear volumes of PETE by 54.5% and 57.6% at 25 °C, 53.3% and 54.3% at 100 °C, and 40.0% and 45.9% at 200 °C, respectively. A tribofilm induced by complex tribochemical reactions, mainly consisting of carbon dots, Ti3C2Tx, metal oxides, carbides, and nitrides, was generated at the contact interface, which significantly alleviated direct contact between the rubbing pair. This study explores the potential of CD@Ti3C2Tx for development of advanced lubricating materials and is expected to contribute to wider adoption of MXene-based materials in the field of tribology.

Membrane separation has been widely used in the treatment of oily wastewater, but traditional membrane materials are easily polluted, and it is difficult to overcome the trade-off effects between water flux and retention rate. Recently, 2D MXene materials with adjustive microstructures and abundant surface functional groups have been used to fabricate functional composite membranes. In this work, the CNTs-TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x composite materials were suction filtrated on a support (nylon membrane) to construct the laminated composite membrane. The layer spacing was controlled by adjusting the mass ratio of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the crosslinking reaction of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used to modify the membranes synergistically. The CNTs-TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x (CTT) membrane had superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic characteristics as well as high efficiency in oil/water emulsion separation. CTT membranes exhibited a high separation effect ( > 99.9%) for various emulsified oils. Compared to the TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x (TT) membrane (211.62 L m −2 h −2 bar −1 ), the pure water flux of the composite membrane (CTT-1) displayed high permeation flux over 4432.13 L m −2 h −2 bar −1 . Moreover, the CTT membrane exhibits fouling resistance and stable water flux even after ten testing cycles. Therefore, CTT composite membranes with flexible layer spacing overcome the trade-off effects and have tremendous potential in practical applications.
