Efficient charge separation promoting visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of MnOx decorated WS2 hybrid nanosheets

Hua-Bin Fang,Nan Li,Zhibing Xue,Yikun Zhang,Yan-Zhen Zheng,Xia Tao

Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) has recently emerged as a narrow-band visible-light-driven photocatalyst; however, high recombination of photo-induced electrons and holes becomes a major concern to advance its photocatalytic performance. Here we for the first time adopt manganese oxide (MnO x ) as a hole-trapping material to decorate WS 2 nanosheets by photo-deposition in MnSO 4 solution. The MnO x decorated WS 2 (MnO x /WS 2 ) is found to exhibit more negative flat band potential, lower impedance and higher photocurrent response compared with pure WS 2 . These features beneficial to charge transfer and separation render the MnO x /WS 2 nanosheets highly active and visible-light-driven photocatalyst in RhB degradation. Further, the hole-trapping function of MnO x in promoting efficient charge separation of MnO x /WS 2 is experimentally demonstrated.

Improved lithium and sodium ion storage properties of WS2 anode with three-layer shell structure

Tingting Li,Ruisong Guo,Yani Luo,Fuyun Li,Leichao Meng,Xiaohong Sun,Zhiwei Yang,Honglin Luo,Yizao Wan

A three-layer shell structured tungsten disulfide-based material for high capacity anode is prepared by a hydrothermal method . The three layers consist of a stable porous carbon shell (PCS), a tungsten disulfide nanosheet (WS 2 ) and a highly conductive nitrogen-doped graphene (NG). While the nanostructured WS 2 and NG ensured the fast lithium/sodium ions (Li + /Na + ) insertion/extraction, the stable PCS shell provides structural stability during cycling, resulted in the improved rate capability and long cycle life of the PCS/WS 2 /NG anode material. For lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the capacity of PCS/WS 2 /NG anode is 324.7 mAh g −1 after 510 cycles at a high current density of 2 A g −1 . The discharge capacities of PCS/WS 2 /NG, PCS/WS 2 , WS 2 and PCS anodes are 272.9, 105.1, 8.1 and 6.7 mAh g −1 , respectively, at a high current density of 4 A g −1 . When the current density rebound to 0.1 A g −1 , their capacity retentions are 57.8%, 38.3%, 17.6% and 26.4%, respectively. The capacity retention of PCS/WS 2 /NG anode is 69.6%, higher than that of the pristine WS 2 anode. For sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), PCS/WS 2 /NG anode exhibits a specific capacity of 205.0 mAh g −1 after the 900th cycle at the current density of 0.5 A g −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance of the three-layer shell structured PCS/WS 2 /NG nanomaterial is a promising anode for high performance LIBs and SIBs.

Preparation of Few-Layered WS2 and Its Thermal Catalysis for Dihydroxylammonium-5,5-Bistetrazole-1,1-Diolate

Yiping Shang,Wu Yang,Yabei Xu,Siru Pan,Huayu Wang,Xiong Cao

In this study, few-layered tungsten disulfide (WS2) was prepared using a liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method, and its thermal catalytic effects on an important kind of energetic salts, dihydroxylammonium-5,5-bistetrazole-1,1-diolate (TKX-50), were investigated. Few-layered WS2 nanosheets were obtained successfully from LPE process. And the effects of the catalytic activity of the bulk and few-layered WS2 on the thermal decomposition behavior of TKX-50 were studied by using synchronous thermal analysis (STA). Moreover, the thermal analysis data was analyzed furtherly by using the thermokinetic software AKTS. The results showed the WS2 materials had an intrinsic thermal catalysis performance for TKX-50 thermal decomposition. With the few-layered WS2 added, the initial decomposition temperature and activation energy () of TKX-50 had been decreased more efficiently. A possible thermal catalysis decomposition mechanism was proposed based on WS2. Two dimensional-layered semiconductor WS2 materials under thermal excitation can promote the primary decomposition of TKX-50 by enhancing the H-transfer progress.

A multifunctional strategy of two-dimensional WS2 modified absorbers for efficient planar perovskite solar cells

Qinghua Sun,Wanting Hu,Miao Yu,Fengyou Wang,Xiaoyan Liu,Lihua Yang,Huilian Liu,Lin Fan,Lili Yang

The development of functional absorbers with excellent film-forming quality and carrier extraction/transfer efficiency is of great significance to achieve high-efficiency and stable n–i–p planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we propose a simple in situ growth technique to construct high-quality absorbers by introducing a commercial two-dimensional (2D) tungsten sulfide nanosheet (WS2 NS) modifier during the growth of a perovskite. The synergistic effects of WS2 on perovskite crystallization kinetics, charge extraction/transfer/recombination behaviors, and device photovoltaic outputs were systematically studied. Owing to the strong coordination effect between WS2 NSs and organic cations in a perovskite, WS2 can be used as a growth template in the crystallization process of the perovskite, thus effectively passivating grain boundaries and surface/interface trap states, and synchronously improving the film-forming quality, surface/interface contact, and photogenerated charge extraction/transfer efficiency of the perovskite. Moreover, WS2 located at the grain boundaries and surface/interface provides the “fast paths” for photogenerated electron–hole pairs by virtue of its high charge mobility, which greatly inhibits the accumulation/recombination of charge carriers and effectively improves the photovoltaic performance and hysteresis behavior of planar PSCs. Additionally, WS2 NSs induce the substitutional doping of formamidinium cations, which has a positive contribution to broadening the spectral response range. The results show that the efficiency of the WS2-modified PSC is significantly better than that of the conventional planar device. The non-encapsulated functionalized devices also exhibit good stability due to the multifunctional effects of a WS2-modified perovskite, resulting in great advantages for the development of highly efficient flexible-, semitransparent-, and tandem-photovoltaic applications.

W–N/C@Co9S8@WS2-hollow carbon nanocage as multifunctional electrocatalysts for DSSCS,ORR and OER

Xiaohui Liu,Xiaofeng Li,Manli An,Yanfang Gao,Zhenzhu Cao,Jinrong Liu

Due to the unique characteristics like large specific surface area of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) and its well-defined hollow Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), it is widely used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction(OER). Herein, we prepare N-doped C hollow metal organic frame structure materials , which are used as a template, WS 2 nanocrystals are grown and encapsulated in MOF with interfacial W–N coupling centers. During the pyrolysis, after carbonizing, ZIF-67 becomes Co, N-doped C materials, and the growth of WS 2 is effectively suppressed, creating multi-functional groups W–N/C@Co 9 S 8 @WS 2 materials. The synthesized material is employed as a counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells, its high power conversion efficiency (PCE) (7.38%) based DSSC under AM 1.5G irradiation was much more than that of Pt (7.06%). Such excellent electrocatalytic performance was resulted from the unique frame pore structure , the synergistic effect of WS 2 , Co 9 S 8 and W–N multi-functional groups. Besides, W–N/C-4@Co 9 S 8 @WS 2 shows E 1/2 ≈0.84 V and a little Tafel slope of 44 mVdec −1 when employed as electrocatalysts for ORR and potential ≈ 1.79 V to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which are lower than that of Pt/C ≈ 1.91 V catalysts in 0.1 M KOH.

A hierarchical MXene@WS2/MnO2 hybrid as a ternary heterostructure electrode for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Zhang Pu,Zhang Yijiao,Wang Xinhuan,Wang Yanming,Zhang Xiaoliang,Mu Jingbo,Zhang Xiliang,Wu Chunxia

With their distinctive merits of high power density and prolonged cycle life, supercapacitors have emerged as a compelling subject of research for advanced energy storage applications. To address the limitations of individual components in supercapacitor electrodes, such as MXene restacking and the poor conductivity of MnO 2 , a ternary MXene@WS 2 /MnO 2 heterostructure was rationally designed. This distinctive configuration suppresses layer restacking, thereby allowing a greater proportion of surface atoms to participate in electrochemical reactions and providing optimized pathways for the movement of ions and charge carriers. The fabricated MXene@WS 2 /MnO 2 electrode showed a high specific capacitance of 824.7 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 , and it held 87.6% of its capacitance after 5000 charge–discharge cycles. Beyond this, an asymmetric supercapacitor built with activated carbon as the electrode substrate attained an energy density of 30.6 Wh kg −1 at an applied power density of 440.7 W kg −1 . Equipped with the as-prepared cathode material, this device maintained 90.1% capacitance retention over 5000 cycles and capably drove an LED array. The present work verifies the significant prospects of a ternary heterostructure design strategy in the construction of high-performance energy storage systems.

Mo doping engineering induced sulfur vacancies of WS2 for electrochemical performance: Implications for hydrogen evolution reaction

Dong-Ni Yang,Yin Shi,Cheng-Bao Yao

Herein, we report a facile cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted strategy for continuous synthesis of ternary Mo x W 1-x S 2 composites with tunable Mo/W ratios. CTAB facilitates the exposure of active sites by suppressing clustering at the molecular scale and expanding the (002) interlayer spacing in WS 2 . Meanwhile, Mo-doping not only optimizes the structure but also introduces sulfur vacancies (V S ), which can effectively modulate the band structure and charge distribution. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of Mo x W 1-x S 2 has been flexibly controlled via defect and doping engineering. Mo-doping activates the basal plane of 2H-WS 2 and supplies more active sites, resulting in higher performance for HER. Electrochemical characterization confirms the significant contributions of Mo-doping to the expansion of electrochemical active surface area (C dl = 27 mFcm −2 ) and the reduction in charge transfer resistance (R ct = 11.8 Ω). The HER activity of 2H-WS 2 has been effectively activated at the Mo-doping content of 5%. Density functional theory was employed to investigate the charge distribution and electronic structure induced by V S of Mo x W 1-x S 2 , revealing that the enhanced catalytic activity of 2H-phase MoWS 2 stems from electron donation by V S . This study provides a new strategy for the structural design and efficient synthesis of 2H-phase catalysts.

Enhanced interfacial molecular interactions in WS2/ZnS heterojunctions enabling ppb-level NH3 detection at room temperature

Jianyu Ling,Siqi Ma,Xi Chen,Hongpeng Zhang,Yu Tong,Linhu Jin,Xiaoyu Ji,Kewei Zhang,Chunfeng He,Mingzhe Zhang

Designing a gas sensor equipped with the ability to detect ppb-level ammonia at room temperature remains a substantial challenge. The strategy of enhancing interfacial molecular interactions via interfacial charge transfer is highly feasible for the detection of low-concentration gases. In the research, a mixed-dimensional WS 2 /ZnS heterojunction was synthesized for ammonia detection. The results show that the sensor exhibits an ultra-sensitive ammonia response. The theoretical limit of detection (LOD) for the WS 2 /ZnS sensor is 7.3 ppb NH 3 . Additionally, the sensor delivers excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability. WS 2 /ZnS heterojunction facilitates the chemisorption and diffusion of ammonia. In-situ data and structure analysis reveal that interfacial charge transfer induces the polarization of W-S bonds, facilitating the adsorption of ammonia and the gas-sensing reaction between ammonia and oxygen anions, thereby accelerating the kinetics of the gas-sensing reaction. This work highlights the great potential for constructing a strong chemical bond polarization to improve the detection of low-concentration ammonia of WS 2 -based sensors.

Strain-Engineered Rh Single Atoms on Curved WS2 for Hydrogen Production and Coupled Photochemical Water Splitting

Ting Gao,Jie Gu,Changheng Yang,Rui Wang,Chan Wang,Pengfei Zhang,Jiatong Li,Xiaoyan Zheng,Yunmiao Fan,Puheng Yang,Xiufu Hua,Junfeng Hui,Huigang Zhang

Hydrogen is a promising clean energy carrier, yet the high energy demand of water electrolysis limits its widespread adoption. Catalysis is crucial to enhance the efficiency of hydrogen production and lower energy costs. However, conventional catalyst design guided by the d-band theory faces inconsistencies in predicting adsorption behavior, and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a major efficiency bottleneck. To address these challenges, we developed a strain-engineered Rh single-atom catalyst anchored on curved WS2 supported by carbon nanotubes (RhSA/WS2@CNT) to modulate the electronic structure. The resultant catalyst achieves an ultralow overpotential of 17.4 mV at 10 mA cm–2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a mass activity ∼65 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the H* adsorption trend contradicts d-band theory predictions but is explained by orbital symmetry adaptation, where the strain-modulated dxz orbital plays a major role in governing adsorption energetics. Beyond catalyst design, the HER catalyst was coupled with a photocatalytic iodide oxidation reaction (IOR) to replace the OER and reduce the water-splitting voltage to 0.7 V. This study not only introduces a strain-engineering strategy to optimize single-atom catalysts but also demonstrates a coupled electro-photo system that enhances energy efficiency, offering an alternative approach for sustainable hydrogen production.

Maleimide-Enhanced Conductivity of 2D MoS2 and WS2 via Rapid “Click” Reactions Toward High-Performance Supercapacitors

Yue Zhang,Mingzi Sun,Weikang Zheng,Bintong Yang,Ting Ying,Liang Mei,Ruixin Yan,Honglu Hu,Guozhao Fang,Dongliang Chao,Bolong Huang,Zhong-Shuai Wu,Zhiyuan Zeng

The rising need for efficient energy storage has sparked interest in high-performance supercapacitors. However, their low energy density is a significant drawback. 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) like molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) and tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) are promising for electrodes due to their adjustable surface chemistry and electronic properties. However, MoS 2 and WS 2 are still facing challenges, including phase instability, limited interlayer accessibility, and poor conductivity in ambient conditions. Here, a rapid and controllable strategy is presented for the covalent functionalization of MoS 2 and WS 2 nanosheets via a “click”-type Michael addition reaction with maleimide derivatives. This approach increases interlayer spacing by more than 1.5 times and enhances electrical conductivity by over threefold, thereby exceptionally improving charge transport and ion diffusion. The functionalized membranes deliver outstanding electrochemical performance, including a volumetric capacitance of up to 164 F cm −3 and capacitance retention exceeding 92% after 10 000 cycles, which are 30-fold increase when comparing with their pristine counterparts. This work offers a robust platform for engineering high-performance TMD-based electrodes and provides a viable route toward next-generation high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Reduced Turn-On Voltage and Boosted Mobility in Monolayer WS2 Transistors by Mild Ar+ Plasma Treatment

Junfeng Hou,Congming Ke,Jiajun Chen,Baofan Sun,Yuanzheng Xia,Xu Li,Ting Chen,Yaping Wu,Zhiming Wu,Junyong Kang

Monolayer two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides, such as tungsten disulfide (WS2), are regarded as promising candidates for optoelectronic and electronic applications. Although theoretical calculations have predicted outstanding electronic properties of WS2, the performance of WS2-based electronic devices is still limited by the relatively high Schottky barrier and low carrier mobility. In this work, low-energy argon (Ar+) plasma treatment was used as a nondestructive preconditioning technique to tailor the electrical properties of the WS2 monolayer grown by chemical vapor deposition. Photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy were used to monitor the modified optical properties of WS2 with increasing plasma treatment time. An improved electrical conductivity was observed after a short-time plasma treatment. The physical mechanism was further revealed by a comparative study between top-electrode and bottom-electrode devices and simulation based on the density functional theory. It is concluded that mild Ar+ plasma treatment can effectively lower the Schottky barrier height and the effective mass of carriers, which reduces the turn-on voltage and enhances the mobility, respectively. However, if the processing time is too long, the WS2 lattice structure will be destroyed. This work has provided an effective method for manipulating the Schottky barrier and mobility of monolayer WS2 transistors and paves the way for developing high-performance electronic devices based on 2D semiconductors.

Effect of layer number on recovery rate of WS2 nanosheets for ammonia detection at room temperature

Ziyu Qin,Dawen Zeng,Jia Zhang,Congyi Wu,Yanwei Wen,Bin Shan,Changsheng Xie

Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), as a representative layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), is expected as a promising candidate for high-performance NH 3 sensor at room temperature. Unfortunately, the common WS 2 based NH 3 sensors are difficult to recovery at room temperature, which severely limits its application. Hence, how to improve recovery has become an urgent problem to be solved. Herein, we prepare five types of WS 2 nanosheets with different layer numbers from bulk to monolayer, and find that the recovery time of NH 3 gas sensor is rapidly linear shorten as the number of layers decreasing. Through the first-principles calculation of the interaction between NH 3 and WS 2 substance, the different binding energy between ammonia and the surface (−0.179   eV) and interlayer (−0.356   eV) of layered WS 2 , as well as the different electron transfer way, should be responsible for the difficult recovery rate of various WS 2 samples. Therefore, reducing the number of layer of WS 2 is a promising approach to speed up recovery. Based on this conclusion, we successfully prepare a fast recoverable ammonia gas sensor based on single layer WS 2 , which exhibits exciting fast recovery within 271.9   s at room temperature without any condition. Moreover, our work also can act as a reference for other gas detection of TMDs based gas sensor to improve the gas performance at room-temperature.
