In this study, we designed a dual functional nanosensor for detecting Cr (Ⅲ) and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism between amine functionalized upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), where UCNPs serve as energy donor and aggregated AuNPs as energy acceptor. UCNPs have red emission at 654 nm under 980 nm laser excitation and monodispersed AuNPs show strong absorbance around 520 nm. Monodispersed AuNPs form aggregate easily in the presence of Cr (Ⅲ), which leads to the red-shift of the absorption of AuNPs and quenches the red emission of UCNPs. In the presence of STPP, the formation of Cr (Ⅲ)-STPP complex weakens the aggregation extent of AuNPs and the red emission of UCNPs increases. Therefore, the content of Cr (Ⅲ) and STPP could be detected in wide range according to the linear variety of fluorescence intensities of UCNPs at 654 nm with the detection limits of 0.44 μM and 0.54 μM for detecting Cr (Ⅲ) and STPP, respectively. In addition, due to the high selectivity and accuracy for the detection of STPP, this nanosensor can be utilized to determine STPP in green tea drink and drinking water.

Microbial pollution and antibiotic contamination can pose a serious threat to human health. The rational development of efficient and low-cost methods is critical to solving these problems. In this study, novel Z-scheme heterojunctions consisting of Yb-MnO 2 and nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were fabricated to achieve efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) and the destruction of bacteria ( Escherichia coli used as a model). Results showed that the Yb-doping strategy improves the characteristics of host MnO 2 by weakening the lattice interface and increasing its surface area. Compared with Yb-MnO 2 , Yb-MnO 2 /N-CQDs heterostructures exhibited superior photocatalytic activity in TC degradation under simulated solar light. The remarkable photocatalytic and mild oxidation abilities of Yb-MnO 2 /N-CQDs led to an impressive 97.88% removal rate of TC. Additionally, the structure displayed robust resistance to various ions and broad pH levels. Notably, the Yb-MnO 2 /N-CQDs heterostructures exhibited excellent bactericidal activity, with no observed bacterial resistance even after 20 consecutive trials. Furthermore, quenching experiments demonstrated that 1 O 2 and O 2 − were the primary radicals involved in the Yb-MnO 2 /N-CQDs-based photocatalysis process. The remarkable photocatalytic activity of Yb-MnO 2 /N-CQDs can be attributed to two key factors. Firstly, the large surface area and abundant oxygen defects provide rich active sites for reactant degradation. Secondly, the Z-scheme heterojunctions formed between Yb-MnO 2 and N-CQDs effectively facilitate the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and increase the reduction/oxidation potentials for reactive oxygen species generation. This study presents a promising novel photocatalyst for the facile and energy-saving treatment of antibiotic and microbial pollution, and it may provide new insight into the design of highly efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts.

The majority of the fabrication procedures of lanthanide-doped materials involve thermal treatment that often results in crystallite regrowth, stabilizing the specific crystal structure and resulting in luminescence enhancement. The efficiency and intensity of up-conversion luminescence are closely related to the structure and synthesis process of the materials. Herein, well-crystallized and pure tetragonal NaY(MoO4)2 microcrystals with a uniform octahedral shape have been successfully synthesized via an environmentally friendly hydrothermal method, followed by annealing treatment. The phases, structures, morphologies, and compositions of the synthesized products annealed at 500–1000 °C remain unchanged, indicating high thermal stability. Furthermore, the NaY(MoO4)2:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals exhibit strong green emission when irradiated using infrared (980 nm) or ultraviolet (378 nm) wavelengths. Upon 980 nm excitation, up to 37-fold luminescence enhancement is achieved when the samples are annealed at about 700 °C. Interestingly, the high colour purity of the strong green emission is not only independent of the dopant concentration and heat treatment temperature, but it is also independent of the excitation conditions, including power and wavelength, and this makes it particularly suitable as a green safety signal light and luminescent security ink in paintings. As-prepared safety inks with NaY(MoO4)2:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals were used for visual fingerprint recognition printed on A4 paper with three-level fingerprint security features, significantly increasing the difficulty of illegal imitation and enhancing the levels of anti-counterfeiting.

The low-usage of solar energy and the sluggish separation efficiency of the photogenerated electrons/holes pairs are the obstacles in the practical application of photocatalysts. The integration of upconversion and Z-scheme heterojunction is expected to break the barriers to achieve the efficient charge separation and broaden near-infrared light absorption . Herein, an effective indirect Z scheme AgInS 2 /In 2 S 3 heterostructure with carbon quantum dots (CQDs, as the electron conduction medium) and Lu 3 NbO 7 :Yb, Ho (as upconversion function) has been successfully synthesized. Consequently, the Lu 3 NbO 7 : Yb, Ho/CQDs/AgInS 2 /In 2 S 3 heterostructure exhibited superior photocatalytic activities for Cr(VI) reduction and H 2 O 2 production, reducing 99.9% of Cr(VI)(20 ppm, 15 min) and 78.5% of Cr(VI) (40 ppm, 30 min) with visible light irradiation as well as 94.0% of Cr(VI) (20 ppm, 39 min) under NIR light irradiation. Simultaneously, the heterostructure could generate 902.9 μM H 2 O 2 for 5 h under visible light irradiation. The intensive photocatalytic properties could primarily be attributed to the boosted light absorption capacity, the improved solar-to-energy conversion by the remarkable upconversion capacity of Lu 3 NbO 7 : Yb, Ho/CQDs and the faster charge transfer through a Z-schematic pathway. This work is anticipated to open a novel “window” for designing the efficient photocatalysts by coupling of Lu 3 NbO 7 : Yb, Ho and CQDs.

Upconversion core–shell nanoparticles have attracted a large amount of attention due to their multifunctionality and specific applications. In this work, based on a NaGdF4 sub-10 nm ultrasmall nanocore, a series of core–shell upconversion nanoparticles with uniform size doped with Yb3+, Er3+ and NaDyF4 shells with different thicknesses were synthesized by a facile sequential growth process. NaDyF4 coated upconversion luminescent nanoparticles showed an obvious fluorescence quenching under excitation at 980 nm as a result of energy resonance transfer between Yb3+, Er3+ and Dy3+. NaGdF4:Yb,Er@NaDyF4 core–shell nanoparticles with ultrathin layer shells exhibited a better T1-weighted MR contrast.

The W18O49 nanoflowers with a diameter of 500 nm are prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. The Er–Yb: NaYF4 nanoparticles are adsorbed on the petals (the position of the strongest local electric field on W18O49 nanoflowers). With a 976 nm laser diode (LD) as an excitation source, the selectively green upconversion luminescence (UCL) is observed to be enhanced by two orders of magnitude in Er–Yb: NaYF4/W18O49 nanoflowers heterostructures. It suggests that the near infrared (NIR)-excited localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of W18O49 is primarily responsible for the enhanced UCL, which could be partly reabsorbed by the W18O49, thus leading to the selective enhancement of green UCL for the Er–Yb: NaYF4. The fluorescence intensity ratio is investigated as a function of temperature based on the intense green UCL, which indicates that Er–Yb: NaYF4/W18O49 nanoflower heterostructures have good potential for developing into temperature sensors.

Rare earth-doped upconversion nanoparticles have promising potential in the field of pesticide detection because of their unique frequency upconverting capability and high detection sensitivity. This paper reports a novel aptamer-based nanosensor for acetamiprid detection using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NH 2 -NaYF 4 : Yb, [email protected] 2 (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). Herein, GNPs as acceptors efficiently quench the fluorescence of UCNPs and acetamiprid specifically interacts with acetamiprid binding aptamer (ABA), causing the conformation changes of ABA from random coil to hairpin structure. Accordingly, ABA no longer stabilizes the GNPs in salt solution, leading to the varying aggregation extent of GNPs. Thus, the fluorescence of UCNPs are proportionally recovered. Under the optimized conditions, the enhancement efficiency was observed to increase linearly with the concentration of acetamiprid from 50 nM to 1000 nM, resulting in a relatively low limit of 3.2 nM. Additionally, the aptasensor demonstrated high selectivity to similar structure pesticides such as imidacloprid and chlorpyrifos , and further confirmed its application capacity in adulterated tea samples.

A highly sensitive luminescent bioassay for the detection of Salmonella typhimurium was fabricated using Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as the donor and gold nanorods (Au NRs) as the acceptor and utilizing an energy transfer (LET) system. Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs with a strong emission peak at 807 nm were obtained by changing the doped ion ratio. Carboxyl-terminated Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs were coupled with S. typhimurium aptamers, which were employed to capture and concentrate S. typhimurium . The electrostatic interactions shorten the distance between the negatively charged donor and the positively charged acceptor, which results in luminescence quenching . The added S. typhimurium leads to the restoration of luminescence due to the formation of UCNPs-aptamers- S. typhimurium , which repels the UCNPs-aptamers from the Au NRs. The LET system does not occur because of the nonexistence of the luminescence emission band of Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs, which had large spectral overlap with the absorption band of Au NRs. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of detecting S. typhimurium was 12 to 5 × 10 5 cfu/mL (R = 0.99). The limit of detection for S. typhimurium was as low as 11 cfu/mL in an aqueous buffer. The measurement of S. typhimurium in milk samples was satisfied in accordance with the plate-counting method, suggesting that the proposed method was of practical value in the application of food security.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2; as a potential photosensitizer) has good photocurrent performance and chemical stability but often exhibits low utilization efficiency under ultraviolet (UV) region excitation. Herein, we devised a near-infrared light-to-UV light-mediated photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing platform for the sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) based on core–shell NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 upconversion microrods by coupling with target-triggered rolling circle amplification (RCA). The upconversion microrods synthesized through the hydrothermal reaction could act as a photosensing platform to convert the near-infrared (near-IR) excitation into UV emission for generation of photoinduced electrons. The target analyte was determined on a functional magnetic bead by using the corresponding aptamers with a sandwich-type assay format. Upon target CEA introduction, a complex was first formed between capture aptamer-1-conjugated magnetic bead (Apt1-MB) and aptamer-2-primer DNA (Apt2-pDNA). Thereafter, the carried primer DNA by the aptamer-2 paired with linear padlock DNA to trigger the RCA reaction. The guanine (G)-rich product by RCA reaction was cleaved by exonuclease I and exonuclease III (Exos I/III), thereby resulting in the formation of numerous individual guanine bases to enhance the photocurrent of core–shell NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 upconversion microrods under near-IR illumination (980 nm). Under optimal conditions, the near-IR light-mediated PEC aptasensing system could exhibit good photoelectrochemical response toward target CEA and allowed for the detection of target CEA as low as 3.6 pg mL–1. High reproducibility and good accuracy were achieved for analysis of human serum specimens. Importantly, the near-IR-activated PEC aptasensing scheme provides a promising platform for ultrasensitive detection of other biomolecules.

An upconversion luminescence method was developed for the determination of glutathione (GSH), L -cysteine (Cys) or L -ascorbic acid (AA) based on redox reaction . We synthesized poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-modified Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), and the luminescence of these UCNPs was effectively quenched due to their carboxyl groups coordinating with Fe 3+ to form a UCNPs/Fe 3+ system. GSH, Cys or AA reduced Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , which induced the luminescence recovery of the UCNPs. Under the optimized conditions, wide linear concentration ranges from 0.25-300 μM for GSH, 0.5–875 μM for Cys and 0.5–350 μM for AA were found, and the detection limits (3 S/K) were 0.2 μM, 0.5 μM and 0.2 μM, respectively. Thus, the UCNPs/Fe 3+ system was successfully applied for sensing GSH, Cys or AA.

In this work, we design a FRET system for sensitive and selective determination of thrombin in red region, in which NaYF 4 :Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) act as donor and gold nanorods (Au NRs) act as acceptor. NaYF 4 :Yb,Er UCNPs with a strong emission at 661 nm were successfully synthesized by tuning the doped ions ratio. Carboxyl-functionalized NaYF 4 :Yb,Er UCNPs and Au NRs were then prepared and conjugated with the thrombin aptamers, respectively. The fluorescence emission band of NaYF 4 :Yb,Er UCNPs ( λ max =661 nm) highly overlaps with the absorption band of Au NRs( λ max =666 nm), which benefits from the large tunability of the spectrum band of Au NRs. A FRET system was then formed when thrombin was added to the mixture of NaYF 4 :Yb,Er UCNPs and Au NRs, which were both modified thrombin aptamers. The fluorescence quenching efficiency of NaYF 4 :Yb,Er UCNPs was increased in a thrombin concentration-dependent manner, which built the principle of thrombin quantification. The linear range was 2.5–90 nM in an aqueous buffer, and 3.75–112.5 nM in spiked human serum samples for thrombin. It also demonstrates a high selectivity to other biological species due to the specific binding. The measurement of thrombin in human plasma is satisfying, suggesting that the FRET system is of practical value in a complex biological sample matrix in red region.

The targeted design of composition and properties for high-entropy rare-earth zirconates (HE-RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 ) using thermal properties tailoring theory represents a research hotspot in the field of thermal barrier coatings. This work designed and synthesized a class of HE-RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 via solid-state reaction by adjusting the mass disorder, size disorder, and electronegativity, including (La 0.2 Ho 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 Tb 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (#Tb), (La 0.2 Ho 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 Er 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (#Er), (La 0.2 Ho 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 Yb 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (#Yb), (La 0.2 Ho 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 Lu 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (#Lu). The phase composition and crystal structure were analyzed using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM, and the thermophysical and mechanical properties were evaluated. The results demonstrate that as the size disorder increases, HE-RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 gradually transforms from a single-phase structure to a dual-phase structure coexisting with pyrochlore and fluorite. In terms of thermophysical properties, all materials exhibit low thermal conductivity and good correlation with both size disorder and mass disorder. Among them, #Lu demonstrates the most outstanding thermal insulation performance, which is attributed to its strong Umklapp scattering and point defect scattering. Additionally, under the combined effects of electronegativity, lattice energy, and size disorder, #Lu exhibits the highest thermal expansion coefficient. Importantly, doping with different rare-earth elements increases the material’s configurational entropy and degree of lattice distortion, optimizing the high-temperature phase stability and chemical compatibility from the kinetic perspective. In terms of mechanical properties, #Lu exhibits the lowest Young’s modulus, highest hardness, and fracture toughness, which is attributed to its high internal size disorder and lattice distortion. This work employs thermal properties tailoring theory to customize the composition of high-entropy RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 . It is essential for developing RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 thermal barrier coatings with tunable thermophysical properties.
